Sexism In Tanzanian Secondary School English Language Textbooks: Investigation Of Adjective Attributions, Fides S. Pangani, Antoni Keya Antoni Keya
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This research paper investigates sexism in Tanzania’s secondary school English language textbooks with a focus on the adjectives used to describe women and men in textbooks published between 2005 and 2014. The paper aims to reveal how women and men are described, uncover gender ideologies conveyed by adjective descriptions and characterise the gender ideologies as hegemonic or deviant. Data were collected through a critical textual review of eight (8) textbooks. This paper is anchored on the Feminist CDA theory; and Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework was used as the analytic tool whereby data were described, interpreted and explained. Efficient Information Retrieval For Software Bug Localization, Saket Khatiwada
Efficient Information Retrieval For Software Bug Localization, Saket Khatiwada
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Software systems are often shipped with defects. When a bug is reported, developers use the information available in the associated report to locate source code fragments that need to be modified to fix the bug. However, as software systems evolve in size and complexity, bug localization can become a tedious and time-consuming process. Contemporary bug localization tools utilize Information Retrieval (IR) methods for automated support to minimize the manual effort. IR methods exploit the textual content of bug reports to capture and rank relevant buggy source files. However, for an IR-based bug localization tool to be useful, it must achieve …

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
America’s changing demographics and the increasing number of children with disabilities call for appropriate representations of race/ethnicity and disabilities in materials (e.g., books) for inclusive classrooms. This study analyzed how Asian/Asian-American (A/AA) people with disabilities had been portrayed in picture books with the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature (APAAL) or the Schneider Family Award (SFA). We addressed the intersectionality of Asian racial cultures and disabilities, focusing on the picture books with these awards, due to the potential impact of these portrayals on children. We used 35 picture books with the APAAL from 2001 to 2020 and 18 with the SFA …
Orientalism Restated In The Era Of Covid-19, Joey Kim
Orientalism Restated In The Era Of Covid-19, Joey Kim
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
This essay bridges a gap between an analysis of anti-Asian targeting and an analysis of Orientalism. Because histories of Orientalism and anti-Asian targeting pre-date the current moment, I demonstrate the centrality of Orientalism to the evolution of xenophobic language and sentiment in U.S.-foreign historical relations. I recount instances of anti-Asian, xenophobic, and “Yellow-Peril” rhetoric in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic. In doing so, I examine the racialization of COVID-19 as a trope of orientalism. This racialization, I argue, places the Asian-presenting body in a state of heightened visibility, precarity, and susceptibility to plunder. The newfound precarity of the …

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The purpose of this study is to answer the question: How can reflection via an autoethnographic approach promote sought-after outcomes of a semester studying abroad? Through an anthropological lens, I completed field work, kept field notes, and wrote a reflexive blog to navigate the social processes of learning to belong in another place within the context of a multicultural environment of study abroad program with Erasmus students. Through autoethnography as a methodology and a text, I utilized linguistic analysis to identify key themes that represent my transformative experience. The personal, emotional, and intellectual growth I experienced was made transformative by …

Hindu Nationalism And Indian Christian Response!, Dhinakaran Savariyar
Hindu Nationalism And Indian Christian Response!, Dhinakaran Savariyar
The Journal of Social Encounters
Indian democracy is fast recast as Hindu nationalism which neither honors the country’s constitutional secularity nor upholds its tradition of diversity (religious, cultural, and linguistic), inclusivity, and pluralism. The forged uniformity avowedly seeks to construct the “one” India - one religion (Hindu), one culture (Hindu), and one language (Hindi). Falsely representing a Hinduism under attack from ‘invader’ religions, nationalist ideologues arouse the base emotions of the unsuspecting majoritarian community and stoke their fears against the minorities, particularly Christians. Conscientious challenging of such imposed homogeneity is met with charges of sedition and profiling as anti-national foreign stooge. At this critical juncture, …

This article analyzes particularly this problem. In conducting this research, comparative, contrastive, and content analyses were utilized. To test different scholars’ opposite views, nine English proverbs were randomly selected and translated into Uzbek. Descriptive analysis revealed that one out of nine …

Modern sports and their terminologies in European and other languages have been strongly influenced by English. In spite of our country being under the influence of the former Soviet Union for a long period, we can still see a lot of foreign sports terminology together with Russian terminologies in Uzbek language. Most sports terminologies are Russian because they come through Russian. The reason is that some of the most popular sports originating in European countries have been exported to other countries together with established terminology. There are several possibilities of how to transfer terminology into recipient languages: to borrow and …

In the works translated from Russian into Uzbek, on the other hand, translators often resort to visual aids. Because these field tools perform a variety of methodological and pragmatic tasks in a literary text, the translator uses them effectively. In the first case, the translator can perceive a semantic image of a verb or adjective in Russian and translate it in the translation by means of a word belonging to an independent category derived from a figurative word. This not only increases the informativeness, emotionality, or expressiveness of the text, but also does not violate the requirement of a volume …

Doing research on proper names has not been completed in the sphere of cognitive linguistics. From the point of view of cognitive science, the creation of a new name is not so much the use of predetermined mental representations, but an active process of establishing various connections between mental spaces in which various aspects of information are integrated. In this case, the linguistic unit does not just excite a certain stereotypical cognitive structure in our minds, but launches a creative process in which the person himself chooses the ways and means of constructing a situation or an object. With this …

Translation Studies And Public Policy, Gabriel Gonzalez Nunez
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
Chapter 9 discusses relationships between translation and public policy. When challenges of organizing public spaces involve the use of more than one language, translation is often employed, and, in such circumstances, translation may serve a variety of functions, including the deployment of language policies alongside other policy aims such as the promotion of human rights or multiculturalism. The chapter explores this link between public policy and translation, presenting a survey of insights that have been provided by scholars, and suggesting areas where scholarship can provide further understandings. These insights are important, given the continuing multilingualism and diversity of societies.

Structural Analysis Of Code-Switching In Tanzanian Swahili-English Online Telecom Adverts, Emmanuel Ilonga Dr
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This study analyses structural configurations of code-switching from Swahili-English online business-related advertisements in Tanzania. The study uses advertisements disseminated by telecom corporations on Facebook. Through the matrix language frame (MLF), and the 4–M models of code-switching, the study discloses the dominance of Swahili as the matrix language (ML), supplying a relatively higher quantity of content morphemes (CM) in clauses; whilst English becomes the embedded language (EL). The Swahili’s supremacy in larger mixed language structures reflects the higher application of Swahili in day-to-day interactions in Tanzania, while English ‘chips in’ at times. In bundle names, which are phrases in structure, the …
