Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

This portfolio contains two projects. The first is an analysis of The Truman Show, which is an American comedy film from 1998. The paper discusses the film’s themes of control, discipline and hyperreality using the perspectives of postmodern theorists Jean Baudrillard and Michel Foucault. The second paper is a teaching-based project that demonstrates how composition instructors can use multimodal texts to teach academic argumentation. The selected projects reflect the variety of research-based knowledge, critical thinking skills, and writing skills that I acquired in the Master of Arts in English program.

The Paratexts Of Audience Engagement: Cover Matter That Draws In And Keeps Readers, Athena L. Edwards Jul 2022

The Paratexts Of Audience Engagement: Cover Matter That Draws In And Keeps Readers, Athena L. Edwards

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Within the book publishing industry, purchase statistics often determine a book’s success. This metric neglects crucial factors of reader engagement (i.e., reception and anticipation of current and future work) such as level of interest and appreciation. By blending key concepts from work on assemblage, ecology, reader-response, audience invoked, and media studies, this thesis attempts to (re)invigorate the discourse of book paratexts’ role in inspiring reader engagement. As a manifestation of various voices performing and contextualizing a core text for readers, paratexts are a key component to the discursive uptake of books by readers and their publics. Book covers, specifically, are …

Convergent Anthropocene Systems – A System Of Systems Approach, John Little, Amro Farid Jul 2022

Convergent Anthropocene Systems – A System Of Systems Approach, John Little, Amro Farid

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The greatest societal challenges of the Anthropocene are numerous and daunting, collectively spanning almost every discipline of science and engineering. Societies confronted with these challenges need to manage synergies and trade-offs across multiple systems, scales and levels of analysis. Unfortunately, most researchers tend to begin with their own subsystem and incrementally add a few interactions to a few other subsystems. Such incremental approaches ignore the dynamics of the larger systems and entirely overlook the fact that the societal challenges are interdependent. This fragmented approach is paralleled in policy circles. To overcome these challenges, we are inspired by system-of-systems approaches to …

Evaluation Of An Initiative To Increase Rates Of Exclusive Breastfeeding Among Rural Hispanic Immigrant Women, Naomi E. Pitcock Jul 2022

Evaluation Of An Initiative To Increase Rates Of Exclusive Breastfeeding Among Rural Hispanic Immigrant Women, Naomi E. Pitcock

Dissertations

This project was a retrospective evaluation of the prenatal education component of a multi-component breastfeeding promotion intervention. The educational portion of this program, provided in Spanish using intercultural communication techniques, was designed to increase the number of Hispanic women who choose to initiate breastfeeding, using breast milk exclusively to nourish their newborns. The Hispanic women included in this program were all registered with a local prenatal-care coordination program for low-income women, had routine hospital births (both vaginal and C-section) and elected to participate in the prenatal education class. Data regarding intention to breastfeed and breastfeeding during hospitalization were gathered through …

Untold Perspectives: The Impact Of The Closure Of A Health Institution In A Black Community In North St. Louis County, Patricia Zahn, Kiley Bednar, Andrea Jackson-Jennings, Erica L. Henderson

Dissertations

Based on the literature of social determinants of health, health equity, and anchor institutions, it is evident that hospitals have a role to play in ensuring the health of their community. However, our understanding of the impact of hospital closures is limited, especially when it comes to Black communities. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of the closure of the Normandy Osteopathic Hospital to the social determinants of health—specifically access to care and economic stability as it relates to income and wealth generation—for a Black community in one near-North suburb of St. Louis. Ten individuals with …

Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics

Institutionalized zakāh has long been a decisive tool that provides various types of support to addressing a variety of well-being problems of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka, a country where such a community is a minority. Being significantly successful to empowering the underprivileged of the community, the zakāh has also faced challenges that negatively impacted its effective functioning. This study aimed to investigate institutionalized zakāh‟s multiple support, identifying its challenges and suggesting some recommendations to make its‟ role more effective. This is an exploratory study used qualitative data collected through interviews with five zakāh institutions in the Eastern part …

Trends And Contributions In Islamic Economics Research: A Decade Bibliometric Analysis Of Four Journals In Scopus Database, Lawan Bello, Mohamed Aslam Haneef

Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics

Research strengthens a discipline, and it has an enormous impact, locally and globally. Moreover, it provides solutions to human problems for the wellbeing of all. The rapid growth of scientific research in Islamic economics and the increase in the poverty rate among Muslim communities necessitated the urgent need to assess the trends in its knowledge construction and make future research in line with its aims to address current problems. On this reflection, bibliometric research was conducted on four influential Islamic economics journals in the Scopus database from 2010 to 2019. The study identified the productivity of the discipline and examined …

A Spatiotemporal Map Of Reading Aloud, Oscar Woolnough, Cristian Donos, Aidan Curtis, Patrick S Rollo, Zachary J Roccaforte, Stanislas Dehaene, Simon Fischer-Baum, Nitin Tandon Jul 2022

A Spatiotemporal Map Of Reading Aloud, Oscar Woolnough, Cristian Donos, Aidan Curtis, Patrick S Rollo, Zachary J Roccaforte, Stanislas Dehaene, Simon Fischer-Baum, Nitin Tandon

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Reading words aloud is a fundamental aspect of literacy. The rapid rate at which multiple distributed neural substrates are engaged in this process can only be probed via techniques with high spatiotemporal resolution. We probed this with direct intracranial recordings covering most of the left hemisphere in 46 humans (26 male, 20 female) as they read aloud regular, exception and pseudo-words. We used this to create a spatiotemporal map of word processing and to derive how broadband γ activity varies with multiple word attributes critical to reading speed: lexicality, word frequency, and orthographic neighborhood. We found that lexicality is encoded …

Wikimarks: Harvesting Relevance Benchmarks From Wikipedia, Laura Dietz, Shubham Chatterjee, Connor Lennox, Sumanta Kashyapi, Pooja Oza, Ben Gamari

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We provide a resource for automatically harvesting relevance benchmarks from Wikipedia - which we refer to as "Wikimarks"to differentiate them from manually created benchmarks. Unlike simulated benchmarks, they are based on manual annotations of Wikipedia authors. Studies on the TREC Complex Answer Retrieval track demonstrated that leaderboards under Wikimarks and manually annotated benchmarks are very similar. Because of their availability, Wikimarks can fill an important need for Information Retrieval research. We provide a meta-resource to harvest Wikimarks for several information retrieval tasks across different languages: paragraph retrieval, entity ranking, query-specific clustering, outline prediction, and relevant entity linking and many more. …

Bert-Er: Query-Specific Bert Entity Representations For Entity Ranking, Shubham Chatterjee, Laura Dietz Jul 2022

Bert-Er: Query-Specific Bert Entity Representations For Entity Ranking, Shubham Chatterjee, Laura Dietz

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Entity-oriented search systems often learn vector representations of entities via the introductory paragraph from the Wikipedia page of the entity. As such representations are the same for every query, our hypothesis is that the representations are not ideal for IR tasks. In this work, we present BERT Entity Representations (BERT-ER) which are query-specific vector representations of entities obtained from text that describes how an entity is relevant for a query. Using BERT-ER in a downstream entity ranking system, we achieve a performance improvement of 13-42% (Mean Average Precision) over a system that uses the BERT embedding of the introductory paragraph …

Close Writing Practices In The Post-Secondary Classroom, Scott Jarvie, Michael Lockett Jul 2022

Close Writing Practices In The Post-Secondary Classroom, Scott Jarvie, Michael Lockett

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This paper explores a suite of close writing practices and exercises that ask students to attend closely to language at the level of morpheme, word, line, sentence, or stanza. Close writing aims to move students beyond a conception of reading as mere transaction and technology, while pushing writing pedagogy beyond the development of expository prose, as is common in post-secondary contexts. Instead, the pedagogies presented in this inquiry frame writing as an analytic practice which aids both students’ capacities as writers and, importantly, their development as critical readers. Such pedagogies, we believe, reflect a less-didactic approach to teaching reading, writing, …

Tapping Into The Potential Of Student Engagement With Universal Design For Learning In Pedagogical Courses, Lin Lin, Krystal A. Barber

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

This paper outlines instructional strategies and course projects that demonstrate multiple means of engagement, representation, action, and expression, the essential principles of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The authors first share specific practices and examples related to each of the essential principles of UDL. Next, three projects are presented to demonstrate how these principles, along with technological tools, can be infused into pedagogical courses to prepare preservice elementary teachers in inclusive, online learning environments. This paper explores how teaching strategies and online tools were chosen with purpose, to promote positive learning outcomes and to prepare preservice teachers for the …

Guns, Classrooms, And Politics: Eliciting And Reflecting Upon Education Student Beliefs In The Age Of School Shootings, James K. Rigney, Gage Jeter

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Unearthing the perspectives students bring with them in their college-level education coursework is especially important as education instructors are tasked with interrupting the unexamined proliferation of dominant ideologies among future educational professionals. The introduction to education course serves as an important site for this interrogation. One trend largely unexplored in the scholarly literature is the pedagogical use of controversy in introduction to education coursework. This study analyzes student discussion of the controversy of school gun violence within a redesigned introduction to education course. Data for this study come from student postings and final reflection papers in an online section of …

Eli-Tpitahatomek Tpaskuwakonol Waponahkik (How We, Native People, Reflect On The Law In The Dawnland), Michael-Corey F. Hinton, Erick J. Giles

Maine Law Review

Multiple nations within the Wabanaki Confederacy, including the Maliseet Nation, Mi’kmaq Nation, Passamaquoddy Tribe, and Penobscot Nation, were signatories to the July 19, 1776 Treaty of Watertown, which was the first ever treaty entered into by the United States of America following the Declaration of Independence. Following the Treaty of Watertown, Wabanaki warriors served directly under General George Washington and made critical contributions in support of the Americans’ Revolutionary War. Such contributions were made based on the Americans’ promise that the Wabanaki Nations’ lands, natural resources, and traditional ways of life would be forever protected by the fledgling United States. …

Digital Realness: Queer Intimacy In Contrapoints, William S. Beaman Jul 2022

Digital Realness: Queer Intimacy In Contrapoints, William S. Beaman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Digital media comprises a diverse ecology of creative genres, institutions, communities, platforms, and entrepreneurial businesses. Yet despite its practical association with variegated social forms, digital mediation as such is often theorized as a logic of homogenization, problematically obscuring its heterogeneously contested character. This article reconceives mediation as an irreducibly multi-scalar and heterogeneous infrastructure, recasting online activity as contested participation in wider social contexts. I am contributing to a counter tendency in media studies that methodologically treats digital forms as polysemic, ambiguous and contested, rather than necessarily homogenizing, in the context of specific cases. Drawing out the theoretical implications of this methodology …

Target Personification Influences The Positive Emotional Link Between Generating And Implementing Malevolently Creative Ideas, Tin L. Nguyen, Kayla N. Walters, Alexis L. D'Amato, Scarlett R. Miller, Samuel T. Hunter Jul 2022

Target Personification Influences The Positive Emotional Link Between Generating And Implementing Malevolently Creative Ideas, Tin L. Nguyen, Kayla N. Walters, Alexis L. D'Amato, Scarlett R. Miller, Samuel T. Hunter

Reports, Projects, and Research

Research on malevolent creativity has rarely linked the generation of harmful ideas with their implementation (i.e., malevolent innovation). To explain why people might act upon their malevolently creative ideas, we drew on affective events theory. Specifically, given evidence that aggressive and creative thought events can elicit positive emotions, we argued that generating new and harmful ideas can evoke positive emotional states that make malevolent innovation a more desirable course of action. We first tested our mediational pathway in two studies with different malevolent creativity tasks. Finding only partial support for our predictions in Study 1 (N = 126), but …

Textual Emotion Detection Approaches: A Survey, Mahinda Mahmoud Samy Zidan, Ibrahim Elhenawy, Ahmed R. Abas, Mahmoud Othman

Future Computing and Informatics Journal

Over the past decades, social media attracted individuals to express their feelings on any topic or item, resulting in an incremental growth in the size of created data. These feelings and unstructured data paved the path for business organizations to gather information and build statistical analysis. Various machine learning and natural language processing-based approaches are used for sentiment and emotion analysis. Moreover, deep learning-based approaches recently gained popularity due to their remarkable performance in text analysis. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the prominent machine learning models applied in emotion analysis. It explores various emotion analysis taxonomies, in addition …

Arab Health Promoters’ Perspectives On Religious/Cultural Challenges To Adopt Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours Among Arab Immigrants In Canada, Hussein Baharoon, Judy King Jul 2022

Arab Health Promoters’ Perspectives On Religious/Cultural Challenges To Adopt Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours Among Arab Immigrants In Canada, Hussein Baharoon, Judy King

The Qualitative Report

Despite the importance of faith and cultural background in Arab immigrants’ lives, little is known about their role in preventing cardiovascular diseases. To understand the challenges among Arab immigrants related to acculturation and religiosity in adopting healthy lifestyle behaviours and managing stress, we conducted three face-to-face focus groups with 17 Arab health promoters who were members of the Canadian Arab Health Coalition. Averaging 80 minutes in length, the focus groups were conducted in Ottawa, Canada, in February and March 2018. Data were analyzed with an inductive thematic analysis approach; we identified four themes: “Culture first!”: dominant influence of home country …

Exposing The Mythology Of Balance And The Ecology Of Graduate Student Mother Resilience In Covid-19, Carolyn A. Oldham Ph.D., Kelly D. Bradley Ph.D. Jul 2022

Exposing The Mythology Of Balance And The Ecology Of Graduate Student Mother Resilience In Covid-19, Carolyn A. Oldham Ph.D., Kelly D. Bradley Ph.D.

The Qualitative Report

While the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the once marginalized conversation of academia’s gendered imbalance of opportunity, discussion of its impact on graduate student mothers has remained absent. Resilience has been cited as key to overcoming in the pandemic era with little discussion of how its conceptualization continues to marginalize females in the academy. Our phenomenological study explores graduate student mothers’ conceptualizations of balance, failure, success, and resilience using a family resilience framework which acknowledges the multiple identities to which they may avow and contexts in which they may operate. Employing an ecological conceptual framework, we engaged nine graduate student mothers …
