'Space Is The Place:' Afrofuturism In Black Popular Music, Tamyka Jordon-Conlin Jul 2022

'Space Is The Place:' Afrofuturism In Black Popular Music, Tamyka Jordon-Conlin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on developing a theory of Afrofuturist music. Afrofuturism is an umbrella term used to describe Black cultural productions that reflect on the African diasporic culture of the past while imagining potential futures, often while appropriating imagery of technology and science-fiction tropes. With the intent of redefining notions of blackness, Afrofuturist artists create alternative historical narratives and speculative future projections. These productions create space that allows the Afrofuturist to discorporately negotiate the limits of Black subjectivity. Poet, activist, and avant-garde musician Sun Ra is credited as the progenitor of Afrofuturism, and his model has since been adapted by …

Brexit As An Arbitrary Withdrawal Of European Union Citizenship, William Thomas Worster Jul 2022

Brexit As An Arbitrary Withdrawal Of European Union Citizenship, William Thomas Worster

Florida Journal of International Law

This Article, however, will challenge the assumption that UK nationals have lost EU citizenship following Brexit because it amounts to an arbitrary withdrawal of citizenship, prohibited by international law. In turn, this Article argues that British nationals should continue to enjoy the rights and status of EU citizens beyond the registration deadlines at the end of 2021. The current public debate, and the Withdrawal Agreement itself, assumes that loss of EU citizenship is the automatic result of Brexit. Currently much of the discussion relies heavily on a narrative informed by the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (VCLT) and …

Beyond Contrastive Rhetoric: Helping International Lawyers Use Cohesive Devices In U.S. Legal Writing, Elizabeth R. Baldwin Jul 2022

Beyond Contrastive Rhetoric: Helping International Lawyers Use Cohesive Devices In U.S. Legal Writing, Elizabeth R. Baldwin

Florida Journal of International Law

This Article attempts to use linguistics, specifically text analysis and pragmatics, to help explain how and why NNS lawyers struggle with cohesion in their U.S. legal writing. Then in light of that discussion, it offers a four-step, receptive and productive exercise to engage students in contrastive analysis of cohesive features across languages and cultures. It begins by distinguishing coherence (top-down flow related to rhetorical preferences and organization of content and argument) from cohesion (bottom-up flow related to the surface features that exhibit connections between clauses). As background, it explores the role of cohesion in English as understood by linguists in …

Turning The Other Cheek: The Persecution Of The Christian Minority, Audra L. Savage

"The Greatest Dissemblers In The World": Timucuas, Spaniards, And The Fall Of Fort Caroline, Christophe J.M. Boucher

Florida Historical Quarterly

At dawn, September 20, 1565, four hundred Spanish soldiers under the command of the Adelantado (military governor) Pedro Menendez de Aviles launched a surprise attack on Fort Caroline, a French outpost located in the lower reaches of what is today the St. Johns River in northern Florida. The assault could not have come at a worse time for the fort's residents. Ten days earlier, most of the fighting men in the settlement had sailed south to St. Augustine with Jean Ribault to launch a preemptive strike against Menendez, who had just landed in the area. What could have been a …

Teaching Priorities As Both Durable And Flexible: Writing Pedagogy Classes Across International Contexts, Charlotte L. Land, Jessica Cira Rubin

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

This article developed from a year-long inquiry into our practices as writing teacher educators. As new university faculty in two different countries, we drew on a previous literature review project to identify enduring priorities for teaching writing pedagogy. We then analyzed our developing practices in these unfamiliar places, specifically noting what also felt flexible enough to work across contexts, leaving space for local adaptation. For each of our classes, we explore how we expressed those priorities: discussing teaching practices as connected with theories and discourses of teaching writing, supporting teacher-student experiences through a cycle of writing, and facilitating appreciative views …

The Evolution From Mentor Texts To Critical Mentor Text Sets, Margaret O. Opatz, Elizabeth T. Nelson Jul 2022

The Evolution From Mentor Texts To Critical Mentor Text Sets, Margaret O. Opatz, Elizabeth T. Nelson

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

This article chronicles how two teacher educators changed the mentor text set assignment--one component of a larger writing unit plan--from a simple list of texts to a critical mentor text set that includes intentionally selected, culturally and linguistically diverse texts. The goal of the critical mentor text set was to support preservice teachers’ understanding of how to implement culturally sustaining writing pedagogy through developing students’ identities, skills, and intellect as writers, and students’ abilities to read texts through a critical stance that evaluates the privilege and power within the texts while working towards anti-oppression.

Teaching Writing As A Metacognitive Process, Heather Fox

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

In a writing methods course for future K-12 educators, preservice teachers examine the intersections of their experiences as writers, students, and future teachers through three interdependent projects. Completed between Fall 2019 and Spring 2022, this empirical study (n=138) includes Elementary Education, Middle Education, and (Secondary) English Teaching majors and focuses on the first project, Writing Memory, to examine how teaching writing as a metacognitive process facilitates preservice teachers’ understanding of how they and their future students developed, and are continuing to develop, as writers. The project analyzes students’ reflections on how they select and arrange previously written text to …

High School Persisters And Alternative Schools, Hyuny Clark-Shim Jul 2022

High School Persisters And Alternative Schools, Hyuny Clark-Shim

Dissertations and Theses

In response to a "dropout crisis," over the past decade much effort was made to retain high school students. Recent years' trends indicated an overall increased level of graduation rates; however, there has been a largely overlooked student population, persisters, who did not earn a high school diploma by the expected graduation date but remain engaged and continue to work towards graduation into their fifth or even sixth year of high school.

Using exploratory CART analysis, this study examined what individual-level and school-level factors were most effective in distinguishing students who were persisters versus on-time graduates. Given that persisters …

Metaphor For A Post-White Horizon, Dwayne K. Wright, Tyler Derreth Jul 2022

Metaphor For A Post-White Horizon, Dwayne K. Wright, Tyler Derreth

Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"

This project is a counternarrative, in the tradition of Richard Delgado’s The Rodrigo Chronicles, using critical race theory’s storytelling methodology. We present a discussion between a Black scholar and white scholar sharing their experiences as they explore the relationship between Blackness/whiteness and anti-Blackness/white supremacy. The crux of this counternarrative lies in the intersection between the hopelessness one Black scholar feels toward racial progress in America and the desperation of a white scholar as they process the possibilities for a post-white ontological future within the Western academy in the wake of the January 6th Insurrection. The counter-story integrates Afropessimistic thought with …

“Give Me The Rules, I’Ll Understand Grammar Better ”: Exploring The Effectiveness Of Usage-Based Grammar Approach Through Explicit Instruction Of Adverbials, Pouya Vakili

Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of this dissertation is to examine the (in)effectiveness of the Usage-based grammar approach through explicit instruction of adverbials in the US educational context. One area that can complicate the question of native speakers’ grammar knowledge is their awareness of grammatical terms and their functions. Along with exploring psychological and linguistic domains of language learning and instructional theories and methodologies, and also investigating grammar teaching in US schools, this dissertation intends to examine native speakers’ knowledge of grammar focusing on adverbs and adverbials as its pedagogical concern. Using a limited pool of students to examine the effectiveness of …

Understanding Children's Museums' Approaches To Diversity: A Critical And Socio-Cultural Investigation, Amber Nicole Smith Jul 2022

Understanding Children's Museums' Approaches To Diversity: A Critical And Socio-Cultural Investigation, Amber Nicole Smith

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Children begin to develop self-awareness and awareness of others at an early age (Marion, 2011). Before they reach kindergarten, children begin to make distinctions about race by noticing similarities and differences between themselves and others (Winkler, 2009). Exposing young children to diversity can help each child embrace their identity, accept and celebrate differences, and be accepting of themselves and others (Cole & Verwayne, 2018).

The purpose of this study is to explore how children’s museums support diversity through their programs and planning. The research of this study focuses on four children’s museums located in the United States. There are many …
