Intra-Operative Language Assessment For Adult Brain Tumor Survivors: A Systematic Review, Carissa Jolley
Intra-Operative Language Assessment For Adult Brain Tumor Survivors: A Systematic Review, Carissa Jolley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Awake craniotomy and language assessment procedures for brain tumor survivors can drastically affect patient outcomes and quality of life. The goal of intra-operative language mapping is to help preserve vital communicative functions. However, there is currently no standardized set of measures for intra-operative language assessment. This systematic review identified behavioral language measures used during intra-operative procedures and the resulting outcomes for adult brain tumor patients, with the aim of helping clinicians and researchers select intra-operative language assessments supported by the highest levels of evidence.
PRISMA guidelines were used to systematically identify articles. Patient demographic and medical information, neuroimaging data, intra-operative …
Perceptions Of Job Satisfaction Of Elementary School Special Education Teachers Working With Students With Emotional Disabilities In Board Of Cooperative Educational Services Centers In New York State, Rosanna Grund
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to answer two research questions: “What are the perceptions of job satisfaction for elementary school special education teachers working with students with emotional disabilities in Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) centers in New York State?” and “How do elementary school special education teachers working with students with emotional disabilities in BOCES centers in New York State perceive their school principals impacting their job satisfaction?” The overall qualitative research design included semistructured interviews of eight elementary school special education teachers in BOCES centers in New York State who worked with students who …
Perspectives From Teachers On Communication And Building Relationships With English Language Learner Families, Shannon Turley
Perspectives From Teachers On Communication And Building Relationships With English Language Learner Families, Shannon Turley
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this study was to identify the ways English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) educators overcome communication barriers that typically create a disconnect with English language learner (ELL) families. The study also sought to understand how ESOL educators build relationships with the families of their students. The theoretical framework of the intercultural communication competence (ICC) theory was used as a lens to explore this phenomenon.
The study used descriptive phenomenology and semi-structured interviews to collect data. Purposeful sampling was used to select six certified ESOL educators from urban counties in Central New York State. Thematic coding was …

Teachers’ Use Of Email For Communication With Students’ Families, Matthew Ferry
Leadership Education Capstones
The educational system holds an important role and responsibility in the attempt to educate all the youth in the country. A critical dynamic in the success of educating America is connected to the teacher’s ability to use online communication to build strong teacher-parent relationships. The purpose of this research study was to explore the levels of training that teachers have experienced in teacher education programs and professional development opportunities and the impacts it had on online communication to parents for their students. The study utilized surveys to poll teachers on the training they experienced during their career and the frequency …
To The Glory Of God Evaluating Origen’S Exposition Of The Scripture In His Leviticus Homilies, Andrew Johnson
To The Glory Of God Evaluating Origen’S Exposition Of The Scripture In His Leviticus Homilies, Andrew Johnson
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Johnson, Andrew M. “To the Glory of God: Evaluating Origen’s Exposition of the Scripture in His Leviticus Homilies”. Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2022. 237 pp.
Origen has been called “Adamantine,” an impossibly hard metal. Many have found his work to be strong and powerful and equal in its density. Origen’s preaching is almost impenetrable to the Evangelical preacher. This dissertation seeks to offer an entry for modern evangelical preachers to engage with the historic practice of figural exposition in Origen’s Leviticus homilies. The dissertation investigates the interpretative, homiletical and rhetorical histories which intersect in Origen’s homilies. It unpacks Origen’s use …

A Small Wolf Eats A Large Apple: An Experimental Investigation Of The Temporal Processing Of Conceptual Magnitudes, Carolina Alvarez
A Small Wolf Eats A Large Apple: An Experimental Investigation Of The Temporal Processing Of Conceptual Magnitudes, Carolina Alvarez
Theses and Dissertations
When individuals are presented with two options and are asked to select the conceptually larger item, a size congruity effect is usually observed. A size congruity effect is present in comparison tasks when congruent stimuli, whose physical size and conceptual size match, are compared much faster than incongruent stimuli, whose physical size and conceptual size do not match. The current study used images and words as stimuli to investigate the two competing hypotheses for the size congruity effect using delta plots. Positive delta plots were observed when response time for incongruent items was compared to congruent items, providing evidence of …
Mashiah: Messianism In Jewish Apocalyptic Literature Of The Second Temple Period, Fred R. De Leon
Mashiah: Messianism In Jewish Apocalyptic Literature Of The Second Temple Period, Fred R. De Leon
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This Thesis challenges notions that have dominated biblical scholarship for more than a hundred years. Up until the end of the twentieth century scholars uniformly believed that the concept of a suffering Messiah was not part of early first century CE Judaism. It was believed to a be a Christian creation. There is however startling evidence of messianic precursors to Jesus, including one who is introduced as the 'Prince of the Congregation' in recently published fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls. This is not surprising since the authors of the Tanakh lay the groundwork for an evolving and malleable concept …
Transcending The Transactional Function Of English As A Lingua Franca Expressing Subjectivities In English As A Lingua Franca Spoken Discourse, George Romero
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In 2008, David Crystal estimated that there were approximately two billion English speakers in the world (p. 5). For Crystal, an English speaker was anyone with “any systemic awareness, whether in speaking, listening, reading or writing [of English]” (p. 4). The conspicuous absence in Crystal’s definition of any reference to English native speaker competency points to the independence of the global spread of English from an Anglophone center. In our contemporary society, Crystal’s two billion English speakers are not using English to communicate with native English speakers. Instead, as the literature illustrates, the foremost trajectory of the global spread of …
An Intersectional Study Of Perceived Academic Climate And The Imposter Phenomenon In Psychology Students, Kelsey Braun
An Intersectional Study Of Perceived Academic Climate And The Imposter Phenomenon In Psychology Students, Kelsey Braun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Social exclusion in higher education can occur at multiple levels (e.g., systemic, institutional, interpersonal, individual), and individuals simultaneously hold multiple social identities that could influence their perceptions of academic climate. The current study utilized a mixed-methods convergent parallel design to explore the impact of multiple social identities, perceptions of academic climate, and the imposter phenomenon among psychology students. In the quantitative portion, participants (N = 142) completed an online survey related to gender centrality, academic climate, and imposter phenomenon. Gender group comparisons revealed that cisgender men indicated poorer perceptions of climate than cisgender women and gender minorities, but imposter …
Applying The Dialogic Method In An Eighth Grade English Curriculum, Maggie Repko
Applying The Dialogic Method In An Eighth Grade English Curriculum, Maggie Repko
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In this thesis, I provide an analysis of Paulo Freire’s (1973) dialogic method for language education. I then synthesize his theories with the work of sociocultural and linguistic researchers who have determined the strongest activities to bring about student language development. Finally, I apply these theories to my appendices of created works that might be utilized in an eighth-grade creative writing course. This thesis demonstrates the similarities between Freire’s students and our students in the USA today and the ways that a critical dialogic pedagogy will meet their language learning needs while also inspiring their creative, critical conscientização. Paulo Freire …
Language Ideologies In First Year Composition Textbooks, Joanna Clevenger
Language Ideologies In First Year Composition Textbooks, Joanna Clevenger
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis examines how standard language ideologies are perpetuated in the five most frequently assigned first year composition textbooks from four higher education institutions in Southern California’s Inland Empire. Standard language ideologies position one variation of a language as superior, correct, appropriate and the normal variation of a language which everyone should be able to speak. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, the five textbooks were analyzed in order to uncover the embedded power and hegemony over women, people of color, and those from a lower socioeconomic status which are prevalent throughout society because they are unchallenged and widely accepted as the …

Chronic Poetics: A Waiting Room Of One's Own, Madeleine Simmons
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This article explores chronic poetics, through my personal lens I take readers on a walk- through of poetry and the discussions surrounding chronic illnesses. I examine the current state of chronic illness and the nuances to its discussion. I analyze chronic illness in the context of disability studies, and touch on the tensions of categorizing chronic illness as a disability. As well as how to best navigate reading chronic poetics, as poets engage in new territories as they form a new language to describe their circumstances. While analyzing multiple poems from different authors, I explore why specifically the vessel of …
Weaving Ethnic Identity: Discovering The Threads Of Multilingual Diversity In The Fabric Of Group Identity Among Karen Communities Of Denver, Colorado, Charity J. Seidler
Weaving Ethnic Identity: Discovering The Threads Of Multilingual Diversity In The Fabric Of Group Identity Among Karen Communities Of Denver, Colorado, Charity J. Seidler
Theses and Dissertations
How do Karen immigrants use language within Colorado communities? My thesis answers this question through narrative case studies of six S’gaw Karen women. Many Karen refugees, who flee the decades-long conflict within their homeland in Myanmar (Burma), find themselves navigating life first in Thailand, and eventually in the United States as foreign-language speakers. These refugees encounter numerous linguistic and cultural barriers in their new U.S. homeland, where it is difficult to function in many domains if they do not have the opportunity to learn much English upon arrival.
The six case studies are based on recorded sociolinguistic qualitative open interviews. …
Building Lexical Networks: Preschoolers Extract Different Types Of Information In Cross-Situational Learning, C-H Chen, C Yu
Building Lexical Networks: Preschoolers Extract Different Types Of Information In Cross-Situational Learning, C-H Chen, C Yu
School of Psychology
Children's everyday learning environment is semantically structured. For example, semantically related things (e.g., fork and spoon) usually co-occur in the same contexts. The current study examines the effects of semantically structured contexts on preschool-age children's (N = 65, 33 girls, age range: 52-68 months) use of statistical information to learn novel word-object mappings. Children were assigned into one of two conditions, in which objects from the same semantic category repeatedly co-occurred in the same trials (Same-category condition) or objects from different categories repeatedly co-occurred in the same trials (Different-categories condition). Children's word learning performance in the two conditions were comparable. …
Inventing Network Composition: Mobilizing Rhetorical Invention And Social Media For Digital Pedagogy, Jacob Richter
Inventing Network Composition: Mobilizing Rhetorical Invention And Social Media For Digital Pedagogy, Jacob Richter
All Dissertations
Inventing Network Composition: Mobilizing Rhetorical Invention and Social Media for Digital Pedagogy investigates how students learn through writing and invention in digital social networks. Pursuing a primary research question of How do student composers invent within networked social media environments?, the dissertation examines how social media and digital writing tools can help students to learn, connect, and share generatively. The core theoretical contribution that this dissertation offers is a theory of network composition, which is a mode of invention that composers engage in social media environments that is intensely social, that is structured by a digital interface, that …
Network Of Folx: Applying The Use Of Community Cultural Wealth To The Experiences Of Black First-Generation Hbcu Students, Maurice Williams Jr
Network Of Folx: Applying The Use Of Community Cultural Wealth To The Experiences Of Black First-Generation Hbcu Students, Maurice Williams Jr
All Dissertations
Despite improvements in the rates of college admission over the past few decades, college persistence and graduation rates continue to be problematic, particularly for marginalized students—students of color and students from low-income and/or first-generation families at all institutional types. When attention is shifted to Black first-generation students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), persistence research neglects to include how Black first-generation college students own their educational experience to gain access to college and persist through graduation nor does the research examine cultural factors that help these students persist through the college-going process. Building from both student persistence and community …
A Qualitative Exploration Of The Role Older Siblings Play In The College-Going Experiences Of Younger First-Generation College Students, Gretchen Waugaman
A Qualitative Exploration Of The Role Older Siblings Play In The College-Going Experiences Of Younger First-Generation College Students, Gretchen Waugaman
All Dissertations
This study looked at the roles that older siblings who have been through the college process themselves play in the college-going experiences of younger first-generation college students. A qualitative study was conducted with 10 FGC students at a large public four-year university in the Southeast of the United States of America who had older siblings who were either currently attending college or had recently graduated from a four-year college or university themselves. For this study, I answered the following research question:
What role do older FGC student siblings play in the college-going experiences of younger siblings?
Data was collected using …
Examining Language Ideologies And Trilingual Practices In Family, Community, And School Contexts: Three Case Studies, Mihaela Gazioglu
Examining Language Ideologies And Trilingual Practices In Family, Community, And School Contexts: Three Case Studies, Mihaela Gazioglu
All Dissertations
Despite increasing knowledge on trilingualism, we still have a lot to learn about the intricacies of becoming trilingual and what people do with different languages that they use or are exposed to (Chevalier et al., 2012; Choi, 2019; Cruz-Ferreira, 2006). This three-study dissertation employed qualitative research methods to address three aspects that current research offers little information. Each study focused, respectively, on 1) a child’s and her parents’ daily language practices to construct meaning in three languages, 2) how mothers' language ideologies influence their language practices and the support they offer to their trilingual children, and 3) teachers’ language ideologies …
Assertion, Stakes And Expected Blameworthiness: An Insensitive Invariantist Solution To The Bank Cases, Brandon Yip
Assertion, Stakes And Expected Blameworthiness: An Insensitive Invariantist Solution To The Bank Cases, Brandon Yip
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Contextualists and Subject Sensitive Invariantists often cite the knowledge norm of assertion as part of their argument. They claim that the knowledge norms in conjunction with our intuitions about when a subject is properly asserting in low or high stakes contexts provides strong evidence that what counts as knowledge depends on practical factors. In this paper, I present new data to suggest they are mistaken in the way they think about cases involving high and low stakes and I show how insensitive invariantists can explain the data. I exploit recent work done on the distinction between flouting a norm and …
Conclusion: Comparing Women's Representation In Asian Parliaments, Devin K. Joshi
Conclusion: Comparing Women's Representation In Asian Parliaments, Devin K. Joshi
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This chapter explains important findings from this study while identifying common trends across Asia and the sub-regions of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. It examines to what degree Asian parliamentarians have prioritized substantive representation of women (SRW). It assesses whether SRW was a primary reason or motivation behind why members of parliament (MPs) entered politics in the first place and whether they viewed SRW as a pressing issue for their governments to address. MPs interviewed in this study expressed what they felt were the most important issues today that need government’s attention. MPs were asked whether they make …

This narrative study’s purpose was to examine the ways English language learners with disabilities navigate the system of higher education and overcome challenges along the path toward college graduation. The participants in this qualitative interview study included six undergraduate students attending a 4-year college in central Texas. The narrative design involved participants sharing their lived stories and experiences in semistructured interviews. The data analysis revealed the following four …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Teachers’ Personal Epistemologies And Their Self-Efficacy About Culturally Responsive Classroom Management, Tahani Ahmed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diversity is now an essential matter in US public schools. For the first time in America's history, students of color will constitute a majority of the public school enrollment; on the other hand, most early childhood and elementary teachers remain monolingual, white, middle-class females (Hussar & Bailey, 2019). The demographic mismatch between students and teachers presents a critical concern for teacher preparation programs (Banks et al., 2005; Gay, 2018; Muñiz, 2019). Therefore, this study proposed that understanding the relationship between pre-service teachers' epistemological beliefs and their culturally responsive classroom management self-efficacy illustrated factors that may improve their teaching concept toward …
Modern American Propaganda: An Institutional History, Douglas Morrow
Modern American Propaganda: An Institutional History, Douglas Morrow
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Public Affairs and Public Diplomacy is the primary government institution in charge of overt, foreign-directed propaganda. This paper argues that the institutional culture of this institution was born and came to fruition in the period 1941-1953, and has not significantly changed since. That institutional culture includes a fierce adherence to a “strategy of truth,” with aesthetic norms being reserved and largely unemotional as a result of positioning themselves in moral and aesthetic opposition to Nazi and early Cold War Communist propaganda. Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s decision to staff these nascent institutions with artists, poets, …
Consciousness To Teach Bilingual Education In The Borderlands: Pláticas With Latina Teacher Candidates, Helena Muciño Guerra
Consciousness To Teach Bilingual Education In The Borderlands: Pláticas With Latina Teacher Candidates, Helena Muciño Guerra
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Despite the 3.9 million Latinx emergent bilinguals (EB) across U.S. classrooms (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2019), most bilingual teachers are White monolinguals (Cochran-Smith et al., 2016). Literature on teacher preparation in bilingual education (BE) has shown that due to the shared identities and origin and similar schooling experiences with their Latinx students, Latinx bilingual teacher candidates have a personal commitment to improving their studentsâ?? educational opportunities (Cervantes-Soon, 2018). Yet, most research on teacher preparation in bilingual education has been conducted in predominantly White-monolingual contexts, using Eurocentric research methodologies and methods, disregarding how the past educational experiences of Latinx inform …
Ready Player?: Sex And Race In Video Games, Matthew Michael Espino
Ready Player?: Sex And Race In Video Games, Matthew Michael Espino
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As a child, I had always been fascinated with video games. Sure, I used video games as a way to relieve stress mainly, but I found myself drawn into the worlds that I was immersing myself in. These worlds are filled with social structures, cultures, governments, even religions. Once I started doing research in college, I took a bit of a step back from the games I loved and took a broader look at what I was playing. Specifically, I wanted to see what these worlds had to offer in terms of representation of races, gender, and non-human characters. These …
Experiences Of Latinidad And First-Generation College Students In Jane The Virgin: Using Auto-Historia Teoria And Finding Coyolxauhqui, Gema Sarahi Lopez
Experiences Of Latinidad And First-Generation College Students In Jane The Virgin: Using Auto-Historia Teoria And Finding Coyolxauhqui, Gema Sarahi Lopez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is an examination of the importance of Latinx and first-generation college student representation in media. By using autohistoria-teoría and content analysis, I aim to find the ways in which the show, Jane the Virgin, influences my experiences of Latinidad as well as how it represents the first-generation college experience and how those relate to my own. I use Gloria Anzaldúa's model to study identity dealing with nepantla, arrebatamientos, and the Coyolxauhqui process to discuss my own identity.
Developing Cultural Competence Among Sixth-Grade Students Through Indigenous Knowledge And Place-Based Education, Tyus Roanhorse
Developing Cultural Competence Among Sixth-Grade Students Through Indigenous Knowledge And Place-Based Education, Tyus Roanhorse
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There is a need to develop cultural competence in educational settings. While there is a focus on training K-12 educators to be culturally competent, there is little focus on developing and examining the impact of student cultural competence training. Integrating Indigenous knowledge in an education setting is a unique way to start developing cultural competency by recognizing cross-cultural worldviews and perspectives. This can be done while using place-based education, which links the classroom to the cultural environment that has significant meaning to Indigenous peoples while enriching the learning experience for all students. The current study examines and measures the development …
A Climate Of Confessionalization: Famine And Difference In The Late Ottoman Empire, Matthew Ghazarian
A Climate Of Confessionalization: Famine And Difference In The Late Ottoman Empire, Matthew Ghazarian
Environmental Science and Policy: Faculty Publications
After the 1877–78 Russo-Ottoman War, the Ottoman Empire saw the rise of ethnic and sectarian clashes in Anatolia, the Balkans, and elsewhere, and the task of explaining that rise remains unfinished. Many have examined the intellectual formations of ethnic and sectarian solidarities after 1878, but the availability of new ideas cannot alone account for their widespread uptake. Why after 1878 did ordinary people respond more to calls upon ethnic and sectarian solidarity? Drawing on sources surrounding the 1879 famine in the Ottoman East, this article steps away from imperial metropoles to examine overlapping environmental, financial, and technological disjunctures. Adopting the …
Police Militarization And Overuse Of Force: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Paramilitary Units And Society, Ronald R. Burnett
Police Militarization And Overuse Of Force: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Paramilitary Units And Society, Ronald R. Burnett
Dissertations (2016-Present)
The role of the police is to maintain social order and safety through the enforcement of law. They investigate, prevent, and detect criminal activity. However, the problem with police protection today is overuse of force which often comes through the term militarism regarding agency tenets and dogma. Also, social media has focused on police overuse of force, exacerbating race riots and retaliatory police killings. Because of this, police reform has become a significant concern, not only in the United States but also abroad. The methodological approach for this dissertation is a quantitative analysis, data used is secondary, statistical procedure is …
