Verticality Metaphors In Classical Hebrew Revisited: Refining The Analysis Using Primary Metaphor Theory, Andrew Scott Hodge Aug 2022

Verticality Metaphors In Classical Hebrew Revisited: Refining The Analysis Using Primary Metaphor Theory, Andrew Scott Hodge

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis applies a new theory to old data. It reanalyzes VERTICALITY metaphors for distress in Classical Hebrew using Primary Metaphor Theory. Previously, this pattern of metaphors in Hebrew was analyzed by King (2012) within the general framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory. This study focuses on the ways that Primary Metaphor Theory radically changes the organization of conceptual structure as dictated by Conceptual Metaphor Theory and as used by King in his analysis of Hebrew VERTICALITY metaphors. The reorganization of conceptual structure following Primary Metaphor Theory hinges on the assumption that conceptual structures with direct, independent experiential motivations also have …

A Phonological Analysis Of Asu, James Passetti Aug 2022

A Phonological Analysis Of Asu, James Passetti

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides an analysis of the phonology of Asu, a small and endangered Nupoid language of Nigeria. The corpus of data used for the analysis comes from more than two hours of recordings of a word list for the language, provided to me by the historian and anthropologist Constanze Weise.

The Asu language recognizes only two syllable structures, CV and CGV. The only syllables without onsets are formed by four noun class prefixes [è-,ē-, à-,ā-], that create Asu nouns without onsets word-initially.

The phonemic inventory of consonants consists of seven pairs of corresponding voiced-voiceless obstruents at the labial, alveolar, …

The Emergence Of Core (Hash)Tags And Its Effects On Performance, Larry Zhiming Xu, Matthew Sargent, Yu Xu, Jingyi Sun, Yiqi Li, Janet Fulk Aug 2022

The Emergence Of Core (Hash)Tags And Its Effects On Performance, Larry Zhiming Xu, Matthew Sargent, Yu Xu, Jingyi Sun, Yiqi Li, Janet Fulk

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

The informational and social impacts of tags on forming networked publics have drawn extensive scholarly attention. However, existing literature lacks systematic and longitudinal accounts of how trending tags garner community interest and facilitate the promotion of user-generated content. This study addresses this issue by explicating the structures and functions of social tagging, showing how users employed certain tags to improve performance. To provide empirical evidence, we tracked and analyzed social tagging activities in an online community from its early stage for seven years. Over this time frame, very few tags emerged as core tags--the consensus choices that both occurred and …

Guidelines For Model Adaptation: A Study Of The Transferability Of A General Seagrass Ecosystem Dynamic Bayesian Networks Model, Paula Sobenko Hatum, Kathryn Mcmahon, Kerrie Mengersen, Paul Pao Yen Wu Aug 2022

Guidelines For Model Adaptation: A Study Of The Transferability Of A General Seagrass Ecosystem Dynamic Bayesian Networks Model, Paula Sobenko Hatum, Kathryn Mcmahon, Kerrie Mengersen, Paul Pao Yen Wu

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In general, it is not feasible to collect enough empirical data to capture the entire range of processes that define a complex system, either intrinsically or when viewing the system from a different geographical or temporal perspective. In this context, an alternative approach is to consider model transferability, which is the act of translating a model built for one environment to another less well-known situation. Model transferability and adaptability may be extremely beneficial—approaches that aid in the reuse and adaption of models, particularly for sites with limited data, would benefit from widespread model uptake. Besides the reduced effort required to …

English Language: The Subtle Force Behind The Demise Ofmozambican Higher Education Academic’S Aspirations, Ricardo Pinto Mario Covele, Patricio V. Langa, Patrick Swanzy

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

It is contended that Lusophone universities are to a certain degree deprived access to American and European scholarships in the 21st century. We examine the validity of this statement, focusing on the barriers scholars often face when accessing scholarships using English. To explore the constraints English language imposes on Mozambican lecturers pursuing international scholarships, the study employed qualitative research methods using structured interviews. The sample of interviewees included university lecturers from Eduardo Mondlane University. The discussions of the study were guided by two dominant themes: language coloniality and academic oppression (Lack of accessibility). Participants had their unique experiences while attempting …

Pre-Service International Teaching Assistant’S (Ita’S) Investments In Their Ita Training Course: A Multiple Case Study, Roger Anderson Aug 2022

Pre-Service International Teaching Assistant’S (Ita’S) Investments In Their Ita Training Course: A Multiple Case Study, Roger Anderson

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

Research has focused almost exclusively on International Teaching Assistants’(ITA) experiences as instructors, overlooking the ITA training class. This has led to the marginalization of Pre-Service ITAs in the literature. The locus of potentially important learning, a descriptive, multiple case study examined the investment (Darvin & Norton, 2015) of three Pre-Service ITA’s in their ITA training class over one semester at a large US university. Data included ITA’s weekly journals, individual interviews/ stimulated recalls, class assignments, and field notes from classroom observations. Findings are presented as portraits of real, multifaceted ITA’s, then from cross-case analyses. Participants experienced the same course very …

Archiving As The Foundation Of Fansubbing: A Case Study On Fan-Made Translation Of Virtual Youtubers In China, Jincai Jiang Aug 2022

Archiving As The Foundation Of Fansubbing: A Case Study On Fan-Made Translation Of Virtual Youtubers In China, Jincai Jiang

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Although fansubbing has been increasingly recognised as a rich research spot for several disciplines like translation and media studies, the significance of fan archiving during fansubbing remains relatively less discussed despite its vitalness in 1) obtaining and managing both source and finalised products; 2) enabling fansubbing to evolve into systematic and efficient massive online practices. Based on the literature review of fansubbing’s historical development and the author’s observational fieldwork within an active Chinese fansubbing group, the paper explains why archiving can be the premise of fansubbing and demonstrates its latest application on Bilibili, arguably the most influential user-generated content sharing …

Agenesis Of The Corpus Callosum: Developmental Trajectories Through Childhood, Kristin Eddy Aug 2022

Agenesis Of The Corpus Callosum: Developmental Trajectories Through Childhood, Kristin Eddy

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital brain malformation that affects the area of the brain responsible for interhemispheric transfer of information (Paul, 2011). Individuals with AgCC tend to have specific deficits resulting from reduced interhemispheric transfer for sensory-motor information, cognitive processing speed, and deficits in complex reasoning and novel problem-solving (Brown & Paul, 2019; Mangum, 2018; Miller et al., 2018). There are indications that those with AgCC also struggle with communication skills during early stages of life (Badderudin et al., 2007) and social interactions during adolescence (Paul et al., 2007). The purpose of this study is to …

A Script And Acting Analysis Of David Mamet’S Glengarry Glen Ross, Abdelrahman Metwally Aug 2022

A Script And Acting Analysis Of David Mamet’S Glengarry Glen Ross, Abdelrahman Metwally

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Glengarry Glen Ross is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Mamet. This paper is a practical guide for the actor to understanding the events of the play and, specifically, to approaching the role of Richard Roma, with a particular emphasis on Michael Chekhov’s psycho-physical work. First, I will discuss the circumstances, values and themes of the world of the play in relation to the character Shelley Levene as the main agent of the events. Then my focus in character analysis will shift to Richard Roma as the lead character of the ensemble. Together, the two characters create a contrasting duo …

Performance Cultures And Black Atlantic Literature, 1750-1833, Chinaza Amaeze Okoli Aug 2022

Performance Cultures And Black Atlantic Literature, 1750-1833, Chinaza Amaeze Okoli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation approaches performance cultures as integral components of early black Atlantic writing, and considers how meaning is produced at the intersection of writing and vernacular performance. It asserts that black writers, in their portrayal of performance practices, encode avenues and strategies for accessing other black voices in their communities. Pairing writing by black authors and a selection of comparable vernacular practices, my dissertation examines how these forms signify upon each other, offering new contexts for interpreting the black experience in the long eighteenth century. In exploring this thesis, my work approaches Olaudah Equiano’s narrative as illustrative of the ways …

Regression Analysis Of Resilience And Covid-19 In Idaho Counties, Ishrat Zaman Aug 2022

Regression Analysis Of Resilience And Covid-19 In Idaho Counties, Ishrat Zaman

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Global pandemic Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has serious harmful effects on our day-to-day lives. To overcome challenges such as this, critical preparedness, readiness, and response actions are required. This thesis uses estimates of community resilience available through the CRE Tool, published by the US Census Bureau, and COVID19 cases published by John Hopkins Coronavirus Research Center for Idaho counties. Simple linear regression analysis was performed to identify a correlation between COVID-19 cases and deaths in Idaho counties and measures of their resilience. Understanding this correlation could lead to better estimation and prediction of the effect of disasters in Idaho’s counties. …

The Value Of Promoting Social And Emotional Learning In Elementary School Students, Valerie Marie Hatcher Aug 2022

The Value Of Promoting Social And Emotional Learning In Elementary School Students, Valerie Marie Hatcher

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This dissertation will explore how to effectively promote social and emotional learning (SEL) in the elementary school classroom using art as a tool to enhance instruction in other subjects. As noted by art educator Viktor Lowenfeld and others, art helps children become aware of their surroundings and visualize things outside of their everyday experiences. Using art to demonstrate academic concepts also helps engage students in learning and promotes social and emotional growth, but many teachers lack instruction on how to effectively accomplish this goal (Brouillette, 2010; Farrington & Shewfelt, 2020; McCoy, 2016). The need to promote SEL has become even …

Towards Making Transformer-Based Language Models Learn How Children Learn, Yousra Mahdy Aug 2022

Towards Making Transformer-Based Language Models Learn How Children Learn, Yousra Mahdy

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Transformer-based Language Models (LMs), learn contextual meanings for words using a huge amount of unlabeled text data. These models show outstanding performance on various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. However, what the LMs learn is far from what the meaning is for humans, partly due to the fact that humans can differentiate between concrete and abstract words, but language models make no distinction. Concrete words are words that have a physical representation in the world such as “chair”, while abstract words are ideas such as “democracy”. The process of learning word meanings starts from early childhood when children acquire their …

Fishing Camps And Topiary Trees: Place, Affect, And Moral Agency In A Papua New Guinea Modernity, David Lipset Aug 2022

Fishing Camps And Topiary Trees: Place, Affect, And Moral Agency In A Papua New Guinea Modernity, David Lipset

Pacific Studies

Despite being regarded as a founding father in sociology and as no less canonical in anthropology (Merton 1934; Horowitz 1982), the overall theoretical framework of Durkheim’s arguments with respect to place, affect, and agency in The Division of Labor in Society (1933) and The Elementary Forms of Religious Life (1995) are too often ignored or unwittingly reinvented (Stewart 2007; Berlant 2008). I therefore want to begin this essay with a brief outline of how I understand his main points in order to lay a theoretical groundwork for my analysis of the shifting relationship of place, affect, and agency among the …

The Role Of Speech-Language Pathologists In Trauma-Informed Practices: Feelings, Attitudes, And Reported Behaviors Of Colorado School Speech-Language Pathologists, Kallie Haritopoulos Aug 2022

The Role Of Speech-Language Pathologists In Trauma-Informed Practices: Feelings, Attitudes, And Reported Behaviors Of Colorado School Speech-Language Pathologists, Kallie Haritopoulos

Master's Theses

Research indicates that a majority of children in the United States will be exposed to at least one traumatic event before they turn 18, and some children experience multiple forms. Trauma can cause various adverse effects in physical, cognitive, linguistic, behavioral, social, and emotional functioning, which can affect educational performance and success. Despite the increased chance that children who have experience trauma will receive speech and language services, research surrounding trauma-informed practices predominantly focus on the role of general education teachers and mental health professionals. This qualitative study aimed to understand the feelings, attitudes, and reported behaviors of five Colorado …

Alt-Right Of The_Donald And Authoritarian Communists On Reddit: Internet Memes To Build Community, Joshua Hendricks Aug 2022

Alt-Right Of The_Donald And Authoritarian Communists On Reddit: Internet Memes To Build Community, Joshua Hendricks

Master's Theses

This project infuses Lacanian psychoanalysis further into the rhetorical study by exploring authoritarian discourses on Reddit. I analyze the alt-right community that found a home on the subreddit r/The_Donald and chart their discourse as it shaped from the quarantine to the establishment of an independent forum called TheDonald.win. I selected memes and the comments around them to build the analysis. The second aspect of this thesis examines authoritarian communist discourse on Reddit. The leftist community splintered when r/socialism banned a community member because the person made catgirl art. The ban sent shockwaves through the leftist community on Reddit and generated …

No History Or Society To Be Found: Object-Oriented Ontology And Social Ontology, Bennett B. Gilbert Aug 2022

No History Or Society To Be Found: Object-Oriented Ontology And Social Ontology, Bennett B. Gilbert

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is widely theorized that the advent of the “Anthropocene Age” (under this or any other name) is bringing one form of human temporality to an end while it initiates another (Simon 2021). Because human activity threatens the duration and well-being of the planetary biosphere, the new age that this activity is bringing on—though it is proving to be extremely difficult to define—does present specific onto-epistemological and moral challenges behind its political and social problems. The most prominent and perhaps the core of these challenges is the demand to shed anthropocentrism in human culture, a change that would deeply alter …

Science Education Research On Student To Student Discourse: A Literature Review With An Applied Linguistics Lens, Abbee A. Mortensen Aug 2022

Science Education Research On Student To Student Discourse: A Literature Review With An Applied Linguistics Lens, Abbee A. Mortensen

University Honors Theses

Science education researchers have increasingly been using discourse analysis to research small group discussion while doing course related activities. This literature review examined studies from that discourse community to see what analysis methods were used and if they connected to applied linguistics theories or methods. Two of the most common discourse analysis frameworks used were Toulmin's Argument Pattern and grounded coding schemes that looked at the design and specific contents of the discourse. Studies covered will also include education scholars using theories of conversation analysis and normative pragmatics to make a more explicit connection to applied linguistics. Orienting and drawing …

Reproducing Oppression: A Discourse Analysis Of Ofp Funding For Ivf Through The Lens Of Reproductive Justice, Kirandeep Randhawa Aug 2022

Reproducing Oppression: A Discourse Analysis Of Ofp Funding For Ivf Through The Lens Of Reproductive Justice, Kirandeep Randhawa

Social Justice and Community Engagement Major Research Papers

Canada has long been viewed as a beacon of progressive universal healthcare. However, a closer look into reproductive healthcare services at the provincial level reveals some services are not as accessible as they are portrayed to be. The existing literature demonstrates the ways in which the bodily autonomy of marginalized groups has been restricted through reproductive oppression, as well as how the discourses surrounding infertility have influenced health policy. Using Reproductive Justice (RJ) theory, this research contributes to this literature by examining what discourses are employed in relation to the Ontario Fertility Program (OFP) funding model for IVF in the …

Going Viral: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Anti-Vaccine Movement & Social Media, Corinn Evancho Schumacher Aug 2022

Going Viral: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Anti-Vaccine Movement & Social Media, Corinn Evancho Schumacher

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

In the recent years of the rise of Web 2.0, health information has become more accessible. With this shift has come a reliance on social media to inform and educate the masses on vaccines. With the introduction of the Covid-19 vaccine, the conversation surrounding vaccines moved to the forefront of the United States’ zeitgeist from late 2021 to early 2022. In this research, I conducted a case study on the communication surrounding vaccines on social media while examining specific Facebook groups that advance the misinformation surrounding vaccines. I examined over 300 posts from four public Facebook groups in order to …
