Anonymity With Intent? 'We Lordis Hes Chosin A Chiftane Mervellus', Janet Hadley Williams
Anonymity With Intent? 'We Lordis Hes Chosin A Chiftane Mervellus', Janet Hadley Williams
Studies in Scottish Literature
This paper considers an anonymous, untitled poem, opening “We lordis hes chosin a chiftane mervellus,” known in only one text, in the Bannatyne Manuscript (fols 78v–79r), among “ ballatis full of wisdome and moralitie.” Its enigmatic nature and place among the moral ‘ballatis’ have gone largely unstudied. Focus on the author’s identity (with William Dunbar seen as likely) has excluded the interesting question of possible deliberate anonymity. The poet’s Franco-Scots linguistic agility, and careful play of political interests (Scottish, French and English) are striking, the more so because, unusually, “We lordis” can be dated with some …
The Cultural Context Of The Aberdeen Candlemas Play, Roderick J. Lyall
The Cultural Context Of The Aberdeen Candlemas Play, Roderick J. Lyall
Studies in Scottish Literature
Among the lost plays of medieval Scotland the Aberdeen Candlemas play is one of the most intriguing. Our knowledge of its content derives principally from two lists, dating from 1442 and 1505, dividing the roles between the burgh’s various gilds, although the fact that there was some form of dramatic element rather than merely a procession appears to be confirmed by the discovery in the Dean of Guild’s accounts for 1470-71 of a payment of 16d. to “ye men ye maid scafald to ye candilmes play.” This paper focuses on the presence in the cast of The Three Kings of …

Interpretive Language And Museum Artwork: How Patrons Respond To Depictions Of Native American And White Settler Encounters--A Thematic Analysis, Holli D. Rogerson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to conduct a thematic linguistic analysis of survey responses to museum-quality images depicting various Native American and white settler encounters. The survey asked participants to provide written responses (fill in the blank prompts) to a selection of twelve images composed of photographs and paintings representing one or more of three overarching themes: violence, immersion, and goodwill/collaboration. The research focused on four demographic groups: Latter-day Saints, Native Americans, museum employees, and total participants. Each response was individually analyzed by hand and assigned appropriate classification tags based on the types of words their responses contained including …

“Funk What You Heard” is a beaconing call to all scholars who engage with Hip Hop studies. This article lays out the ways in which Hip Hop studies should properly respond to the wave of oppressions currently pounding the world. With several key date markers in place for Hip Hop studies, Tricia Rose’s Black Noise in 1994 and Murray Foreman and Mark Anthony Neal’s That’s the Joint in 2004, “Funk What You Heard” charts the path forward for the future of Hip Hop studies. Black Noise provided the original blueprint for studying Hip Hop and That’s the Joint! stamped “hip-hop …

“This Ain’T Just A Rap Song”: 2pac, Sociopolitical Realities, And Hip Hop Nation Language, Leah Tonnette Gaines
Journal of Hip Hop Studies
2Pac’s music was not merely rap songs. His music was and continues to be a platform for communicating important messages and concerns with his audiences. To relay these messages, he often used Hip Hop Nation Language (HHNL). In this research, I will conduct a linguistic analysis to illustrate how 2Pac’s music communicated sociopolitical realities through his use of HHNL. To construct possible answers for the questions that guided this work, the researcher transcribed, coded, and analyzed a sample size of 2Pac’s music. From the sample of songs used, the researcher was able to detect three common themes throughout, namely relaying, …
Jews And Science, Sander L. Gilman
Jews And Science, Sander L. Gilman
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
Jews and Science examines the complicated relationship between Jewish identities and the evolving meanings of science throughout the history of Western academic culture. Jews have been not only the agents for study of things Jewish, but also the subject of examination by “scientists” across a range of disciplines, from biology and bioethics to anthropology and genetics. Even the most recent iteration of Jewish studies as an academic discipline—Israel studies—stresses the global cultural, economic, and social impact of Israeli science and medicine.
The 2022 volume of the Casden Institute’s Jewish Role in American Life series tackles a range of issues that …
A Slice Of Teaching: Reading Comprehension Intervention, Kendra Erickson
A Slice Of Teaching: Reading Comprehension Intervention, Kendra Erickson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Reading is an essential life skill that affects both learning, and life outside of school and participating in society. Reading is a complex skill that is influenced by cognitive processes, linguistic abilities, and relevant knowledge. One major component of reading and learning how to read is reading comprehension. The acquisition of reading comprehension is an individual’s ability to learn to understand writing as well as he or she understands spoken language (Perfetti et al. 2013). Reading Comprehension is a crucial component to successful learning for all students but, for some students, reading comprehension is a task that does not come …
Analyzing Patterns Of Complexity In Pre-University L2 English Writing, Zachary M. Lambert
Analyzing Patterns Of Complexity In Pre-University L2 English Writing, Zachary M. Lambert
Theses and Dissertations
The present study involves the creation and analysis of a corpus containing 7747 samples of timed, pre-matriculated L2 English writing from an IEP. The focus of the analysis is on three phrasal complexity measures with time and proficiency as fixed effects, examining their impact on each measure. Results of the analysis suggest that this is true for some phrasal measures, such as nominalizations and attributive adjectives, while others, such as noun-noun phrases, may indicate a lower level of proficiency or lesser allotted writing time. Nominalizations in particular demonstrated a strong relationship with both allotted time and proficiency, further suggesting that …
Spatial Metaphors In Introductory Statements Of Humanities And Stem Disciplines: A Study Of English And Mechanical Engineering Departments, Olalekan T. Adepoju
Spatial Metaphors In Introductory Statements Of Humanities And Stem Disciplines: A Study Of English And Mechanical Engineering Departments, Olalekan T. Adepoju
Publications and Research
Advances in higher education, specifically in science and technology, have engendered a significant shift of interest from a mainly liberal arts curriculum to STEM-related fields of study, creating a rift in the value systems undergirding the two academic domains. One of the ways the disciplinary disparity is institutionally expressed is through the language used in describing the core values of these disciplines, specifically in the introductory statements of departments. Using the lens of spatial metaphor to consider how the language expresses distinct realities that align with the public perceptions of the disciplines, this paper examines the metaphorical framings in the …
Navigating Acculturative Stress: A Guide For Supporting Newcomer Students In California Esl Classrooms, Daniela Lopera Ruiz
Navigating Acculturative Stress: A Guide For Supporting Newcomer Students In California Esl Classrooms, Daniela Lopera Ruiz
Master's Projects and Capstones
Acculturation has been widely studied as a post-migration phenomenon that individuals face when coming in contact with their new recipient culture and environment. The different experiences, tasks, and requirements that newcomers must endure upon arrival may lead to their suffering prolonged periods of discomfort. This moderate, intermediate, or acute feeling of uneasiness is defined as acculturative stress. In it, the continued exposure to stressors such as adjusting to a new culture, rules, behavioral patterns, a second language, finding housing, and obtaining an education and employment can lead to trauma. This field project has been designed to provide educators and allies …

Socialism Of Linguistic Phenomenon: Its Concept And Implications (Readings In Positivist Social Thought And The Implications Of Its Application On Language), Ali Abdel Rahman Ibrahim Taha
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Language is a human phenomenon with multiple aspects. On the one hand, it is a psychological phenomenon and on the other hand it is a social phenomenon. Therefore, I found interest from scholars in various fields, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, and with the influence of the pioneer of sociology, Emil Dor Chayem, language was classified as a social phenomenon by the linguist de Saussure, and this classification resulted in the application of the principles of the positivism approach as defined by Dor Chayem on language. This study aims to identify the positivism approach in its social …

Decolonizing The Brazilian Efl Classroom: Creating Space For Afro-Brazilian Students Of English, Robyn Diane Mosely
Master's Projects and Capstones
ABSTRACT
Afro-Brazilians constitute the majority of Brazil’s total population. When compared to White Brazilians, Afro-Brazilians are more than twice as likely to live in abject poverty. These striking disparities have significant implications for this community and the socioeconomic well-being of the entire country. Securing access to quality secondary education is imperative for the Black communities of Brazil to ascend out of poverty and hardship.
Completing a foreign language program, typically English, followed by successfully passing a rigorous competency exam, is a prerequisite to obtaining a postsecondary degree in Brazil's university system. This assessment can present a dilemma for Black Brazilians …
Teaching Chinese International Students Two-Word Verbs Through Three C’S Approach, Xiaoli Lu
Teaching Chinese International Students Two-Word Verbs Through Three C’S Approach, Xiaoli Lu
Master's Projects and Capstones
This field project probes into miscommunication problems between Chinese international students and native English speakers due to the formers’ lack of knowledge of two-word verbs. Research findings indicated that difficulty in the acquisition of two-word verbs lies in the polysemy and a large number of two-word verbs. The traditional classroom teaching method, which relies on memorizing the meanings of two-word verbs by rote, also brings challenges to Chinese students’ language learning. Furthermore, the frequent use of two-word verbs by native speakers of English in everyday scenarios leads to miscommunication issues with Chinese students who are unfamiliar with the meaning and …

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Mahmoud Darwish and Ahmed Shamlou are considered among the modern poets in the Arab and Iranian world. The presence of different cultures in their poems is one of the common characteristics between them, which led to the worldwide fame of their poems. Christian thoughts and Christian culture were among the common origins of their poems. Therefore, the presence of Jesus Christ and his stories were noticeable in the poems of both Darwish and Shamlou. By employing this great character in their poems, these two poets were able to give their poetry more depth dimensions on the one hand, and on …

Al-Munawun In The Holy Qur’An: A Pragmatic Linguistic Approach (Salsabil) As A Mode, Wathiq Galib Hashim
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The multiplicity of facets and possibilities in the analysis of a specific linguistic issue, or a specific grammatical issue, is a familiar matter that is common in the study of Arabic, indicating the occurrence of disagreement in opinions at the level of a single issue, as occurred in the name Al-Manun (Salsabil) mentioned in the Almighty’s saying: “An eye in it is called Salsabil.” ( [Al-Insan: 18] who was chosen by the research as his field, he saw in it what is sufficient to reveal this phenomenon in the sayings of the people of Arabic and the commentators, and the …

Morphological And Grammatical Issues In The Interpretation Of (Liberation And Enlightenment) In Surat Yusuf From Verse (11 To 21), Zainab Jasim Hasan
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Al-Taher bin Ashour (d. 1393 AH-1973 AD) is one of the brightest linguistic interpreters in the modern era, as he was interested in explaining the meanings of the Holy Qur’an about its hidden and deep implications, and revealing the subtleties of his knowledge and secrets of his eloquence. He wrote his famous book (Al-Tahrir and Enlightenment) in the interpretation of the Holy Qur’an, in which he applied the linguistic lesson. Ibn Ashour was not satisfied with explaining the verses and explaining the reasons for their revelation. Rather he listed the linguistic aspects with their refutation and discussion.

Honey-Bees, Court Ladies, And Beekeeping In Java Before 1500 Ce, Jiří Jákl
Honey-Bees, Court Ladies, And Beekeeping In Java Before 1500 Ce, Jiří Jákl
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
People have been interacting with bees in the Indo-Malay world for thousands of years. Though the practice of robbing bees of honey and wax is relatively well-documented, we know very little about the early history of beekeeping in Southeast Asia. In this study I will use Old Javanese evidence to demonstrate that providing honey bees with artificial cavities was a practice known in Java at least by the twelfth century CE, several centuries earlier than suggested by the historians of beekeeping. In the second part of my contribution I will discuss in detail an intriguing passage in the Sumanasāntaka, a …

Mount Merapi In Drawings And Paintings; A Dynamic Reflection Of Nature, 1800-1930, Ghamal Satya Mohammad
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Mount Merapi in Central Java is one of the world’s most studied volcanoes. The frequent eruptions of this volcano and the densely populated areas on its slopes make Merapi particularly important to scholars of the natural and social sciences. Considerable attention has been devoted to contemporary aspects of this volcano, including research into forecasting and monitoring possible volcanic activity and eruptions. However, research investigating artistic representations of Merapi in a historical context, particularly local artworks referring to how people responded to a natural hazard such as a volcanic eruption, is still rare. In this paper, I explore how artists in …

The Old People Are The Song, And We Are Their Echo: Resurgence Of W̱ Sáneć Law And Legal Theory, Robert Justin Clifford
The Old People Are The Song, And We Are Their Echo: Resurgence Of W̱ Sáneć Law And Legal Theory, Robert Justin Clifford
PhD Dissertations
This dissertation attends to pressing questions of strategy and tactics in relation to Indigenous law revitalization in the context of the climate crisis. Grounded in my own W̱SÁNEĆ legal order, I provide an accounting of the context in which the resurgence of W̱SÁNEĆ law is occurring, and clarity regarding what we hope to accomplish with the revitalization of W̱SÁNEĆ (and more broadly, Indigenous) law, both locally and in response to global climate crisis. Doing so prompts questioning of the very foundations of Canadian constitutionalism, and indeed, our most basic ideologies and conceptualizations of our place and relationships within the world. …
Treatment Of The Mentally Ill In The U.S. Gilded Age, Madeline Whelan
Treatment Of The Mentally Ill In The U.S. Gilded Age, Madeline Whelan
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The maltreatment of the working class and immigrants was quite prominent throughout the Gilded Age of the United States. The endless capitalist desires of a growing industrial nation often left American laborers at the mercy of corporations and businessmen. Workers endured strenuous labor, hazardous work environments, and unjust management; yet, earned barely enough money to pay for their rent, let alone food and other necessities. Immigrants flooded the country with hopes of securing profit for their relatives back home, only to encounter inhumane working conditions and prejudice from nativists. As the distribution of wealth between laborers and the middle and …
