The State Of Oral Health In People With Disabilities And The Impact Of Family-Centered Care On The Oral Health Of Children With Special Health Care Needs, Bedant Chakraborty
The State Of Oral Health In People With Disabilities And The Impact Of Family-Centered Care On The Oral Health Of Children With Special Health Care Needs, Bedant Chakraborty
Theses & Dissertations
Oral diseases are one of the most prevalent non-communicable, chronic diseases of the 21st century. Yet, dental diseases are generally neglected and are a top concern for policymakers globally. The burden of oral diseases disrupts routine activities that affect the overall quality of life, especially for those with special healthcare needs. Dental diseases have also been marked as the “silent epidemic” and are the leading secondary health condition that affects individuals with disabilities. Disabled people are less likely to receive timely and adequate dental care, which could be tied to poor oral health outcomes among them. This group of studies …

Person-Centred Care And Health Justice In A Multicultural World: Holistic Perspectives From Context, Care, And Capabilities, Asmat Ara Islam
Person-Centred Care And Health Justice In A Multicultural World: Holistic Perspectives From Context, Care, And Capabilities, Asmat Ara Islam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Medical ethicists debate whether “one-approach-fits-all” is specifically a problem for disease-oriented paradigms. In developed countries, health systems have adopted limited person-centred care (PCC) paradigms, most of which focus only on patient autonomy. However, these models neither adequately respond to a nexus of relevant aspects, including patients’ vulnerability, needs, and capabilities, nor provide adequate justification that PCC is related to social justice. The central question of this dissertation is: how does a PCC framework that is based on the capabilities approach justify a shift in the current health system toward PCC so that health systems can address health injustices in a …
Essential Protections For Essential Workers: Ethical Considerations For Infection Prevention And Control, Abigail E. Lowe
Essential Protections For Essential Workers: Ethical Considerations For Infection Prevention And Control, Abigail E. Lowe
Theses & Dissertations
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, ethical guidance for workers during epidemics and pandemics centered on healthcare workers, which meant there was not guidance to address critical contextual issues for many on the frontlines of the pandemic. Meat processing workers are a key example of workers deemed essential during the COVID-19 pandemic and facing conditions of elevated risk without adequate public health guidance or resources to control disease spread. Meat processing workers are an underserved, resource-limited, and vulnerable workforce that face occupational health and safety risks. Meat processing and other essential workers have heightened health disparities due to the social determinants …

Months before the pandemic began its wrath on education in the U.S., highlighting inequities that disproportionately impact English Language Learners, the Texas Legislature passed legislation (HB3) that created a funding incentive for starting dual language programs – a type of bilingual education found to be the most beneficial for English learners. As schools presumably “return to normal” and at an inflection point that could define the future of multilingual education in the United States, we catch up with several district’s in the country’s most bilingual region as it wrestles with and fights for how to preserve and promote bilingualism. English …
Performatives In Argentine Supreme Court Dissents: A Jurilinguistic Proposal For Civilian Change Based On The American Common Law, Mariano Vitetta
Performatives In Argentine Supreme Court Dissents: A Jurilinguistic Proposal For Civilian Change Based On The American Common Law, Mariano Vitetta
Journal of Civil Law Studies
This article explores a linguistic defect in how Argentine Supreme Court dissents are written. The reader of these dissents has a hard time distinguishing between a majority opinion and a dissenting opinion, because dissents are written “as if” they were deciding the case. The confusion results from the use of performative language in dissents when adherence to reality and a plain-language approach require modal verbs reflecting the language of suggestion. This is actually the way dissents are expressed in the United States, the jurisdiction from which the Argentine Supreme Court copied its constitutional design. To make the case against the …
Esp In Nursing: Building Communicative Competence For Internationally-Educated Nurses, Sami Vuong
Esp In Nursing: Building Communicative Competence For Internationally-Educated Nurses, Sami Vuong
Master's Projects and Capstones
The nursing shortage in the United States has been an ongoing issue due to nursing burnout and retirement. Together with the COVID-19 pandemic, it has further exhausted the healthcare system’s resources and healthcare providers. In order to sustain the healthcare system in society, a large number of internationally educated nurses (IENs) have been transferred to work in the United States. As a result of different nursing practices, cultures, and communication styles, many IENs experience language and cultural barriers at work. Difficulty in communication influences the quality of patient care provided, which can lead to negative health outcomes for patients and …
Reproductive Health: A Literature Review On Reducing Maternal Mortality Rates Among Afghan Women Using A Tiered Process Of Interventions, Shirley C. Lam
Reproductive Health: A Literature Review On Reducing Maternal Mortality Rates Among Afghan Women Using A Tiered Process Of Interventions, Shirley C. Lam
Master's Projects and Capstones
This literature review examines the risk factors associated with pregnancy that contribute to high maternal mortality rates in Afghanistan and women’s limited access to adequate health services and education. Some of the factors contributing to high maternal mortality rates are political instability/civil conflict, current policies and legislation, workforce shortages in the healthcare field, as well as socioeconomic levels. The underlying theme which influences each of these factors are Afghanistan’s culture and religion. To reduce the rising maternal mortality rates for Afghan women and girls, there must be a shift in mindset from within the culture. A three-layered tiered intervention which …
Teaching English As A Foreign Language In China: A Unit Plan For Educators, Yun Xie
Teaching English As A Foreign Language In China: A Unit Plan For Educators, Yun Xie
Master's Projects and Capstones
The ultimate goal of English learning is to enable students to communicate in English.
However, English education in China ignores the importance of English communicative ability. The problem lies in the teaching method, that is, solely adopting the Grammar Translation Method; the teaching model, only the “teacher-centered” teaching model is adopted for teaching, thus students do not have enough opportunities to practice spoken English; moreover, the teaching materials lack authenticity, practicality and content of target culture.
These three problems were explored as three themes in this field project and provided a unit plan on how to improve these problems. This …
Evaluating Equity In Transportation Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Strategies In Local Climate Action Planning In Oakland, California, Eliza J. Kane
Master's Projects and Capstones
Emissions from California’s transportation sector contribute to global climate change and impact local air quality and public health. Forty-one percent of California’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2019 were from transportation. Transportation emissions are also a source of many health-harming air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter. Disadvantaged communities in California experience disproportionate impacts from transportation emissions and suffer worse health effects, including higher incidences of asthma, cardiovascular disease, and premature death. Cities have led the way in policymaking to mitigate and adapt to climate change, including creating Climate Action Plans (CAPs) to propose strategies to …

Sacred Sex Or Purely Prostitution? Women’S Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Roro Kembang Sore Tomb, Tulungagung, East Java, Indonesia, Diah Ariani Arimbi, Gesang Manggala Nugraha Putra, Nurul Fitri Hapsari
Journal of International Women's Studies
The practice of seeking pesugihan (a Javanese term for fortune or wealth, usually achieved by visiting a sacred burial ground of a historic prominent figure or mythical beings) through free-sex rituals is one of the factors that has increased the prevalence of HIV and AIDS, especially in the Tulungagung region of East Java, Indonesia. Often under the guise of tradition, this practice is maintained without proper supervision from governing agencies. To assess this problem, this study focuses on mapping the origin and distribution of free-sex myths in the pesugihan ritual, especially at the burial site of Nyi Roro Kembang Sore, …
Working Paper Part 1 : The Very First Pilgrimage - An Inspired Trajectory Out Of Africa, Ian S. Mcintosh
Working Paper Part 1 : The Very First Pilgrimage - An Inspired Trajectory Out Of Africa, Ian S. Mcintosh
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
One hundred thousand years ago, give or take, the forebears of some of Australia’s First Nations—by some accounts as few as 150 people—left Africa on an immense journey. After some 2,000 generations, the passage through new and unfamiliar territories of these first modern human beings terminated in a supercontinent that included Australia, Papua, and Tasmania. By some estimates, no more than 150 people—the same number that had originally left Africa—made the final sea crossing that separates Indonesia and Australia. Research on such ancient migrations emphasises population growth, the ‘selfish gene,’ and the territorial imperative, as key drivers of mobility. This …

A Semi-Autoethnographical Account Of The Order Of Malta’S Annual Pilgrimage To Lourdes, Dane Munro Km
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Lourdes, in the French Pyrenees, has been a pilgrimage site since 1858. At present, about six million Roman Catholic pilgrims and others visit Lourdes every year. During the annual weeklong pilgrimage of the Order of St John, an average of about 7,500 participants from 45 countries, including 380 doctors, nurses and pharmacists, 250 priests and other volunteers, are nursing and caring for 1,500 malades (the sick and suffering). This semi-autoethnographical account is based on many years of visitation as a member of the Order of St John and describes the various changes of a political and societal nature, while the …
Emotions At The Border: Verbal Aspects Of The Attari-Wagah Patriotic Pilgrimage, Anna V. Bochkovskaya
Emotions At The Border: Verbal Aspects Of The Attari-Wagah Patriotic Pilgrimage, Anna V. Bochkovskaya
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
For over sixty years the Attari-Wagah checkpoint at the border between India and Pakistan has been a site for the Beating Retreat, a colorful ceremony of lowering the national flags performed jointly by the Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers. This emotional ritual is generally perceived as a demonstration of aggressive designs, on the one hand, and as a symbol of goodwill and possible cooperation between neighbouring countries, on the other.
In recent decades visiting/viewing the border (sīmā darśan) has become an essential part of tourist packages for travellers in North-West India, while the notion of ‘patriotic pilgrimage’ …

Advocacy Journalism And Climate Justice In A Global Southern Country, Shafiq Ahmad Kamboh, Muhammad Ittefaq
School of Communication Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Being among the world’s most affected countries by climate change, Pakistan is facing a variety of cases of climate injustice committed by internal and external drivers. Waisbord’s referred “Advocate-journalist” model carries a good potential to advocate these injustices to stimulate democratic dialogue among the audience that eventually pushes leadership to make eco-friendly policies. This study critically analyses advocacy journalism coverage of cases of local and regional climate injustice in the editorial contents of mainstream Pakistani newspapers by using the quantitative content analysis method. Results reveal that selected newspapers gave inappropriate coverage to climate injustice issues both in quantity and quality. …

Do Esl Students Progress An Entire Actfl Proficiency Sublevel In Both Speaking And Writing Each Semester?, Matthew Salvatore Millar
Do Esl Students Progress An Entire Actfl Proficiency Sublevel In Both Speaking And Writing Each Semester?, Matthew Salvatore Millar
Theses and Dissertations
Many intensive English language students take pretests and posttests at the beginning and end of each semester to determine proficiency gains. Nevertheless, it may not be clear what kinds of gains should be expected over the course of a single semester or how those gains might be influenced by factors such as the learner's first language (L1) or prior proficiency. This study used repeated measures ANOVA and nonparametric tests to examine the speaking and writing pretest and posttest scores of 2331 Novice Mid to Advanced Mid ESL learners over a 15-week semester. Results show that while students on average progressed …
Latkes Or Placki Ziemniaczane?: The Culinary Conception Of Jewishness In Poland’S National Imagination, Elias Andrejs Siddall
Latkes Or Placki Ziemniaczane?: The Culinary Conception Of Jewishness In Poland’S National Imagination, Elias Andrejs Siddall
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Poland, a country ravaged by the events and memory of the Holocaust, has enjoyed a great deal of cultural and religious Jewish revival in the decades since the fall of the Iron Curtain—something never thought possible after War World II. It has also seen a proliferation of high-end restaurants and a robust gastronomic culture develop as it is incorporated into a modern European food landscape. At times their lives paradisiacal and at other times turbulent, Polish Jewry once constituted the largest Jewish community in the World, so what is its status now? And what do non-Jewish Poles think of Jewish …
Worlds Of Their Own: Narrative World-Making In Eighteenth-Century British Women’S Literature, Lisa Renee Brune
Worlds Of Their Own: Narrative World-Making In Eighteenth-Century British Women’S Literature, Lisa Renee Brune
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation argues that female writers in the eighteenth century engaged in fictional acts of world-making. Departing from the new modes of realist writing and the established precedents of romance, such female writers as Eliza Haywood, Charlotte Lennox, Sarah Scott, Sarah Fielding, and Jane Collier created a distinctive mode of utopian writing. They believed that fiction was not restricted to the job of representation but could imagine unrealized social possibilities. The strategies of fictional world-making I analyze include the deployment of romance scripts to change given structures of courtship, the repeated use of romance plot devices and character types to …
Scholastic A Cappella And The Construction Of Whiteness, Community, And Power, Daniel Fister
Scholastic A Cappella And The Construction Of Whiteness, Community, And Power, Daniel Fister
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Vocal-only student ensembles who cover contemporary popular music at most U.S. high schools and universities, known as a cappella groups, mold students as musical listeners and performers. Though predominantly composed of liberal and progressive people who value diversity and inclusion, a cappella communities perpetuate racialized inequities of sound and representation. I analyze how race, particularly whiteness, shapes the intersecting communities of scholastic a cappella through ideologies of sound (i.e. singing and arranging styles), social structures (i.e. audition processes, competition policies, and judging rubrics), and discourses (how a range of a cappella practitioners discuss, or not, social categories such as race …
Extensive Behavioral Phenotyping Of Williams Syndrome Locus Relevant Mouse Models To Assess Contributions Of Oxytocin And Gtf2ird1, Kayla Rose Nygaard
Extensive Behavioral Phenotyping Of Williams Syndrome Locus Relevant Mouse Models To Assess Contributions Of Oxytocin And Gtf2ird1, Kayla Rose Nygaard
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The Williams Syndrome Critical Region (WSCR) at chromosome 7q11.23 provides a unique opportunity to untangle the relationship between genotype and phenotype in complex behaviors, from fear and anxiety to sociability and sensorimotor processing. Copy number variations (CNVs) in this region result in two syndromes, Williams Syndrome (WS) and Duplication 7q11.23 Syndrome (Dup7), which display phenotypes that may align, indicating a common disruption of a system, or diverge, reflecting an underlying gene dosage-dependent effect. While case studies of atypical deletions resulting in WS have implicated telomeric genes Gtf2ird1 and Gtf2i in the cognitive and behavioral profiles of WS, proving causation requires …
Uneasy Attachments: Postcolonial Anglophilia And Identity Formation In Twentieth-Century Anglophone Autobiographies, Anwesha Kundu
Uneasy Attachments: Postcolonial Anglophilia And Identity Formation In Twentieth-Century Anglophone Autobiographies, Anwesha Kundu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the impact of anglophilia on identity formation in the British empire. Since Britishness was an identity unavailable to non-white citizens of the empire, this attachment was necessarily unrequited. Analyzing works by Cornelia Sorabji, E.R. Braithwaite, V.S. Naipaul, and Tsitsi Dangarembga, I argue that the critical significance of anglophilia does not lie in the postcolonial subject’s success or failure in achieving a British-coded identity, but in the ways in which an affiliation to Britishness can be mobilized to accomplish a variety of personal, political, and social ends. I use a range of autobiographical literature—travel narratives, autobiographical novels, …
Native Language Attrition Among Immigrants, Fawzia Riji
Native Language Attrition Among Immigrants, Fawzia Riji
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This study was a literature review, and it focused on native language attrition among immigrants. For many years, immigrant families have moved to places such as the United States and Europe as well as Canada because of war, abuse, persecution, environmental degradation, and poverty in their home countries. Once immigrant families arrived in their designated country, their children were placed in school. Due to the struggle with the language barrier, kids and adults quickly started to focus extensively on learning the English language.
The research occurred due to parents' raised concerns regarding their children's inability to communicate in their first …
