Strategies For Improving Mental Health And Well Being Used By Adults Ageing With Hiv: A Qualitative Exploration, Patrick N. Mwangala, Ryan G. Wagner, Charles R. Newton, Amina Abubakar

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Background: Physical and mental health problems are common among older adults living with HIV (OALWH). Adaptive coping strategies play a vital role in improving these adults' mental health and well-being despite the deleterious effects of HIV and ageing. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, limited evidence exists on the commonly utilized coping strategies in this population. We explore the coping strategies used by Kenyan OALWH to improve their mental health and wellbeing.

Methods: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted between October and December 2019 with 56 participants: 34 OALWH (53% female), 11 healthcare providers (63% female) and 11 primary caregivers (73% female) in …

Krs And Kar Review Of Models As A Legal Contract Document, Bryan Gibson, Pam Clay-Young, Rachel Catchings, Chris Van Dyke

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

State departments of transportation (DOTs) are expanding the use of electronic engineering data (EED) throughout highway projects — from design and construction through asset management. Included under the umbrella of EED are technologies such as building information modelling (BIM), digital terrain models (DTMs), and 3D models and plan sets. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) Digital Project Delivery (DPD) Initiative is spearheading the transition to EED in the state. While digital delivery promises to streamline project development and management it does not come without hurdles. This report discusses methods for agency wide implementation of EED and highlights best practices for managing, …

Deregulation And The Lawyers' Cartel, Nuno Garoupa, Milan Markovic Aug 2022

Deregulation And The Lawyers' Cartel, Nuno Garoupa, Milan Markovic

Faculty Scholarship

At one time, the legal profession largely regulated itself. However, based on the economic notion that increased competition would benefit consumers, jurisdictions have deregulated their legal markets by easing rules relating to attorney advertising, fees, and, most recently, nonlawyer ownership of law firms. Yet, despite reformers’ high expectations, legal markets today resemble those of previous decades, and most legal services continue to be delivered by traditional law firms. How to account for this seeming inertia?

We argue that the competition paradigm is theoretically flawed because it fails to fully account for market failures relating to asymmetric information, imperfect information, and …

An Unqualified Prohibition Of Self-Help Eviction: Providing A Right To Court Process For All Residential Occupants, Matthew P. Main Aug 2022

An Unqualified Prohibition Of Self-Help Eviction: Providing A Right To Court Process For All Residential Occupants, Matthew P. Main

Cardozo Law Review

Stability in one’s home is essential to safety, security, and human dignity. The right to court process prior to eviction should be unassailable. Yet, for some of the most marginalized residential occupants, that right does not exist. Nearly every state has codified laws that prohibit landlords from taking the law into their own hands to evict a tenant without a court order. In most states, however, the prohibition of so-called “self-help evictions” hinges on whether an occupant is considered a “tenant” or a “licensee.” The law shelters residential occupants who establish a formal landlord-tenant relationship in the premises where they …

This dissertation examines regulatory responses to global private currencies (GPCs). Through detailed analyses of the history and evolution of private digital currencies, and through case studies of the United States, the European Union, and China, this dissertation identifies five factors that condition regulatory responses: (1) compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) laws, (2) compliance with systems built for fiat currencies, (3) degree of transparency in operations, (4) culture of sovereignty within the nation, and (5) great power competition with other nations. Throughout the dissertation, various political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental (PESTLE) characteristics of GPCs are highlighted. This dissertation also …

Construction Of Mega Individuals Competency Model In Business Environment: A Grounded Theory Approach, Beilei Huang, Jinhua Zhang, Xiyuan Li

Plymouth Business School

The purpose of this research is to explore the new practices derived from the influences of information technology among a certain group, i.e., “mega individuals”. Based on Grounded Theory and interviews from 53 companies, which consist of responses from 56 domestic and international founders, entrepreneurs, professional managers, partners and business elites, this study expounds that “mega individuals”, who constantly develop individual attainment and ability under the influence of business ecosystem evolution, have broken the traditional employment relationship. Through Grounded Theory, the following conclusion can be drawn: “mega individuals” are composed of three key traits: compound ability, collaboration ability and personal …

Immigration Status As A Social Determinant Of Health: An Analysis Of An East Sanjosé-Based Community Farm, Madison Hoffman Jul 2022

Immigration Status As A Social Determinant Of Health: An Analysis Of An East Sanjosé-Based Community Farm, Madison Hoffman

Silicon Valley Sociological Review

The state of California is home to more immigrants than any other state. Local community-based organizations and public health nonprofits are essential in both meeting and advocating for the needs and rights of immigrant populations. Prior research has documented the several social determinants of health and significant barriers to good health faced by immigrant communities, including higher rates of power, generally lower rates of health insurance, utilization of services and treatment, as well as a greater number of negative experiences within the healthcare system. Immigrant communities additionally often experience discrimination and racism which can further contribute to health disparities. This …

Relationships And Retaliation In The #Metoo Era, Nicole Buonocore Porter Jul 2022

Relationships And Retaliation In The #Metoo Era, Nicole Buonocore Porter

Florida Law Review

In this #MeToo era, so much important work is being done (and so many stories are being told and listened to), but very little of the work focuses on retaliation. And none of the work focuses on situations where the fear of retaliation is not necessarily job loss (although that certainly happens) but rather, it is the fear of harming workplace relationships. This Article will use a real-life story of harassment to demonstrate how much workplace relationships matter—especially to women—and how the fear of harming those relationships often affects an employee's willingness to report harassment. Thus, this Article argues for …

An Exploratory Multiple Case Study Of Discipline Practices In A Major Metropolitan Public School District: A Look Into The School To Prison Pipeline, Neil French, Kristin Calvert-French, Phyllis Jackson, Erin King Jul 2022

An Exploratory Multiple Case Study Of Discipline Practices In A Major Metropolitan Public School District: A Look Into The School To Prison Pipeline, Neil French, Kristin Calvert-French, Phyllis Jackson, Erin King

Dissertations

The school to prison pipeline is a phenomenon fed by exclusionary discipline practices that increase the likelihood that a student will have an interaction with the juvenile or criminal justice system at some time in their life; this phenomenon disproportionately affects Black students. Understanding the problem is key to slowing down the school to prison pipeline. This study of a school district in Missouri explores questions about how interpersonal relationships, implicit bias awareness, and school policies influence the learning environment, and how those factors relate to school discipline, which ultimately can lead to the school to prison pipeline. Drawing data …
