This paper includes suggestions for minor amendments to the Zarqa’s paper, and for legal and economic analyzes of the reality of debt financing in financial institutions; regardless of their identity (i.e., Islamic, or conventional). After presenting these detailed comments on Zarqa’s research, the paper begins by answering questions raised by the journal's editorial board. Through the answers, the paper compares normal deferred payment sales, i.e., those that take place outside the spectrum of financial institutions, with usury-based financing. The Riz Test: Teaching Against Islamophobia Through Film, Candace Mixon

This paper offers a concrete tool for teaching against Islamophobia using a film assignment and “the Riz Test.” In four parts, it briefly reviews terminology and literature connected to Islamophobia and Muslimophobia, histories of looking and the power of visual culture, pedagogy and critical viewing habits, the Riz Test, and examples of student engagement and course learning goals met through this assignment. Then, readers can use the concrete tool in their courses and practice critical viewing habits.

With the publication of Medical Aphorisms: Treatises 6–9, the second volume of the Medical Works of Moses Maimonides series, the Middle Eastern Texts Initiative (METI) at the Maxwell Institute continues its project of bringing to light original texts and translations from the scientific, philosophical, and theological traditions of the three great religious civilizations that trace their ancestry to Abraham: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This thesis examines discourses around duʿāʾ in the disciplines of ḥadīth, Islamic Law, and Sufism during the thirteenth to fifteenth century Egypt. I argue that duʿāʾ shaped Muslim daily life and solidified a community of prayer. Invocations generated a discursive tradition and social organization that allows us to document the experience of this praying public. Prayer was at the heart of daily life, and its significance to Muslim devotion made it the subject of commentaries that analysed its language and its embodiment.
