Humidity Reduces Rapid And Distant Airborne Dispersal Of Viable Viral Particles In Classroom Settings, Antun Skanata, Fabrizio Spagnolo, Molly Metz, Davida S. Smyth, John J. Dennehy
Biology Faculty Publications (Archived)
The transmission of airborne pathogens is considered to be the main route through which a number of known and emerging respiratory diseases infect their hosts. While physical distancing and mask wearing may help mitigate short-range transmission, the extent of long-range transmission in closed spaces where a pathogen remains suspended in the air remains unknown. We have developed a method to detect viable virus particles by using an aerosolized bacteriophage Phi6 in combination with its host Pseudomonas phaseolicola, which when seeded on agar plates acts as a virus detector that can be placed at a range of distances away from …

The Covid-19 Pandemic Led To The Redesign Of Library Resources And Services: Turning Crisis Into An Opportunity, Dr. Rajender Kumar
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper describes the opportunities to redesign library resources and services during and after the COVID-19 crisis that has affected the lives of billions of people around the world. During this crisis, Universities, colleges, and schools suspended their normal teaching and learning activities. Crisis can sometimes transform challenges into opportunities. A crisis can be turned into an opportunity if new ways of looking, thinking, and responding are embraced. A result of COVID-19's pandemic outbreaks provided an enormous opportunity to change the information-providing way. Thus, libraries can take it as an opportunity to redesign their information resources and services. By redesigning …
An Investigation Of The Novel Use Of Bacteriophages To Diagnose And Treat Johne's Disease In Cattle, Max Kevane-Campbell
An Investigation Of The Novel Use Of Bacteriophages To Diagnose And Treat Johne's Disease In Cattle, Max Kevane-Campbell
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Johne’s disease is a scourge to dairy farmers all over the world. It is an infectious disease that causes chronic inflammation and lesions along the inside of the small intestine of, primarily, ruminant animals (i.e., cattle and sheep). It is an incurable disease and urgently requires new and radical intervention strategies. Apart from careful on-site farm management practices, little can be offered to farmers to reduce the risk of infection, and nothing short of livestock culling is effective once an animal becomes infected. Currently, there are no vaccines licensed in Ireland or antibiotic treatment strategies available for Johne’s disease. This …

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
On analyzing the results of cell-based assays, we have previously shown that perilla (Perilla frutescens) leaf extract (PLE), a food supplement and orally deliverable traditional Chinese medicine approved by the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration, effectively inhibits SARS-CoV-2 by directly targeting virions. PLE was also found to modulate virus-induced cytokine expression levels. In this study, we explored the anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity of PLE in a hamster model by examining viral loads and virus-induced immunopathology in lung tissues. Experimental animals were intranasally challenged with different SARS-CoV-2 doses. Jugular blood samples and lung tissue specimens were obtained in the acute disease stage (3−4 …

Despite evidence of vaccine safety and efficacy, vaccine hesitancy remains a major global health threat. The COVID-19 vaccine has presented unique vaccine hesitancy concerns compared to parental vaccine hesitancy towards childhood vaccines. South Carolina (SC) is home to a largely conservative population and historically has some of the lowest vaccination coverage rates in the United States of America. The goal of the current study was to identify factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine intentions among SC residents. From November 2020 to September 2021, 300,000 invitations to participate in community testing and complete an online survey were mailed to randomly selected SC …

The Art Of Teaching Anthropology: Examples From Biological Anthropology, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith, Laura D. Lund, Marilyn R. London
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
Teaching in a college or university setting has many challenges, including often-inadequate preparation in graduate school and the requirement to develop new courses, often in a short period of time. Anthropology faculty are at a particular disadvantage because anthropology lacks any discipline-specific journals for the publication of articles on the scholarship of teaching and learning. Many anthropology faculty desire to have more resources available for course and assignment development. In this chapter, we present several examples of course syllabi, class activities, and a sample student paper that faculty can use as they develop or revise anthropology courses.

The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery
The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic impacts pulmonary cancer management since it shares similar clinical features and creates fear among patients to visit hospitals due to possible in-hospital disease transmission. We report a patient who presented with a rare case of a pulmonary neuroendocrine tumor with an ocular involvement, which, unfortunately, experienced a delay in diagnostics. The first hospitalization was due to superior vena cava syndrome, pleural and pericardial effusions, and swollen left eye. The patient was diagnosed with pulmonary cancer, released after the symptoms were relieved, and expected to visit a referral hospital for further diagnostics and treatments. The …

Vaccine Technology VIII
Immunization has been the greatest strategy to prevent sickness and death associated with infectious diseases [1]. So, vaccine technology has evolved to produce more immunogenic vaccines and to avoid the exposure to disease-causing organisms during manufacturing and treatment [2]. Conversely, 2.5 million people are still dying globally each year from vaccine-preventable diseases since the underuse of vaccines and lack vaccines against non-well studied pathogens [2]. Only Cuba, Brazil and Argentina are listed as producers of vaccines against infectious diseases such as yellow fever, leishmaniasis and rotavirus [3]. The roles of mentioned developing countries are crucial because the produced vaccines are …

Vaccine Technology VIII
Vaccination is critical for the prevention and control of infectious-disease outbreaks, being of paramount importance to global health, they are a key component of primary health care and an indisputable human right. Yet far too many people around the world have insufficient access to vaccines. The limited availability and affordability of vaccines to resource low-income countries has created a need for solutions that will ensure effective, affordable vaccine production technology. With potential for more pandemics, the urgency to expand vaccine range has become even more evident.
We will present a collaborative project between UCL and PT Bio Farma in which …

Development Of A Pentavalent Group B Streptococcus (Gbs) Glycoconjugate Vaccine In Africa, Matthew Williams, Ebrahim Mohamed, Patrick Tippoo, Seanette Wilson
Vaccine Technology VIII
A vaccine against Group B Streptococcus (GBS), utilized in a maternal immunization strategy to reduce the burden of GBS mortality and morbidity in infants, has potential for use all over the world, but would have the greatest impact in low-resource countries that have limited access to interventions. Currently there is no vaccine against GBS. The Biovac Institute (Biovac), a private public partnership in South Africa, is developing a pentavalent, polysaccharide-protein conjugate vaccine (PCV) against GBS — using state-of-the-art technology and targeting the most common strains.

The 2014 outbreak of Ebola virus disease in West Africa, chiefly in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, but with cases spreading to other countries highlighted the lack of preparedness for combating infectious disease outbreaks. The virus was first identified in 1976, but vaccine development had proceeded slowly and no candidate vaccines had progressed further than phase I trials. In 2014 two new candidate vaccines entered rapid clinical development with encouraging early results, but efficacy trials were slow to start. Ebola is only one of many known viruses with the potential to cause outbreaks, and with the support of the WHO …

Developing novel vaccine technology platforms to respond to emergency situations such as pandemic threats or zoonotic diseases is a worldwide high priority. Public health at a global scale is frequently influenced by the risk of transmission of infectious diseases from wildlife and domestic animals. Thus, veterinary vaccination and animal health monitoring are highly relevant for the deployment of a preventative global policy in the context of “one world, one health”.
In regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, farmers’ activities are frequently affected by the impact of diseases in poultry such as avian influenza and Newcastle disease (ND). ND is one of …

EpiVax, Inc., a Rhode Island-based Biotechnology company, develops vaccines that exploit T cell immunity using the innovative iVAX vaccine antigen design platform. The premise of our strategy is the crucial role T cells play in development of protective antibody and cell-mediated immunity in natural infection. Because vaccines aim to recapitulate protective immune responses in infection, a vaccine should effectively harness T cell immunity to be protective. The significance of T cell immunity is underscored by COVID-19. Efficacy trial and real-world COVID-19 vaccine data for different vaccine modalities show a single vaccine dose is as much as 90% effective starting 14 …

We have developed a novel E. coli expression system, which we call the Gor/Met strain. Gor/Met E. coli has an oxidative cytoplasm and can express disulfide-bonded proteins as intracellular, soluble, properly-folded proteins. In addition to the oxidative cytoplasm, the strain has been engineered to efficiently cleave the N-terminal methionine found on cytoplasmic E. coli proteins. To create an oxidative cytoplasm, we deleted the gor gene in BL21 E. coli, resulting in an oxidative cytoplasm. We used the gor- strain to produce the conjugate vaccine carrier protein CRM197 in a fermenter. CRM197 was expressed as a soluble, properly …
