Crm As A Psychosocial Intervention For Cancer Patients, Lauren Wakabayashi Sep 2022

Crm As A Psychosocial Intervention For Cancer Patients, Lauren Wakabayashi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The present treatment manual is intended to outline the implementation of an intervention to manage psychological distress in cancer patients. Cancer patients suffer from psychological distress, in part due to physical symptoms that impact well-being. This can create a cycle of poor mental and physical health that is bidirectionally affected by poor responses to physical treatments. Thus, it is necessary to implement interventions for cancer patients that can combat these and other psychological symptoms. The Community Resiliency Model (CRM) has recently emerged as a set of wellness skills that can promote physiological and psychological well-being, as well as minimize negative …

The Community Resiliency Model In Health Decision-Making, Michelle Ngo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This doctoral project reviews the literature to support the utilization of the Community Resilience Model (CRM) for health-related decision making, such as health behavior change and medication adherence. Research has shown that decision-making under significant stress can lead to making less advantageous choices, as the nervous system becomes dysregulated. The evidence in this literature review suggests that self-regulation using skills in the CRM Model can increase one’s ability to effectively making decisions.

Separating Proactive Conservation From Species Listing Decisions, Adrienne I. Kovach, Amanda E. Cheeseman, Joathan B. Cohen, Chadwick D. Rittenhouse, Christopher M. Whipps

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Proactive Conservation is a paradigm of natural resource management in the United States that encourages voluntary, collaborative efforts to restore species before they need to be protected through government regulations. This paradigm is widely used to conserve at-risk species today, and when used in conjunction with the Policy for Evaluation of Conservation Efforts (PECE), it allows for successful conservation actions to preclude listing of species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Despite the popularity of this paradigm, and recent flagship examples of its use (e.g., greater sage grouse, Centrocercus urophasianus), critical assessments of the outcomes of Proactive Conservation are lacking …

Addressing Patient Heterogeneity In Disease Predictive Model Development, Xu Gao, Weining Shen, Jing Ning, Ziding Feng, Jianhua Hu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

This paper addresses patient heterogeneity associated with prediction problems in biomedical applications. We propose a systematic hypothesis testing approach to determine the existence of patient subgroup structure and the number of subgroups in patient population if subgroups exist. A mixture of generalized linear models is considered to model the relationship between the disease outcome and patient characteristics and clinical factors, including targeted biomarker profiles. We construct a test statistic based on expectation maximization (EM) algorithm and derive its asymptotic distribution under the null hypothesis. An important computational advantage of the test is that the involved parameter estimates under the complex …

Amphotericin B is increasingly used in treatment of leishmaniasis. Here, fourteen independent lines of Leishmania mexicana and one L. infantum line were selected for resistance to either amphotericin B or the related polyene antimicrobial, nystatin. Sterol profiling revealed that, in each resistant line, the predominant wild-type sterol, ergosta-5,7,24-trienol, was replaced by other sterol intermediates. Broadly, two different profiles emerged among the resistant lines. Whole genome sequencing then showed that these distinct profiles were due either to mutations in the sterol methyl transferase (C24SMT) gene locus or the sterol C5 desaturase (C5DS) gene. In three lines an additional deletion of …
