Mass Production Of Entomopathogens In Less Industrialized Countries, David Grzywacz, Sean Moore, Belinda Luke, Sevgan Subramanian, David Moore, R. J. Rabindra Jan 2022

Mass Production Of Entomopathogens In Less Industrialized Countries, David Grzywacz, Sean Moore, Belinda Luke, Sevgan Subramanian, David Moore, R. J. Rabindra

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Production of entomopathogenic agents as biopesticides, mainly fungal and some viral agents, has been established in many countries of Asia, South America and Africa using low technology approach, often by small to medium scale producers. While these reduced technology systems can generate effective products, these systems require the application of appropriate production methodology and rigorous monitoring if the appropriate quality and safety standards are to be reached. The role of governments in creating and maintaining a policy and regulatory environment that promotes local entomopathogen (EP) production, marketing and use remains important for success. The wider adoption of EP products in …

The Alchemy Of Effective Auditor Regulation, Sarah J. Williams Jan 2022

The Alchemy Of Effective Auditor Regulation, Sarah J. Williams

Lewis & Clark Law Review

The audit profession has repeatedly failed in its obligation to accurately opine on financial statements prepared by companies that trade in U.S. markets. The list of entities that have contributed to the quest for effective regulation of these auditors is long; it includes the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Congress, outside directors of public companies, and the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), a recent congressional creation. Yet, despite 50 years of effort, the formula for efficacious oversight of the audit profession remains elusive.

South Africa’S Reformed Investment Regime As A Model For Developing Countries, John Mayer Jan 2022

South Africa’S Reformed Investment Regime As A Model For Developing Countries, John Mayer

Lewis & Clark Law Review

Beginning in 2012, South Africa decided to unilaterally terminate many Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) with European countries—this represented a departure from the 1990s, where South Africa, like many other developing countries, entered into BITs with wealthy, capital-exporting states in the hopes of attracting foreign direct investment. In 2015, South Africa enacted, in place of the BITs, the Protection of Investment Act, designed to protect foreign investors while also providing the state more freedom to regulate in the public interest. This Comment analyzes the history of South Africa’s BIT policy, and argues that South Africa has suffered minimally, if at all, …

The Promise Of Patent-Backed Finance For Smes And Universities, And Shifting Patent Eligible Subject Matter, Mattias Karlsson Dinnetz, Michael S. Mireles

Lewis & Clark Law Review

This Article reviews and addresses some of the problems concerning adequate capital to develop patented inventions and products, and inhibiting the widespread use of patents to raise financing. The Article divides the IP finance market into three separate, but interrelated markets and analyzes problems, including U.S. patent-eligible subject matter doctrine, within those markets impeding patent-backed financing. The Article provides numerous proposals, some of which are in the literature, and calls for additional research for addressing the issues.

Undue Deference To States In The 2020 Election Litigation, Joshua A. Douglas Jan 2022

Undue Deference To States In The 2020 Election Litigation, Joshua A. Douglas

Lewis & Clark Law Review

This Article provides the first comprehensive analysis of the numerous election law cases that the Supreme Court and the federal appellate courts decided in the lead up to the 2020 election. The picture is bleak. Instead of protecting the constitutional right to vote, the Supreme Court and lower federal appeals courts unduly deferred to state legislatures in how to run the election, with little concern for the difficulties voters faced during a pandemic. If the courts do not alter their jurisprudence, then the only solution may be robust federal legislation or a constitutional amendment that enshrines the right to vote …

Introduction: Dural tails are thickened contrast-enhancing portions of dura associated with some meningiomas. Prior studies have demonstrated the presence of tumor cells within the dural tail, however their inclusion in radiation treatment fields remains controversial. We evaluated the role of including the dural tail when treating a meningioma with stereotactic radiation and the impact on tumor recurrence.

Methods: This is a retrospective, single-institution, cohort study of patients with intracranial World Health Organization (WHO) grade 1 meningioma and identified dural tail who were treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) from January 2012 to December 2018. SRS and …

Intolerance Of Uncertainty And Self-Compassion In Medical Students: Is There A Relationship And Why Should We Care?, Maria Poluch, Jordan Feingold-Link, Dimitrios Papanagnou, Jared Kilpatrick, Deborah Ziring,, Nethra S. Ankam, Md

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Managing the uncertainty of clinical practice represents a significant source of stress for clinicians, including medical students transitioning into the clinical workplace. Self-compassion, a strategy to better cope with stress and burnout, may represent a skill that can be leveraged to better prepare learners for the uncertainty inherent in clinical practice. A negative correlation between intolerance of uncertainty and self-compassion has been demonstrated in undergraduate students and in the general population. An examination of this relationship in medical students may help inform future curricular development for addressing burnout in undergraduate medical education. We electronically administered the Intolerance of Uncertainty Short …

Peninsula Medical School

Background Cardiovascular assessment is central to evaluation of liver transplant (LT) candidates. However, there is a lack of consensus on the diagnostic algorithm for screening for coronary artery disease (CAD), and the place for invasive coronary angiography (ICA) remains undefined. Methods We retrospectively analysed 1201 adults who underwent elective LT assessment over a 5-year period. For patients who underwent LT, survival data to 5 years post-LT was collected. Results ICA was performed in 259 (21.6%): 134 no CAD, 58 mild, 33 moderate, and 34 severe. Detection of CAD was associated with age (OR 1.08, P < 0.01), current smoking (OR 4.92, P < 0.01) and prior CAD (OR 8.93, P < 0.001). Poor performance on cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) was associated with age (OR 1.02, P < .05) and diabetes mellitus (OR 1.54, P < 0.05). 122 (10.2%) patients were declined due to severity of cardiovascular disease. 169/779 (21.7%) patients listed for LT had undergone ICA, and CAD was present in 73/169 (43.2%). The non-risk-adjusted all-cause post-LT 5-year survival was 82.6%, with no difference in survival in those with and without CAD on ICA. In patients with CAD, diabetes was associated with reduced survival (OR 3.78, P < 0.05). Conclusions Multi-modality cardiac evaluation is useful in high-risk patients undergoing LT assessment. ICA can be used with non-invasive assessments and risk factors to delineate candidacy. In selected patients with CAD, LT has been undertaken with comparable post-LT survival.

Case Study On The Impacts Of Covid-19 On Remote Work And Compensation In The San Francisco Bay Area, Carson Stubstad Jan 2022

Case Study On The Impacts Of Covid-19 On Remote Work And Compensation In The San Francisco Bay Area, Carson Stubstad

CMC Senior Theses

COVID-19 has changed the way that organizations conduct business. Stay-at-home orders shifted many workers, who traditionally worked in-person, to remote work. Research has been done to understand the macro impacts and organization impacts of remote work, but very little research has been conducted on the impact of wages. This paper studies the effects of remote work during and after COVID-19 lockdowns on wages. This thesis uses the San Francisco Bay Area as a case study. The findings suggest that remote workers are being paid higher after the lockdown in the area. I analyze these trends by controlling for a variety …

Bubbles Through The Years: An Examination Of Unique And Analogous Characteristics Among Financial Manias From The South Sea Bubble To The Great Financial Crisis, Matthew Hines

CMC Senior Theses

Throughout history, financial bubbles have been shrouded in fear and misunderstanding, with hope, greed, and hearsay fueling inane degrees of risk-taking amongst financial powerhouses and the common retail investor alike. While many studies have been conducted to delve into the unique attributes, causes, effects, and consequences of almost every crisis since adequate data could be recorded and preserved, it is not common for the varying types of crises to be directly compared in their core attributes and price movements. This paper conducts such an examination, with a look into ten different crises across the equity, real estate, and oil markets …

A Serological Analysis Of Sars-Cov-2 Infection In The Obstetric Population, Sophia Rose Jan 2022

A Serological Analysis Of Sars-Cov-2 Infection In The Obstetric Population, Sophia Rose

CMC Senior Theses

In December 2019, the surfacing and spread of a novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, resulted in the global COVID-19 pandemic. As a viral antigen, SARS-CoV-2 poses a particular threat to the obstetric population due to physiological and immunological changes that women face during pregnancy. While recent studies have found that SARS-CoV-2 may have better clinical outcomes as compared to other betacoronaviruses, adverse pregnancy events such as ICU admission, preeclampsia, and/or preterm birth have been associated with COVID-19. Progress has been made in better understanding the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 in pregnancy, but there is still much to be known about the interaction …

A Marxist Re-Imagining Of Capitalism, Alejandro Villegas Jan 2022

A Marxist Re-Imagining Of Capitalism, Alejandro Villegas

CMC Senior Theses

This paper explores the reasons that Hegel and Smith were optimistic about the promise of capitalism. I identify the virtues and characteristics that capitalism would provide in theory which focused on the potential benefits it would have for average person. I then examine capitalism in practice and identify the ways that Hegel and Smith were wrong. I use Henry Hansmann model of the firm and his account of cost, which fits well with the problems I hope to address. With the help of Henry Hansmann’s account of ownership and cost, I offer potential methods to address the failures of the …

A Proposed Method To Verify Physician Visual Estimation Of Intraoperative Corneal Edema From Refractive Measurement Images During Cataract Surgery, Karalee Corley Jan 2022

A Proposed Method To Verify Physician Visual Estimation Of Intraoperative Corneal Edema From Refractive Measurement Images During Cataract Surgery, Karalee Corley

CMC Senior Theses

A patient’s resultant vision quality in a restorative Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS) can be fine tuned via an intraoperative measurement of refractive power and axis of astigmatism in the aphakic state. Standard preoperative measurements often disagree with intraoperative measurements (Optiwave Refractive Analysis; Alcon, Inc.) on account of the inclusion or exclusion of posterior corneal curvature, leaving the ultimate lens selection to physician discretion. One additional suggested cause of disagreement is swelling at the corneal incision site (Corley and Carmack 2020).The following proposes a method to verify visual estimation of intraoperative corneal swelling from 2D gray-scale images collected during …

Does Seclusion Alter Amygdala Activity And Amygdala-Medial Prefrontal Cortex Connectivity Leading To Emotional Dysregulation In Children? A Case For Ending Seclusion And Restraint In Public Schools, Crystal Anyanwu

CMC Senior Theses

The use of seclusion as a disciplinary practice in schools has been cited as an effective way to mitigate a child’s behavior if they pose a threat of imminent danger to others or themselves and an effective means of helping a child regulate their emotions. However, research has shown that this practice has resulted in psychological harm (e.g. traumatic stress responses), physical injuries, and death to both staff applying these techniques and the children experiencing them. The effects of seclusion on the neurodevelopment of children remain widely unknown. Traumatic stress has been shown to increase the volume of the amygdala …

How do we determine the value of ourselves? It is intuitive that our perception of self-worth has an implicit effect on our development as individuals. This thesis explores the process through which women determine their self-worth and why it is problematic.

The Power Of The Influencer: Old Gods, Rejected Elites, And Secular Idols, Laura Brenalvirez Jan 2022

The Power Of The Influencer: Old Gods, Rejected Elites, And Secular Idols, Laura Brenalvirez

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores the phenomena of influencers in America, and what makes their power distinct from institutional forms of authority. As we are disillusioned by the establishment, we turn to influencers, since we have greater exercise of autonomy and agency in our deference. Our parasocial relationships demonstrate an anti-elitist desire to feel truly represented by our authorities. I aim to open scholarship about celebrities through a more charitable lens than many condescending takes.

We’Ve Been Here: A History Of Mexican And Latinx Communities In Anaheim Schools, Marycarmen Montanez Jan 2022

We’Ve Been Here: A History Of Mexican And Latinx Communities In Anaheim Schools, Marycarmen Montanez

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis aims to explore the history of Mexican and Latinx students in Anaheim so that the community has a better understanding of the history of their people before them. This thesis is divided into three chapters, each exploring a different time period within Anaheim’s history and how the city and its schools navigated the Mexican communities who inhabited the city and its surrounding areas. The first chapter looks at the 1910’s to the 1920s, when school segregation and Americanization programs dominated Mexican education in Anaheim. The second chapter looks at the 1960’s and 1970’s when Anaheim school districts tried …

America After Trump: The Rise Of National Conservatism In The United States, Its Potential For Electoral Success, And The Future Of The Republican Party, Jensen Steady Jan 2022

America After Trump: The Rise Of National Conservatism In The United States, Its Potential For Electoral Success, And The Future Of The Republican Party, Jensen Steady

CMC Senior Theses

Since Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election, numerous conservative factions have attempted to fill the void and become dominant within the Republican Party. One of the most visible factions vying for power are the National Conservatives, but this movement has received little examination in academic literature due to its recent formation in 2019. Animated by a vision of nationalism based on historical tradition and the power of the state to push socially conservative goals, National Conservatism represents a distinct political movement that draws on various strands of existing conservative thought, although it does not clearly resemble any of …

A Critical Analysis Of American Foreign Policy In The Syrian Civil War, Sydney Heath Jan 2022

A Critical Analysis Of American Foreign Policy In The Syrian Civil War, Sydney Heath

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores the development of American policy in the Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011 and has caused the world’s largest refugee crisis, among other humanitarian issues. Through analyzing popular debates about U.S. foreign policy in Syria, this project attempts to determine how the United States should have responded to President Bashar al-Assad’s aggression towards his people in order to most effectively alleviate suffering. The analysis finds that the United States under President Obama missed a crucial opportunity to weaken Assad and prevent the suffering of millions of Syrians. This paper also explores the present day implications of …

Rice, Reciprocity, And Generosity: Embedded Ecologies In Hindu Women’S Rituals, Zoe Carlson Jan 2022

Rice, Reciprocity, And Generosity: Embedded Ecologies In Hindu Women’S Rituals, Zoe Carlson

CMC Senior Theses

Hindu women’s perspectives of the more-than-human world are illuminated through ritual. Researching ecological actions millions of people of different faiths across the world partake in every day, in the context of the climate crisis of our present time, is a vital project I undertake in this thesis. I look to Hinduism, which has traditionally been called an “ecological” religion, but without a clear definition of what “ecological” means. I use Vijaya Nagarajan’s theories about Hinduism, women, and ecology as a theoretical guide. I apply her theory of “embedded ecologies” to analyze how knowledge about the environment is layered in cultural, …

Economic Propaganda In The United States, Brooklyn Montgomery Jan 2022

Economic Propaganda In The United States, Brooklyn Montgomery

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis aims to identify and analyze three different forms of economic propaganda: cultural, structural, and political. I first examine ‘Do What You Love’ culture and its impact on the labor force. Chapter Two explores the propagation of neoliberal economics as an objective study, and the final chapter analyzes the use of Black capitalism as a political mechanism to quell Black radical sentiment. In detailing these phenomenons, I investigate the implementation, normalization, and effects, as well as the material repercussions of these ideas and structures.
