Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 has not been precisely known in bronchoscopy procedures. We have designed a cabinet device called Ankara University Bronchoscopy Cabinet (Aubrocab® ) to protect healthcare. We aimed to evaluate preventing effect of Aubrocab® on aerosol spreading by measuring the particles in the bronchoscopy suite. Materials and methods: The patients were categorized into two groups as those who underwent bronchoscopy with and without Aubrocab® . We measured PM 0.5 levels before and after bronchoscopy in the bronchoscopy suite. Results: A total of 82 patients, 62 of whom underwent bronchoscopy with Aubrocab® …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background: While physicians tend to emphasize on physical medical problems, behavioral and cognitive disorders of geriatric patients are usually missed, especially in emergency settings. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of delirium, dementia, and depression (3D) among older patients (≥65 years old) in the Emergency Department (ED) and to evaluate the effect of geriatric 3D on the 6-month and 5-year mortality. Materials and methods: This was a prospective, observational cohort study, including 415 patients from eligible 512 consecutive older patients, who are 65 years of age or older, presenting to the ED of a tertiary care …

Tp-E Interval, Tp-E/Qt, And Tp-E/Qtc Ratios In Patients With Primaryhyperparathyroidism And Their Relationship With Cardiac Arrhythmic Events, Yücel Yilmaz, Şaban Keleşoğlu, Ferhat Gökay, Yasi̇n Şi̇mşek
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is an endocrine disorder characterized by hypercalcemia caused by excessive parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion from the parathyroid gland. PHPT was previously shown to increase cardiac arrhythmias. Besides, new indices, such as the Tpeak-Tend (Tp-e) interval, Tp-e interval/QT interval (Tp-e/QT) ratio, and Tp-e interval/corrected QT interval (Tp-e/QTc) ratio may be associated with ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between PHPT and the changes to Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio. Materials and methods: We carried out the study with 41 patients with PHPT and 40 control subjects. We calculated …

Background/aim: The quality of recovery-15 (QoR-15) is a patient reported outcome questionnaire that measures the quality of recovery after surgery and anesthesia. The QoR-15 has been validated in many languages; Turkish version of the QoR-15 has not yet been established. The aims of this study were to translate the QoR-15 questionnaire into Turkish and to perform a full psychometric evaluation of the Turkish version. Materials and methods: After translating the original English version of the QoR-15 scale into Turkish, the QoR-15T scale was psychometrically validated. This process included validity, reliability, responsiveness, feasibility. The QoR-15T was evaluated before the surgery and …

Background/aim: About half of the cases of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) occurring in childhood/adolescence occur with similar symptoms both in childhood and adulthood. Immunologic stress is claimed to be a risk factor in the etiology of childhood onset OCD. Our aim was to elucidate the relationship between childhood onset OCD risk and MHC complex I and II alleles. Materials and methods: MHC alleles of 49 OCD children together with 277 healthy children (aged 4-12) were analyzed by PCR. Results were evaluated by using univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: A2, A29, C4, DRB3.1, and DRB1*16 alleles were found to …

Irisin Relaxes Rat Thoracic Aorta Through Inhibiting Signaling Pathways Implicatingprotein Kinase C, Sadetti̇n Demi̇rel, Serdar Şahi̇ntürk, Naci̇ye İşbi̇l, Fadil Özyener
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Irisin, a newly identified exercise-derived myokine, has been found involved in a peripheral vasodilator effect. However, little is known regarding the potential vascular activity of irisin, and the mechanisms underlying its effects on vascular smooth muscle have not been fully elucidated. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of irisin on vascular smooth muscle contractility in rat thoracic aorta, and the hypothesis that protein kinase C (PKC) may have a role in these effects. Materials and methods: Isometric contraction-relaxation responses of thoracic aorta rings were measured with an isolated organ bath model. The steady contraction was induced with …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The COVID-19 pandemic majorly disrupted conventional schooling and many countries maintained educational services through distance education. The duration of school closures in Turkey was longer than most OECD countries, thus Turkey prioritized school reopenings in the 2021-2022 academic year to mitigate possible negative outcomes of closures. Here we study the compatibility of implications for school reopenings in Turkey with these practices and assess the first semester of face-to-face schooling. Materials and methods: We have used document analysis to present and compare the practices in Turkey with international practices. We also used a comparative approach to assess the coherence between …

Background/aim: As SARS-CoV-2 continues to spread worldwide, this study brings to light the link that anakinra, a recombinant IL-1 receptor antagonist, has in averting grave clinical outcomes. The objectives of this meta-analysis are to investigate the effects of anakinra in interventional groups compared to control/standard of care groups on mortality along with the provision of a prevalence estimate of the variables associated with death (C-reactive protein-CRP, ferritin, acute respiratory distress syndrome-ARDS). Materials and methods: According to the PRISMA 2020 statement guidelines, a systematic search was conducted from December 19, 2020, until December 10, 2021, with keywords including COVID-19, coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, …

Background/aim: Convalescent plasma (CP) might be an additional treatment modality in COVID-19. The aim of this study was to compare CP-related clinical characteristics and perinatal outcomes in pregnant women with mild or moderate-severe COVID-19. Materials and methods: This prospective cohort study included 36 pregnant women (12 mild and 24 moderate-severe), who underwent CP therapy. The CP obtained from recently recovered donors was transfused to patients together with maximum supportive care and antiviral agents. The groups were then compared in respect of clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, obstetric complications, and neonatal outcomes. Results: Significant differences were determined between the groups in respect …
