Speech-Language Pathologists’ Thoughts About Emotion Regulation Therapy To Improve Students’ Employability, Phyllis R. Scott
Speech-Language Pathologists’ Thoughts About Emotion Regulation Therapy To Improve Students’ Employability, Phyllis R. Scott
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractHigh school graduates with language deficits often have poor emotion regulation (ER), enter the workforce unprepared to meet the emotional demands, and experience workforce outcomes that lead to a poor quality of life. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) teach ER, but little is known about ER-targeted speech-language therapy (ERSLT) for high schoolers with mild-to-moderate language impairments and ER deficits (MMLI/ER). This study was designed to explore SLPs’ views and decisions about providing ER-SLT to improve career readiness and employability for students with MMLI/ER. Several studies, the evidence-based practice (EBP) model, and a thematic analysis approach informed this integrative interpretive description design and …

Juvenile Sex Offender Motivation To Stop Offending While Engaged In Residential Treatment, Lemeita Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe treatment of sex offenders is a controversial issue, yet research on the effectiveness of treatment interventions is limited. There is a great amount of research analyzing the connection between motivation and recidivism; however, what is known about the juvenile sex offender pales in comparison to what is known about adult sex offenders. Utilizing Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory as the theoretical foundation, the purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the lived experiences of male juvenile sex offenders, to better understand how residential treatment impacted their motivation to lead an offense-free lifestyle. Obtaining this information from the first-person …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has indicated that religious families influence the sexual education of their children. This qualitative phenomenological research addressed the research gap of how religious parents engage and communicate with their children concerning sexual education and sexuality. Bronfenbrenner’s multilevel ecological theory supported the notion of parents as first teachers developing the basis for socialization with family, relatives, neighbors, friends, church, schools, peer, and other groups in the community. The study included 10 qualitative data sets collected through guided interviews with parents in four separate conservative faith communities. Data analyses via explication process identified the major themes of self-preparation by parents, communicating …

Human Service Professionals’ Perceptions Of Parentification, Monica Christa Whitson
Human Service Professionals’ Perceptions Of Parentification, Monica Christa Whitson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social researchers coined the term parentification to describe parent–child role reversal and inappropriate familial roles such as adult-like tasks children are held accountable to complete. Previous researchers have not addressed two issues: (a) whether human service professionals [HSPs] adopt the destructive/maladaptive viewpoint or adaptive/resilient viewpoint surrounding parentification and (b) whether HSPs’ preconceived views and attitudes impact service delivery to parentified persons. Obtaining the perceptions of HSPs may allow more insight into what interventional methods need exploring when working with those individuals. The purpose of this generic, qualitative inquiry was to explore the perceptions of male HSPs regarding parentification and how …
