A thiol molecule, 2,6-pyridinediamidoethanethiol (PB9), was synthesized based on the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide scaffold with appended cysteamine groups. PB9 acts as an effective chelator for Pb(II) due to multiple binding sites (N₃S₂) through irreversible binding precipitating Pb(II). Removal of aqueous Pb(II) from solution was demonstrated by exploring the effects of time, initial PB9:Pb(II) ratios, pH, exposure time, and solution temperature. After 15 min the Pb(II) concentrations were reduced from 50.00 ppm to 0.30 ppm (99.4%) and 0.25 ppm (99.5%) for PB9:Pb ratios of 1:1 and 2:1, respectively. 1,2-Diamine substructures are prevalent functional motifs in natural products, pharmaceutical compounds, and ligands. The interesting functionalities of 1,2-diamines have inspired many synthetic chemists to design various methodologies for preparing these structures from simple precursors such as alkenes. In this work, we described two different but related methods using simple and easily accessible reagents for 1,2-diamination of alkenes. In the first method, an alkene undergoes 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with an organic azide to form a 1,2,3-triazoline. Subsequent N-alkylation of the generated 1,2,3-triazoline gives the 1,2,3-triazolinium ion, which is then hydrogenated over Raney Ni with a balloon of H₂ to produce …

Phomopsis stem canker (PSC), caused by species of Diaporthe, is a major disease of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) in the U.S., which can cause yield loss over 40%. The disease prevalence increased since 2010 in the major sunflower producing U.S. states of Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Previous studies on the use of foliar fungicides in managing Phomopsis stem canker indicated mixed results on their efficacy in disease reduction and yield gain. This thesis focuses on the performance and digestibility of corn from different countries in pig diets and how different feed additives can be supplemented to improve boar reproductive performance during heat stress. Corn is the largest energy source in common pig diets. Standard treatment for patients with high-risk neuroblastoma remains multimodal therapy including chemoradiation, surgical resection, and autologous stem cell rescue. Immunotherapy has demonstrated success in treating many types of cancers; however, its use in pediatric solid tumors has been limited by low tumor mutation burdens. Gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRP-R) is overexpressed in numerous malignancies, including poorly-differentiated neuroblastoma. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to GRP-R have yet to be developed but could serve as a potential novel immunotherapy. During the Second World War, African American soldiers were stationed all over the world as part of the American war effort. During these deployments, African Americans encountered a number of white societies, such as those in Britain and Australia, which they generally interacted with cordially. Good relations between African American soldiers and the local white populations angered many white servicemembers, who saw the lack of Jim Crow style segregation as a threat to the racial status quo, and attempted to enforce segregation overseas themselves. Various assessments are used to detect cognitive decline throughout the stages of vascular dementia (VaD); however, the literature lacks a review of assessment efficacy. Early signs of VaD may include a decline in executive functioning, processing speed, attention, visuospatial abilities, and memory retrieval deficits. This review examines peer-reviewed publications addressing the validity and efficacy of widely accepted (and some lesser-known) neuropsychological assessments used to detect cognitive dysfunction in VaD. in addition to some common related medical assessments. Objective:Body integrity dysphoria (BID; also known as body integrity identity disorder, xenomelia, amputee identity disorder, or apotemnophilia) describes a very rare condition in which non-disabled people feel a desire or need for a physical disability (e.g., amputation, paralysis, or blindness). BID is included in the new version of ICD-11 (6C21: body integrity dysphoria), but, thus far, we are without a standard test of whether a subject suffers from BID and, if so, at what intensity. Although memory deterioration is the primary symptom of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), this may not be the first/only deficit of the disorder, necessitating more comprehensive assessment of neuropsychological functioning. This study examined the usefulness of the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence–Second Edition (WASI-II) in the neurocognitive assessment of AD. Participants were 68 individuals classified into AD, depression, and healthy comparison groups administered the WASI-II as part of an outpatient clinical neuropsychological evaluation. Patients with AD obtained significantly lower scores on the WASI-II relative to the standardization sample as well as healthy comparison and depressed participants. Introduction: The first documented case of COVID-19 in Kenya was recorded March of 2020. Co-morbidities including hypertension and diabetes have been associated with increased morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality among COVID-19 patients. This retrospective study describes the clinical characteristics, disease severity, and outcomes among the patient population at a tertiary hospital in Kenya.

Pre-service teacher candidates have experienced extreme stressors from COVID-19 through both the lens of postsecondary students and clinical practitioners. This duality provided a complex understanding of crisis management within instructional settings for future incoming teachers. This article discusses trauma-related student behavior brought on by COVID-19 and introduces agile teaching practices such as reflective practices and integrated use of technology. Reflective practices help educators unpack teaching practices and apply ideas and concepts in novel ways. Technology tools help to strengthen relationships, communication, and collaboration reducing crisis related behavior. Future implications include addressing technology inequity and crisis planning.

With urbanization and industrialization came resultant changes in living and working conditions and subsequent effects on the skeleton. We collected a single specimen of Rattus rattus (Roof Rat) in Highland County, VA, a previously unknown locality for the species. We collected ecto- and endoparasites, including the louse Polyplax spinulosa, the tick Dermacentor variabilis (American Dog Tick), and the nematode Aspicularis americana. which we archived along with the host voucher specimen. Sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene confirmed the rodent species identification based on comparisons to R. rattus sequences available in the GenBank database. At the University level, students and faculty were sent home from campus as rates of COVID-19 soared around the world. Objectives: The objective of this randomised controlled trial in Kenya was to assess the effect of delivering sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information via text message to young people on their ability to reject contraception-related myths and misconceptions.

Design and setting: A three-arm, unblinded randomised controlled trial with a ratio of 1:1:1 in Kwale County, Kenya.

Participants and interventions: A total of 740 youth aged 18–24 years were randomised. Intervention arm participants could access informational SRH text messages on-demand. Background: ST-segment changes to the fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) may indicate fetal acidosis. No large-scale characterization of ECG morphology immediately after birth has been performed, but ECG is used for heart rate (HR) assessment. We aimed to investigate ECG morphology immediately after birth in asphyxiated infants, using one-lead dry-electrode ECG developed for HR measurement.

Methods: Observational study in Tanzania, between 2013-2018. Near-term and term infants that received bag-mask ventilation (BMV), and healthy controls, were monitored with one-lead dry-electrode ECG with a non-diagnostic bandwidth. Background: The variation of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes shapes the risks of cervical cancer and these variations are not well defined in Africa. Nucleotide changes within the L1 gene, nucleotide variability, and phylogeny were explored in relation to HIV in samples from Botswana and Kenya. Methods: A total of 98 HPV-positive cervical samples were sequenced to identify diferent HPV variants. Phylogenetic inferences were used to determine HPV genotypes and investigate the clustering of sequences between women living with HIV (WLWHIV) and -women not living with HIV (WNLWHIV). We aimed to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of penicillin, cefotaxime and ceftriaxone against S. pneumoniae. Methods: The clinical isolates were obtained from patients with invasive pneumococcal disease admitted to Phramongkutklao Hospital, Thailand over a period of 10 years between 2006 and 2015. The in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing of antibiotics including penicillin, ceftriaxone and cefotaxime against S. pneumoniae isolates were determined by E-test.
