Designing Vr Games To Improve Engagement With At-Home Physical Therapy, Andrada Pantelimon Nov 2022

Designing Vr Games To Improve Engagement With At-Home Physical Therapy, Andrada Pantelimon

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are the leading cause of disability worldwide. Every year, 50% of American adults over 18 years-old develop an MSK condition that requires physical therapy (PT). However, only about 35% of patients fully adhere to their plans of treatment. As the population ages and telehealth permeates the PT industry, there is a growing need as well as an opportunity to use new and emerging technologies to create immersive interfaces that increase motivation. This thesis explores the potential VR-based gameful experiences to improve engagement and follow-through with at-home physical therapy for ACL injury, a common acute MSK condition that …

Appley: Approximate Shapley Values For Model Explainability In Linear Time, Md Shafiul Alam Nov 2022

Appley: Approximate Shapley Values For Model Explainability In Linear Time, Md Shafiul Alam

Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations

We have seen complex deep learning models outperforming human benchmarks in many areas (e.g. computer vision, natural language processing). Clever architectures and higher model complexity are two of the major drivers of such outstanding performances. Higher model complexity generally makes the decision-making process of a model opaque to human perception. But understanding the decision-making process is very important for many reasons including enhancing trust in the model's prediction, improving model robustness, gaining actionable insight from why a model made a particular prediction, and discovering new knowledge about a problem. Model explainability has been an active area of research for some …

A Common Mechanism Links Epstein‐Barr Virus Infections And Autoimmune Diseases, Luwen Zhang Nov 2022

A Common Mechanism Links Epstein‐Barr Virus Infections And Autoimmune Diseases, Luwen Zhang

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV) infection is associated with a variety of the autoimmune diseases. There is apparently no unified model for the role of EBV in autoimmune diseases. In this article, the development of autoimmune diseases is proposed as a simple two‐step process: specific autoimmune initiators may cause irreversible changes to genetic materials that increase autoimmune risks, and autoimmune promoters promote autoimmune disease formation once cells are susceptible to autoimmunity. EBV has several types of latencies including type III latency with higher proliferation potential. EBV could serve as autoimmune initiators for some autoimmune diseases. At the same time, EBV may play …

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

The relationships between self-report loneliness and the four humor styles of affiliative, aggressive, self-defeating, and self-enhancing were investigated in 15 countries (N = 4,701). Because loneliness has been suggested to be both commonly experienced and detrimental, we examine if there are similar patterns between humor styles, gender, and age with loneliness in samples of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Across the country samples, affiliative and self-enhancing humor styles negatively correlated with loneliness, self-defeating was positively correlated, and the aggressive humor style was not significantly related. In predicting loneliness, 40.5% of the variance could be accounted. Younger females with lower affiliative, lower …

The Knottiness Of Othering And The Cosmopolitanism Turn In Everyday Religion, Maria Arceño Nov 2022

The Knottiness Of Othering And The Cosmopolitanism Turn In Everyday Religion, Maria Arceño

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

This paper explores the knottiness of othering in Christian-Muslim relations in everyday religion in the urban marginal enclave of Baseco, Philippines. In examining the framing of the other from a sociological perspective, it is necessary to shift from a monolithic understanding of othering to a more nuanced approach that considers the entangled web of poverty, religious diversity, colonial legacies, power relations, the social nature of religion, and the sense of national loyalties that contributes to othering. Additionally, this study presents solidarity narratives as pockets of cosmopolitanism, draws lessons from them, and proposes a fuller cosmopolitan imagination that can mitigate the …

Don Watson. The Passion Of Private White. Sydney: Scribner Australia, 2022. 326 Pp., Raul Pertierra

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt from Book Review: This is both an impressive but also a puzzling book. Don Watson is a gifted writer. His book deals with a complex subject—a passionately driven Vietnam veteran (Neville White) who studies anthropology and devotes his life to helping Donydji, a remote Aboriginal community in Arnhem Land, in the north of Australia. The condition of Australian Aborigines is shocking and reveals the impossibility of modern states to understand, let alone assist them in preserving their culture and traditions as a holistic means of coexisting with mainstream Australian society! The book begins by introducing Neville White and his …

Fratelli Tutti And Social Entrepreneurship: Managing Tensions Within A Culture Of Care, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen Nov 2022

Fratelli Tutti And Social Entrepreneurship: Managing Tensions Within A Culture Of Care, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

The encyclical Fratelli Tutti in Catholic social thought invites its readers to a culture of care in the contemporary context. This paper elaborates on three important considerations in putting this culture of care into practice in business, specifically for social entrepreneurs. First, the new encyclical challenges social entrepreneurs to creatively address ethical issues in a transnational world. Second, the document further emphasizes the focus on businesses as embedded within an integrated community, balancing the challenges between the local and global community. Third, this challenge includes going beyond the same metrics, assumptions, and strategies inscribed in traditional business and economics that …

“You Can Get Clarity That Other Students May Feel The Same Way You Do”: Exploring Students’ Decision-Making Around And Motivations For Engaging In Evaluative Talk About Instructors, Maria Hannah

Communication: Faculty Scholarship

This multimethod study was conducted to explore students’ decision-making to approach or avoid interactions with peers about instructors and investigate motivations for instructional dissent. Participants (N = 124 college students) responded to measures of instructional dissent behavior and motivations for social gossip, then responded to an open-ended question about the risks and benefits of talking about instructors with other students. Quantitative results indicated that expressive and vengeful dissent were related to the following motives for gossiping about instructors: information gathering and validation, group protection, negative influence and social enjoyment. Regression analyses revealed negative influence and group protection account for unique …

Sequencing And Assembling Bear Genomes: The Bare Necessities., Courtney Willey, Ron Korstanje Nov 2022

Sequencing And Assembling Bear Genomes: The Bare Necessities., Courtney Willey, Ron Korstanje

Faculty Research 2022

Unique genetic adaptations are present in bears of every species across the world. From (nearly) shutting down important organs during hibernation to preventing harm from lifestyles that could easily cause metabolic diseases in humans, bears may hold the answer to various human ailments. However, only a few of these unique traits are currently being investigated at the molecular level, partly because of the lack of necessary tools. One of these tools is well-annotated genome assemblies from the different, extant bear species. These reference genomes are needed to allow us to identify differences in genetic variants, isoforms, gene expression, and genomic …

"Why This Post Now?" : Dramaturging Politics And Social Media, Kennedy Kemmerer Nov 2022

"Why This Post Now?" : Dramaturging Politics And Social Media, Kennedy Kemmerer

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Political events have always been influenced by the media, but social media has provided a much stronger influence than the typical newspaper or radio. Users of social media accounts (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, etc.) have the opportunity to share whatever they want, to whoever they want, whenever they want. While social media has given immense opportunity for artists and creators alike, it has also given way for creators to participate in uninformed performance, whether intended or not, with their content. Are social media consumers considering whether content, specifically political content, is actually true or are they accepting it at face …

The Federal Trade Commission—with its broad, independent grant of authority and statutory mandate to identify and prevent unfair and deceptive trade practices—is uniquely situated to prevent and remedy unfair and deceptive data privacy and data security practices. In an increasingly digitized world, data collection, processing, and transfer have become integral to market interactions. Our personal and commercial experiences are now mediated by powerful, information-intensive firms who hold the power to shape what consumers see, how they interact, which options are available to them, and how they make decisions. That power imbalance exposes consumers and leaves them all vulnerable. We all …

Faculty Publications

Background: Brain age is an MRI-derived estimate of brain tissue loss that has a similar pattern to aging-related atrophy. White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are neuroimaging markers of small vessel disease and may represent subtle signs of brain compromise. We tested the hypothesis that WMHs are independently associated with premature brain age in an original aging cohort.

Methods: Brain age was calculated using machine-learning on whole-brain tissue estimates from T1-weighted images using the BrainAgeR analysis pipeline in 166 healthy adult participants. WMHs were manually delineated on FLAIR images. WMH load was defined as the cumulative volume of WMHs. A positive difference …

Interconnected Precarity: A Contemporary Reframing Of Bodily And Earthly Health In Wendell Berry's The Unsettling Of America: Culture And Agriculture, Abigail Pinegar Nov 2022

Interconnected Precarity: A Contemporary Reframing Of Bodily And Earthly Health In Wendell Berry's The Unsettling Of America: Culture And Agriculture, Abigail Pinegar

Theses and Dissertations

Published in 1977, Wendell Berry's book The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture gained widespread popularity. More than half a century later, many of the notions of the body and the earth presented in its seventh chapter, "The Body and the Earth," remain relevant and important for environmental discourse today. Berry's discussion of the body and the earth examines their mutuality and codependence from an ontological, theological, agricultural, and even biological perspective. The coupling of this text with Judith Butler's, Frames of War: When is Life Grievable? contemporizes his argument through its more socio-political and philosophical claims regarding life and …

Utilizing Teslasuit To Analyze Changes In Joint Angles And Galvanic Skin Responses During Slips (A Stress-Inducing Task), Olivia Johnson, Caitlin Ha, Audrey Arenal

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

When experiencing dangerous situations, humans have two different responses: fight or flight. During these moments, the sympathetic nervous system takes over and causes the body to work overtime to give the person the best chance at survival. Although the average person doesn’t face a life-or-death experience every day, slips are fairly common and can trigger this fight-or-flight response. Exploring what happens during a slip and quantifying a body’s response can be difficult. Still, with the help of motion capture suits and biometric sensors, there is a unique opportunity to learn more about the kinematics and physiological responses of the human …
