Mental Health Of College Students, Sydney R. Bolden, Tamara Sutherland
Mental Health Of College Students, Sydney R. Bolden, Tamara Sutherland
Symposium of Student Scholars
Abstract
Mental health is a social topic that is becoming more of an essential aspect of the quality of life for individuals, especially in the young adult population globally. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, depression rates quickly increased, especially in the adolescent and young adult populations causing opportunities in order to socialize and utilize recreation to decrease. This caused the means to seek treatment to be unavailable or unaffordable. Over a 10-year time period, the rate of treatment for mental health issues for college students in the United States increased by 15%, and those that experienced a chronic …
Increasing Translation Services In Labor And Delivery, Victoria Morales
Increasing Translation Services In Labor And Delivery, Victoria Morales
Symposium of Student Scholars
Abstract
Communication is one of the most basic and fundamental concepts in healthcare. Whether between nurse, doctor, patient, or environmental services, effective communication is vital to ensuring patient safety, achieving positive patient outcomes, promoting healthcare, and ensuring that patients make informed decisions. Data was gathered from non-English speaking patient surveys from a Labor and Delivery unit at a metro Atlanta hospital, to determine that not enough translation services were readily available for non-English speaking patients, and as a result, patient outcomes and satisfaction were negatively impacted. According to The International Journal of Translation and Interpreting Research, systemic reviews from multiple …
Learning From Public Spaces In Historic Cities, Cody Josh Kucharski
Learning From Public Spaces In Historic Cities, Cody Josh Kucharski
Symposium of Student Scholars
Successful public spaces in cities are key for enhancing social cohesion and improving health and safety. Learning from historic cities involves the development of representational and analytical tools aimed at capturing their essence as places of human interaction. The research reports findings of the spatial analysis of twenty Adriatic and Ionian coastal cities, which addresses the question of how the network of public spaces calibrates different degrees of spatial enclosure necessary for creating successful social interactions. Cities in the littoral region include well-preserved historic centers that are renowned for the successful integration of urban squares into the urban fabric. For …
Uncovering The Benefits Of Naturalistic Blue-Depleted Lighting In Hospitals: A Qualitative Study, Sam P. Cotton
Uncovering The Benefits Of Naturalistic Blue-Depleted Lighting In Hospitals: A Qualitative Study, Sam P. Cotton
Symposium of Student Scholars
With exponential technological advances, hospitals are tasked with prioritizing which expensive innovations truly impact as many patients as possible to give them the greatest chance of recovering and discharge them earlier. It is no surprise that most of the attention is focussed on pharmaceutical drugs and a variety of different equipment and machinery, but hospital facilities should look into simpler additions that can aid every patient admitted. The use of naturalistic blue-wavelength lighting is something that can benefit each patient’s recovery immensely. Multiple studies have proven positive effects that blue-depleted lighting compared to standard indoor fluorescent lighting has lowered stress …

Symposium of Student Scholars
Undergraduate Student(s): Erick Infante, Abigail Guerrero, Johana Figueroa, Fransely Rivera, Sosa Edomwande, Berenice Lucio Research Mentor: Doreen Wagner Among nurses, do coping mechanisms make a difference in the reduction of reported emotional distress? Background: Emotional distress plays a vast role in a nurse's mental health. The increase in emotional hardship, in recent years, has led to an increase in burnout and greatly contributed to the nursing shortage. The effects of patient mortality within healthcare workers is an issue that requires more attention and research. Therefore, the purpose of this research project is to analyze multiple research articles and determine which …
Shortening Wait-Times In The Emergency Department, Laura Clark
Shortening Wait-Times In The Emergency Department, Laura Clark
Symposium of Student Scholars
Many Americans visit the Emergency Department (ED) every day for a variety of reasons. Some are extreme emergencies while others could be handled by a primary care provider (PCP). However, the EDs throughout the United States and other countries throughout the world are consistently known for their extended wait-times. Evidence has shown the average ED wait-time is about 145 minutes, being significantly longer in other states. In a state of emergency, 145 minutes could mean life or death. Shortening wait-times in the ED is crucial to saving lives, efficiently utilizing staff members, and satisfying patient needs. In this project, various …
Pressure Injury Bundles Vs Routine Pressure Injury Care, Which Will Reduce More Pressure?, Kristina Bennett
Pressure Injury Bundles Vs Routine Pressure Injury Care, Which Will Reduce More Pressure?, Kristina Bennett
Symposium of Student Scholars
Pressure injuries are one of the most major challenges confronted in hospitals today – which can compromise a patient’s well-being, extend a patient's hospital admission, and can potentially contribute to disability or mortality. The prevention of pressure injuries is significant in delivering high-quality healthcare to patients; however, the prevention plan for pressure injury applications has been suboptimal as it causes a delay in medication delivery for nurses. The forms of care that are often used by healthcare professionals to improve HAPIs (hospital-acquired pressure injuries) are pressure preventative bundles – which are a set of evidence-based practices that are implemented reliably …

Profile Of A Spirit-Empowered Leader: Opoku Onyinah, The “African Paul”, David Osei-Nimoh
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Spirit-empowered leadership takes its shape from both the Old and New Testament Scriptures. God raised up, transformed with the Holy Spirit, and set aside some men and women to impact their generations and influence the trajectory of the church. Most operated within the apostolic, prophetic, evangelistic, pastoral, and teacher/scholar paradigms to execute God’s plan for their lives. In contemporary times, however, questions arise as to whether other individuals qualify as effective modern-day Spirit-empowered leaders who operate within the boundaries of these paradigms through the Holy Spirit’s enablement. Consequently, this research sought to examine the spiritual and theological infrastructure behind the …
Paradigms Of Global Spirit-Empowered Leadership, Eric N. Newberg
Paradigms Of Global Spirit-Empowered Leadership, Eric N. Newberg
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Spirit-empowered leaders employ different paradigms of leadership. The aim of the article is to identify, explain, and critique these paradigms. Spirit-empowered leadership is conceived of as belonging to the category of charismatic leadership. Following Max Weber, charismatic leadership is understood as flowing from charisma or giftedness, which is attributed to the leader by his or her followers. The article starts with the findings of theorists concerning charismatic leadership. Then it delineates five paradigms of Spirit-empowered leadership—the apostle, prophet, healing evangelist, pastorpreneur, and teacher/scholar. Examples are offered from global contexts. Last, a summative assessment of the paradigms is conducted, using criteria …
Against These Things There Is No Law: Spirit-Empowered Witness In Secular Uruguay, Rebekah Bled
Against These Things There Is No Law: Spirit-Empowered Witness In Secular Uruguay, Rebekah Bled
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Uruguay is a country unique in Latin America for its secularism. It secularized early, thoroughly, and publicly, under the leadership of President José Batlle y Ordoñez, at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. A century later, Uruguay still boasts the highest percentage of atheists, agnostics, and nones in the continent. This is a country that seems to defy the sometimes triumphalist narratives of the pentecostalization of the global South. Yet, even amidst this backdrop, there are bright spots of Spirit-empowered witness. This article seeks to examine two of these bright spots of Spirit-empowered hope during …

Exploring Stress Mindset And Perceived Stress Between College Student-Athletes And Non-Athletes, Creighton Avery, Amber M. Shipherd, Sarah Gomez, Kelly B. Renner
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(5): 1554-1562, 2022. One’s beliefs about the nature of stress (e.g., stress mindset) play a large role in the extent to which one experiences the detrimental or beneficial outcomes of stress. Stress mindset has been explored in college students, but there is limited research on stress mindsets in student-athletes. Sport can serve as a buffer to the negative impacts of stress for some student-athletes; however, pressures associated with sport participation increase stress in other student-athletes. Therefore, the purpose was to examine potential differences in stress mindset and perceived stress between non-athletes and college student-athletes. We …

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
Several everyday activities were majorly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, adapting these activities to become safe for people to perform and become "covid-friendly" required many studies. Dining out in restaurants was one of the major activities that were affected by this pandemic. Permanently or partially closed, restaurants adapted quickly to sidewalk pickups, and excessive delivery demand, and accordingly, their menus and even the staffing were shortened. Several months later, the foodservice industry was one of the first to move a step forward against coronavirus and positively adapt by coming up with creative and innovative ways to be able to re-open …

The Impact Of Public Debt On Infrastructure In Arab Countries, Hoda Alaeddine
The Impact Of Public Debt On Infrastructure In Arab Countries, Hoda Alaeddine
BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
The level of public debt as a percentage of GDP (the debt-to-GDP ratio) has expanded in Arab countries as a result of chronically high budget deficits, which undermine the ability of these countries to invest in infrastructure such as healthcare, education, and other productive sectors. This paper uses panel data from 19 Arab countries from 2000 to 2020 to examine the impact of public debt on infrastructure. The Generalized Least Squares regression, in which the Hausman test was used to determine whether the model should follow a random effect or a fixed effect, was employed after the Ordinary Least Squares …

Architectural Representations Of Human Rights, El-Bastawissi Y. Ibtihal, Youssef Maged
BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
The United Nations defines the Human Rights as the rights of all human beings, regardless of race, gender, language, religion, nationality, or any other status. These rights include all claims to live freely, to educate and work in equality, and to inhabit humanistic urban and architectural spaces. Throughout the history of architecture, civilisations have generated different perspectives towards respecting the human rights. Temples of Ancient Egyptian Architecture crushed the human scale to introduce religious experiences to their visitors. Tibetan temples over mountains enforced people to make anti-humanistic journeys to reach them. After thousands of years, the mega-scale palaces and cathedrals …

Panarchy Suggests Why Management Mitigates Rather Than Restores Ecosystems From Anthropogenic Impact, David G. Angeler, Ran Hur
Panarchy Suggests Why Management Mitigates Rather Than Restores Ecosystems From Anthropogenic Impact, David G. Angeler, Ran Hur
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Panarchy, a model of dynamic systems change at multiple, interconnected spatiotemporal scales, allows assessing whether management influences ecological processes and resilience. We assessed whether liming, a management action to counteract anthropogenic acidification, influenced scale-specific temporal fluctuation frequencies of benthic invertebrates and phytoplankton assemblages in lakes. We also tested whether these fluctuations correlated with proxies of liming (Ca:Mg ratios) to quantify scale-specific management effects. Using an ecosystem experiment and monitoring data, time series analyses (1998–2019) revealed significant multiscale temporal (and thus panarchy) structure for littoral invertebrates across limed and reference lakes. Such patterns were inconsistent for sublittoral invertebrates and phytoplankton. When …

Exploring Perceptions Of Control Within Offender Cognition And Recidivism Paradigms, Anistasha H. Lightning, Danielle Polage
Exploring Perceptions Of Control Within Offender Cognition And Recidivism Paradigms, Anistasha H. Lightning, Danielle Polage
Student Published Works
Elements of perceived control are associated with recidivism in offender populations. We investigated the application of locus of control to the frequency of personal involvement with the law and to beliefs surrounding the likelihood of future contact with the legal system. We hypothesized that, as the number of sentencings or legal experiences increased, locus of control would externalize. We also predicted that increased legal involvement would lead to greater belief in the likelihood of future involvement. A statistically significant path model suggests that locus of control appears to be a predictor of increased criminality, as opposed to the other way …

Researching ‘Off Rolling’ As A Sensitive Topic: ‘Hard’ Evidence And Experiential Accounts, Elizabeth J. Done
Plymouth Institute of Education
This paper will explore the ways in which behaviour features in the accounts of ‘off rolling’ processes in schools in England volunteered by participants – senior school leaders, SENCos and parents, in an ongoing multi-stranded research project. In addition to analysing these accounts, this paper draws on contextual features and concepts such as parrhesia and authenticity in a probing of methodological considerations. The status of such accounts as data will also be considered given the high stakes accountability environment in which school principals strive to fulfil their legal remit in the field of inclusion. The trustworthiness of findings in qualitative …
