Reparations For The Wrongly Convicted, Gillian Trost
Reparations For The Wrongly Convicted, Gillian Trost
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Wrongly convicted persons should be offered reparations in instances where they have suffered or faced harm as a result of their wrong conviction. Harms can include, but are not limited to, losing physical time, mental health damages, monetary harm, and damages to the person’s reputation. Harms are anything that has diminished a person's quality of life throughout the conviction process and even after exoneration. Failure to offer reparations to these persons is unethical and reparations are a necessary consequence when the judicial system convicts the wrong person. Failure to offer reparations also lessens the judicial system’s accuracy and reliability when …

(R1980) Effect Of Climate Change On Brain Tumor, Pardeep Kumar, Sarita Jha, Rajiv Aggarwal, Govind Kumar Jha
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we introduce a new dynamical model addressing the variation in climate condition due the presence of microorganisms. We also introduce a new dynamical model of cancer growth which includes three interactive cell populations with drug free environment, namely tumor cells, healthy host cells, and immune effector cells. In this, we considered the super growth of tumor cells. For the choice of certain parameters, both of the systems exhibit chaotic behavior. The aim of this work is to design the controller to control the chaos and to provide sufficient conditions which achieve synchronization of two non-identical systems, which …

Facilitating Role Understanding And Collaboration Between Aspiring School Counselors And Principals, Shelby K. Gonzales, Dodie Limberg, Kathleen M. W. Cunningham
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using a convergent mixed-methods design, we investigated role understanding and collaboration between school counselors and principals. Specifically, this study situated aspiring school counselors and principals in a curriculum intervention on the role of their counterpart and then brought the two professions together in a collaborative powerful learning experience. The results of our pilot study demonstrate that both school counselor and educational leadership graduate students benefit from and value a presentation on roles of their opposite counterpart and the opportunity to practice collaboration in their graduate preparation programs.

Understanding And Improving The Activity Of Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalysts In Alkaline And Chloride-Containing Electrolytes, Prajwal Adiga
Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports
Hydrogen is a feedstock in many chemical processes and can also be used as an energy carrier to store, move, and deliver energy produced from other sources. Recently, hydrogen is of interest for storing renewable electricity and helping address the intermittent nature of electricity generation from renewable sources.1 Water electrolysis plays a pivotal role in achieving a green hydrogen economy by sourcing electricity from intermittent renewable sources. However, the efficiency of the electrolysis process is limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics,2-5 whereas the kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are more facile. My work focused on …

Novel Techniques For Quantifying Secondhand Smoke Diffusion Into Children's Bedroom, Sunil Ramchandani
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
The impact of secondhand smoking to health of general population, and specifically children, is a well-known phenomenon that researchers have studied for years. In this dissertation, I extend work done within a secondhand smoke intervention to understand and quantity the impact of intervention on flow of smoke air particle concentration from the main room where smoking generates air particle contamination to a room where a child living in the home sleeps. The paper also explores potential modelling techniques to proactively identify and the impact of the smoke air particles with the intent to discourage adults from smoking in the home …

Infection with COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) is associated with a variety of generalized and specific symptoms, including neurological complications of both the peripheral and central nervous systems. In this case report, we present the case of a previously healthy 55-year-old woman who was diagnosed with transverse myelitis following a previous infection with COVID-19. MRI showed progressive demyelination of the cervical and thoracic spinal cord, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed increased levels of protein and red blood cells and no markers of infection, including negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for COVID-19 antibodies. The patient was treated with a course of methylprednisolone, multiple treatments …

To promote the expansion and adoption of Digital Twins (DTs) in Smart Cities (SCs), a detailed review of the impact of DTs and digitalization on cities is made to assess the progression of cities and standardization of their management mode. Combined with the technical elements of DTs, the coupling effect of DTs technology and urban construction and the internal logic of DTs technology embedded in urban construction are discussed. Relevant literature covering the full range of DTs technologies and their applications is collected, evaluated, and collated, relevant studies are concatenated, and relevant accepted conclusions are summarized by modules. First, the …
Unpaired Image-To-Image Translation With Density Changing Regularization, Shaoan Xie, Qirong Ho, Kun Zhang
Unpaired Image-To-Image Translation With Density Changing Regularization, Shaoan Xie, Qirong Ho, Kun Zhang
Machine Learning Faculty Publications
Unpaired image-to-image translation aims to translate an input image to another domain such that the output image looks like an image from another domain while important semantic information are preserved. Inferring the optimal mapping with unpaired data is impossible without making any assumptions. In this paper, we make a density changing assumption where image patches of high probability density should be mapped to patches of high probability density in another domain. Then we propose an efficient way to enforce this assumption: we train the flows as density estimators and penalize the variance of density changes. Despite its simplicity, our method …

Help Or Hindrance: How Social Media Affects The Selection And Hiring Processes Of Businesses, Alexandra Krska
Management Undergraduate Honors Theses
Continually, young people have been advised to be conscientious of the imagery they put on social media regarding their personal lives in preparation for employment selection. However, the use of social media in the selection process may cause Human Resource professionals to have inadvertent biases toward candidates among other moral and ethical issues. Through extensive research of the thoughts and actions of a plethora of different corporate professionals, I will analyze whether using social media as a tool in the selection process authentically produces positive unbiased results, or whether social media poses more ethical issues. With the hopes to create …

Understanding The Dynamics Of The Structural States Of Cannabinoid Receptors And The Role Of Different Modulators, Anjela Manandhar, Mona H. Haron, Michael L. Klein, Khaled Elokely
Faculty and Student Publications
The cannabinoid receptors CB1R and CB2R are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family. These receptors have recently come to light as possible therapeutic targets for conditions affecting the central nervous system. However, because CB1R is known to have psychoactive side effects, its potential as a drug target is constrained. Therefore, targeting CB2R has become the primary focus of recent research. Using various molecular modeling studies, we analyzed the active, inactive, and intermediate states of both CBRs in this study. We conducted in-depth research on the binding properties of various groups of cannabinoid modulators, including agonists, antagonists, and inverse …

This paper is an exploratory study that investigates data collected and used by health plans and reviews the laws and regulations governing this data to identify the gaps in protections and provide recommendations for eliminating these gaps. Health insurance companies collect a wide array of data about the people they insure, data that is often only peripherally relevant to the service these companies provide. The data environment currently consists of seven categories of data: personal health information, summary health information, personally identifiable information, financial information, professional information, biometric information, and lifestyle data or social indicators of health. Much of this …

Self-Efficacy Perceptions Of Middle School Reading Teachers In Majority Minority Inclusive Classrooms On Their Ability To Achieve Students Success., Debra Jean Lewis
Dissertations (2016-Present)
According to the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2022), the number of students who require special accommodations in the classroom continues to increase. Because studies have shown that positive outcomes for students are directly linked to the self-efficacy of educators (Lotter et al., 2018; Neugebauer et al., 2019), educators who serve these populations must possess high levels of positive self-efficacy to handle the challenges associated with inclusive settings and specialized skills needed to achieve student success. The purpose of this study, which was guided and supported by the Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986), was to …

Background: Long-term treatment adherence is a worldwide concern, with nonadherence resulting from a complex interplay of behaviors and health beliefs. Determining an individual’s risk of nonadherence and identifying the drivers of that risk are crucial for the development of successful interventions for improving adherence. Here, we describe the development of a new tool assessing a comprehensive set of characteristics predictive of patients’ treatment adherence based on the Social, Psychological, Usage and Rational (SPUR) adherence framework. Concepts from existing self-reporting tools of adherence-related behaviors were identified following a targeted MEDLINE literature review and a subset of these concepts were then selected …

Little is known about the genetics of norm violation and aggression in relation to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). To investigate this, we used summary statistics from genome-wide association studies and linkage disequilibrium score regression to calculate a matrix of genetic correlations (rgs) for antisocial behavior (ASB), COVID-19, and various health and behavioral traits. After false-discovery rate correction, ASB was genetically correlated with COVID-19 (rg = 0.51; P = 1.54E-02) and 19 other traits. ASB and COVID-19 were both positively genetically correlated with having a noisy workplace, doing heavy manual labor, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and genitourinary diseases. ASB and COVID-19 …

Solidarity Federalism, Erin F. Delaney, Ruth Mason
Solidarity Federalism, Erin F. Delaney, Ruth Mason
Notre Dame Law Review
Studies of federalism, especially in the United States, have mostly centered on state autonomy and the vertical relationship between the states and the federal government. This Article approaches federalism from a different perspective, one that focuses on state solidarity. We explain how solidarity structures found in constitutional federations—including the United States—generate solidarity obligations, such as duties not to harm other states or their citizens. These duties give rise to principles, such as nondiscrimination, that are vital to federalism. Focusing on interstate relations and relations between states and citizens of other states, we argue that affirming both solidarity and autonomy as …

Factored Adaptation For Non-Stationary Reinforcement Learning, Fan Feng, Biwei Huang, Kun Zhang, Sara Magliacane
Machine Learning Faculty Publications
Dealing with non-stationarity in environments (e.g., in the transition dynamics) and objectives (e.g., in the reward functions) is a challenging problem that is crucial in real-world applications of reinforcement learning (RL). While most current approaches model the changes as a single shared embedding vector, we leverage insights from the recent causality literature to model non-stationarity in terms of individual latent change factors, and causal graphs across different environments. In particular, we propose Factored Adaptation for Non-Stationary RL (FANS-RL), a factored adaption approach that learns jointly both the causal structure in terms of a factored MDP, and a factored representation of …
