Impaired proteostasis is associated with normal aging and is accelerated in neurodegeneration. This impairment may lead to the accumulation of protein, which can be toxic to cells and tissue. In a subset of frontotemporal lobar degeneration with tau pathology (FTLD-tau) cases, pathogenic mutations in the microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) gene are sufficient to cause tau accumulation and neurodegeneration. However, the pathogenic events triggered by the expression of the mutant tau protein remain poorly understood. Here, we show that molecular networks associated with lysosomal biogenesis and autophagic function are disrupted in brains from FTLD-tau patients carrying a MAPT p.R406W mutation. We …
Saving Indian Consumers From Unfair Contract Terms – The Impact Of Section 2(46), Consumer Protection Act, 2019 On The Home Buyers Industry, Shivkrit Rai
International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice
On July 24, 2020, the Central Government notified the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, thereby replacing the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. One of the most significant changes brought about in the new Act is the introduction of a provision dealing with the unfair contract. This article traces how judicial and quasi-judicial forums dealt with unfair clauses in contracts prior to the implementation of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. This is done by discussing different nuances from Competition Commission, and Consumer Commission along with narratives from United Kingdom’s Consumer Rights Act, 2015. The author argues that an explicit provision empowering the Consumer …

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice
As the world shifts to technological advancements, the advent of e-commerce marks its peak, particularly in India, where it has been earmarked as the fastest growing market with an annual growth rate of 51%. While these developments are an important part of globalization, a few challenges come along. Issues like unfair contracts, privacy, data protection, faulty goods, refund or return remained unaddressed as the earlier existing Consumer Protection Act, 1986 did not elucidate on the same. Given the above, the Law Commission of India had recommended that a separate law be enacted for better consumer protection. Based on the recommendations …

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice
The world of the Internet has opened a limitless market for sellers and buyers but at the same time, it has opened a new chapter of infringement and theft of the identity of well-established companies which trade online. Both original and fake companies are attracted by the lucrative market online; this has ultimately resulted in trading in counterfeit products. Digital marketing is more than just thebusiness of disseminating product information for online sales. It involves content building for marketing, designing of the website, information about the product, customer support tools, chat rooms, online payment system etc. Marketing is a commercial …

We all are consumers by birth and remain consumers till death, and at the same time, it is also true that a consumer becomes the victim of exploitation in different ways. Adulterations, underweight, duplicate or cloned goods, and misleading and insufficient information are some ways of victimizing consumers. Today, we are standing at a juncture where we have a series of legislative, judicial, and administrative efforts to protect consumers. On the other hand, we have a plethora of incidents of exploitation of consumers. The nature of the legislation available for the protection of consumers is not purely criminal but sometimes …

Legal Approaches To Liability Of Digital Platform Operators To Consumers, Dmitriy Kozhemyakin, Svetlana Mironova
International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice
This article is devoted to the consideration of approaches to the liability of digital platform operators to consumers. Given that the number of digital consumers who use goods (works, services) purchased using digital platforms is growing, it becomes necessary to define the concept and features of such platforms, determine the relationship between them, consumers and suppliers, as well as identify problems of legal liability of digital platforms. The article draws attention to the fact that despite the differences in the terminology used in legislation and literature (digital platforms, digital platform operators, aggregators, owners of aggregators, etc.), all of the above …

Isolation of online doctoral students intensifies when they transition from coursework to the dissertation/capstone phase, limiting them to interacting with their mentors. A three-round modified Delphi study was conducted to examine mentoring preferences of online doctoral students and faculty. The first round provided qualitative data regarding the preferred mentoring practices for faculty and alumni. Round 1 qualitative data were organized into Likert questions and used in the second round, which resulted in data about frequency of mentoring practices for the same participants from Round 1. The third round provided data about importance of each preference rated by faculty and current …

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
This study updates the existing literature on listening education in two ways: 1) by providing an assessment of an effective listening education intervention and 2) by identifying what college students' self-assessment and reflection revealed as their most common barriers to listening and the actions that helped mitigate those challenges. Through content analysis, five graduate student coders analyzed six consecutive pre-Covid-19 semesters of student submissions to a Listening Log Self-Assessment assignment in an online interpersonal communication course (n = 186). This experiential activity was designed to motivate students' metacognitions to elicit accurate self-appraisals based on reflections of students' current listening encounters …

Prevent Violence, Strengthen Democracy: Electoral Codes Of Conduct For The United States, Cathy Buerger, Tonei Glavinic
Peace and Conflict Studies
As the events of 2020 and January 2021 demonstrated, the United States is not immune from election-related violence, yet efforts to reduce such violence are typically only used in the international development context rather than domestically. One strategy the U.S. advocates for in fledgling democracies is electoral codes of conduct – agreements in which politicians and parties agree to refrain from certain types of harmful speech and behavior, such as targeted harassment of marginalized groups, disinformation, and incitement to violence. In this paper, the authors analyze electoral codes of conduct around the world that restrict political speech in various contexts, …

Palestinian-Arabs Volunteering In State Institutions In Israel: Reconciliation And Peacebuilding Or Conflict And Suspicion?, Edith Blit Cohen, Mays Essa
Peace and Conflict Studies
Volunteering in government institutions by national minorities in conflict with the state raises fascinating issues. The identity of Palestinian-Arabs in Israel is divided, as they belong to the Palestinian people and Arab nation, as well as nominal citizens of Israel. This perception study explores the meaning of the volunteering experience for fifteen Palestinian-Arabs in various Israeli state institutions. Three themes arise from the interview analysis: motives for volunteering, challenges faced by the volunteers, and their coping strategies. The study contributes to the theory and practice of the meaning of volunteering in government institutions for minority members in conflict with the …

How Can You Call Her A Woman? Male Soldiers’ Views On Women In The Drc Armed Forces, Dostin Lakika, Ingrid Palmary
Peace and Conflict Studies
There has been a longstanding body of literature on women in the armed forces at least since the 1970s (Segal, 1999). This literature varies considerably in its approach, from feminist work that reflects on the forms of masculinity produced through military and militarization, to work that considers women’s role in the army and attitudes towards women in the army. Furthermore, policy efforts to increase women’s participation in the army (such as UN Security Council Resolution 1325) have explicitly called for the inclusion of women in peace and security efforts. In this paper, we contribute to this literature by assessing how …

A Case Of Inferior Dislocation Of Right Shoulder, Gauri A. Nair
Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Dislocation of the shoulder is the commonest of all large joint dislocations. Inferior dislocation of the shoulder, also called luxatio erecta, is a rare form. It appears in less than 0.5% of all shoulder dislocations. Patient characteristically presents with an arm locked in upright position - Luxatio erecta. Its etiology, clinical presentation and radiographic findings are distinct. An awareness of associated potential neurovascular injuries and rotator cuff tears is important in this rare entity and should be excluded with high index of suspicion. Preferred modality of treatment depends upon the age of the patient and the extent of neurovascular involvement. …

A Rare Case Of Extra-Ventricular Supra-Sellar Neurocytoma – A Diagnostic Conundrum, Rohan Karkra, Suchitha Satish, Peri Keerthi
Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
The brain and its associated structures are often the primary source or site of metastases for many tumors. Neurocytoma is a relatively rare neuronal neoplasm, first described as an intra-ventricular tumor that is not known to be very aggressive. It constitutes less than 0.5% of CNS neoplasms. Extraventricular Neurocytoma (EVN) is an extremely rare variant, of which only 12 cases have ever been reported in the supra-sellar region. In all of these 12 cases, the patient was initially misdiagnosed; hence, this condition is a diagnostic conundrum. Grossly, the tumor is firm and smooth with extensive blood supply and fibrous tissue. …

There's No Business Like Show Business: Analyzing The Factors Of Broadway Shows That Have The Most Influence Over The Theatre Industry's Recovery From The Covid-19 Shutdown, Megan Swenson
Honors Projects in Accounting
The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the Broadway theatre industry, with all performing arts venues suspending performances for at least 18 months. The economic recession associated with the COVID-19 pandemic left actors, directors, and theater workers unemployed for months on end, causing undue economic harm to individual finances and the industry. Since the reopening of Broadway plays and musicals in the fall of 2021, very few shows have been able to reach pre-pandemic levels of income and attendance. This project aims to use a regression analysis of weekly gross income for Broadway shows to predict what factors will …
Force Majeure Clauses At The Age Of Covid-19: How Should Courts Interpret Them And Why A Conservative Application Is Necessary, Dorothy Swagler
Force Majeure Clauses At The Age Of Covid-19: How Should Courts Interpret Them And Why A Conservative Application Is Necessary, Dorothy Swagler
Global Business Law Review
A force majeure clause aims to define the scope of unforeseeable events that may excuse or delay a party’s performance. In the wake of the Coronavirus (COVID) pandemic, many parties to disputes attempted to turn to force majeure clauses written in boilerplate language. COVID is distinguishable, however, from other historical force majeure events because of its rapid global development and international economic impact brought upon by government restriction and access issues. In effect, these boilerplate clauses coupled with this novel pandemic, left parties in dispute ill-equipped to know whether their force majeure clause was enforceable. This resulted in a flood …

With deep neural network based solution more readily being incorporated in real-world applications, it has been pressing requirement that predictions by such models, especially in safety-critical environments, be highly accurate and well-calibrated. Although some techniques addressing DNN calibration have been proposed, they are only limited to visual classification applications and in-domain predictions. Unfortunately, very little to no attention is paid towards addressing calibration of DNN-based visual object detectors, that occupy similar space and importance in many decision making systems as their visual classification counterparts. In this work, we study the calibration of DNN-based object detection models, particularly under domain shift. …

Sizeism--What Multicultural Education & Training Are Missing, Jen Rynes
Counselor Education Capstones
Training in multiculturalism is a major focus in most counselor education graduate programs. These programs seek to graduate competent counselors who aspire to serve all populations. The harsh reality is that many programs fail to acknowledge body diversity and sizeism in these multicultural courses and trainings. There are a multitude of reasons why body diversity needs to be a part of multicultural education and training. The literature reviewed in this paper has a purpose of discussing those reasons, dismantling the many myths associated with fatness, identifying how body size intersects with other diverse identities, and reviewing current multicultural guidelines and …
