BACKGROUND: A central challenge in preclinical research investigating the biology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the translation of ASD-related social phenotypes across humans and animal models. Social orienting, an observable, evolutionarily conserved behavior, represents a promising cross-species ASD phenotype given that disrupted social orienting is an early-emerging ASD feature with evidence for predicting familial recurrence. Here, we adapt a competing-stimulus social orienting task from domesticated dogs to naturalistic play behavior in human toddlers and test whether this approach indexes decreased social orienting in ASD.
METHODS: Play behavior was coded from the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) in two samples …

The adult Drosophila eye is a powerful model system for phototransduction and neurodegeneration research. However, single cell resolution transcriptomic data are lacking for this tissue. We present single cell RNA-seq data on 1-day male and female, 3-day and 7-day old male adult eyes, covering early to mature adult eyes. All major cell types, including photoreceptors, cone and pigment cells in the adult eye were captured and identified. Our data sets identified novel cell type specific marker genes, some of which were validated in vivo. R7 and R8 photoreceptors form clusters that reflect their specific Rhodopsin expression and the specific Rhodopsin …

PURPOSE: Although the association between delays in (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy initiation and adverse outcomes is well-documented, patient perspective regarding the lived experience among those with breast cancer delay is sparse. Project Start was a qualitative study designed to assess and identify the multilevel factors contributing to the barriers and facilitators of initiating chemotherapy. This report explores specific responses where patients with breast cancer provide insight and advice for newly diagnosed women on preparing for chemotherapy initiation and informs potential interventions to facilitate timely chemotherapy initiation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Women diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer who experienced a ≥60-day delay in …
The Cholera-Fiend: Cheap Fiction, Medical Professionals, And Entertainment, Sariah Fales Harrington
The Cholera-Fiend: Cheap Fiction, Medical Professionals, And Entertainment, Sariah Fales Harrington
Theses and Dissertations
First published in 1849, Charles Averill’s The Cholera-Fiend follows three villains as they attempt to artificially propagate cholera for their own villainous purposes in New York City. Gumbo, a Black servant to one of the villains, is meant to be the humorous relief in the text, but Gumbo experiences a calculated dehumanization from human to disabled, which causes him to be more at-risk for a health crisis—such as a tapeworm or cholera—than his white counterparts. Through analyzing the genre of cheap fiction, the views of medical professionals towards Black bodies, and other ways Black bodies were used as entertainment, I …

Kalamazoo County Housing Plan, Emily Petz, Lee Adams, Gerrit Anderson, Dakota Mccracken, Brian Pittelko
Reports
A healthy housing continuum provides homes for those in a range of incomes or in different life situations. Kalamazoo County has a shortage of housing units at multiple price points. Low rates of construction, high construction costs, increased demand from a growing population, and housing costs that are increasing faster than wages have contributed to the shortage and affordability issues. Fortunately, many strategies are available to help alleviate some of the housing concerns found in the county. These strategies are most effective when community partners band together and implement them as a cohesive unit.

Background Concentrated disadvantaged areas have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 outbreak in the United States (US). Meanwhile, highly connected areas may contribute to higher human movement, leading to higher COVID-19 cases and deaths. This study examined the associations between concentrated disadvantage, place connectivity, and COVID-19 fatality in the US over time. Methods Concentrated disadvantage was assessed based on the spatial concentration of residents with low socioeconomic status. Place connectivity was defined as the normalized number of shared Twitter users between the county and all other counties in the contiguous US in a year (Y = 2019). COVID-19 fatality was measured …
The Effect Of Gut Microbiota On Overwintering Success In Mule Deer, Emma Wilcox
The Effect Of Gut Microbiota On Overwintering Success In Mule Deer, Emma Wilcox
Theses and Dissertations
Mule deer are an important rangeland grazer, large prey species, and game animal for the state of Utah, so herd size is monitored and managed actively. A significant cause of population decline is poor overwintering survival, including from the lack of available forage during winter months. Mule deer energy storage is correlated with greater overwintering success, so physical estimates of energy storage including body condition score (BCS), rump fat (RF), and loin thickness (LT), can be used to track and predict a herd's health. Current methods of collecting deer information are costly, time consuming, and cause physical stress to deer, …

Wildfire Modeling With Data Assimilation, Andrew Johnston
Theses and Dissertations
Wildfire modeling is a complex, computationally costly endeavor, but with droughts worsening and fires burning across the western United States, obtaining accurate wildfire predictions is more important than ever. In this paper, we present a novel approach to wildfire modeling using data assimiliation. We model wildfire spread with a modification of the partial differential equation model described by Mandel et al. in their 2008 paper. Specifically, we replace some constant parameter values with geospatial functions of fuel type. We combine deep learning and remote sensing to obtain real-time data for the model and employ the Nelder-Mead method to recover optimal …
Future Climate Rhetorics Of Belize: A Counter-Apocalyptic Inquiry Into Belize’S Possible, Probable, And Preferable Futures, André Habet
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation investigates future climate rhetorics of Belize through a variety of methods in order to mediate the various conceptions of the future professed in climate policy, experiential phenomenology, and acoustic ecologies of agroecology. Chapter one considers the values embedded in climate change policy documents, specifically the Nation Communications documents composed by Belize’s various ministries since the country signed to the Paris Agreement in 2016. Using the People’s Agreement of Cochamba as an alternative lens, the chapter explores how people-centered, as opposed to market-centered, attunements informing climate policy can potentially lead to a more just, equitable future that does not …

Abstract
Unclean and Unforgiveable
Unclean and Unforgiveable is a historical medical drama wherein the protagonist, Victoria Evans, travels to Richmond, Virginia, to become a nurse trainee in 1862. Using archival and bibliographic research, this writer constructed authoritative, realistic, and emotionally charged scenes for readers to experience the brutalities of war and the harsh realities of nursing in the South. Yet for all her laborious duties carried out with diligence and devotion, Victoria’s beloved Virginia is decimated, and her family is destroyed. Her one marketable skill is nursing using proper hygienic and cleansing techniques. This brings her to the attention of …

Master of Science in Software Engineering Theses
Traditional data collection, storage, and processing of Electronic Health Records (EHR) utilize centralized techniques that pose several risks of single point of failure and lean the systems to a number of internal and external data breaches that compromise their reliability and availability. Addressing the challenges of conventional database techniques and improving the overall aspects of EHR application, blockchain technology is being evaluated to find a possible solution. Blockchain refers to an emerging distributed technology and incorruptible database of records or digital events which execute, validate, and maintain by a ledger technology to provide an immutable architecture and prevent records manipulation …
Investigating Biometrics Of Perimyotis Subflavus In Traditional And Nontraditional Hibernacula In The Southeastern United States As It Relates To Susceptibility To White-Nose Syndrome., Makayla Ferrari
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
Perimyotis subflavus, or tricolored bat, populations have declined significantly since the emergence of white-nose syndrome (WNS) and has been proposed for listing as “endangered” under the United States Endangered Species Act. Traditionally, bats use caves as hibernacula, but as anthropogenic impacts have increased so has the use of manmade structures like culverts and bridges for roosting by several bat species. The internal environment of these anthropogenic structures is influenced by external temperature and humidity differently than caves and may influence P. subflavus winter activity, and thus susceptibility to WNS. One of the most significant differences in P. subflavus roosting behavior …

How Do You Initiate A Weight Discussion With Your Patients?, Alexander Redmann, Rachael Urbaniak, Jessica Neuman
How Do You Initiate A Weight Discussion With Your Patients?, Alexander Redmann, Rachael Urbaniak, Jessica Neuman
DNP and Student Works
Research shows that many providers feel uncomfortable initiating weight discussions related to fear of sounding judgemental and inexperience in weight counseling. This leads to the failure of healthcare providers to intervene before weight issues become a greater diagnosis. The primary objective for this project is to determine if a screening tool aids providers in initiating weight discussions with patients.

Pyrvinium Pamoate: Past, Present, And Future As An Anti-Cancer Drug, Christopher W Schultz, Avinoam Nevler
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Pyrvinium, a lipophilic cation belonging to the cyanine dye family, has been used in the clinic as a safe and effective anthelminthic for over 70 years. Its structure, similar to some polyaminopyrimidines and mitochondrial-targeting peptoids, has been linked with mitochondrial localization and targeting. Over the past two decades, increasing evidence has emerged showing pyrvinium to be a strong anti-cancer molecule in various human cancers in vitro and in vivo. This efficacy against cancers has been attributed to diverse mechanisms of action, with the weight of evidence supporting the inhibition of mitochondrial function, the WNT pathway, and cancer stem cell renewal. …

Law And Indigenous Religion: Theorizing A Complex Relationship, Kristen Elizabeth Lewis
LLM Theses
This thesis asks what preconditions are necessary to think the relation between law and Indigenous religion without marginalizing perspectives, such as those germane to Indigenous religion, that fall outside law’s frame (often figured, erroneously, as ‘objective’ and ‘neutral’). The research grounds itself in the only Supreme Court of Canada case that, to date, has involved Indigenous religious freedoms and s. 2(a) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Ktunaxa Nation v British Columbia 2017 SCC) and in the very few lower court decisions that have followed in its not-unproblematic wake. Inspired by several currents of both Indigenous thought and …

Chemistry Department Faculty Articles
The development of post-Chemical Mechanical Planarization (p-CMP) cleaning processes is critical for the continued miniaturization of Integrated Circuit (IC) and logic device architecture. In order for further extension of Moore’s Law the minimization of critical defects is essential. This work focuses on the development of surface-active cleaning chemistries via the implementation of an α, β-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid additive to create synergy at the liquid-brush-wafer interface. More specifically, the implementation of Itaconic Acid (ItA) will chemically activate an organic residue (i.e., Cu(I)-BTA film) resulting in effective removal at significantly reduced CoF. This work demonstrates that the conjugated structure present in ItA …

A Gating Lever And Molecular Logic Gate That Couple Voltage And Calcium Sensor Activation To Opening In Bk Potassium Channels, Liang Sun, Frank T Horrigan
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
BK channels uniquely integrate voltage and calcium signaling in diverse cell types through allosteric activation of their K+-conducting pore by structurally distinct V and Ca2+ sensor domains. Here, we define mechanisms and interaction pathways that link V sensors to the pore by analyzing effects on allosteric coupling of point mutations in the context of Slo1 BK channel structure. A gating lever, mediated by S4/S5 segment interaction within the transmembrane domain, rotates to engage and stabilize the open conformation of the S6 inner pore helix upon V sensor activation. In addition, an indirect pathway, mediated by the carboxyl-terminal cytosolic domain (CTD) …
