Amplifying Their Voices: Equity And Assistive Technology For Children With Disabilities, Rosemary Queenan Dec 2022

Amplifying Their Voices: Equity And Assistive Technology For Children With Disabilities, Rosemary Queenan

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Assistive technology devices are crucial to the educational development of children who suffer from hearing loss. For some hearing-impaired children, access to hearing aids is vital to their ability to acquire language, develop speech, and socialize. Yet many hard of hearing children are unable to acquire hearing aids because most insurance policies do not cover them. Access to assistive technology devices for hard of hearing individuals has been the subject of long-standing controversy. The law recognizes the benefits of assistive technology devices and includes them within the scope of services school districts may be required to provide in order to …

Deep Learning Models For Analysis Of Non-Destructive Evaluation Data To Evaluate Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks: A Survey, Dayakar Naik Lavadiya, Sattar Dorafshan

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Application of deep learning (DL) for automatic condition assessment of bridge decks has been on the raise in the last few years. From the published literature, it is evident that lot of research efforts has been done in identifying the surface defects such as cracks, potholes, spalling and so forth using supervised learning methods such as deep learning. However, the health of a reinforced concrete bridge deck is jeopardized substantially due to presence of subsurface defects. Subsurface defects in bridge decks are genearlly detected using non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods. Interpertation of NDE data for autonomous deck evaluation requires development of …

Dealing With Acculturative Stress: How International Students’ Personality Traits Help?, Thu Thi Kim Le

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

Studies on international students have gained popularity over the past decades, especially; international students’ experience on acculturative stress has been a significant research topic for researchers in different countries. However, there remains a gap in how personality traits influence the ways that international students deal with acculturative stress. This study aims to investigate acculturative stress-related experiences of five international students from five countries studying in Canada. Applying a collective case study as a qualitative research method and collecting data from semi-structured in-depth interviews, this study expects to describe levels of stress that these students encounter and explore how their personality …

The Role Of Academic Mobility In The (De)Construction Of Internationalization: Dialogues And Perspectives From, In And On Global South & Global North, Ana Rachel M. Mendes

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

International mobility has played a central role in the views, policies, and actions of internationalization of higher education, despite representing a highly excluding, elitist process with flows that tend to reinforce asymmetrical relationships and colonial domination by the Global North of the Global South. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate how the international mobility is related to the construction of internationalization. To this end, the views of students and professors participating in the academic mobility of one university in Brazil, the Global South, and another in Spain, the Global North, will be analyzed through interviews and later they will be …

Eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) is a refractory airway disease accompanied by eosinophilic inflammation, the mechanisms of which are unknown. We recently found that CCL4/MIP-1β-a specific ligand for CCR5 receptors-was implicated in eosinophil recruitment into the inflammatory site and was substantially released from activated eosinophils. Moreover, it was found in nasal polyps from patients with ECRS, primarily in epithelial cells. In the present study, the role of epithelial cell-derived CCL4 in eosinophil activation was investigated. First, CCL4 expression in nasal polyps from patients with ECRS as well as its role of CCL4 in eosinophilic airway inflammation were investigated in an in …

Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (S6K1), a key downstream effector of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), regulates diverse functions, such as cell proliferation, cell growth, and protein synthesis. Because S6K1 was previously known to be localized in the cytoplasm, its function has been mainly studied in the cytoplasm. However, the nuclear localization and function of S6K1 have recently been elucidated and other nuclear functions are expected to exist but remain elusive. Here, we show a novel nuclear role of S6K1 in regulating the expression of the Wnt target genes. Upon activation of the Wnt signaling, S6K1 translocated from the …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In today's world, information is vital for decision making. However, in the 21st century the abundance of information is also causing issues for the people having less expertise and knowledge for synthesizing and using it. The abundance is merely due to advancement in technology including information media, internet and printed books. The advancement in technology particularly the source of communicating information have intensified information complexity, which is, people receive much information in excess of needed and get confused that on which information basis they should make decisions. In this regard, having information literacy is considered one of the most …

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogeneous disease that accounts for ~20% of all childhood leukemias, and more than 40% of children with AML relapse within three years of diagnosis. Although recent efforts have focused on developing a precise medicine-based approach towards treating AML in adults, there remains a critical gap in therapies designed specifically for children. Here, we present ex vivo drug sensitivity profiles for children with de novo AML using an automated flow cytometry platform. Fresh diagnostic blood or bone marrow aspirate samples were screened for sensitivity in response to 78 dose conditions by measuring the reduction in …

Professional Development Impact On Quality Interactions In Home-Based Early Childhood Settings, Theresa Peplinski Dec 2022

Professional Development Impact On Quality Interactions In Home-Based Early Childhood Settings, Theresa Peplinski

Graduate Teacher Education

Recent literature was examined to explore the relationship between professional development and quality interactions in home-based early childhood settings. Home-based child care was identified as a setting preferred by parents (Melvin et al., 2022). However, the educators in these settings often worked alone, worked long hours, and were less likely to have a degree than educators in other early childhood settings (Durden et al., 2016). The understanding of what constituted quality in these under-recognized settings was more challenging to quantify and less studied than quality in other early education settings (Han et al., 2021). A thorough literature review was conducted, …

Machine learning models have recently provided great promise in diagnosis of several ophthalmic disorders, including keratoconus (KCN). Keratoconus, a noninflammatory ectatic corneal disorder characterized by progressive cornea thinning, is challenging to detect as signs may be subtle. Several machine learning models have been proposed to detect KCN, however most of the models are supervised and thus require large well-annotated data. This paper proposes a new unsupervised model to detect KCN, based on adapted flower pollination algorithm (FPA) and the k-means algorithm. We will evaluate the proposed models using corneal data collected from 5430 eyes at different stages of KCN severity …

Art

Hysterical is an exhibition consisting of 11 ceramic sculptures, five paintings, and four digital prints. The work in this show dissects my interactions and experiences with womanhood, femininity, fatness, gender and sexuality. Working within three main themes, I attempt to find my place within those constructs; the first being my relationship with my body and my existence within that body in relation to the rest of the world, the exploitation of and oppression of women and feminine presenting people economically, politically, and socially, and lastly, the onus of violence and the idea of protection. Using familiar imagery as metaphor, I …

Effects Of Diet And Hibernation In Skeletal Muscle Performance, Jishnu K.S. Krishnan Dec 2022

Effects Of Diet And Hibernation In Skeletal Muscle Performance, Jishnu K.S. Krishnan

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Hibernating animals, such as the arctic ground squirrel (AGS), are subjected to a wide range of temperature variations. During hibernation, when they are predominantly physically inactive, body temperature can drop as low as -3°C, while in summer, body temperature can climb as high as 40°C. Torpor is a state of inactivity in an animal induced by a lack of food, which is followed by a fall in body temperature and metabolic rate. Torpor lasts around 21 days in AGS, and the progression of torpor begins with early torpor, followed by mid and late torpor, and culminates with interbout arousal lasting …

Potential Benefits Of The Campus Outdoor Built Environment On Student Stress, Leading To Improved Retention, Kevin Dilliard

Graduate Liberal Studies Theses and Dissertations

University landscape managers often ask themselves, are they making a difference? Since what they do is not a revenue-generating department, how can they validate their true worth beyond making the campus beautiful, which is excellent, but what added value do they bring? As is common practice, when economic times get tough, the landscape department budget is one of the first to be cut, but is that the wisest thing to do? This research was intended to explore the concept that the services landscape managers provide have a return on investment by providing an environment in which students can thrive and …

Regression Modeling Of Complex Survival Data Based On Pseudo-Observations, Rong Rong Dec 2022

Regression Modeling Of Complex Survival Data Based On Pseudo-Observations, Rong Rong

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

The restricted mean survival time (RMST) is a clinically meaningful summary measure in studies with survival outcomes. Statistical methods have been developed for regression analysis of RMST to investigate impacts of covariates on RMST, which is a useful alternative to the Cox regression analysis. However, existing methods for regression modeling of RMST are not applicable to left-truncated right-censored data that arise frequently in prevalent cohort studies, for which the sampling bias due to left truncation and informative censoring induced by the prevalent sampling scheme must be properly addressed. Meanwhile, statistical methods have been developed for regression modeling of the cumulative …

Detecting Transient Events With Genetic Algorithms, Dylan G. Palmieri Dec 2022

Detecting Transient Events With Genetic Algorithms, Dylan G. Palmieri

Computer Science

Accurately detecting and analyzing events in a power system is a difficult, but important task. This project aims to determine whether genetic algorithms are viable - in terms of both accuracy and efficiency - for detecting these events in large sets of power systems data. Although power systems events are intially classified using a trigger-based system at the time of the event, this project aims to show that power systems can be broken down into their component parts (lineto-line voltage, current, etc.) and analyzed in isolation after the fact with similar accuracy. The system attempts to achieve this goal by …

Architects Of Abundance: Indigenous Regenerative Food And Land Management Systems And The Excavation Of Hidden History, Lyla June Johnston Dec 2022

Architects Of Abundance: Indigenous Regenerative Food And Land Management Systems And The Excavation Of Hidden History, Lyla June Johnston

Indigenous Studies

Pre-Columbian and contemporary Indigenous Nations of North and South America (hereafter referred to as Turtle Island and Abya Yala) have managed ecosystems extensively to produce prolific and predictable food systems for themselves and non-humans, whom they often view as relatives. The elements of earth, water, fire, and air are explored to analyze Indigenous soil management, Indigenous aquaculture, Indigenous pyrogenic land management, and Indigenous oral histories, respectively. First, a review of four Indigenous societies and their soil management techniques revealed that none of these systems require outside fertilizer or irrigation to sustain ecocentric food systems on millennial scales. Second, a comparative …

I'M A Killer Whale: The Process Of Cultural Identity Development From The Perspectives Of Young Indigenous Children, Angela Lunda Dec 2022

I'M A Killer Whale: The Process Of Cultural Identity Development From The Perspectives Of Young Indigenous Children, Angela Lunda

Indigenous Studies

This qualitative single case study examined the phenomenon of cultural identity development from the perspective of young Indigenous children situated within the context of their southeast Alaskan community. Decades of assimilationist policies have eroded cultural identity among many Indigenous Alaskans, yet a strong cultural identity is known to be a protective factor for Indigenous peoples. Building on Indigenous identity development theory, the study sought to answer the research questions: (1) How do young children demonstrate their cultural identity through interactions on the Land? (2) How do community organizations support cultural identity development (CID) in young Indigenous children? (3) What role …

Acoustic And Seismic Signature Of Sustained Volcanic Eruptions, Julia E. Gestrich Dec 2022

Acoustic And Seismic Signature Of Sustained Volcanic Eruptions, Julia E. Gestrich

Geosciences

Volcanic eruptions of any size can pose a significant risk to the life and livelihood of humans, as well as to infrastructure and the economy. Understanding the dynamics of an eruption is crucial to providing timely and accurate assessments of the eruption and associated hazard. Ideally the monitoring of volcanic unrest and eruption dynamics is done remotely to minimize exposure to volcanologists and maximize the spatial monitoring coverage of instruments. Another important factor is to have real-time data to facilitate rapid analysis and interpretation. Seismic and acoustic (infrasound) waves have proven useful in terms of remote real-time volcano monitoring. However, …

Implications Of Spatial Population Dynamics For Abundance Estimation And Catch Apportionment Of Alaska Sablefish (Anoplopoma Fimbria), Kari Hammarsten Fenske Dec 2022

Implications Of Spatial Population Dynamics For Abundance Estimation And Catch Apportionment Of Alaska Sablefish (Anoplopoma Fimbria), Kari Hammarsten Fenske

Fisheries

Spatial dynamics in fish populations are challenging to identify and incorporate into population dynamics models due to the large amount of data required and the uncertainty associated with spatial processes. However, ignoring spatial dynamics can result in biased population estimates and negatively affect population sustainability or the ability to meet fishery management goals. My research explored implications of spatial dynamics for the assessment and management of Alaska sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria). Sablefish are highly mobile, targeted in commercial and recreational fisheries, and documented to have spatial variation in population dynamics such as abundance and biomass. However, gaps remain in understanding the …

The Heart And Soul Of Engagement In The Float Pool Team, Kymberly Dexter Dec 2022

The Heart And Soul Of Engagement In The Float Pool Team, Kymberly Dexter

Master's Projects and Capstones

Problem: The assistant nurse manager (ANM) role is considered an entry-level management position and is not intended as a permanent career role. The unintended consequence is that there is a high rate of organizational turnover, making it challenging to build and retain a solid, cohesive, and productive team.

Context: A new manager of a float pool team in a 166-bed community hospital found that with little financial investment, a significant impact is made by holding a safe space for listening to the ANM team and designing education and training around what is most important to frontline managers.

Interventions: A baseline …

Compound-Specific Stable Isotopes Of Amino Acids Reveal The Influence Of Trophic Level And Primary Production Sources On Mercury Concentrations In Fishes From The Aleutian Islands, Alaska, N/A N/A

Marine Biology

Total mercury (THg) concentrations exceed thresholds of concern in some Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus; SSL) tissues from certain portions of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Here, compound-specific stable isotope analyses (CSIA) of carbon in essential amino acids ([delta]¹³CEAA values) and nitrogen in AAs ([delta]¹⁵NAA values) in fish muscle tissue was applied to quantify the proportional contributions of primary production sources and trophic positions of eight prey species (n = 474 total) that are part of SSL diets. Previous THg analyses of fish muscle, coupled with additional monomethylmercury (MMHg) analyses of a subset of samples, substantiated previous findings that fishes from …
