Resilience: Key Factors Associated With Resilience Of Older People In Botswana, Magen Mhaka-Mutepfa, Sheila Shaibu
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
This study aims to determine key factors that predict resilience in older people. A cross-sectional design and quantitative methods were used for this study. Four districts were selected in Botswana using cluster random sampling. Data on resilience from 378 older adults aged 60 years+ [Mean Age (SD) = 71.1(9.0)] was collected using snowballing technique. Data on socio-demographics, protective and risk factors were also collected from urban and rural areas. CHAID (Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detection) analysis was used to predict the strengths of the relationships among resilience and all predictor variables because the data were skewed. Five major predictor …

Bipolar disorder (BD) has been previously associated with clinical signs of premature aging, including accelerated epigenetic aging in blood and brain, and a steeper age-related decline in cognitive function. However, the clinical drivers and cognitive correlates of epigenetic aging in BD are still unknown. We aimed to investigate the relationship between multiple measures of epigenetic aging acceleration with clinical, functioning, and cognitive outcomes in patients with BD and controls. Blood genome-wide DNA methylation levels were measured in BD patients (n = 153) and matched healthy controls (n = 50) with the Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip (Illumina). Epigenetic age estimates were calculated …

Perception Versus Reality: How Do Older Drivers Self-Perceive Their Own Driving Abilities?, Mackenzie Richards
American Journal of Rising Scholar Activities
As the general population ages worldwide, the percentage of drivers aged 65 years and older continues to increase. By the year 2030, one quarter of drivers are projected to be represented in this age category. As a result, it is imperative to continue research efforts involving older adults. At the same time, leading car manufacturers are developing semi- and fully- autonomous vehicles at a rapid rate, which are expected to be available to the public in the next few years. Several research gaps exist regarding older adults’ feelings towards this new technology. However, without a thorough understanding of how older …

Humans transmit cultural information to others in a variety of ways that can affect productivity, cultural success, and ultimately fitness. Not all potential transmitters are expected to be equally preferred by learners or equally willing to influence their culture acquisition. Across socioeconomic opportunities and ages in the human life course, costs and benefits to both learners and potential transmitters are expected to vary, affecting rates of culture transmission from different vectors. Here we examine reported patterns of culture transmission contributing to 92 essential skills among a sample of 421 Tsimane forager-farmers native to Bolivia. Consistent with the expectation that the …

The Role Of Familiarity And The Age-Based Double Standard In Evaluating Memory And Iadl Errors, Kristopher J. Kimbler, Ashley M. Escalon
Adultspan Journal
Research suggests that errors committed by older adults are viewed as more problematic than identical errors committed by younger adults. This study is the first to examine whether these age-based biases are found when evaluating social partners. The current study (N = 162) used a 2 X 2 (target age: young vs. old; familiarity: hypothetical vs. social partner) between-subjects design to assess the extent that familiarity influences the evaluations of errors committed by others. Findings suggest that age-based biases do not differ when evaluating social partners compared to hypothetical targets. Implications for counselors and other healthcare professionals are included.

The Impact Of Increased Interdisciplinary Communication On Hospital Admission Rates In The Geriatric Population: An Integrative Review, Molly K. Langston
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The medical complexity of geriatric residents puts them at an increased risk of hospital readmissions related to coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes, along with other chronic diseases. Geriatric residents of assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care facilities should hold a particular interest to stakeholders, as the simple intervention of increasing early communication and correspondence regarding chronic diseases can have a great impact on quality improvement outcomes as well as financial burden of the institution. Additionally, interdisciplinary communication can be individualized to meet the needs of each geriatric resident in order to reduce the …

Vaccine hesitancy is considered a major barrier to achieving herd immunity against COVID-19. While multiple alternative and synergistic approaches including heterologous vaccination, booster doses, and antiviral drugs have been developed, equitable vaccine uptake remains the foremost strategy to manage pandemic. Although none of the currently approved vaccines are live-attenuated, several reports of disease flares, waning protection, and acute-onset syndromes have emerged as short-term adverse events after vaccination. Hence, scientific literature falls short when discussing potential long-term effects in vulnerable cohorts. The COVAD-2 survey follows on from the baseline COVAD-1 survey with the aim to collect patient-reported data on the long-term …

Improving Our Understanding Of Driving Changes In Preclinical And Early Symptomatic Alzheimer's Disease: The Role Of Naturalistic Driving Studies, Catherine M Roe
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Research on how preclinical and early symptomatic Alzheimer's disease (AD) impacts driving behavior is in its infancy, with several important research areas yet to be explored. This paper identifies research gaps and suggests priorities for driving studies over the next few years among those at the earliest stages of AD. These priorities include how individual differences in demographic and biomarker measures of AD pathology, as well as differences in the in-vehicle and external driving environment, affect driving behavior. Understanding these differences is important to developing future interventions to increase driving safety among those at the earliest stages of AD.
