Center on Aging Staff Publications

The study presents a novel approach to objectively assessing the upper-extremity motor symptoms in spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) using data collected via a wearable sensor worn on the patient’s wrist during upper-extremity tasks associated with the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA). First, we developed an algorithm for detecting/extracting the cycles of the finger-to-nose test (FNT). We extracted multiple features from the detected cycles and identified features and parameters correlated with the SARA scores. Additionally, we developed models to predict the severity of symptoms based on the FNT. The proposed technique was validated on a dataset comprising the seventeen (n …

Background and objectives: There is a critical need for effective interventions to support quality of life for persons living with dementia and their caregivers. Growing evidence supports nonpharmacologic programs that provide care management, disease education, skills training, and support. This cost-benefit analysis examined whether the Care of Persons with Dementia in their Environments (COPE) program achieves cost savings when incorporated into Connecticut's home- and community-based services (HCBS), which are state- and Medicaid-funded.

Research design and methods: Findings are based on a pragmatic trial where persons living with dementia and their caregiver dyads were randomly assigned to COPE with HCBS, or …

Exploring Psychological Detachment, Work-Related Rumination And Role-Centrality In Working From Home, Cora Hurt, Molly Simmons, Katrina Burch Oct 2022

Exploring Psychological Detachment, Work-Related Rumination And Role-Centrality In Working From Home, Cora Hurt, Molly Simmons, Katrina Burch

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Background The change in environment and commute from work to home help to signal psychological detachment, defined by physically and mentally disengaging from work-related thoughts (Smit, 2016). The combination of modern communication technology and a global pandemic has pushed many employees into working from home regularly, eliminating these signals for psychological detachment. Using effort-recovery theory (Meijman & Mulder, 1998), which suggests that investment of mental resources to deal with work-related demands leads to depletion, we hypothesize that work-related rumination will be associated with the inability to psychologically detach from work (Martin & Tesser, 1996). In addition, role centrality is hypothesized …

Systematic Reviews On Hai Topics: A Look At Reporting Practices, Jane Kinkus Yatcilla, Kelly Weigand

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Human-animal interactions (HAI) are being studied with increased frequency, evidenced by a steady increase in the number of published articles and the number of journals publishing them. Evidence synthesis methods like systematic review (SR) provide a stronger level of evidence than individual studies and are often used to inform practice guidelines. To ensure SR accuracy and reliability, they must follow rigorous, prescribed methodologies. Objectives: This study of HAI SRs was designed to determine the characteristics of HAI SRs in terms of publication patterns, human subjects, animal(s) of interest, and outcomes, and to answer: (Q1)Which methodological guideline was followed? Was a …

Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Student Clinicians’ Self-Perceived Competency In Dysphagia Management, R. Jordan Hazelwood, Erin D. Bouldin, Indigo R. Burford, Emily A. Steffen

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are the preferred healthcare providers for managing the direct clinical care of patients with dysphagia. By assessing self-perceived competency during academic training, SLP graduate student clinicians may increase their understanding of their skills in dysphagia management. We modified the Dysphagia Competency Verification Tool (DCVT) to use a 5-point ordinal scale to explore how SLP graduate student clinicians’ self-perception of competency in dysphagia management changes over time and to determine the impact of clinical practicum experiences. Seventy-two SLP graduate student clinicians rated their self-perceived competency for four DCVT domains. We used Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) models to analyze …

In Favor Of Bringing Game Theory Into Urban Studies And Planning Curriculum: Reintroducing An Underused Method For The Next Generation Of Urban Scholars, Brian Mcdonald Gardner

Dissertations and Theses

By looking at some historical examples of Urban Studies literature and theory (and a detailed dive into Neil Smith's "Toward a theory of gentrification…") this thesis makes the case that Game Theory has valid insights to add to the foundation of Urban Studies and Planning and should be included in Masters and Doctorate level curriculums. As a discipline Game Theory has revolutionized multiple other fields, and can be used both mathematically and/or non-mathematically. It is postulated below that the inclusion of Game Theory would help scholars and practitioners arrive at better outcomes. This case is made by reviewing various areas …

A Process For Training In Godliness: A Team Approach To Personal And Spiritual Growth, Kraig Alan Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to address a problem relating to spiritual discipleship within a group of local church men. The men of Heritage Baptist Church may not have a process for training in godliness. The thesis will supply a process for training in godliness, developed by the author and based on numerous streams of thought from the literature with regard to spiritual growth. The thesis will also illustrate hindrances to training in godliness, looking at past and current trends which have stymied spiritual growth, particularly in men. This study will suggest that current methods for training in godliness …

Longitudinal Associations Between Personal Growth And Cognitive Functioning In Adulthood, Masahiro Toyama

Psychology Faculty Research

Objectives: While personal growth has been found to be associated with multiple aspects of health in adulthood, its associations with cognitive functioning have not been fully understood. The present study aimed to assess both directions of such longitudinal associations.

Method: Using data from the second wave (Time 1 [T1]) and third wave (Time 2 [T2]) of the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study (N = 4,206; mean age = 56.0 [standard deviation (SD) = 12.3]), a longitudinal measurement model containing latent variables of episodic memory and executive function was first constructed. Built on the measurement model, a …

Contributions Of Metacognition To Memory Impairment In Psychotic Illness, Rashina Seabury Oct 2022

Contributions Of Metacognition To Memory Impairment In Psychotic Illness, Rashina Seabury

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders are characterized by disruptions of reality testing, most often manifest in the form of hallucinations and delusional ideation. Given that differentiating between the real from the unreal or imagined is critically dependent on episodic and associative memory, deficits in mnemonic processes have been hypothesized to be involved in the genesis of psychotic symptoms. While cognitive impairments in psychotic illness have traditionally been conceptualized as stable disease correlates that have a stronger associations with negative symptoms and functional disability, deficits in metacognition in memory, or metamemory deficits, have been hypothesized to play a crucial role in …

Impacting Rn Intent To Leave By Developing Emotional Intelligence In Frontline Nurse Leaders, Kristin W. Smith Oct 2022

Impacting Rn Intent To Leave By Developing Emotional Intelligence In Frontline Nurse Leaders, Kristin W. Smith

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem Statement: Registered Nurse (RN) turnover is defined as the frequency at which RNs leave the organization within a specified timeframe (Shimp, 2017). Turnover can correlate negatively to patient satisfaction and outcomes, mortality, and overall healthcare costs (Copanitsanou et al., 2017). Frontline leaders, especially those with high emotional intelligence (EI), can have a significant positive influence over RN turnover, yet there is little focus or standard approach on frontline leader EI development (Mansel & Einion, 2019).

Purpose: This DNP project aims to determine if providing professional development focused on emotional intelligence to frontline nursing leaders will impact RN intent to …
