“Islamization” And Crackdown In Ningxia: Another Xinjiang?, Yan Sun Jan 2022

“Islamization” And Crackdown In Ningxia: Another Xinjiang?, Yan Sun

Publications and Research

Since late 2016, Ningxia has drawn attention as a new target in Beijing’s drive to “Sinicize Islam.” The removal of overt signs of the Islamic faith and Arab influences is viewed as representing a new front in the CCP’s sweeping rollback of religious freedom. Is Ningxia another Xinjiang as both the party and its critics fear? This paper argues that it is not at the empirical level but shares with Xinjiang key underlying dynamics at the systemic level. At the empirical level, Ningxia’s “Islamization” stemmed largely from local authorities’ use of the Islamic part of Ningxia’s heritage as a developmental …

What Can We Learn From The Federal Approach To The Prosecution Of Juvenile Crime?, Emily Buss Jan 2022

What Can We Learn From The Federal Approach To The Prosecution Of Juvenile Crime?, Emily Buss

Articles

In a context of widespread concern over our bloated criminal justice system and growing awareness of the harm done to individuals and society by our excessive incarceration policies, any piece of the system that has remained infinitesimally small deserves some attention. In her article, The Federal Juvenile System, 1 Esther Hong highlights the success of the largely overlooked federal juvenile delinquency system in staying extremely small and suggests this system offers lessons for its bloated state and federal counterparts. Although I agree that the federal government’s prosecution of minors under the Federal Juvenile Delinquency Act (“FJDA”) offers some valuable lessons …

Police Agencies On Facebook Overreport On Black Suspects, Ben Grunwald, Julian Nyarko, John Rappaport Jan 2022

Police Agencies On Facebook Overreport On Black Suspects, Ben Grunwald, Julian Nyarko, John Rappaport

Articles

A large and growing share of the American public turns to Facebook for news. On this platform, reports about crime increasingly come directly from law enforcement agencies, raising questions about content curation. We gathered all posts from almost 14,000 Facebook pages maintained by US law enforcement agencies, focusing on reporting about crime and race. We found that Facebook users are exposed to posts that overrepresent Black suspects by 25 percentage points relative to local arrest rates. This overexposure occurs across crime types and geographic regions and increases with the proportion of both Republican voters and non-Black residents. Widespread exposure to …

Promoting Regulatory Prediction, Jonathan Masur, Jonathan Remy Nash Jan 2022

Promoting Regulatory Prediction, Jonathan Masur, Jonathan Remy Nash

Articles

It is essential for environmental protection that private actors be able to anticipate government regulation. If for instance, the Biden Administration is planning to tighten regulations of greenhouse gas emissions, it is imperative that private companies anticipate this regulatory change now, not a few years from now after they have constructed even more coal- and gas-fired power plants. Those additional power plants will mean more irreversible greenhouse gases, and these plants can be politically challenging to shutter once built. The point is general to private actors making decisions in the shadow of potential government regulation. Better information about future government …

Grid Reliability Through Clean Energy, Alexandra Klass, Joshua Macey, Shelley Welton, Hannah Wiseman Jan 2022

Grid Reliability Through Clean Energy, Alexandra Klass, Joshua Macey, Shelley Welton, Hannah Wiseman

Articles

In the wake of recent high-profile power failures, policymakers and politicians have asserted that there is an inherent tension between the aims of clean energy and grid reliability. But continuing to rely on fossil fuels to avoid system outages will only exacerbate reliability challenges by contributing to increasingly extreme climate-related weather events. These extremes will disrupt the power supply, with impacts rippling far beyond the electricity sector.

This Article shows that much of the perceived tension between clean energy and reliability is a failure of law and governance resulting from the United States’ siloed approach to regulating the electric grid. …

Kids Are Not So Different: The Path From Juvenile Exceptionalism To Prison Abolition, Emily Buss Jan 2022

Kids Are Not So Different: The Path From Juvenile Exceptionalism To Prison Abolition, Emily Buss

Articles

Inspired by the Supreme Court’s embrace of developmental science in a series of Eighth Amendment cases, “kids are different” has become the rallying cry, leading to dramatic reforms in our response to juvenile crime designed to eliminate the incarceration of children and support their successful transition to adulthood. The success of these reforms represents a promising start, but the “kids are different” approach is built upon two flaws in the Court’s developmental analysis that constrain the reach of its decisions and hide the true implications of a developmental approach. Both the text of the Court’s opinions and the developmental and …

Mathematical Learning Difficulties: A Subjective Production, Amanda Marina Andrade Medeiros, Cristiano Alberto Muniz

The Mathematics Enthusiast

It is necessary to expand the analysis about affective processes in mathematic learning in different contexts. In Brazil this research area is still in the embryonic phase, but it is a space that has strong potential to respond the gaps that still exist in the field, leading to the understanding affective processes in mathematic learning. It is in this way that the present research aims to analyze how the mathematic learning difficulty is produced in the subjectivity of a child from the elementary school in Brazil. To understand how the student's development occurs in the school space, and how the …

The Importance Of Emotional And Physical Safety In The Success And Development Of Public Spaces, Isabella Wilhelm Jan 2022

The Importance Of Emotional And Physical Safety In The Success And Development Of Public Spaces, Isabella Wilhelm

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Our day-to-day lives consist of formal and informal settlements in the built environment. As humans, we gravitate towards successful informal settlements (public spaces) to conduct activities such as socializing and recharging. Previous research has highlighted the importance of distinct factors in determining the success of public spaces. Still, research has failed to develop the foundation that makes all public places prosper. Through examining successful and unsuccessful public places through case studies, this research analyses the success and importance of our emotional and physical safety in public spaces through the presence or absence of sound, light, nature, boundaries, and order.

Contained Identities: Forms Of Resistance In Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's Dictee And Pamela Lu's Pamela: A Novel, Zohra Qazi

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis analyzes groundbreaking experimental texts by Asian American writers that employ genre-bending formal innovations to resist the uneasy containment of social hierarchies and aesthetic categories. After a brief discussion of Monica Youn’s 2019 poem, “Study of Two Figures (Pasiphaë/Sado),” I trace such experimentation back to the late twentieth century, focusing on two other texts that explore similar strategies of literary experimentation and that present themselves as novels but, as Youn does with poetry, resist that classification at the same time. The experimental expansions of form in both Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s Dictee (1982) and Pamela Lu’s Pamela: A Novel …

Newport Papers

The subject of deterrence fell away from the forefront of American strategic thinking during the three decades following the fall of the Soviet Union. Our ability to deter much weaker states by denying them the ability to achieve their aims was long assumed. But today there is a new global security situation that makes it imperative for American military officers and security specialists to begin to relearn the fundamental tenets of this aspect of national security.

The purpose of this volume is to contribute to that campaign of learning by drawing on some of the excellent scholarship published in the …

Gangnam (Life)Style As A Global Culture : Consumption And Connections For Upward Mobility, Kyoung-Ho Shin

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This study examines the political economic and social contexts of lifestyle of cultural consumption in Gangnam area of Seoul, South Korea. By focusing on consumption in the Gangnam area, in which the glitz of successfully riding the wave of globalization has crystallized, this study discerns major cultural and spatial features of the city’s new global urbanism. Whereas the dominant narrative on global cities emphasizes the financial concomitants of globalization in relation to global cities, this study draws attention to cultural dimensions of the dynamics that are manifest in “lifestyle” to which many residents of this global city in East Asia …

Satellite Evidence Of Canopy-Height Dependence Of Forest Drought Resistance In Southwestern China, Peipei Xu, Wei Fang, Tao Zhou, Hu Li, Xiang Zhao, Spencer Berman, Ting Zhang, Chuixiang Yi

Publications and Research

The frequency and intensity of drought events are increasing with warming climate, which has resulted in worldwide forest mortality. Previous studies have reached a general consensus on the size-dependency of forest resistance to drought, but further understanding at a local scale remains ambiguous with conflicting evidence. In this study, we assessed the impact of canopy height on forest drought resistance in the broadleaf deciduous forest of southwestern China for the 2010 extreme drought event using linear regression and a random forest (RF) model. Drought condition was quantified with standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and drought resistance was measured with the …
