An Exploration Of Professional And Practice-Based Perspectives On Supporting Birth Parents Towards Reunification With Their Children., Susan O' Connor Funcheon, Eavan Brady
An Exploration Of Professional And Practice-Based Perspectives On Supporting Birth Parents Towards Reunification With Their Children., Susan O' Connor Funcheon, Eavan Brady
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Abstract
An exploration of professional and practice-based perspectives on supporting birth parents towards reunification with their children.
When children are placed in out-of-home care (e.g. foster care; hereafter ‘care’), it is the State’s duty to work with the children’s birth parents and ensure that systems and supports are in place to enable parents to resume caring for their children (i.e. for reunification to take place), when it is in the best interest of the child to do so. In Ireland, there is a dearth of data, research, policy and practice guidance regarding the process of reunification. There is also limited …

Confined In (Patri)Architecture: How Gothic And Horror Literature Exposes Ongoing Violence And Oppression Against Women, Clara A. Macilravie Cañas
Dissertations and Theses
This project focuses on the intersections of space, power, gender, religion, and the architecture of institutions that confine and repress women. I argue that these texts focus on how patriarchal and domestic ideologies lock women into gendered expectations through oppressive gender politics. Chapter one demonstrates how early gothic female writers used representations of physical structures, such as abbeys and castles, to expose the eighteenth-century woman’s experiences of abuse and confinement by repressive patriarchal and monarchal rule. This chapter connects themes and arguments within Sophia Lee’s The Recess (1783) and Ann Radcliffe’s A Sicilian Romance (1790) to reveal the metaphors that …

Effects Of A Falls Prevention Program For Individuals Post-Stroke In Guyana: An International Collaboration Protocol, Kelly Saroka, Megan Shaver, Mackenzie Schanzlin, Kristi Pearage
Student Research Poster Presentations 2022
Background. Falls related to stroke have a negative impact on physical mobility, overall health, quality of life, and fear of falls. In Guyana, falls are accepted as a normal part of life and there is little to no research on the impact of a falls prevention program on decreasing both falls and fear of falling in the post-stroke population in this country.
Objectives. This international collaboration protocol will determine the ability of a falls prevention program to decrease falls and fear of falling in individuals post-stroke in Guyana.
Design. This is a within subjects design, with exercises based on the …
Changing Faces And Persistent Patterns For Education In The New Latinx Diaspora, Edmund T. Hamann, Linda Harklau
Changing Faces And Persistent Patterns For Education In The New Latinx Diaspora, Edmund T. Hamann, Linda Harklau
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
The study of education in the New Latino/a/x1 Diaspora (NLD) was initiated in the 1990s with an understanding that education research from regions where the Latino/a/x presence is long-standing might not always fit well for places where Latino/a/x populations were newer and where histories of discrimination, political organizing, and resistance were much more limited. This chapter is the fourth in a series of "bigger picture" examinations of the status of education in the NLD over the past two decades (following Hamann, Wortham, and Murillo [2002] and Hamann and Harklau [2010, 2015]). Like previous iterations, this chapter points to gaps …
The Women’S Health And Cancer Rights Act (Whcra) And Breast Reconstruction Policy: An Evaluation Of Physician Attitudes And Perceptions, Christine Grogan
The Women’S Health And Cancer Rights Act (Whcra) And Breast Reconstruction Policy: An Evaluation Of Physician Attitudes And Perceptions, Christine Grogan
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Abstract In 2021, approximately 276,480 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, yet less than 30% were aware of their reconstruction options. The Women’s Healthcare Cancer Right Act (WHCRA) of 1998 stated those with breast cancer are entitled to breast reconstruction. WHCRA of 1998 set the first step in ensuring women get reconstruction if they chose. An exceptionally low percentage of women receive reconstruction after mastectomies each year, and the reasons are yet to be fully understood. Some initial thoughts are that women with breast cancer do not have or receive the information regarding their options to see a plastic surgeon. …
How Can Economic And Social Marginalization Explain Mexico’S Drug War Violence? An Assessment Of The Role That Poverty And Social Marginalization Plays In Explaining Variations In Homicide Rates., Diego Flores
Pitzer Senior Theses
The violence characterizing the Mexican drug war necessitates studies that seek to understand the causal mechanisms at play in prompting this violence. Given that ongoing violence, is inherently a multicausal phenomenon, this study seeks to understand the role that marginalization plays in the increase of violence, specifically homicide rates in 2010 at the municipality level. The relationship between the independent variable, marginalization indexes of all Mexican municipalities, is run in multiple least squares regression with the dependent variables homicide rates per 100,00 also at the municipality level. I hypothesize that an increase in the marginalization index will lead to an …
Implications For The Mainstreaming Of Fair Trade: Applying The Eras Of Fair Trade To The Product Life Cycle Theory, Kimberlee Josephson
Implications For The Mainstreaming Of Fair Trade: Applying The Eras Of Fair Trade To The Product Life Cycle Theory, Kimberlee Josephson
Pennsylvania Economic Review
By drawing attention to the notion of trade-based development, Fair Trade has contributed to the awareness of how market transactions can intersect with social issues. Fair Trade serves as an innovative supply chain that engages the world’s ‘poor’ in the trading system and it can be thought of as a development project that has evolved from a social movement to a social enterprise. The commercialization of activist efforts, however, faces the same pressures as the commercialization of any product and despite Fair Trade being founded for a purpose rather than a profit, this sector is embedded within market-based systems and …
Maternal Drivers Of Reproductive Output In The Lizard Family Scincidae: A Phylogenetic Comparative Approach, William Zang
Maternal Drivers Of Reproductive Output In The Lizard Family Scincidae: A Phylogenetic Comparative Approach, William Zang
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Scincidae is one of the most diverse families of squamates, comprising over 1,300 species of lizards with a variety of life history and ecological traits. This diversity includes three reproductive modes, where some species reproduce via oviparity (egg-laying), viviparity (live birth) or use of a mixed strategy (females switch modes). In this study, it was sought whether reproductive output differs between scincid species using these reproductive modes. Reproductive output is defined as the average product of offspring abundance and size per reproductive event, representing the reproductive effort of an individual. Additionally, the importance of phylogeny (evolutionary relatedness) and a suite …
Our Metropolitan Separations: The Case For Metropolitan Public Schools In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Marvin T. Chiles
Our Metropolitan Separations: The Case For Metropolitan Public Schools In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Marvin T. Chiles
History Faculty Publications
This research uses published reports from think tanks, statistical data from the Virginia Department of Education, newspaper articles, and court cases to argue for the creation of metropolitan school districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Framing this article's importance is the undeniable fact that almost seventy years after the famous Brown v. Board of Education decision (1954), American public schools still legally operate on a racially segregated basis. Virginia contributes to this issue by having some of the highest rates of racial segregation within its major metropolitan area school districts. This racial segregation has resulted in disparate educational outcomes between …

We Are Having This Conversation Now: The Times Of Aids Cultural Production (Introduction And Timeline 1), Alexandra Juhasz, Theodore Kerr
Publications and Research
This is a book about the history, present, and future of the cultural production of AIDS. It takes the form of thirteen short conversations between two AIDS activists, Alex and Ted, whom you will get to know more as you go along. The book focuses on what we call the Times of AIDS. All this talk is inspired by our longtime AIDS activism and is initiated by looking at related cultural production: objects like AIDS activist videos; events like protests; spaces like AIDS memorials; ideas we have learned from within and outside our community; and through our own memories and …

The Pandemic At Home: Learning From Community-Engaged Covid-19 Documentation Efforts In The Southeastern Us, Colin Post, Kassidy Hof-Mahoney
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Cultural heritage institutions of all kinds around the world responded to the Covid-19 pandemic by launching community-engaged collecting efforts that solicited the submission of documents capturing the daily experience of an historically significant phenomenon. While the pandemic is global in scale, these collecting efforts document the impact of Covid-19 at local or regional levels. This article reports on research to better understand how cultural heritage institutions in the Southeastern United States have developed community-engaged collecting projects. Analyzing data collected from the public websites of 30 institutions, as well as semi-structured interviews with 10 cultural heritage professionals active in the Covid-19 …

The African Continental Free Trade Area: Local Content Requirements As A Means To Addressing Africa's Productive Capacity Constraints, Nchimunya D. Ndulo
Michigan Journal of International Law
The Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents an unprecedented opportunity for African integration and is projected to spur unprecedented levels of job growth and productivity, and to drive sustainable economic development. However, as the implementation of the AfCFTA unfolds, it is apparent that certain bottlenecks stand in the way of the AfCFTA achieving its full potential. The bottleneck at the core of the AfCFTA’s effective implementation is the limited availability of tradable goods due to the limited productive capacity of many State Parties. This article argues that the implementation of local content requirements by State Parties, …

Physiognomic Artificial Intelligence, Luke Stark, Jevan Hutson
Physiognomic Artificial Intelligence, Luke Stark, Jevan Hutson
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
The reanimation of the pseudosciences of physiognomy and phrenology at scale through computer vision and machine learning is a matter of urgent concern. This Article—which contributes to critical data studies, consumer protection law, biometric privacy law, and antidiscrimination law—endeavors to conceptualize and problematize physiognomic artificial intelligence (“AI”) and offer policy recommendations for state and federal lawmakers to forestall its proliferation.
Physiognomic AI, as this Article contends, is the practice of using computer software and related systems to infer or create hierarchies of an individual’s body composition, protected class status, perceived character, capabilities, and future social outcomes based on their physical …

A Study Of The 2004 Indonesian Tsunami: The Effects On Gdp Growth And Tourism Post-Disaster, Vasudha Jalan
A Study Of The 2004 Indonesian Tsunami: The Effects On Gdp Growth And Tourism Post-Disaster, Vasudha Jalan
Scripps Senior Theses
The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami caused 225,000 deaths and economic damages of a little bit less than $10 billion. In this paper, I look at the differences in resilience between the countries affected by this natural disaster and those that were not. By adopting a difference-in-differences regression model and looking at GDP growth rates and the amount of international tourism before and after this disaster, I find that there were no effects on GDP growth rates, while international tourism increased post-disaster in countries affected by the earthquake. These results are interesting as previous literature finds negative impacts on GDP growth …
Analyzing College On-Campus Residency Agglomeration Benefits And Their Impact On Student Outcomes, Emily Pedace
Analyzing College On-Campus Residency Agglomeration Benefits And Their Impact On Student Outcomes, Emily Pedace
Scripps Senior Theses
Economies of agglomeration have been shown to increase productivity in part due to technological/ knowledge spillovers. I look at public colleges and universities in California and Texas to examine if students living on-campus can generate enough agglomeration to boost productivity in the students. I use a unique data set with information collected from Common Data Sets, self-reported by the schools. When using an OLS regression with the averages of these variables, higher averages of on-campus residence is correlated to higher average graduation and retention rates for Texas and California. When using a fixed effects panel regression, I find changes in …
The Economic And Social Decline Of Women's Colleges Across The United States, Alexandra Isabelle Rivasplata
The Economic And Social Decline Of Women's Colleges Across The United States, Alexandra Isabelle Rivasplata
Scripps Senior Theses
Women have been attending college at a greater rate than men for several decades. However, women’s colleges have been shutting down or transitioning to coeducation at incredibly high rates. Literature demonstrates the importance of women’s colleges due to their benefits on students’ future career success and psychological wellbeing. However, there is less research concerning the decline of women's colleges, and none regarding the economic and quantitative factors influencing their closures. Using a newly constructed, completely original data set, I perform a logistic regression and analyze variables related to the survival of women’s colleges. I find a high statistical significance of …

A Choice Based Art Classroom With The Application Of The Multiple Intelligence Theory And The Impact At The Elementary Level, Kelly Nyhammer
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review was guided by the research question, “How can the application of the multiple intelligence theory impact a choice based art classroom at the elementary level?” Data collected from this research found increased in student motivation and task engagement when choice and preferred learning styles are used in the classroom. Teacher structure of selection choice and aid in guiding students to build capacity for choice was suggested within younger students. The connection between providing students choice in the classroom and the incorporation of implementing the multiple intelligences has research backing proving that it promotes student engagement and reduces …

Within the spirit of conspiration, this article brings together contributions from participants of the PhD-led UCL Reading and React Group ‘Colonialism(s), Neoliberalism(s) and Language Teaching and Learning’, which ran in 2019/20. Weaving together various perspectives, the article centres on the dialogic nature of the decolonial enterprise and challenges the colonial concept of monologic authorial voice. Across the reflections on participants’ own engagements with questions of decolonising language teaching and learning, we pull together three threads: the inherent coloniality of the concepts that shape the very disciplines we seek to decolonise; the need to place decolonial efforts within broader contexts and …

Serving Through Transcribing: Preserving History While Building Community, Julie Centofanti, Mollie Hartup
Honors in Practice Online Archive
Community is a foundational element in honors education. During the global pandemic, students reimagined ways to connect in order to build community and serve one another. Authors describe a virtual collaboration in transcription, where honors students gathered to participate in digital transcribe-a-thons. These informal groupings evolved into a transcribing club that met three times a week (collectively logging more than 1,600 hours) and transcribed over 16,000 historical documents. A study of participating transcribers reveals enhanced historical knowledge, skill building, and opportunities for relationships with students of varying interests and backgrounds despite edicts for social distancing. While a common feature of …

Disorientations And Disruptions: Innovating First-Year Honors Education Through Collaborative Mapping Projects, Nathan W. Swanson
Honors in Practice Online Archive
A series of courses on the Evolution of Ideas introduces interdisciplinary study, develops collaborative discourse, and promotes a sense of community among first-year honors students. The curriculum encourages faculty to use a range of strategies to help students understand an idea and its history while also fostering awareness as to its social, political, economic, and broader contexts. Using the social history of maps as an example, the author demonstrates how disrupting students’ understanding of the map itself and, through creative group projects, disorienting emergent understanding of campus spaces, fosters a questioning atmosphere and makes room for growth. Through planned disorientation …
