Assessing The Prospects For Fair Housing, John Infranca
Assessing The Prospects For Fair Housing, John Infranca
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
This is a review of Furthering Fair Housing: Prospects for Racial Justice in America’s Neighborhoods, a 2021 collection of essays edited by Justin P. Steil, Nicholas F. Kelly, Lawrence J. Vale and Maia S. Woluchem. Furthering Fair Housing provides a detailed account of the long history leading to the 2015 affirmatively further fair housing rule, an evaluation of the short-lived rule’s effects and potential flaws, and a robust set of insights and recommendations for both federal officials revising the rule and local officials tasked with implementing it going forward. This review summarizes the volume’s individual chapters before discussing a few …
Aesthetic Encounters Beyond The Present: Historical Materialism And Sonic Pedagogies For Resisting Abstraction, Derek R. Ford
Aesthetic Encounters Beyond The Present: Historical Materialism And Sonic Pedagogies For Resisting Abstraction, Derek R. Ford
Education Studies Faculty publications
Basing ourselves on Marx’s method of historical materialism, this article builds on Marxist literature on capitalist abstraction and focuses on the struggle for differentialization. This amounts to a critique and, more importantly, an affirmation: elements of the future exist in the present. This is a future in which the force of capitalist abstraction is overcome through a new social order. This is not only a political struggle, but a pedagogical one as well in that it involves distinct educational logics with particular subjectivities, spatialities, and temporalities, which are elements of communism that exist in the present. The pedagogical gesture developed …

Background: In microbiome data analysis, unsupervised clustering is often used to identify naturally occurring clusters, which can then be assessed for associations with characteristics of interest. In this work, we systematically compared beta diversity and clustering methods commonly used in microbiome analyses. We applied these to four published datasets where highly distinct microbiome profiles could be seen between sample groups, as well a clinical dataset with less clear separation between groups.
Results: Although no single method outperformed the others consistently, we did identify the key scenarios where certain methods can underperform. Specifically, the Bray Curtis (BC) metric resulted in poor …

Reckoning With Induced Vehicle Travel, Jamey Volker
Reckoning With Induced Vehicle Travel, Jamey Volker
PSU Transportation Seminars
Empirical research shows that expanding roadway capacity induces more driving - the so-called "induced travel" phenomenon. However, environmental impact assessments and cost-benefit analyses of roadway capacity expansion projects have historically ignored, underestimated, or misestimated this induced travel effect. As a result, they frequently overestimate the projects' potential to relieve congestion and reduce air pollution. That spurred our team at the National Center for Sustainable Transportation (UC Davis) to develop an online tool to facilitate estimation of induced vehicle travel from capacity expansion projects. This presentation will explain the induced travel phenomenon, introduce our induced travel calculator and its offshoots, …
Land-Surface Parameters For Spatial Predictive Mapping And Modeling, Aaron E. Maxwell, Charles Shobe
Land-Surface Parameters For Spatial Predictive Mapping And Modeling, Aaron E. Maxwell, Charles Shobe
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Land-surface parameters derived from digital land surface models (DLSMs) (for example, slope, surface curvature, topographic position, topographic roughness, aspect, heat load index, and topographic moisture index) can serve as key predictor variables in a wide variety of mapping and modeling tasks relating to geomorphic processes, landform delineation, ecological and habitat characterization, and geohazard, soil, wetland, and general thematic mapping and modeling. However, selecting features from the large number of potential derivatives that may be predictive for a specific feature or process can be complicated, and existing literature may offer contradictory or incomplete guidance. The availability of multiple data sources and …

Hiding In Plain Sight: Black Panther, International Law And The “Development Frame”, Christopher Gevers
Hiding In Plain Sight: Black Panther, International Law And The “Development Frame”, Christopher Gevers
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article explores the “troubling antinomies” of the 2018 film Black Panther and its entanglements with the collective fantasies of the West—and those of international lawyers and development technocrats in particular—through its reliance on the “lost world” genre, as typified by H. Rider Haggard’s King Solomon’s Mines and John Buchan’s Prester John. The article then situates these troubling antinomies within the tradition of Black Internationalism and the novels of Pauline Hopkins, George S. Schuyler, and Peter Abrahams as practices of “poetic revolt.” Doing so, it is argued, reveals much about the conditions of possibility of the “development frame” and international …
Seeing Like A Clinic, Adrian A. Smith
Seeing Like A Clinic, Adrian A. Smith
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The prevailing commitment in clinical law programs like the Intensive Program in Poverty Law at Osgoode Hall Law School is to an engaged-contextualism, which serves to see law in action. It has provided participating students with some insight into the everyday life of ordinary people, approaching—but not necessarily fully perceptive to—certain socio-legal perspectives. But what does clinical legal education vision and envision? How precisely do clinics see? And from what source or place is that visual authority derived? Here, by attending to the prevailing “pedagogy of seeing” in contemporary poverty law clinical practice, I engage with teaching, learning, and praxis …

Picturing Pedagogy: Images, Teaching, And Development, Jeremy Baskin, Sundhya Pahuja
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Images are powerful. They shape how we see and understand the world and, in the process, challenge (or reinforce) our assumptions and perspectives. The images we use in the classroom are no exception, whether used passively as visual aids or as a “medium through which active learning is energized.”1 In this article we embrace the “pictorial turn” in university teaching and reflect on the use of images when teaching “development.”2 Development is an area that typically attracts students with an internationalist orientation and who seek to make a positive change in the world. Yet the concept of development is fraught …

A Classification System For Teachers’ Motivational Behaviours Recommended In Self-Determination Theory Interventions, Christina M. Frederick, Asghar Ahmadi, Michael Noetel, Philip Parker, Nikos Ntoumanis

Teachers’ behaviour is a key factor that influences students’ motivation. Many theoretical models have tried to explain this influence, with one of the most thoroughly researched being self-determination theory (SDT). We used a Delphi method to create a classification of teacher behaviours consistent with SDT. This is useful because SDT-based interventions have been widely used to improve educational outcomes. However, these interventions contain many components. Reliably classifying and labelling those components is essential for implementation, reproducibility, and evidence synthesis. We used an international expert panel (N = 34) to develop this classification system. We started by identifying behaviours from …

Charcoal Value Chain As A Complimentary Livelihood Activity For Pastoralists In The Rangelands, S. Teyie, Oliver Vivian Wasonga, C. Bergmann, M. Petersen
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Global charcoal production has more than tripled over the past 50 years from 17.3 million tons in 1964 to 53.1 million tons in 2014. 61% of the present global charcoal production occurs in Africa, mostly to satisfy demand for cooking fuel from urban and peri-urban households. Despite the adverse environmental impacts associated with charcoal production, a significant global population relies on it for energy needs, while many producers depend on it as a livelihood source. Whereas this calls for efforts to promote sustainable charcoal production practices, this has to be informed by in-depth understanding of the charcoal value chain to …

Limited research attention has focused on homicides involving foreign-born victims. Using data from the National Violent Death Reporting System, we examined 9428 homicides that occurred in 2017 in the United States across 32 states and D.C. Approximately 8% of homicide victims were foreign-born. Homicide victimization rates were substantially lower for foreign-born persons, compared to U.S.-born persons. However, foreign-born persons from Honduras, El Salvador, and Jamaica had a substantially higher risk of homicide victimization. Notably, few homicides involving foreign-born victims were gang- or drug-trade-related. With the growing number of immigrants in the United States, policy and prevention efforts should be guided …

Optimization Of Silicon Nitride Waveguide Platform For On-Chip Virus Detection, Raghi S. El El Shamy, Mohamed A. Swillam, Xun Li
Faculty Journal Articles
This work presents a rigorous and generic sensitivity analysis of silicon nitride on silicon dioxide strip waveguide for virus detection. In general, by functionalizing the waveguide surface with a specific antibodies layer, we make the optical sensor sensitive only to a particular virus. Unlike conventional virus detection methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), integrated refractive index (RI) optical sensors offer cheap and mass-scale fabrication of compact devices for fast and straightforward detection with high sensitivity and selectivity. Our numerical analysis includes a wide range of wavelengths from visible to mid-infrared. We determined the strip waveguide’s single-mode dimensions and the …

We implemented stable isotope analysis to evaluate the molt behavior of the Colima warbler (Leiothlypis crissalis), an understudied migratory songbird occurring in Mexico and recently discovered breeding in the southern part of Texas, USA. We built a geostatistical model showing variation in deuterium precipitation values (d2Hp) across a latitudinal gradient within the Colima warbler breeding range in northeastern Mexico. Then, based on stable isotope ratios of deuterium in feathers (d2Hf), we assigned wintering Colima warblers captured in Central Mexico to possible molting areas near the southwestern portion of the species' breeding range. To the best of our knowledge, this is …

A Study Of The Relative Contribution Of Selected Sociocultural And Personality Variables To The Exploration Of Prejudice And Discrimination In South Dakota, Dan Peterson
Great Plains Sociologist
An extensive amount of scholarly research has been done on the subjects of prejudice and discrimination. The vast majority of this research in the United States has focused on Blacks and Jews and very little on the American Indian. The general public had very little knowledge of the situation on Indian reservations or the relationship that existed between the Indians and Whites until the early 1970s when American Indian activists began to engage in protests. That emerged from these protests were images of white racism and bigotry, separatist movements and a general climate of hostility in those areas where protests …

Valued Waste/Wasted Value: Waste, Value And The Labour Process In Electronic Waste Recycling In Singapore And Malaysia, Aidan Marc Wong
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper focuses on value creation in electronic waste, and supports the argument (c.f. Herod et al., 2014) that 'waste' embodies congealed labour - the product of the labour process. This analysis of itinerant rag-and-bone collectors demonstrates that value creation by informal labour accrues as congealed labour in recycled e-waste through the agentic acts of collecting, salvaging and extracting. This paper highlights the central role of informal labour in this labour process and pushes further the conceptualisation of 'wasted labour' (McGrath-Champ et al., 2015) by calling for greater attention to the agentic nature of labour in value creation, rather than …

Cle Working Paper No. 1/2022--How Law Shapes Food Sovereignty In Urban Canada, Julia Witmer
Centre for Law and the Environment
Inspired by the right to the city, this paper outlines the legal architecture of food sovereignty activities in urban Canada. The architecture is rooted in three fields of law: constitutional law, municipal and planning law, and health law, and explored through various case studies in urban centers. The paper reviews legal instruments in each field and analyzes how they shape different food sovereignty activities in supportive and restrictive ways. Constitutional law generally proves restrictive in its limited recognition of local government as true government, restricted provincial power in agricultural regulation, and its general treatment of food as a commodity. Municipal …

Allometric equations for calculation of tree above-ground biomass (AGB) form the basis for estimates of forest carbon storage and exchange with the atmosphere. While standard models exist to calculate forest biomass across the tropics, we lack a standardized tool for computing AGB across boreal and temperate regions that comprise the global extratropics. Here we present an integrated R package, allodb, containing systematically selected published allometric equations and proposed functions to compute AGB. The data component of the package is based on 701 woody species identified at 24 large Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO) forest dynamics plots representing a wide diversity …

Motor Vehicle Service Delivery: Analysis Of Idaho's Model And Policy Alternatives, Gabe Osterhout, Matthew May, Emily Pape, Cheong Kim, Vanessa Fry
Idaho Policy Institute Reports
This report analyzes Idaho’s DMV service delivery model, compares it to DMV arrangements in other states, and considers potential policy alternatives by conducting surveys of front-line agents in Idaho and DMV administrators in other states, as well as interviews of officials in counties and other states. The report discusses the benefits and challenges of Idaho’s arrangement and other service delivery models. The state’s current arrangement enables local access, flexibility, and autonomy, but it also leads to a lack of standardization, blurred responsibilities between state and county decision makers, funding challenges, and unnecessary layers in delivering DMV services. Each service delivery …

Transformative Vocabulary: Fusing Vocabulary Instruction With Citizenship Education, Thomas Broderick
Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Literacy
This action research sought ways to maximize secondary social studies teachers’ instructional time and merge their core functions as literacy, content and social-justice instructors. Drawing on a wide literature demonstrating potent correlation between requisite vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, this action research investigated the potential interface between explicit literacy instruction, particularly robust vocabulary instruction, and democratic citizenship, while keeping in mind the intent of the Common Core Standards. In other words: is it possible to fuse robust vocabulary instruction to achieve transformative citizenship? Data collection included multiple in-person and digital interviews with veteran K-12 teachers, administrators and university professors about …
