Aspen Bibliography
Societal Impact Statement
Syntheses clearly show that global warming is affecting ecosystems and biodiversity around the world. New methods and measures are needed to predict the climate resilience of plant species critical to ecosystem stability, to improve ecological management and to support habitat restoration and human well-being. Widespread keystone species such as aspen are important targets in the study of resilience to future climate conditions because they play a crucial role in maintaining various ecosystem functions and may contain genetic material with untapped adaptive potential. Here, we present a new framework in support of climate-resilient revegetation based on comprehensively understood …

Environmental Impacts Of Lead Food Contamination Caused By The Shadow Economy (Kiosks) In Al-Rusafa Center For The Year 2021, Hanan Noman And Seen The Village Lucy
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Due to the economic crises that Iraq went through through the economic blockade and the subsequent US occupation in 2003, which left an imprint on the lives of low-income individuals, it was negatively reflected in the displacement of the southern governorates towards the capital, Baghdad, in search of job opportunities to meet the requirements of life. Due to the limited income of individuals and the high rates of unemployment, the so-called “shadow economy” or “hidden economy” has spread in the city of Baghdad, especially in the center of Rusafa, which is the investment of the surrounding environment with the simplest …

The Geostrategic Importance Of The South China Sea And Its Impact On The Sino-American Competition, Hamida Abdul Hussein Mohammed Al-Zalami
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The South China Sea is one of the seas of great importance at the present time and this importance comes from its geostrategic location and the nature of the islands it contains, as whoever has the ability to control them can control the ships entering and leaving it, besides, the natural resources it contains, especially oil, have begun Natural gas arouses the appetite of countries bordering on it, especially China, which is witnessing great economic growth in the region and in light of its increasing need for energy sources. The aforementioned facts have stimulated intense competition in all fields between …

This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time …
Watercolor Of Surface Water Reservoirs In West Java, Indonesia Using Satellite Remote Sensing Data, Cavien Izack Marcelyno Satia
Watercolor Of Surface Water Reservoirs In West Java, Indonesia Using Satellite Remote Sensing Data, Cavien Izack Marcelyno Satia
Theses and Dissertations
Freshwater sources such as lakes, rivers, and reservoirs are essential part of water supply for irrigation, recreation, and most importantly, public and domestic water usage globally. Compared to groundwater that require costly facilities and infrastructure, freshwater source from reservoir can be treated efficiently and effectively to quickly meet public demand. In Indonesia, particularly, in the island of Java, there is a scarcity of freshwater source. There is less than 5% of available freshwater, which creates multiple water management issues such as water depletion during extensive pumping and dry period, and pollution of water due to high nutrient and wastewater input …

New York Clearing House Association: Overview, Sean Fulmer
New York Clearing House Association: Overview, Sean Fulmer
Journal of Financial Crises
Between the creation of nationally chartered banks in 1863 and the launch of the Federal Reserve System in 1914, an organization of most New York City banks—originally formed to simplify settling clearing balances—joined together during banking panics to reallocate liquidity and restore market confidence. In the absence of a central bank, this organization, the New York Clearing House Association (NYCH), issued clearinghouse loan certificates (CLCs) that association members could use as temporary cash substitutes for settling clearing balances between banks. CLCs allowed borrowing banks to maintain their cash reserves without costly asset liquidations. The NYCH used CLCs in six crises …

Dividends And Bank Capital In The Global Financial Crisis Of 2007–2009, Viral V. Acharya, Irvind Gujral, Nirupama Kulkarni, Hyun Song Shin
Journal of Financial Crises
The headline numbers appear to show that even as banks and financial intermediaries suffered large credit losses in the Global Financial Crisis of 2007–2009, they raised substantial amounts of new capital, both from private investors and from government-funded capital injections. However, on closer inspection, the composition of bank capital shifted radically from one based on common equity to that based on debt-like hybrid claims such as preferred equity and subordinated debt. The erosion of common equity was exacerbated by large-scale payments of dividends, in spite of widely anticipated credit losses. Dividend payments represent a transfer from creditors (and potentially taxpayers) …

No Magic Number—Predreadnought Fleet Architecture In The U.S. Navy, 1902–1905, John T. Kuehn
Naval War College Review
What does the nation want the Navy to do? How does one go about ensuring that the fleet has the capabilities and force structure it needs? Examining the challenge Navy leaders faced over a hundred years ago regarding the scale and rate of technological change can help us understand the past better as it relates to the maritime security of the United States today.

Countering China’S “Trident” Strategy—Frustrating China’S Aims In The East And South China Seas And The Indian Ocean, Kohji Kuhara
Naval War College Review
China is trying to construct a naval strategy to deny U.S. forces freedom of action in the western Pacific Ocean. Looking back to the U.S. Navy’s last major strategic contest, against the Soviet navy during the Cold War, provides comparisons between Soviet and Chinese strategies that yield insights and analogies that can help develop more effective countermeasures against undesirable Chinese initiatives.
Gis Automated Delineation And Analysis Of Cancer Service Areas In The United States, Changzhen Wang
Gis Automated Delineation And Analysis Of Cancer Service Areas In The United States, Changzhen Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Delineating a meaningful and reliable geographic unit pertaining to cancer care is essential in examining geographic variations in cancer care for better analysis, management, and planning. Public health researchers have devoted great efforts to defining various service areas, which; however, lack scientific rigor or are unrepresentative of the highly specialized cancer care markets, and their methods have become obsolete in the era of big data and high geo-computation. This study develops the “Spatially Constrained Leiden (ScLeiden)” method, a network community detection algorithm in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and applies it to delineate a series of coherent cancer service …

Beyond Inclusion: Explaining China's Rejection On The Indo-Pacific Regional Construct, Arrizal Anugerah Jaknanihan
Beyond Inclusion: Explaining China's Rejection On The Indo-Pacific Regional Construct, Arrizal Anugerah Jaknanihan
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
The concept of “Indo-Pacific” has been increasingly adopted in foreign policies during the past few years. Despite its multifaceted nature, China has consistently rejected the use of the Indo-Pacific concept in its official policy. Beijing’s attitude was reflected in Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s remarks that dismissed the Indo-Pacific as a “come-back of Cold War mentality” and “retrogression of history.” This study explains why China renounced the Indo-Pacific concept despite the increasing inclusion in defining the region. By employing realist constructivism theory, this paper finds that the prevalence of containment and anti-China narrative engenders Beijing’s threat perception to the concept. …

A Systems Approach To Mapping Uk Regional Innovation Ecosystems For Policy Insight, Dan Arthur, Jonathan Moizer, Jonathan Lean
A Systems Approach To Mapping Uk Regional Innovation Ecosystems For Policy Insight, Dan Arthur, Jonathan Moizer, Jonathan Lean
Plymouth Business School
The literature on innovation and regional economic development shows widespread references to ‘systems’ but relatively little application of systems thinking and problem structuring methods. Innovation models are thus under-theorised with operationally-based maps that link the structure of innovation systems to behaviour and possible policy levers. This conceptual paper addresses this shortfall by applying a systems mapping approach to regional innovation ecosystems which sets out the structural drivers and actor inter-relationships in regional economies with universities acting as focal points for knowledge application. A causal feedback map is hypothesised from participative research and the innovation literature, providing an integrative framework and …
