Methods For Drone Trajectory Analysis Of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Jillian D. Bliss

Theses and Dissertations

With the increase in the use of UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) for marine mammal research, there is a need for the development of methods of analysis to transform UAS high resolution video into quantitative data. This study sought to develop a preliminary method of analysis that would quantify and present a way to visualize the dynamics and relative spatial distribution and changes in distribution of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the waters of Turneffe Atoll, Belize. This approach employs a previously developed video tracking program ‘Keypoint Tracking’ that enables manual tracking of individual dolphins and the creation of …

Correlation Of Road Network Structure And Urban Mobility Intensity: An Exploratory Study Using Geo-Tagged Tweets, Li Geng, Ke Zhang Dec 2022

Correlation Of Road Network Structure And Urban Mobility Intensity: An Exploratory Study Using Geo-Tagged Tweets, Li Geng, Ke Zhang

Publications and Research

Urban planners have been long interested in understanding how urban structure and activities are mutually influenced. Human mobility and economic activities naturally drive the formation of road network structure and the accessibility of the latter shapes the patterns of movement flow across urban space. In this paper, we perform an exploratory study on the relationship between the street network structure and the intensity of human movement in urban areas. We focus on two cities and we utilize a dataset of geo-tagged tweets that can form a proxy to urban mobility and the corresponding street networks as obtained from OpenStreetMap. We …

What Makes Classroom Observation Feedback Useful? The Perceptions Of Secondary Math And English Teachers, Amanda Frasier Dec 2022

What Makes Classroom Observation Feedback Useful? The Perceptions Of Secondary Math And English Teachers, Amanda Frasier

ETSU Faculty Works

Teachers (n=14) at four high schools in North Carolina were interviewed about their perspectives of evaluation policy at two time points during the 2016-2017 school year. This study specifically examined statements teachers made about feedback from observations using de-identified interview transcripts. Teachers discussed feedback from formal observations along with other sources of informal observational feedback (e.g., coaches, peers). Overall, teachers described useful feedback as that which provided actionable recommendations informed by the observer’s knowledge of three domains: the classroom context (as aided by the frequency and timing of observations), subject area, and pedagogy. Teachers also identified two aspects of formal …

Making Group Work Work: Constructing Groups And Assignments Based Around Relevant Assessments To Increase Student Success, James Altman Dec 2022

Making Group Work Work: Constructing Groups And Assignments Based Around Relevant Assessments To Increase Student Success, James Altman

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Helping college students get the most out of their talents, is challenging even without the ongoing uncertainty of the post-Pandemic landscape. Shyness, lack of comfort with the subject matter, and fear of having their ideas dismissed, can all keep students from expressing their ideas as fully as they, and we, would like. This can lead to non-completion or plagiarism of assignments. In group settings, it can lead to one student “taking over” the project, or the rest of the group “pushing it off” on one member. Constructing groups and/or assignments based around relevant assessments, namely Myers-Briggs and “The Six Working …

Elements Of Fantasy In The Presentation Of Environmental Problems In Prapt’S Nirat Mahannop, Saifon Sianglee, Sirichaya Corngreat

Journal of Letters

This research examines the character “Moen” from Prapt’s detective novel “Nirat Mahannop” with reference to the concept of ecological conscience. Results show that Prapt deploys elements of fantasy to express Moen’s supernatural appearance and vocal power. This positions Moen as a voice on Thailand’s environmental problems from 2013 to 2015, relating to the oil spill that affected the country’s marine environment. Apart from that, Moen reflects powerful relationships between humans and the environment, capitalism and nature, in conjunction with the image of humans as an environmental threat.

This article explores English-to-Thai translations of conceptual metaphors in skincare advertisements on websites. Through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 120 skincare advertisements and their translations from eight brands collected from their official websites between 2019 and 2021, this study reveals the ten most common conceptual metaphors in skincare advertisements: war metaphors, health metaphors, human-being metaphors, plant and cultivation metaphors, light metaphors, textile and clothing metaphors, machine metaphors, food and nutrition metaphors, cleaning action metaphors, and container metaphors. The most frequent translation strategy found is retention of the source-text conceptual metaphor. Interestingly, addition of a new metaphor into the target …

“Superior Honor And Dignity” : A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Relationship Between Linguistic Strategies And Ideologies In The Automobile Business, Siravast Kavilanan Dec 2022

“Superior Honor And Dignity” : A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Relationship Between Linguistic Strategies And Ideologies In The Automobile Business, Siravast Kavilanan

Journal of Letters

This article examines the relationship between linguistic strategies and ideologies of superior honor and dignity in the automobile business. These relationships are identified using critical discourse analysis based on the three-dimensional framework of Fairclough (1995). Results show that the linguistic strategies used to construct these ideologies include lexical selection, presupposition, negation, claiming and reference. This discourse also indicates that while consumers may recognize the importance of cars, as an automobile business, profits are also important. As a result, automobile companies have constructed discourses to manipulate people to recognize that cars are not just vehicles, but indicators of social status that …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

World Health Organization (WHO) grade 4 gliomas of the cerebellum are rare entities whose understanding trails that of their supratentorial counterparts. Like supratentorial high-grade gliomas (sHGG), cerebellar high-grade gliomas (cHGG) preferentially affect males and prognosis is bleak; however, they are more common in a younger population. While current therapy for cerebellar and supratentorial HGG is the same, recent molecular analyses have identified features and subclasses of cerebellar tumors that may merit individualized targeting. One recent series of cHGG included the subclasses of (1) high-grade astrocytoma with piloid features (HGAP, ~31% of tumors); (2) H3K27M diffuse midline glioma (~8%); and (3) …

Ai In The Hands Of Imperfect Users, Kristin M Kostick-Quenet, Sara Gerke

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

As the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) continues to expand in healthcare, much attention has been given to mitigating bias in algorithms to ensure they are employed fairly and transparently. Less attention has fallen to addressing potential bias among AI/ML's human users or factors that influence user reliance. We argue for a systematic approach to identifying the existence and impacts of user biases while using AI/ML tools and call for the development of embedded interface design features, drawing on insights from decision science and behavioral economics, to nudge users towards more critical and reflective decision making using …

Listen To The Voices Of The Women, Judith Mirkinson Dec 2022

Listen To The Voices Of The Women, Judith Mirkinson

Journal of International Women's Studies

Using survivor testimonies, military records and statements from human rights organizations, this paper lays out the undeniable truth of the “comfort women” system. This truth is recognized by the international community and maintains that the Japanese government and Japanese Imperial Army instituted and maintained the largest system of sexual slavery in the 20th century. These testimonies provide the factual counterpoint to the historical denialism of Harvard Professor J. Mark Ramseyer as well as the Japanese government. The “comfort women” survivors’ experiences, since breaking a 40-year silence in the 1990s, manifest a resilience and sense of purpose in demanding an accounting …

Ramseyer, The Japanese Right-Wing And The “History Wars”, Tomomi Yamaguchi

Journal of International Women's Studies

J. Mark Ramseyer’s publications on the topics of wartime “comfort women” and Japan’s minorities have become the focus of intense controversy. His article on “comfort women” in the International Review of Law and Economics gained global scrutiny following its coverage in Japan’s right-wing newspaper, Sankei Shimbun, and its English-language publication, Japan Forward. Ramseyer claims that “comfort women” willingly entered into sex-work contracts, denying responsibility by Japan’s military and government for the “comfort station” system. He also insists that naming this system “sexual slavery” is “pure fiction” – a stance shared by Japanese history denialists in Japan. Since the controversy over …

My Response To Ramseyer’S Effort To Deny The History Of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, Pyong Gap Min

Journal of International Women's Studies

The main objective of this paper is to critically evaluate as many of Ramseyer’s arguments as possible included in his 2022 paper. It consists of three sections in addition to the introduction and concluding remarks. The first section summarizes the expanded literature that interpreted the “comfort women” system as sexual slavery, judgments, and recommendations to the Japanese government given by scholars, international human rights organizations and the legislative branches of four Western countries. Since Ramseyer published his article denying the “comfort women” system as sexual slavery without introducing this literature, we cannot consider his article as an academic work. The …

Short Song Lyrics (Xiaoling) In The Song Dynasty : "I Ask You, How Much Sorrow Can There Be?” : Later Literati Song Lyrics, Maija Samei

How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast

This episode discusses how the genre begins to broaden thematically in the work of somewhat later literati poets who continued to write in the short xiaoling form. Poems by the Last Emperor of the Southern Tang, Li Yu, and by Northern Song statesman Yan Shu demonstrate how the genre begins to take on themes like nostalgia and friendship.

Financing Benefits And Barriers To Routine Hiv Screening In Clinical Settings In The United States: A Scoping Review, Hani Serag, Isabel Clark, Cherith Naig, David Lakey, Yordanos M. Tiruneh

School of Medicine Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone between 13--64 years be tested for HIV at least once as a routine procedure. Routine HIV screening is reimbursable by Medicare, Medicaid, expanded Medicaid, and most commercial insurance plans. Yet, scaling-up HIV routine screening remains a challenge. We conducted a scoping review for studies on financial benefits and barriers associated with HIV screening in clinical settings in the U.S. to inform an evidence-based strategy to scale-up routine HIV screening. We searched Ovid MEDLINE®, Cochrane, and Scopus for studies published between 2006-2020 in English. The search identified 383 Citations; we screened 220 …

Modified Ube3a Gene For A Gene Therapy Approach For Angelman Syndrome, Kevin Ron Nash, Edwin John Weeber, Jennifer Leigh Daily

USF Patents

Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a genetic disorder occurring in approximately one in every 15,000 births. It is characterized by severe mental retardation, seizures, difficulty speaking and ataxia. The gene responsible for AS was discovered to be UBE3A and encodes for E6-AP, an ubiquitin ligase. A unique feature of this gene is that it undergoes maternal imprinting in a neuron-specific manner. In the majority of AS cases, there is a mutation or deletion in the maternally inherited UBE3A gene, although other cases are the result of uniparental disomy or mismethylation of the maternal gene. While most human disorders characterized by severe …

Curiosities Of Street Literature, A Critical Edition, Lauren Maynes, Sydnie Poulsen, Drew Rigby, Sarah Schulzke, Zerin Wetzel, Emi Yamazaki

Student Works

Curiosities of Street Literature, compiled and edited by Charles Hindley, Sr. and published by Reeves and Turner in 1871, is a curiosity in every sense of the word. The volume contains over 200 Victorian broadsides (primarily ballads) reprinted from the cheap Seven Dials versions that flooded the streets of Great Britain before the advent of steam printing. Sold for a penny (or less) by “patterers” who sang the ballads to popular tunes to attract their typically working-class customers, these pieces of ephemera were never meant to be saved or remediated in book format. Street ballads appeared quickly and disappeared …
