#Includetheirstories: Rethinking, Reimagining, And Reshaping Legal Education, Leslie P. Culver, Elizabeth A. Kronk Warner
Utah Law Review
This symposium gathered scholars and practitioners who have been deeply engaged in the work to examine historical roots of the legal profession and discuss best practices for exploring ethnic, gender, and related inequities alongside our law students. It is well established that the legal profession and legal education neither reflect the community they serve nor swiftly respond to the social shifts within the broader society.3 As 2020 grossly revealed, ethnic partiality and division are aches we have yet to really confront and bear. For example, the casebook method format of legal education continues to model Christopher Langdell’s Gilded Age curriculum, …

Total Wellness Of Turkish International Students: Perceptions And Inherent Growth Tendencies, Mehmet Avci, Romulo E. Montilla
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Research on the international students primarily focuses on adjustment and acculturation issues rather than building and maintaining the wellness of specific cultural groups of international students. This study used basic psychological needs involved in self-determination theory to investigate the relationship between autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs, self-determined way of functioning, and wellness of Turkish international students in the U.S. Data was collected before Covid-19 pandemic using a self-administered survey from 179 (71 females) Turkish international students with a mean age of 29.7 years. The results indicated that the perceived total wellness of Turkish international students was slightly low. The results …
Petroleum, Health, And Power: The Anglo-Persian Oil Company And The Colonial Dimensions Of Company Medicine In Iran, 1902–1931, Arman Azimi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
“Petroleum, Health, and Power: The Anglo-Persian Oil Company and the Colonial Dimensions of Company Medicine in Iran, 1902-1931” investigates the medical and public health work of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC, later Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), and today BP P.L.C., or British Petroleum) in southwest Iran in the period prior to the Iranian central government’s assumption of control over public health in the region. To ensure that its operations functioned without disruption, the British-owned oil company constructed an extensive and integrated medical infrastructure and carried out substantial public health programs. Based on archival material from the BP Archive and the …

Literaturas En Exhibición: Autores-Show Y Posturas Precarias En El Siglo Xxi Hispanoamericano Neoliberal, Sara Cordon Hornillos
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The consolidation of neoliberalism, the demands of the market, the importance of the image, the possibilities offered by social media, and the ways celebrity is constructed not only favor but also demand the exhibition of the artist.
This dissertation examines for the first time how twenty-first-century Latin American and Spanish authors with sexual, ethnic, gender, or class identities traditionally excluded from the realm of literary distinction employ self-exhibition to engage with the public, thus redrawing the limits of literature. Reflecting critically on the commodification and manipulation of the contemporary authorial figure, as well as the possibilities of agency that certain …

#Includetheirstories: Rethinking, Reimagining, And Reshaping Legal Education, Leslie Culver, Elizabeth A. Kronk Warner
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
The entire world was shaken by the events of 2020—a year that the historians will pen with infamy. Along with a global health pandemic that tested both human frailties and social infrastructures, the world witnessed the devastation of George Floyd, an African American man, dying under the knee of Derek Chauvin, a White male police officer. The nation erupted. As 2020 ended, many organizations and institutions clamored both to process ethnic divides and injustices, and to gain tools and skills to create meaningful change and lasting impact. Legal education was one such institution. During the summer and fall of 2020, …

“The People Are Tired, And Just Want To Have Fun”: Mahraganat Music And The Struggle For Sonic Presence In Post-2013 Egypt, Mohammed Elfeky
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Building upon Asef Bayat’s notion of the “unintelligibility” of Egypt’s subaltern politics, this thesis investigates how mahraganat music is rendered “unintelligible/nonsense” by influential Egyptian cultural figures and is targeted for censorship. Mahraganat is a musical artform that arose from the lower-working classes neighborhoods in Egypt to become a dominant genre in the country. In 2020, the Egyptian Musicians Syndicate, headed by Hany Shakir, banned mahraganat artists from performing officially in Egypt. Before and after the ban, state media debated the genre's status; its detractors framed the music as nonsensical, “absurd”, “meaningless”, “vulgar”, and a “low-brow” dilution of Egyptian cultural production …
Carceral Calisthenics: Physical Culture In The Hood, Albert L. De La Tierra
Carceral Calisthenics: Physical Culture In The Hood, Albert L. De La Tierra
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
How do racialized men who reside in structurally marginalized locales that are putatively regarded as “the hood” navigate and manage their social conditions? This dissertation sheds light on this question by treating “street workout,” a physical culture centered around calisthenics exercises performed in public space, as an empirical site for generating a situated understanding of how some Black men assert themselves in social space at the same time that they are asserted upon by social forces. Taking an ethico-onto-epistem-ological stance that refuses the colonial gaze (a ubiquitously employed optic that dehumanizes racialized people), this dissertation asks: (1) What embodied practices …

White Blinders: A Study Of Race Relations Theory In Britain, 1948–1988, Matthew T. Sherman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation studies the early generation of scholars who developed the academic field of race relations in Britain from the 1940s into the 1980s. The research and methodology performed throughout this period was both innovative and problematic due to the approaches taken. Early scholars, such as Kenneth L. Little, Michael Banton, Sheila Patterson, and John Rex, provided the dominant schools of thought in the study of race relations in Britain up to the early 1970s. This dissertation studies the origins and development of an interdisciplinary field of study within the context of a nation and society coming to grips with …
The Storytelling Cure: Medicine And Narrative From Galen To Shahrazad And Rousseau, Ryan A. Milov-Cordoba
The Storytelling Cure: Medicine And Narrative From Galen To Shahrazad And Rousseau, Ryan A. Milov-Cordoba
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Are stories healing? This dissertation introduces and explores an idea that I call “the storytelling cure.” With this term I capture a set of related notions about the healing power of stories that span literary studies, intellectual history, philosophy, and medical practice. Through a comparative study I make the case for “the storytelling cure” as a cross-cultural, multiconfessional, and multilingual phenomenon of great age, complexity, and power, worthy of the most sustained attention by the contemporary field of Comparative Literature. Concretely, this dissertation presents three extended case studies of “storytelling cures” from three different kinds of texts (case history, frame …
Globalism And Identity In Taiwanese Contemporary Art, 1978–2009, Chu-Chiun Wei
Globalism And Identity In Taiwanese Contemporary Art, 1978–2009, Chu-Chiun Wei
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Taiwanese contemporary art emerged in the 1980s and rapidly flourished in the 1990s, nourished by the process of democratization and the construction of Taiwanese consciousness prompted by the lifting of martial law in 1987. This dissertation makes two claims. Firstly, that Taiwanese contemporary art after 2000 can be understood as “post-national,” due to the country’s marginal position in the world and contentious status as a nation-state. Secondly, that Taiwanese post-national art differentiates itself from postcolonial/post-martial law art of the late 1980s and 1990s on the basis of its globalism. The three artists surveyed by the dissertation each exemplify different …

Cooking activities in the traditional kitchen or in the domestic area—which are supposed to be the domain of women—are interpreted as an obligation as well as a form of a woman’s service to her family, spouse, children, and even other people who are close to her life. In other words, cooking in the domestic area is an undefined job. Regardless of the fact, when cooking shifted to the public space, it turned into a professional job, a work area which was later known as the professional kitchen. People who work in a professional kitchen are given the title professional chef. …

Through The Back Door: Unsettling And Witnessing The Transgenerational Trauma Paradigm With African American Women, Asia Tonja Marie Amos
Through The Back Door: Unsettling And Witnessing The Transgenerational Trauma Paradigm With African American Women, Asia Tonja Marie Amos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this study was to disrupt and challenge how research and representation of transgenerational trauma in the field of psychology perpetuates the elision and erasure of African American women's experiences. In social sciences and the medical field, African American women are often described within trauma studies as either silent sufferers of substance abuse and interpersonal violence or perpetrators of lateral violence, child abuse/neglect, etc., which dislocates their personhood and complex nuances of their experiences (e.g. Broussard, 2013; Ponton III, 2018; Ricks, 2018). This study critiques, decolonizes, and de-pathologizes transgenerational trauma transmission (TTT) by using Black feminist intersectional and …
From Langston Hughes To Black Studies: Higher Education Through The Lens Of Black Poets, Justin R. Williams
From Langston Hughes To Black Studies: Higher Education Through The Lens Of Black Poets, Justin R. Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This project attempts to bridge two strands of literary studies not typically in conversation with one another. On one hand, literary disciplinary histories have tended to focus on novels as a primary source material for telling a story about higher education but have dismissed the utility of poetry for institutional critique. On the other hand, scholars of African American literature have long recognized Black Arts Movement poets’ centrality to the formation of black institutions and their impact on African American literary criticism but have been less interested in exploring disciplinary concerns prior to the formation of Black Studies. This dissertation …

Benetton’S (In)Equality: A Semiotic Reading, Hianly Muljadi, Sonny Angjaya, Joanna Deborah
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
United Colors of Benetton, or UCB, has been using its advertisements to deliver positive messages and values that the clothing company represents. This article analyzes one of the photographs in Benetton’s campaign for their Spring Summer Collection of 2018. The campaign, which consists of some photographs by Oliviero Toscani, raises the theme of equality of gender and ethnicity. It shows various photographs of both female and male models from different ethnicities. However, it is found that there is one photograph that shows inconsistency with the very value that Benetton wants to convey through their campaign. Based on the semiotic analysis, …

Home is an integral element of the Pakistani family system, and the idea of home is deeply embedded in Pakistani women’s consciousness. The prime objective of this study is to explore the socio-cultural factors responsible for women’s homelessness. This study highlights various determinants that lead women to leave their homes. The issue of women fleeing from their homes is a matter of disregard in Pakistan’s culture, such an action is considered as an issue of family’s self-image, respect, and honour. Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis is an oral history related to Prince Edward County’s infamous school closures from 1959-1964. It tracks the popular memory of the closures through the narrative of two natives of Farmville, Virginia: a mother and son. This thesis investigates the role of physical monuments in the development of historical consciousness related to the school closures, as well as the intergenerational effects of the closures on the son. This thesis marks that there were radial effects from the school closures that manifested within the subsequent generation, and that for this particular case study, awareness of the closures and their effects …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This study explored the commodification of polygamy in the Air Mata Surga (AMS) movie, adapted from the Air Mata Tuhan novel. The movie was selected for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is an effective transformation medium to reach people with distinctive backgrounds, including their age, social status, domicile, education, culture, language, and even religion. Secondly, polygamy is considered sacred as it is correlated with religion. However, in the industrial sector, polygamy becomes a profane commodity once it is taken as a theme in a movie. Therefore, this study investigated the commodification types of polygamy in the AMS movie and …

Is The United Nations A Locus Of International Order Imperiality Maintenance? Reflections From The South West Africa Case And Chagos Archipelago Advisory Opinion, Tatiana Cardoso Squeff, Augusto Carrijo, Murilo Borges
Indonesian Journal of International Law
The international legal order, seen through third world lenses, is not only embedded with Europe’s colonial past, but also a regime that assimilates the non-European being, its relations and knowledge. Consequently, the possibility of changing such framework is almost an impossible task, being it constantly rejected by hegemonic powers, that is, by a limited number of nations that have been placed in the center of the world order in the turn of modernity and that have not left. Some may argue, yet, that the United Nations presented the international legal order with a different path, breaking with such an imperial …

Communicating Across Eternal Divides: Conceptualizing Communicated Acceptance During Parent-Child Religious Difference, Toni Morgan, Jody Koenig Kellas
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Significant religious difference in the family has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. While religious difference may be challenging for families to negotiate, the manner in which family members communicate about it seems to be helpful in promoting positive interactions between parents and children. The purpose of this study was to conceptualize a parental communicated (non) acceptance continuum in the context of significant parent-child religious difference. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 44 adults who identified a significant religious difference with their parent. The results suggested that communicated (non)acceptance occurred along a continuum with four ranges of behaviors: communicated nonacceptance, ambivalence, …

Macrodosing To Microdosing With Psychedelics: Clinical, Social, And Cultural Perspectives, Ayse Ceren Kaypak, Amir Raz
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
To date, the clinical and scientific literature has best documented the effects of classical psychedelics, such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin, and dimethyltryptamine (DMT), in typical quantities most often associated with macrodosing. More recently, however, microdosing with psychedelics has emerged as a social trend and nascent therapeutic intervention. This variation in psychedelic practice refers to repeat, intermittent ingestion of less-than-macrodose amounts that do not cause the effects associated with full-blown “trips”. Microdosing paves the road to incorporating psychedelic drugs into a daily routine while maintaining, or even improving, cognitive and mental function. Unlike macrodosing with psychedelics, the influence of …

Novel Epidemics: Contagion And Metaphor In Us Literature, Maxwell Clement Cassity
Novel Epidemics: Contagion And Metaphor In Us Literature, Maxwell Clement Cassity
Dissertations - ALL
Metaphors of epidemic and contagion have played a powerful role in shaping American identity by using disease to symbolically mark out certain raced and classed populations as outsiders to the social body. In the twentieth century, epidemics and epidemiological reading came to dominate not only the fields of science, but also literary and cultural production and its critical lenses. “Novel Epidemics” examines how American novelists William Faulkner, Ishmael Reed, and Helena María Viramontes used epidemic as a fictional framework for examining and critiquing the ways that the US social body was imagined, constructed, and reinforced through an epidemiological lens. Using …
