Natural killer (NK) cells mediate antibody dependent cytotoxic killing of cancer cells via cross-linking FcγR on NK cells with IgG-Fc. Studies have shown that the single-hinge cleaved IgGs (scIgGs) have dysfunctional Fc and failed engagement with FcγRs on immune cells. However, little is known about how scIgGs impact on antitumor immunity in the tumor microenvironment. In this study, we revealed a significant association of tumor scIgGs with tumor progression and poor outcomes of breast cancer patients (n = 547). Using multiple mouse tumor models, we demonstrated that tumor scIgGs reduced NK cell cytotoxic activities and resulted in aggressive tumor progression. …

The Ifn-Γ Receptor Promotes Immune Dysregulation And Disease In Sting Gain-Of-Function Mice, W. Alexander Stinson, Cathrine A. Miner, Fang R. Zhao, Annena Jane Lundgren, Subhajit Poddar, Jonathan J. Miner Sep 2022

The Ifn-Γ Receptor Promotes Immune Dysregulation And Disease In Sting Gain-Of-Function Mice, W. Alexander Stinson, Cathrine A. Miner, Fang R. Zhao, Annena Jane Lundgren, Subhajit Poddar, Jonathan J. Miner

2020-Current year OA Pubs

STING gain-of-function mutations cause STING-associated vasculopathy with onset in infancy (SAVI) in humans, a disease characterized by spontaneous lung inflammation and fibrosis. Mice with STING gain-of-function mutations (SAVI mice) develop αβ T cell-dependent lung disease and also lack lymph nodes. Although SAVI has been regarded as a type I interferonopathy, the relative contributions of the three interferon receptors are incompletely understood. Here, we show that STING gain of function led to upregulation of IFN-γ-induced chemokines in the lungs of SAVI mice and that deletion of the type II IFN receptor (IFNGR1), but not the type I IFN receptor (IFNAR1) or …

Bagay: A Structural-Phenomenological Discussion Of A Movement, Niccolo Rocamora; Vitug Sep 2022

Bagay: A Structural-Phenomenological Discussion Of A Movement, Niccolo Rocamora; Vitug

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle discusses the Bagay movement using critical discourse analysis, a structural approach, and the concept of loob or inner life through a phenomenological approach in the context of the Ateneo de Manila in the 1960s, when the university underwent Filipinization. While literature on social movements is useful in understanding Bagay, concepts from the humanities may further enrich it. Starting as a literary movement that forwarded a poetic style characterized by its novel use of imagery and language, Bagay grew into a social movement that influenced changes within the academic landscape of the Ateneo and various aspects of Philippine culture. Theorizing Non-Translation Through The Lens Of Queer Studies, Remy Attig Sep 2022

Theorizing Non-Translation Through The Lens Of Queer Studies, Remy Attig

Center for Women and Gender Equity Research Seminar Series

In this seminar, Dr. Remy Attig, Assistant Professor of Translation Studies & Spanish at BGSU, will discuss “cislation,” a term he proposes to refer to the existence of a text solely within the language and culture whence it emerged, which may be preferred over translation for any number of reasons. Attig will explore some of those motivations and workshop with participants how the notion of cislation might enrich the larger fields of translation studies and queer studies. Dr. Attig’s work draws from postcolonial and queer theories in translation studies, sociolinguistics, and cultural studies to explore activist and social justice movements …

Do Autistic People’S Support Needs And Non‑Autistic People’S Support For The Neurodiversity Movement Contribute To Heightened Autism Stigma In South Korea Vs. The Us?, So Yoon Kim, Kristen Gillespie‑Lynch Sep 2022

Do Autistic People’S Support Needs And Non‑Autistic People’S Support For The Neurodiversity Movement Contribute To Heightened Autism Stigma In South Korea Vs. The Us?, So Yoon Kim, Kristen Gillespie‑Lynch

Publications and Research

We examined stigma towards vignette characters representing diverse autistic characteristics (social, non-speaking, or repetitive interests or restricted behaviors; RIRB) among 259 South Korean and 240 American participants (age range=18~74).Within each domain, participants were randomized to read a vignette depicting low or high support needs. Koreans reported greater stigma towards autistic characteristics and less awareness of and support for the neurodiversity movement thanAmericans. Autistic characters’ support needs and rater characteristics (autism knowledge, neurodiversity endorsement, and contact quantity) predicted stigma in at least one domain, and after accounting for these variables, participants’ nationality was suggestively associated only with stigma towards social characteristics …

Middle School Engineering Teachers’ Enactments Of Pedagogies Rooted In Funds Of Knowledge And Translanguaging, Amy Wilson-Lopez, Jorge Acosta-Feliz Sep 2022

Middle School Engineering Teachers’ Enactments Of Pedagogies Rooted In Funds Of Knowledge And Translanguaging, Amy Wilson-Lopez, Jorge Acosta-Feliz

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Multilingual students should have opportunities to learn and do engineering in learning environments that foreground and sustain their cultural and linguistic practices. However, little is known about how middle school engineering teachers enact these environments. To address this gap in research and practice, this comparative case study describes the different ways in which two middle school technology and engineering teachers enacted pedagogies rooted in funds of knowledge and translanguaging. The teachers and research team engaged in a professional learning community, which focused on funds of knowledge and language-based pedagogies, for over one year. The teachers enacted pedagogies that incorporated principles …

‘Aging In Place’ Or ‘Stuck In Place’? The Aging In Place Experiences Of Older Adults In A Gentrifying Neighborhood In Hong Kong, Ho Wing Lau Sep 2022

‘Aging In Place’ Or ‘Stuck In Place’? The Aging In Place Experiences Of Older Adults In A Gentrifying Neighborhood In Hong Kong, Ho Wing Lau

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Urbanization and population aging are two of the most critical global trends in the 21st century. In particular, the aging experiences of older adults living in gentrified urban areas has raised the attention of scholars from various disciplines. Urban aging concerns how and why some older adults can thrive in urban life while others are struggling to adapt. Hong Kong is experiencing ‘double aging’ —an aging population and a large scale of aging buildings, which make it particularly challenging to strike a balance between urban renewal and preservation of the community for older adults to age in place. The challenges …

The Plight Of Managing Audio-Visual Archives In Developing Economies: The Case Of Zimbabwe, Samson Mutsagondo, Sabina Tholanah

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study used the case study of the Audio-Visual Unit of the National Archives of Zimbabwe to interrogate challenges faced in managing audio-visual archives in developing economies despite their centrality as documentary heritage. The study firstly addresses the importance of audio-visual archives such as enhancing collective societal memory, preservation of culture and provision of entertainment. Thereafter, the study addresses challenges faced such as lack of collection development policy, lack of skilled manpower and technological obsolescence. It is against this background that the study proposes a framework that can be used to improve the way audio-visual archives are managed, the Tripartite …

Religious education and teaching began to shift from traditional face-to-face to online teaching. Educational institutions no longer monopolize Islamic religious education. This study examines the shift in religious education authority due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study has analyzed videos of popular religious studies broadcast on social media, YouTube, and Facebook using a qualitative content analysis method. This study finds …

Storytelling And Leadership In The Deaf Community, Luane Davis Haggerty Sep 2022

Storytelling And Leadership In The Deaf Community, Luane Davis Haggerty

JADARA

This article addresses a gap in scholarship on leadership styles in the Deaf community. There is an invisible style of leadership differing from the mainstream culture that has not been previously addressed in the literature at any depth. This article was intended to begin a discussion addressing this gap. My analysis of literature in the leadership fields, Deaf Studies and Performance Studies indicates a unique style of leadership by Deaf people within a Deaf community that is collaborative in nature yet values the individual. Further studies into Deaf leadership are warranted and may help to uncover this "collective individualist" approach …

Faculty Research 2022

Model organism (MO) research provides a basic understanding of biology and disease due to the evolutionary conservation of the molecular and cellular language of life. MOs have been used to identify and understand the function of orthologous genes, proteins, cells and tissues involved in biological processes, to develop and evaluate techniques and methods, and to perform whole-organism-based chemical screens to test drug efficacy and toxicity. However, a growing richness of datasets and the rising power of computation raise an important question: How do we maximize the value of MOs? In-depth discussions in over 50 virtual presentations organized by the National …

The book is divided into two sections of student essays that discuss the main goals of the program: the roles of partnership and social science education in PME. Each section is introduced by a reflection from one of our esteemed partners who worked on the project over the past two years. Eleven masters’ students contributed essays informed by their experience that comment on the broader topics of scientific innovation through collaboration, the role of social science research for national security, and how they would like to see PME take creative advantage of programs like Minerva DECUR.

Low-Ammonium Environment Increases The Nutrient Exchange Between Diatom–Diazotroph Association Cells And Facilitates Photosynthesis And N2 Fixation—A Mechanistic Modeling Analysis, Meng Gao, Gabrielle Armin, Keisuke Inomura Sep 2022

Low-Ammonium Environment Increases The Nutrient Exchange Between Diatom–Diazotroph Association Cells And Facilitates Photosynthesis And N2 Fixation—A Mechanistic Modeling Analysis, Meng Gao, Gabrielle Armin, Keisuke Inomura

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Diatom–diazotroph associations (DDAs) are one of the most important symbiotic dinitrogen (N2) fixing groups in the oligotrophic ocean. Despite their capability to fix N2, ammonium (NH4+) remains a key nitrogen (N) source for DDAs, and the effect of NH4+ on their metabolism remains elusive. Here, we developed a coarse-grained, cellular model of the DDA with NH4+ uptake and quantified how the level of extracellular NH4+ influences metabolism and nutrient exchange within the symbiosis. The model shows that, under a fixed growth rate, an increased NH4+ concentration may lower the required level of N2 fixation and photosynthesis, and decrease carbon (C) …

Pumpkin Spice And Everything Nice? An Assessment Of Social Media Mentions Of Pumpkin Spice, Jin-A Choi, Bond Benton, Yi Luo, Harlan Cruz, Paulette Gando-Duenas, Jennnifer Russo, Therese Sheridan, Rayanne Yamout

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

Pumpkin spice may only be a mix of a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves, but it has become an enduring staple of the transition to autumn for both consumers and brands. Cumulatively, pumpkin spice has a unique cultural space enhanced by the emergence of specific demographics, supported by sensory aspects of the trend, driven by nostalgia, and fostered by the illusion of scarcity from its time-bound availability. With that in mind, evaluating pumpkin spice’s space in terms of activities in social media is an important area of investigation for researchers and consumer brands. To that end, this …

Holy Impairment: The Body As The Nexus Of Apocalyptic Ekphrasis In Acts 2:1–13, Meghan Henning Sep 2022

Holy Impairment: The Body As The Nexus Of Apocalyptic Ekphrasis In Acts 2:1–13, Meghan Henning

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

This article reads Acts 2:1–13 as an example of apocalyptic ekphrasis, bringing together disparate imagery for rhetorical effect. In particular, the Septuagint imagery of theophany is combined with the imagery of divine healing that was associated with the god Asclepius. I explore the imagery of the divided tongue that rests on bodies and transforms them, an element of Acts 2:3 that many interpreters have given up trying to explain. The visual association of snakes and healing was prevalent not only at the shrines devoted to Asclepius but broadly in a variety of contexts outside the shrines. This complex of imagery …

Novel Therapeutic Strategies For Alzheimer’S Disease: Targeting Toll-Like Receptor Signaling And A Multi-Target Approach, Giovanni Oliveros Sep 2022

Novel Therapeutic Strategies For Alzheimer’S Disease: Targeting Toll-Like Receptor Signaling And A Multi-Target Approach, Giovanni Oliveros

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is multifactorial, and its hallmarks include the formation of amyloid-beta (Ab) plaques and neurofibrillary tau tangles, accompanied by an increase in glial cell activation, culminating in neurodegeneration, chronic neuroinflammation, and cognitive decline in human patients. AD will cost the United States over $300 million this year alone and is projected to cost over $1 trillion by 2050, AD is a serious concern for the aging population, and efforts need to be redirected towards more effective therapeutic intervention strategies. Drugs aimed at halting AD progression have so far proven unsuccessful due to the development of pharmaceuticals that target …

Analog Matters: Labels, Cassettes, And Alternative Economies In Argentina’S Independent Music Scenes, Maria Agustina Checa Sep 2022

Analog Matters: Labels, Cassettes, And Alternative Economies In Argentina’S Independent Music Scenes, Maria Agustina Checa

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is a multi-sited ethnographic study of current cassette production and circulation in Argentina. It analyzes the work of independent labels that record music available online onto cassette tapes, incorporating a variety of music styles. I examine practices of production, circulation, and exchange, and the alternative economies performed around cassettes, with particular attention to the materialities constituting these processes. Through cassettes, I conceptualize and trace "relational value," a notion to understand objects with different kinds of social agencies valued for their abilities to generate connections. Relational value is a theoretical construct that emerges from the ground-up approach to studying …

Audiovisual Afterlives: The Soundtrack Of Liberal Nostalgia, Max W. Kaplan Sep 2022

Audiovisual Afterlives: The Soundtrack Of Liberal Nostalgia, Max W. Kaplan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Following the 2016 American Presidential election, celebrity endorsements proved to be a more narrow gauge of public opinion than ever. The symbolic alignment with popular musicians, which had long abetted the Democratic Party’s standing with youth and particular identity groups, seemed only to reaffirm the party’s establishment status, drawing disavowal in a wave of anti-establishment sentiment on both the left and right. ‘Retromania,’ a term first coined by Simon Reynolds in 2010, can be tracked conceptually from the nostalgic inclinations of twenty-first century popular culture to the ideological sphere, where nostalgic, essentialized constructions of community, identity, and progress have coalesced …
