Between Activism And Academia: Zine-Making As A Feminist Response To Covid-19, Emily M. Gray, Joanna Pollitt, Mindy Blaise

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper gives an account of a series of three Zoom zine-making workshops run between March and July 2020 that were themed the political, the personal and the practical. A micro-reading of the zines is offered as data that mirror the aims of the workshops, to queer time by slowing down and creating a pause. The process of zine-making as feminist praxis is examined, and the zines themselves are discussed as data that reflect specific moments in time during the early phases of the pandemic. By inviting everyday feminist academic workers, from PhD candidates to professors to participate in a …

Exhibiting Slavery: Biographical Approaches, Paul L. Arthur, Isobel Smith

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Within museums, interpretation and curation have increasingly employed personal stories and intimate storytelling to present broader narratives about the past. This article explores some of the opportunities and challenges of biographical storytelling in museums and public sites of memory that engage with the issue of slavery, analysing Australian exhibitions alongside international contexts and theories of museology, historiography and memory. It will look at representations of historical and modern slavery in Australia, as well as global representations of the transatlantic slave trade and other traumatic histories such as the Holocaust. The discussion explores the potential for personal counter-narratives, the reimagining of …

Tracking Body Dissatisfaction And Body Ideals Of Ethnically Diverse College Women, Emma Johnson Jan 2022

Tracking Body Dissatisfaction And Body Ideals Of Ethnically Diverse College Women, Emma Johnson

Human Development and Family Science

Globally, women are exposed to society-created, unachievable body ideals, which change over time and are subject to influence by other, typically Western, societies. Socializing agents such as family members, peers, and media often reinforce these ideals through pressure, which can then lead to body dissatisfaction. Research on body ideals and body dissatisfaction disproportionately focuses on White women within the United States. While this group is important to continue to examine, there is a need to include women from outside of the United States and from Non-Western societies. Thus, this study examined college women’s perceptions of body ideals within and outside …

The Influence Of Extracellular Matrix On Human Periodontal Ligament Stem Cell Properties, Daneeya Na Nan Jan 2022

The Influence Of Extracellular Matrix On Human Periodontal Ligament Stem Cell Properties, Daneeya Na Nan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The periodontal ligament (PDL) is a crucial tissue connecting teeth to surrounding alveolar bone, withstanding the mechanical forces of mastication, speech, and deglutition. The extracellular matrix (ECM) of the PDL plays a critical role in maintaining PDL cell stability and function in response to external forces. Mechanotransduction, the process by which cells convert mechanical signals into biochemical signals, is essential for PDL cells to sense and respond to mechanical stimuli. The ECM is a critical mediator of mechanotransduction, as it is responsible for transmitting mechanical forces to cells and regulating cellular responses to mechanical stress. Matricellular proteins, such as periostin …

Glocalization Of Bronze Drums In Southeast Asia: The Case Of Bronze Drums In State Ceremonies Of Thailand, Taixing Li Jan 2022

Glocalization Of Bronze Drums In Southeast Asia: The Case Of Bronze Drums In State Ceremonies Of Thailand, Taixing Li

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The Bronze Drum is a living specimen of Southeast Asian culture and a testimony to the development of Southeast Asian societies for more than 2,000 years. The Bronze Drum has been inherited dynamically hitherto, and the Thai state ceremonies still adopt it. However, current scholarship on Bronze Drums is confined chiefly to static studies, which caused the omission of the essence of glocalization. This thesis adopts the theory of glocalization, namely that the Bronze Drum is the result of the interpenetration of the global and the local, resulting in unique outcomes in a specific geographic location, and then applies an …

Students’ Reflection Of Cross-Cultural Experiences: A Study Abroad Narrative, Alexandra Dudley

Masters Theses

This study sought to explore the cross-cultural experiences of students who had studied abroad during their undergraduate college years. Previous research has shown the importance and impact of study abroad and cultural experiences on student development. A qualitative approach, specifically a narrative method, was utilized to best understand students’ stories and how they made meaning of their study abroad experiences. Four participants were interviewed one-on-one, and their stories or narratives are provided here. This study revealed that students studying abroad with adequate support will experience an array of cross-cultural influences that leave lasting impacts on their personal and professional lives.

Werk At Play: Exploring The Creative Play Of A Graduate Student Writer To Reimagine Graduate Writing In The Humanities, Michelle Lafrance, Jay Hardee Jan 2022

Werk At Play: Exploring The Creative Play Of A Graduate Student Writer To Reimagine Graduate Writing In The Humanities, Michelle Lafrance, Jay Hardee

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

This nontraditional essay poses the imaginative possibilities of fostering creative, intellectual play in graduate classes in the Humanities. Exploring the case study of a vlog produced by a student in a graduate seminar, the essay traces how the hybrid, multimodal writing—writing that meshes the digital conventions of creative and scholarly genres—in the course enabled this student to “reimagine” the purpose and stock moves of effective “scholarly” writing as the student blended voices, identities, and genres in his work. Creative play can be understood as an important pedagogical tool that allows graduate students to resist coercive and exclusionary processes of socialization, …

Women In American Pop Music: Christina Aguilera’S Impact On Cultural Narratives, Chin Wai (Rosie) Wong Jan 2022

Women In American Pop Music: Christina Aguilera’S Impact On Cultural Narratives, Chin Wai (Rosie) Wong

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Pop music as a mainstream medium is often more enjoyed than critically studied. Former studies and literatures point out a major issue that many American female pop music artists face. These artists are often confined in a box that reduces their full human-being attributes to a narrowed view, where their identity is portrayed in a diminishing and inaccurate way. Despite this narrowed narrative of what a woman should be, this box has become a norm that many female artists must adhere to in order to achieve mainstream success. This paper responds to this phenomenon by analyzing Christina Aguilera’s music, spanning …

Trauma-Informed Performance Art Education, Yvonne Houy, Kymberly Mellen, Alethea Inns, Morgan Iommi Jan 2022

Trauma-Informed Performance Art Education, Yvonne Houy, Kymberly Mellen, Alethea Inns, Morgan Iommi

Creative Collaborations

Trauma is the emotional response to a disturbing event or series of events, and can cause symptoms such as unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, headaches, and nausea, according to the American Psychological Association (2022). Learning activities in the performing arts - such as adjusting the body through touch, or the emotional content of scenes - can retraumatize students unintentionally. In contrast, creating the conditions for emotional states that enhance learning is a science, and an art, that can support conditions for optimal performance including Flow states

Performing arts educators can proactively support students and performances by becoming trauma-informed and actively using intimacy …

What Does It Mean To Be A Female Character In “Indie” Game Storytelling? Narrative Framing And Humanization In Independently Developed Video Games, Mildred F. Perreault, Gregory P. Perreault, Andrea Suarez Jan 2022

What Does It Mean To Be A Female Character In “Indie” Game Storytelling? Narrative Framing And Humanization In Independently Developed Video Games, Mildred F. Perreault, Gregory P. Perreault, Andrea Suarez

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

Video games have long held a spotty history in their narratives regarding women. Most research has examined large budget games and identified issues of simplification, oversexualization, and a general lack of agency among female characters. The present study explores the gaming niche of “indie”—or independent game developer—video games in their representations of women in particular with Never Alone, Gone Home, and Her Story. These games were released around the time frame of the GamerGate controversy—a controversy which drew attention to the treatment of women in gaming culture—and hence, the games are used to reflect on a potential shift in games …

Neutrality Always Benefits The Oppressor: The Need To Rupture The Normalized Structure Of Teacher Education Programs To Diversify The Workforce, Zuhra Abawi, Ardavan Eizadirad Jan 2022

Neutrality Always Benefits The Oppressor: The Need To Rupture The Normalized Structure Of Teacher Education Programs To Diversify The Workforce, Zuhra Abawi, Ardavan Eizadirad

Education Faculty Publications

As faculties of education have undergone drastic changes to keep teacher education programs afloat while accommodating teacher candidates during a pandemic, much of these altercations are designed, much like the education system itself, to meet the needs of white, privileged students. Although many of the changes from classroom content, pedagogy, and assessment to alternative practicums are commendable in the face of a pandemic, BIPOC and teacher candidates from lower socioeconomic status, who are already underrepresented in the Ontario teacher workforce, are further disadvantaged due to existing inequities and opportunity gaps (Battiste, 2013; Colour of Poverty, 2019; Henry & Tator, 2012) …

The Community School Initiative In Toronto: Mitigating Opportunity Gaps In The Jane And Finch Community In The Wake Of Covid-19, Ardavan Eizadirad, Sally Abudiab, Brice Baartman

Education Faculty Publications

COVID-19 significantly impacted the delivery of education with widespread disruptions, particularly disadvantaging racialized and low-income families. Our research project explored how community-based programming can be adapted and mobilized to mitigate opportunity and achievement gaps for Black, Indigenous, people of colour (BIPOC), and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. The project as a case study examined an afternoon and weekend supplementary academic program called the Community School Initiative (CSI), offered from September 2020 to May 2021 to members of the Jane and Finch community in Toronto, Canada at a subsidized cost. CSI is a partnership between the non-profit organization Youth Association for …

Multiple references in sensory science indicate that foods evoke memories during consumption, however, research regarding those memories is still limited. The objective of this study was to develop a vocabulary and implement it in a memories vocabulary related to food as a complement for the evaluation of sensory attributes and emotions, using coffee as a model. The memories vocabulary was generated with a series of successive studies that involved assigning positive and negative memories to different food groups and applying mathematical algorithms (WordCountAna and Factorial Approach) and contrasting memories with the scientific literature. Subsequently, the vocabulary was used to determine …

Mitakuye Oyasin : Pedagogy And Design In Composition I, Jody Lee Rust

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mitakuye Oyasin, an Oceti Sakowin (Lakota/Nakota/Dakota) phrase that translates as “All My Relations,” is a philosophy that means all things created on earth and in the universe are related and inhabit a shared space. Because all things are related and share space, they all have a purpose and a responsibility to discover and serve that purpose to ensure all of our relatives thrive in our shared space. This relational thinking influences the way the Oceti Sakowin interact with the world, including the way they teach. In this thesis, I analyze the way composition theories shape the curriculum and pedagogy of …

The House Detroit Built: House Music In Techno City, Keaton Jose Soto-Olson Jan 2022

The House Detroit Built: House Music In Techno City, Keaton Jose Soto-Olson

Wayne State University Theses

Although house music was invented in Chicago, the genre has flourished in Detroit. Legendary DJs like Ken “The Godfather” Collier and Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale, helped pave the way for generations of house DJs and producers in Detroit, a city more known for producing techno. The genres of techno and house are related but distinct, the work of Detroit producers that worked in both styles proves as a useful case study for making distinctions between the two genres. This work examines the history and current practice of Detroit house music, contrasting it with Detroit techno and Chicago house. Using scholarly literature …

The Heirloom As Evidence: Investigating The Colonial Trace Preserved Within My Family’S Sandalwood Box, Olivia Meehan Jan 2022

The Heirloom As Evidence: Investigating The Colonial Trace Preserved Within My Family’S Sandalwood Box, Olivia Meehan

Pitzer Senior Theses

This paper accompanies my senior art exhibition Picturing the Colonial Trace. Pulling from a wide range of interdisciplinary scholars, I theorize the practice of critical white auto-ethnography through visual interrogations of family heirlooms. The heirloom as evidence holds within its form a colonial trace. I investigate this trace through my creative practice, revealing the environmental, economic, and interpersonal histories of the British colonization of the Indian subcontinent. My art disrupts my family’s narrative of a benevolent British Empire and redirects attention to the silences of my family archive. This thesis proposes a potential model for white scholars of Environmental …

Foreign Language Teachers’ Knowledge Base And The Influence Of Teaching Experience, Marianna Levrints (Lőrincz) Jan 2022

Foreign Language Teachers’ Knowledge Base And The Influence Of Teaching Experience, Marianna Levrints (Lőrincz)

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The present paper elucidated the issue of foreign language teachers’ knowledge base and the influence of teaching experience on their beliefs. A self-report questionnaire was utilised to explore what domains of knowledge language teachers prioritised in planning and delivering instruction, what sources they drew on to gain professional understanding and to compare teachers’ views relevant to the length of their experience. The analysis of data revealed quantitative dissimilarities in the assumed sources and knowledge domains, as well as teachers' instructional preferences. The study’s findings lend empirical evidence to the influence of experience on teachers’ cognitions and yield additional insight into …

Are Teachers Still The Problem? An Analysis Of The Nsw Education What Works Best Documents, Brad A. Fuller Jan 2022

Are Teachers Still The Problem? An Analysis Of The Nsw Education What Works Best Documents, Brad A. Fuller

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

: This paper interrogates Stacey’s assertion that New South Wales (NSW) education policy is underpinned by a ‘particular instance of neoliberalisation’ which has significant ‘direct and material impacts’ on teachers. It examines the role Evidence-based Practice can play in the neoliberalist reform of education globally and analyses the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation’s What Works Best documents. The paper asserts that the character of education policy in NSW is consistent with the wider Global Education Reform Movement and continues to exhibit and extend the neoliberalist tendencies identified by Stacey. Furthermore, it claims that, through a collection of neoliberalist devices, …

Lost In Adaptation:The Silencing Of The French Female Concierge, Mariah Devereux Herbeck Jan 2022

Lost In Adaptation:The Silencing Of The French Female Concierge, Mariah Devereux Herbeck

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fictional representations of the female concierge frequently underscore her negative attributes, above all her meddlesome discourse. The female concierge character in Georges Simenon's 1933 novel, Les fiançailles de M. Hire, however, provides an exception to the rule as local law authorities give credence to her word and base their investigation on her testimony. However, in two filmic adaptations of the novel—Duvivier's Panique (1946) and Patrice Leconte's Monsieur Hire (1989)—the female concierge character is practically absent. This article demonstrates how, from page to screen, the concierge's role is dissected, disembodied, and displaced in Duvivier's and Leconte's films, and finally reflects …
