Identifiability Analysis And Optimal Control Of Infectious Diseases Epidemics And Parameterization Method For (Un)Stable Manifolds Of Implicitly Defined Dynamical Systems, Timsina Archana Neupane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This dissertation is a study about applied dynamical systems on two concentrations. First, on the basis of the growing association between opioid addiction and HIV infection, a compartmental model is developed to study dynamics and optimal control of two epidemics; opioid addiction and HIV infection. We show that the disease-free-equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number R0 = max(Ru0; Rv0) < 1; here Rv0 is the reproduction number of the HIV infection, and Ru0 is the reproduction number of the opioid addiction. The addiction-only boundary equilibrium exists when Ru0 > 1 and it is locally asymptotically stable when the invasion number of the opioid addiction is Ruinv < 1: Similarly, HIV-only boundary equilibrium exists when Rv0 > 1 and it is locally asymptotically stable when the invasion number of the HIV infection is Rvinv < 1. We study structural identifiability of the parameters, estimate parameters employing yearly reported data from Central for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and study practical identifiability of estimated parameters. We observe the basic reproduction number R0 using the parameters. Next, we introduce four distinct controls in the model for the sake of control approach, including treatment for addictions, health care education about not sharing syringes, highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART), and rehab treatment for opiate addicts who are HIV infected. US population using CDC data, first applying a single control in the model and observing the results, we better understand the influence of individual control. After completing each of the four applications, we apply them together at the same time in the model and compare the outcomes using different control bounds and state variable weights. We conclude the results by presenting several graphs.

Influence Of Hydrological Variation On Wading Bird Diets And Reproduction In A Lacustrine Wetland, David A. Essian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Wetlandscape topography creates spatial variation in hydroperiod, which in turn creates spatial variation in biotic communities. Such spatiotemporal variation occurs on a large scale in some of the most productive wetlands in the world, including those of south Florida, U.S.A. Wading birds (Pelicaniformes and Ciconiiformes) are iconic, top-level consumers of such ecosystems. Infrequent drying is necessary to maintain the primary nest substrate (Salix caroliniana), and prey availability is regulated by production of prey biomass in the wet season and the subsequent concentration of prey biomass into shallow pools during the dry season. The goal of this dissertation was to explicitly …

Machine Learning Methods For Image Enhancement In Degraded Visual Environments, Dennis Estrada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Significant reduction in space, weight, power, and cost (SWAP-C) of imaging hardware has induced a paradigm shift in remote sensing where unmanned platforms have become the mainstay. However, mitigating the degraded visual environment (DVE) remains an issue. DVEs can cause a loss of contrast and image detail due to particle scattering and distortion due to turbulence-induced effects. The problem is especially challenging when imaging from unmanned platforms such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) and unmanned ariel vehicles (UAV). While single-frame image restoration techniques have been studied extensively in recent years, single image capture is not adequate to address the effects …

Prosecutors have high levels of discretion. Responsibilities of a prosecutor range from appropriate charging decisions to safeguarding principal criminal procedures. Understanding prosecutorial discretion is crucial since most convictions result from guilty pleas. Social scientists have analyzed empirical data on the influence of extra-legal characteristics during initial charging and sentencing stages. However, few have examined the interaction between case law and empirical research regarding a prosecutor’s perception concerning a defendant’s rights throughout case processing. Consequently, not much is known about how prosecutorial discretion impacts a defendant’s constitutional rights under the fifth and fourteenth amendments, specifically the Due Process and Equal Protection …

Susceptibility Of Recruiting Seagrass (Thalassia Testudinum) To Porewater H2s In Florida Bay, Kasey Macleod

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This study investigated the influence of high concentrations of porewater H2S (~100 μM) on recruitment of the tropical dominant seagrass species, Thalassia testudinum, following mortality events or "die-offs" in Florida Bay. Major seagrass die-off events (>50 km2) are occurring globally in coastal regions with mortality frequently linked to hypoxia and sediment-derived hydrogen sulfide (H2S) exposure, a well-known phytotoxin. In tropical carbonate environments, such as Florida Bay, low iron in sediments promote H2S accumulation and subsequent intrusion into seagrass meristematic tissue through roots, and root-shoot junctions. While H2S intrusion into meristematic tissue is a leading hypothesis for large-scale seagrass mortality …

The Effect Of Focused Breathing On Response Inhibition And Perception Of Affective Words: A Behavioral And An Eeg Study, Emily Ahne Jan 2022

The Effect Of Focused Breathing On Response Inhibition And Perception Of Affective Words: A Behavioral And An Eeg Study, Emily Ahne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

When practiced over long periods of time (>16 weeks), mindfulness positively impacts inhibitory processing, in that as mindfulness exposure and experience increases, inhibitory processing is enhanced. Similarly, long-term mindfulness practice diminishes the impact of emotionally-valanced scenes. However recently, more work is underway on how brief mindfulness inductions impact these same outcomes. Across two online pilot studies (behavioral outcomes only) and one in-person experiment (behavioral and neuronal outcomes), how a brief focused-breathing induction impacts response inhibition and the perception of affective words was explored. Findings demonstrate that a 30-minute mindfulness induction produced a diminished Simon Effect, as well as faster …

Automatically Generating Natural Language Descriptions Of Images By A Deep Hierarchical Framework, Lin Huo, Lin Bai, Shang Ming Zhou Jan 2022

Automatically Generating Natural Language Descriptions Of Images By A Deep Hierarchical Framework, Lin Huo, Lin Bai, Shang Ming Zhou

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Automatically generating an accurate and meaningful description of an image is very challenging. However, the recent scheme of generating an image caption by maximizing the likelihood of target sentences lacks the capacity of recognizing the human–object interaction (HOI) and semantic relationship between HOIs and scenes, which are the essential parts of an image caption. This article proposes a novel two-phase framework to generate an image caption by addressing the above challenges: 1) a hybrid deep learning and 2) an image description generation. In the hybrid deep-learning phase, a novel factored three-way interaction machine was proposed to learn the relational features …
