The Internet of Things (IoT) is experiencing explosive growth and has gained extensive attention from academia and industry in recent years. However, most of the existing IoT infrastructures are centralized, which may cause the issues of unscalability and single-point-of-failure. Consequently, decentralized IoT has been proposed by taking advantage of the emerging technology called blockchain. Voting systems are widely adopted in IoT, for example a leader election in wireless sensor networks. Self-tallying voting systems are alternatives to unsuitable, traditional centralized voting systems in decentralized IoT. Unfortunately, self-tallying voting systems inherently suffer from fairness issues, such as adaptive and abortive issues caused …

User experience of mobile apps is an essential ingredient that can influence the user base and app revenue. To ensure good user experience and assist app development, several prior studies resort to analysis of app reviews, a type of repository that directly reflects user opinions about the apps. Accurately responding to the app reviews is one of the ways to relieve user concerns and thus improve user experience. However, the response quality of the existing method relies on the pre-extracted features from other tools, including manually labelled keywords and predicted review sentiment, which may hinder the generalizability and flexibility of …

Moving Towards Communication-Oriented Language Teaching At The Primary English Level: A Vietnamese Perspective, Hien Thi Tran
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Vietnam has been attempting to build its English learners’ communicative abilities to improve the country’s competitiveness in the global market. As a result, English language Teaching (ELT) reforms have been introduced in the educational system. Part of the reforms involves the implementation of mandatory primary English education following the Communicative Language Teaching approach (CLT) despite a difficult history of CLT implementation in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. Primary English teachers have been a critical challenge for the success of a communicative curriculum in Vietnam. Teachers’ CLT understanding and pedagogies from a socio-cultural perspective have been underresearched, especially those …
Who We Are Getting It Right For: The Practitioners’ Experience Of Program Evaluation, Andrea S. Highman
Who We Are Getting It Right For: The Practitioners’ Experience Of Program Evaluation, Andrea S. Highman
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Program delivery staff are important stakeholders in program evaluation and social service organisations that intend to undertake quality evaluations must effectively engage these staff in the process (Zarinpoush, 2006). A starting point for this is recognising that staff perceptions of evaluation are influenced by professional and personal factors including their understanding of evaluation, how they think it may benefit them or their clients and the character of their prior experiences of evaluation (Taut & Alkin, 2003; Dunkley & Franklin, 2017; van Koperen et.al, 2016; Herbert, 2015).
This study interprets the experiences of staff delivering social programs in not-for-profit services in …

COVID-19 has significantly affected universities, forcing many courses to be delivered entirely online. As countries bring the pandemic under control, a potential way to safely resume some face-to-face teaching is the synchronous hybrid classroom, in which physically and remotely attending students are taught simultaneously. This comes with challenges, however, including the risk that remotely attending students perceive a ‘gap’ between their engagement and that of their physical peers. In this experience report, we describe how an interactive programming course was adapted to hybrid delivery in a way that mitigated this risk. Our solution centred on the use of a professional …

A Feasibility Assessment Of The Optimal Use Of Hydrogen Drones In Fashion Item Replenishment Logistics, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang
Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering
What should be considered in optimising the delivery routes for stock replenishment in a retail textile company? Traditional land-based truck delivery makes prompt returned or new products replenishments in small batches from one location to another impractical due to the high shipping costs incurred. Drones, which serve as digitized delivery equipment especially in western countries nowadays, realise last-mile and door-to-door deliveries. Breaking geographical barriers, drones raise operational efficiency and lower human- and equipment-related costs. Nonetheless, drone delivery regulations set legal boundaries. Added to this are the teething issues arisen in the drone deliveries across regulatory borders. As a consequence, retail …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Microservice systems are complicated due to their runtime environments and service communications. Debugging a failure involves the deployment and manipulation of microservice systems on a containerized environment and faces unique challenges due to the high complexity and dynamism of microservices. To address these challenges, we propose a debugging approach for microservice systems based on the delta debugging algorithm, which is to minimize failure-inducing deltas of circumstances (e.g., deployment, environmental configurations). Our approach includes novel techniques for defining, deploying/manipulating, and executing deltas during delta debugging. In particular, to construct a (failing) circumstance space for delta debugging to minimize, our approach defines …
