This current study examines the perception of safety on the public bus transit system in a large Brazilian metropolis. Using a web-based survey, the study reached a convenient sample of bus users of a local university who were victims and witnesses to crime in two different types of local bus transit environments - the BRT MOVE - a modern bus system and its opposing counterpart - the conventional bus system. Research questions investigate whether or not riders’ perception of safety is influenced by the presence of mechanisms of control and surveillance on buses. Using a linear regression model, this study …

Background: Limited literature is available to define the impact of the longus colli muscle, a deep flexor of the spine, on cervical spine stability despite its close proximity to the vertebrae. Aims and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine if longus colli cross-sectional area (CSA) is associated with the severity preoperative cervical degenerative spondylolisthesis. Materials and Methods: Patients undergoing elective anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for cervical spondylolisthesis between 2010-2021 were retrospectively identified. Longus colli cross-sectional areas (CSA) were measured from preoperative MRI images at the C5 level. Preoperative spondylolisthesis measurements were recorded with cervical radiographs. …
Urban Wildlife Management Planning Process And Conflict Mitigation: A Case Study Of Denver’S Canada Goose Management Plan, Brent Johannes
Urban Wildlife Management Planning Process And Conflict Mitigation: A Case Study Of Denver’S Canada Goose Management Plan, Brent Johannes
Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses
In 2019 and 2020, the USDA in coordination with Denver Parks and Recreation removed 2,174 geese from 6 different parks within the City of Denver. The removals and use of lethal methods to manage the concerns related to the geese population in Denver’s parks caused a public conflict and resulted in multiple legal challenges with the City of Denver. The opposition group claimed that the city did not sufficiently engage with the public in the formation of the goose management plan, and did not provide any public notification about the plan to remove geese. City officials have claimed that attempts …

This paper aims to provide differentiated security protection for infotainment data commu- nication in Internet-of-Vehicle (IoV) networks. The IoV is a network of vehicles that uses various sensors, software, built-in hardware, and communication technologies to enable information exchange between pedestrians, cars, and urban infrastructure. Negligence on the security of infotainment data commu- nication in IoV networks can unintentionally open an easy access point for social engineering attacks. The attacker can spread false information about traffic conditions, mislead drivers in their directions, and interfere with traffic management. Such attacks can also cause distractions to the driver, which has a potential implication …
Philosophy For Children As A Form Of Spiritual Education, Olivier Michaud, Maughn Rollins Gregory
Philosophy For Children As A Form Of Spiritual Education, Olivier Michaud, Maughn Rollins Gregory
Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works
In the last two decades, some authors in the philosophy for children movement have theorized that the community of philosophical inquiry can be a form of spiritual practice, of the care of the self, or a wisdom practice (De Marzio, 2009; Gregory, 2009, 2013, 2014;Gregory & Laverty, 2009). Yet, it is unclear if philosophy for children is, by itself, a form of spiritual education, or if it requires some sorts of modification to be one. And, if it is or can be a form of spiritual education, we can interrogate in what ways and to what extent is it one. …

Liberty And Justice For Y’All: Allowing Legal Paraprofessionals To Practice Law To Reduce The Effects Of Legal Deserts In Rural Georgia, Amanda Claxton
Mercer Law Review
The lack of attorneys in rural America is not merely a social or cultural problem—it is a legal problem that officers of the courts cannot continue to ignore. Legal deserts are geographical areas where legal services are widely unavailable. Particularly in rural Georgia, legal deserts are a substantial issue. Attorneys and nonprofit organizations have attempted to ease the detrimental effects of legal deserts in a variety of ways; for various reasons, those efforts have been insufficient, and rural counties struggle to attract lawyers. Still, there is one method of resolving legal deserts that Georgia has yet to attempt: creating an …

Assessing Treatment Access, Medication Use, Caregiver Strain And Emergency Service Use In Families Of Youth With Autism, Emmaline Thorpe
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background: Families with autistic youth utilize emergency services (e.g., police, emergency department) at greater rates than neurotypical peers. While research has recently explored this phenomenon, unknowns remain in how pharmaceutical, therapeutic, family (e.g., caregiver strain), and child factors (concurrent challenging behaviors) may influence the likelihood of this population resorting to emergency care. Method: The current study recruited caregivers (N = 55) of youth with autism and co-occurring challenging behaviors (ages 2 – 22) to complete an online survey regarding their use of emergency services, child medication and therapy, and caregiver strain. Caregivers were compensated for their time. Results: Outcomes revealed …

Dissolve Of Living Space: Living Space Under The Development Of Metaverse, Wenting Feng, Nuo Lyu
Architecture Thesis Prep
According to our vision, in the future, after the use of the metaverse becomes popular, we will spend a lot of time working, living and playing in the metaverse. The space needed in reality will be reduced by the use of the metaverse, and public buildings will be retained or not depending on the nature of the building. Because the focus of human life shifts from reality to the metaverse, energy and material consumption will also be reduced, and environmental problems can be properly alleviated. The nature in the real city will also be expanded by the reduction of the …

This project is an exploration of frames of reference that guide human authorship and how they influence machine output . “Reference frames are [used] to make predictions, create plans, and perform movements.” (Hawkins 131). We guided our exploration under the principle that if we control who authored the frames of reference that the AI receives, then that would influence the output of the machine. However, we began to question to what degree we need to control the machine in order to have a valuable output –is human-intelligent authorship necessary for machine intelligence to function productively, or is machine intelligence enough …

Panopticon: A Privacy Revelation, Kexin Wang, Zhexu Yang
Architecture Thesis Prep
Our thesis project studies and analyzes the control of Surveillance Capitalism over people’s privacy, and how to make people realize the importance of privacy through the means of an architectural/design narrative. This concept comes from Shoshana Zuboff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power, which explains how tech companies collect extra data, capture people’s behavioral surplus and sell them to third party customers, such as advertising companies, thus the predictions about people’s preferences accordingly. In this process, technology companies can make tremendous profit by stealing users’ personal information and then …

Chinese Celebrities’ Political Signaling On Weibo, Dan Chen, Gengsong Gao
Political Science Faculty Publications
In China, celebrities can dominate public discourse and shape popular culture, but they are under the state’s close gaze. Recent studies have revealed how the state disciplines and co-opts celebrities to promote patriotism, foster traditional values, and spread political propaganda. However, how do celebrities adapt to the changing political environment? Focusing on political signaling on Weibo, we analyze a novel dataset and find that the vast majority of top celebrities repost from official accounts of government agencies and state media outlets, though there are variations. Younger celebrities with more followers tend to repost from official accounts more. Celebrities from Taiwan …
Marketing And The Church, Parker Panetti
Marketing And The Church, Parker Panetti
Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper attempts to take an in-depth look at the current state of the Church in America and how marketing has and will continue to play a key role in its position in society.
The word marketing comes from the concept of the merchant buying and selling a product - in the market. From a Christian perspective, marketing tells the story of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ - who bought and redeemed mankind for a price, saved from sin, and set apart for service to the Lord. Churches have this story, the greatest story to tell, but people are …
Analysis Of Robert Schumann’S “Fantasy Pieces For Clarinet And Piano”, Opus 73, For A Greater Understanding Of A Standard In Western Classical Solo Repertory, Kaleigh Alwood
Music Undergraduate Honors Theses
In a mere two days, Robert Schumann composed a duet that would become a lasting symbol of romanticism in chamber music. “Fantasy Pieces for Clarinet and Piano”, Op. 73 is now a standard in clarinet repertoire. As such, the piece is frequently performed and analyzed. Schumann and his “Fantasy Pieces” are well known and broadly discussed, which leads one to wonder: how does one contribute to and interpret such a standard? To answer this question, it is proposed that research is utilized to examine the history surrounding the composer and the work alongside theoretical analysis to find and interpret key …

To obtain this information, …
Mental Health Concerns In The Pediatric Population Following Covid-19, Kristina N. Yaczik, Ashley M. Komosinski
Mental Health Concerns In The Pediatric Population Following Covid-19, Kristina N. Yaczik, Ashley M. Komosinski
Honors Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to an increase in stress and mental health concerns in the pediatric population. Research indicates a decrease in pediatric mental health incidences in 2020, followed by an increase in 2021 and 2022. It is thought that the initial decrease may be due to the intensity of the pandemic at the time and a lack of hospital beds available. The increase suggests a response to the high levels of adversity and stress children and adolescents faced both during and after the origination of the pandemic. The evidence supports the idea that the COVID-19 pandemic had a …
Attitudes Of University Students, Faculty, And Staff Towards Stuttering, Allison Shattuck
Attitudes Of University Students, Faculty, And Staff Towards Stuttering, Allison Shattuck
Honors Projects
People who stutter (PWS) can experience negative reactions and judgment from people who do not stutter. They are stigmatized and threatened with social exclusion, placing them at risk for compromised quality of life (Przepiorka et al., 2013). Furthermore, it is imperative to evaluate attitudes of university faculty and students relative to stuttering because it will identify negative attitudes that could be harmful to people who stutter.
This poster analyzed the following research questions: (RQ1) Are there differing beliefs regarding stuttering or people who stutter between faculty and students? (RQ2) Are there differences between beliefs across different colleges? (RQ3) Are attitudes …
The Role Of Virtual Reality In Art Therapy To Mitigate Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) Symptoms, James Hutson
The Role Of Virtual Reality In Art Therapy To Mitigate Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) Symptoms, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
Traditional art therapy sessions are designed for face-to-face engagement with patients as with other mental health services such as counseling. However, the pandemic of 2019 severely limited access to these services and, initially, led to widespread cancelation and postponement until the nature of COVID-19 could be better understood. When treatment resumed, video conferencing was the preferred method of holding therapy sessions one-on-one to diagnose patients and provide services. Similar approaches were taken in art therapy with less efficacy given the hands-on nature of the required activities. With the rise of virtual reality (VR) as a more widely accessible technology since …

Over the past two years, provider colleagues and their clients in an outpatient private practice where this educational seminar took place had been increasingly …
Surrogate Modeling Of Nonlinear Components And Circuits, Byron William Byars
Surrogate Modeling Of Nonlinear Components And Circuits, Byron William Byars
All Theses
Surrogate models are simplified approximations of functions that are described by complex equations. Surrogate modeling of physical systems have been used in various fields such as biology, fluid dynamics, climate modeling, and various other engineering disciplines. This data-driven approach is used to decrease computational cost, decrease computation time, or when the output of a system is diffcult or impossible to measure, by using a \black-box" method to approximate the output given inputs. In regards to circuit analysis, surrogate models can be used to decrease computation time and computational load.
In this thesis, surrogate modeling is used to model various nonlinear …
Designing The House Of The Future: Social Commentary On Retrofuturism, Alyssa Woodruff
Designing The House Of The Future: Social Commentary On Retrofuturism, Alyssa Woodruff
All Theses
This project explores the aesthetics of retrofuturism and the historical context of the house of the future. Retrofuturism captures how people perceived the future during previous eras in history. Conceptions of the future reflect the time period in which they are created. I designed and implemented a 3D model of a house of the future to express the aesthetics of mid-century modernism. I created the models in ZBrush and Maya. I took inspiration from The Jetsons cartoon, the New York World’s Fair of 1964-65, and Disneyland’s original Tomorrowland theme park. This project also incorporates contemporary features to reflect modern concerns. …
