A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study On Voluntary Reporting Of Professional Groups In U.S. Commercial Aviation, James Norman
A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study On Voluntary Reporting Of Professional Groups In U.S. Commercial Aviation, James Norman
Theses and Dissertations
Aviation safety culture research does not exist regarding the specific factors that either promote or discourage voluntary safety reporting among different frontline groups in U.S. Part 121 operations. Moreover, while safety culture has been shown to vary across workgroups, cross-sectional research across multiple aviation organizations regarding voluntary reporting is lacking. To address this gap in the literature, an exploratory study was conducted utilizing a sequential, confirmatory mixed methods approach. A 28-item survey was distributed to air traffic controllers, dispatchers, maintenance technicians, and pilots. The instrument quantitatively assessed organizational safety values, reporting friction, previous reporting experience, just culture, and voluntary reporting …

Indigenizing The Outbreak Narrative: How Lee Maracle, Richard Van Camp, And Cherie Dimaline Critique Settler Colonialism And Medical Racism, Deanne Michelle Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
The dissertation analyzes how Lee Maracle's Ravensong, Richard Van Camp's "I Am Filled with a Trembling Heart", and Cherie Dimaline's The Marrow Thieves critique the traditional outbreak narrative structures identified by Charles Rosenberg and Priscilla Wald. Specifically, these Indigenous texts decenter the microbe for a more miasmic perspective that takes into consideration how settler colonialism and medical racism complicates the disease experience and its social epidemic.

National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration: Technical Reports and Related Materials
Spanish-speaking populations in the United States are more vulnerable in disaster contexts due to inequities, such as language barriers, that prevent them from receiving life-saving information. For the past couple of decades, governmental organizations have addressed these issues by translating weather watches, warnings, and advisories into Spanish. Previous studies suggest that these Spanish translations do not communicate the same level of urgency as their English counterparts. To identify whether these translated products result in inequities between English and Spanish speaker reception and comprehension of forecast information, we asked a representative sample of U.S. English (n = 1,550) and Spanish (n …

Influence Of The Virgin Mary In Anglo-Saxon Christianity, Kimberly Merfert
Influence Of The Virgin Mary In Anglo-Saxon Christianity, Kimberly Merfert
Honors Theses
Though it remains unclear when Christianity was first introduced to England, it is certain Christianity was established by the early third century. It was not until the beginning of the seventh century, however, that Christianity flourished in Anglo-Saxon England, bringing with it a new understanding of the feminine role. Once enthralled by the coming of Jesus Christ, worshippers of the Virgin Mary idealized the Mother of God as the realization of the ideals of purity, humility, and passivity. They defined Saint Mary by her sinlessness, valuing her unbreakable virginity as a symbol of unparalleled strength, responsibility, and holiness. Mary herself …

When The Influencer Says Jump! How Influencer Signaling Affects Engagement With Covid-19 Misinformation, Ben Wasike
When The Influencer Says Jump! How Influencer Signaling Affects Engagement With Covid-19 Misinformation, Ben Wasike
Communication Faculty Publications
With signaling theory, credibility, and social media engagement (SME) as guiding frameworks, this study used an experiment to examine how social media influencers (SMIs) affect how people engage with COVID-19 misinformation. SMI-promoted information elicited more SME, credibility, and purchase likelihood than non-SMI promoted information. The most effective message was a post promoted by an SMI that contained detailed information about an authentic product. However, data indicated nuance regarding the effect of SMIs. The authenticity of the information as well as the amount of detail in the post played a role. Additionally, mediated effects analysis showed that the impact of SME …

Reducing Physical Restraints And Emergency Psychiatric Medications On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit With The Broset Violence Checklist, Victoria Hernandez
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Background: Physical restraint and psychiatric emergency medication use, especially psychotropic medications, is problematic, negatively impacting patient safety on psychiatric units (Ambwani et al., 2021; Iuppa et al., 2013; Rahman, 2021). The Bröset Violence Checklist (Woods & Almvik, 2002), a short-term violence-predicting tool, has been used in the inpatient setting to predict violent outbursts and determine when high-level violence interventions are needed.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to recognize signs and symptoms of aggression and agitation early and intervene to reduce the use of physical restraints and emergency restraint medications on an inpatient psychiatric unit, thereby improving patient safety. …
Optogenetic Heart Pacing And Heart Arrest In Drosophila Melanogaster Using Integrated Ocm Imaging And Light Stimulation System, Yuxuan Wang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Optogenetics has been widely applied to cardiovascular research using different models. Among them, Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) outstands for its similarity of human genes for disease modeling and short life cycle for rapid screening to analyze genetic mechanisms of heart disease. However, most of the current models only allow either activation or inhibition of the heartbeat, which is not sufficient to model complex arrhythmia. Our lab developed a novel Drosophila transgenic model based on a double transgenic line containing two light-sensitive genes, Channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) and Halorhodopsin2.0 (NpHR2.0), that enable dual-directional control of the heartbeat rhythm. Real-time optical control of the …

Assessment Of Distribution Line Zero-Sequence Overcurrent Protection Inrush Maloperation Risk And Corresponding Countermeasure With 5g, Ye Peng, Zhen Jin, Hongshan Chen, Shu Xu, Changbing Luo, Wei Hou, Jinfeng He, Jun Chen
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
The high zero-sequence inrush will be caused when the high-voltage built-in high-impedance transformer performs no-load closing, which may penetrate into the 20 kV distribution network with a grounding small resistance through the adjacent transformers, leading to the maloperation of zero-sequence overcurrent protection of distribution lines. This will result in the power loss of users. To solve this, the amplitude characteristics of high-voltage built-in high-impedance transformers are analyzed based on zero-sequence inrush formula. Then, the validity of the model and the possibility of protection maloperation are studied based on PSCAD/EMTDC simulation platform. At last, the calculation procedure for assessing risks of …

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
The ever-increasing coupling relationship between cyber and physical systems makes cyber-attacks become an important factor affecting the reliability of power system operations. First, this article conducts the analysis of the network security risk from the attacker’s perspective, infers the available resources of the attacker based on the identity of the attacker, analyzes the purpose of the attack to be achieved, and infers the possible penetration and intrusion path and damage modes. The guidance can be provided to develop the specific protection methods based on the above analysis. Then this paper analyzes the deficiencies of the trusted computing, hierarchical protection, security …

Coresets For Vertical Federated Learning: Regularized Linear Regression And K-Means Clustering, Lingxiao Huang, Zhize Li, Jialin Sun, Haoyu Zhao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Vertical federated learning (VFL), where data features are stored in multiple parties distributively, is an important area in machine learning. However, the communication complexity for VFL is typically very high. In this paper, we propose a unified framework by constructing coresets in a distributed fashion for communication-efficient VFL. We study two important learning tasks in the VFL setting: regularized linear regression and $k$-means clustering, and apply our coreset framework to both problems. We theoretically show that using coresets can drastically alleviate the communication complexity, while nearly maintain the solution quality. Numerical experiments are conducted to corroborate our theoretical findings.
Towards Reinterpreting Neural Topic Models Via Composite Activations, Jia Peng Lim, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Towards Reinterpreting Neural Topic Models Via Composite Activations, Jia Peng Lim, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Most Neural Topic Models (NTM) use a variational auto-encoder framework producing K topics limited to the size of the encoder’s output. These topics are interpreted through the selection of the top activated words via the weights or reconstructed vector of the decoder that are directly connected to each neuron. In this paper, we present a model-free two-stage process to reinterpret NTM and derive further insights on the state of the trained model. Firstly, building on the original information from a trained NTM, we generate a pool of potential candidate “composite topics” by exploiting possible co-occurrences within the original set of …
A Recommendation On How To Teach K-Means In Introductory Analytics Courses, Manoj Thulasidas
A Recommendation On How To Teach K-Means In Introductory Analytics Courses, Manoj Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We teach K-Means clustering in introductory data analytics courses because it is one of the simplest and most widely used unsupervised machine learning algorithms. However, one drawback of this algorithm is that it does not offer a clear method to determine the appropriate number of clusters; it does not have a built-in mechanism for K selection. What is usually taught as the solution for the K Selection problem is the so-called elbow method, where we look at the incremental changes in some quality metric (usually, the sum of squared errors, SSE), trying to find a sudden change. In addition to …

Recent years have witnessed great potential in applying Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) in various challenging applications, such as autonomous driving, nuclear fusion control, complex game playing, etc. However, recently researchers have revealed that deep reinforcement learning models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks: malicious attackers can train adversarial policies to tamper with the observations of a well-trained victim agent, the latter of which fails dramatically when faced with such an attack. Understanding and improving the adversarial robustness of deep reinforcement learning is of great importance in enhancing the quality and reliability of a wide range of DRL-enabled systems. In this paper, …

Foreign Donations In The Higher Education Sector Of The United States And The United Kingdom:Pathways For Reputation Laundering, Alexander Cooley, Tena Prelec, John Heathershaw
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
We explore how the influx of foreign funding into the higher education sectors of the United States and United Kingdom has raised the challenge of “reputation laundering”—when foreign donors and individuals use donations to prestigious universities to boost their international public image and offset negative images or reported controversies back in their home country. We outline four pathways for reputation laundering—donations for academic programs/schools, naming rights, honorary degrees and board seats; and the offer of favorable admissions decisions—and examine the variety of policies, practices and safeguards that have been adopted by U.K. and U.S. universities in response. We present evidence, …
The Constitutional Law Of Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia Jr., Bradford R. Clark
The Constitutional Law Of Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia Jr., Bradford R. Clark
Notre Dame Law Review
The current debate over constitutional interpretation often proceeds on the assumption that the Constitution does not provide rules for its own interpretation. Accordingly, several scholars have attempted to identify applicable rules by consulting external sources that governed analogous legal texts (such as statutes, treaties, contracts, etc.). The distinctive function of the Constitution—often forgotten or overlooked—renders these analogies largely unnecessary. The Constitution was an instrument used by the people of the several States to transfer a fixed set of sovereign rights and powers from one group of sovereigns (the States) to another sovereign (the federal government), while maintaining the “States” as …

Social Trust In Criminal Justice: A Metric, Joshua Kleinfeld, Hadar Dancig-Rosenberg
Notre Dame Law Review
What is the metric by which to measure a well-functioning criminal justice system? If a modern state is going to measure performance by counting something—and a modern state will always count something—what, in the criminal justice context, should it count? Remarkably, there is at present no widely accepted metric of success or failure in criminal justice. Those there are—like arrest rates, conviction rates, and crime rates—are deeply flawed. And the search for a better metric is complicated by the cacophony of different goals that theorists, policymakers, and the public bring to the criminal justice system, including crime control, racial justice, …

Sequence-Based Bioinformatics Approaches To Predict Virus–Host Relationships In Archaea And Eukaryotes, Yingshan Li
Sequence-Based Bioinformatics Approaches To Predict Virus–Host Relationships In Archaea And Eukaryotes, Yingshan Li
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Viral metagenomics is independent of lab culturing and capable of investigating viromes of virtually any given environmental niches. While numerous sequences of viral genomes have been assembled from metagenomic studies over the past years, the natural hosts for the majority of these viral contigs have not been determined. Different computational approaches have been developed to predict hosts of bacteria phages. Nevertheless, little progress has been made in the virus-host prediction, especially for viruses that infect eukaryotes and archaea. In this study, by analyzing all documented viruses with known eukaryotic and archaeal hosts, we assessed the predictive power of four computational …
Identifying How Summer Camp Experiences Affect Children’S Environmental Literacy, Quinn Kimbell
Identifying How Summer Camp Experiences Affect Children’S Environmental Literacy, Quinn Kimbell
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Ensuring that children are prepared for environmental issues in the future can be aided by building the skill of environmental literacy. A key factor in building this skill is having natural experiences and creating one’s connection and perception of the environment. This paper aims to identify if summer camps increase children’s perception of the environment. This was completed by testing children with an environmental perception survey (Children’s Environmental Perception Scale) before and after attending a summer camp and assessing environmental pollution knowledge through drawing (modified Draw-An-Environment Test). The rural Nebraska summer camp subjected the children to many outdoor experiences, including …
