College Job Portal, Harikrishna Gonuguntla

Masters Projects

Through this project, I am producing a portal called "College Job Portal" that will make life easier for students, colleges, and the companies who hire the students by handling the hiring process. On-campus job placements are a crucial component in contemporary educational institutions. By entering information about their educational history, grades, technological abilities, and CV, students would register with the portal. Like students, companies would sign up with the site by supplying basic details like their address and contact information for human resources. The college would be the portal's administrator. Companies can advertise job openings using this site by including …

Malware Detection And Analysis, Namratha Suraneni Dec 2022

Malware Detection And Analysis, Namratha Suraneni

Masters Projects

Malicious software poses a serious threat to the cybersecurity of network infrastructures and is a global pandemic in the form of computer viruses, Trojan horses, and Internet worms. Studies imply that the effects of malware are deteriorating. The main defense against malware is malware detectors. The methods that such a detector employ define its level of quality. Therefore, it is crucial that we research malware detection methods and comprehend their advantages and disadvantages. Attackers are creating malware that is polymorphic and metamorphic and has the capacity to modify their source code as they spread. Furthermore, existing defenses, which often utilize …

Scholastic A Cappella And The Construction Of Whiteness, Community, And Power, Daniel Fister Dec 2022

Scholastic A Cappella And The Construction Of Whiteness, Community, And Power, Daniel Fister

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Vocal-only student ensembles who cover contemporary popular music at most U.S. high schools and universities, known as a cappella groups, mold students as musical listeners and performers. Though predominantly composed of liberal and progressive people who value diversity and inclusion, a cappella communities perpetuate racialized inequities of sound and representation. I analyze how race, particularly whiteness, shapes the intersecting communities of scholastic a cappella through ideologies of sound (i.e. singing and arranging styles), social structures (i.e. audition processes, competition policies, and judging rubrics), and discourses (how a range of a cappella practitioners discuss, or not, social categories such as race …

Reassessing The History Of The Poverty Point Phenomenon: A Case Study From The Jaketown Site, Mississippi, Usa, Seth Bradley Grooms

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Towards the end of the Late Archaic period (ca. 4800-3000 cal BP), between 3,600 and 3,300 years ago, Native Americans engineered a colossal earthwork complex that covers approximately 200 hectares in northeast Louisiana. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site known as Poverty Point and the namesake for a material culture pattern documented to varying degrees at sites throughout the Lower Mississippi Valley (LMV). However, the nature of interactions between these sites and the type site is poorly understood. The people who constructed the Poverty Point site lived on wild food resources. They hunted, fished, and gathered food from …

Inferring Adaptation In Social Microbes From Experimental Evolution Under Relaxed Selection, Tyler John Larsen Dec 2022

Inferring Adaptation In Social Microbes From Experimental Evolution Under Relaxed Selection, Tyler John Larsen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Microbes exist against a backdrop of other organisms, and the interactions between microbes have major consequences on their traits, their evolution, and their impact on the world. Microbial interactions and the adaptations that enable them are extremely diverse – they can unlock abilities beyond the reach of individual cells or lead to a population’s destruction, they can be temporary or permanent, they can be between genetically identical cells or different species entirely. The first chapter of this dissertation reviews microbial interactions and the related concept of the evolution of conflict and cooperation. To be certain a trait is an adaptation at …

Insights Into The Non-Osmoregulatory Function Of A Pollen-Specific Mechanosensitive Ion Channel, Kari Miller Dec 2022

Insights Into The Non-Osmoregulatory Function Of A Pollen-Specific Mechanosensitive Ion Channel, Kari Miller

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Pollen, the male gametophyte of flowering plants, delivers the sperm cells to the ovule to carry out sexual reproduction. During this process, the pollen grain undergoes dramatic physical changes. Survival requires careful control of cell mechanics, particularly the balance between protoplast expansion and cell wall resistance. One control mechanism is the use of a mechanosensitive (MS) ion channel, MscS-Like (MSL)8. This pollen-specific protein was previously shown to be essential for pollen survival during hydration and was proposed to function as a tension-gated osmoregulator. However, direct proof of osmoregulation during initial hydration has not yet been found. In fact, studies of …

Emerging Insights Into A Role For Topoisomerase Iib And Methyl-Cpg Binding Protein 2 In Regulating Neuronal Transcription, Sabin Nettles Dec 2022

Emerging Insights Into A Role For Topoisomerase Iib And Methyl-Cpg Binding Protein 2 In Regulating Neuronal Transcription, Sabin Nettles

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The mammalian brain has unparalleled diversity of cell types with distinct molecular, morphological, connectional and functional properties. The specialization of these cells occurs during development through a series of spatially and temporally controlled changes in gene expression that are critical for proper assembly and function. Neurons in particular have complex and elaborate gene regulatory systems which allow specific combinations of genes to be expressed at distinct levels and at discrete developmental stages, giving rise to heterogenous neuronal subtypes. Identifying unique neuronal gene regulatory factors that contribute to the dynamic changes in gene expression are critical to understanding the molecular mechanism …

Canonical And Noncanonical Mechanisms Of Resistance To Arginine Starvation In Cancer, Leonard Christopher Rogers Dec 2022

Canonical And Noncanonical Mechanisms Of Resistance To Arginine Starvation In Cancer, Leonard Christopher Rogers

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The enzyme argininosuccinate synthetase 1 (ASS1) catalyzes the condensation of citrulline and aspartate into argininosuccinate as part of the urea cycle and citrulline-nitric oxide cycle. This reaction is essential for mammals to synthesize the amino acid arginine, which is required for all cells. Nearly all human tissues express at least some ASS1, but they import most of their arginine from the extracellular space after it is produced and released by the kidneys. Most solid tumors lack a functional level of ASS1, including over 85% of sarcomas, which are cancers of connective tissues. Published evidence suggests that this provides a proliferation …

A Universal Mechanism Of G Protein Inhibition, Tyson Daniel Todd Dec 2022

A Universal Mechanism Of G Protein Inhibition, Tyson Daniel Todd

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

G protein coupled receptors transduce a truly staggering number of diverse extracellular signals including chemical messengers, physical force, and even photons into specific cellular responses through their coupling to heterotrimeric G proteins. G proteins amplify the originating signal through their binding to downstream effectors, activating a complex network of overlapping responses that allow the cell to respond perfectly to that specific stimulus. It is critical to the cell that this process is carried out faithfully in order to respond to the myriad environmental cues and avoid injury, exhaustion, and death for the individual cell or the development of pathology if …

Analyzing The Interconnectedness Of The Human Genome, Nicholas Jacobs Dec 2022

Analyzing The Interconnectedness Of The Human Genome, Nicholas Jacobs

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The human genome is much more interconnected than many people realize. In this thesis, I will outline two efforts to portray this idea. First, I will seek to display that cell fitness is an omniphenotype. That is to say, cell fitness can be used to determine whether an unknown factor interacts with a known factor for any phenotype. The human genome is sufficiently interconnected that if two factors interact with one another then that can be reflected by a multiplicative change in cell fitness. This change in fitness can be used to determine if a new factor of interest is …

Interpersonal Emotion Regulation In Current And Remitted Major Depressive Disorder: An Experience Sampling Study, Yunjing Liu Dec 2022

Interpersonal Emotion Regulation In Current And Remitted Major Depressive Disorder: An Experience Sampling Study, Yunjing Liu

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) have difficulties regulating emotion on their own. As people also turn to others for help with emotion regulation (i.e., interpersonal emotion regulation [IER]), we examined whether these difficulties extend to IER in current and remitted MDD. We generally expected individuals with current MDD (and remitted MDD to a lesser extent) to utilize IER in distinct ways compared to those with no history of psychiatric disorders (i.e., controls) due to differences in emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal functioning. Using experience sampling, adults with current MDD (n=48), remitted MDD (n=80), and controls (n=87) reported on how frequently …

Contributions Of Specific Retinal Circuits And Their Respective Projections To Visual Behaviors, Jenna Mackenzie Krizan Dec 2022

Contributions Of Specific Retinal Circuits And Their Respective Projections To Visual Behaviors, Jenna Mackenzie Krizan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The survival of a species is inextricably linked to its ability to successfully navigate and interact with its surroundings, whether to seek safety from predators or gain sustenance from prey. Both functions are performed by mice, guided by vision, and rely on intricate processing in the retina and subcortical targets in the brain. This dissertation addresses how specific features of the visual environment and specific retinal ganglion cell circuits that sample a particular space in the visual environment are used to guide efficient predation in mice.Recent studies have begun to link the ability to detect, track, and ultimately capture prey …

The Role Of The Neurodevelopmental Disorder Gene Myt1l In Mammalian Brain Development, Jiayang Chen Dec 2022

The Role Of The Neurodevelopmental Disorder Gene Myt1l In Mammalian Brain Development, Jiayang Chen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Recent human genetic studies have associated mutations in a gene called Myelin Transcription Factor 1 Like (MYT1L) with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Patients with MYT1L loss of function (LoF) mutations (MYT1L Syndrome patients) demonstrate shared symptoms such as microcephaly, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obesity. Despite prior studies showing MYT1L overexpression facilitates neuronal differentiation in vitro, its functions in vivo, especially in the mammalian brain, and how its mutation leads to human disease pathology remains poorly understood. Here, I established the first mouse model of MYT1L Syndrome mimicking a patient specific LoF mutation. I found mice with Myt1l heterozygous …

Modernism As Public Art: Reawakening The Social Agency Of Abstract Public Sculpture, 1950–1980, Tola Porter Dec 2022

Modernism As Public Art: Reawakening The Social Agency Of Abstract Public Sculpture, 1950–1980, Tola Porter

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a critical reassessment of postwar modern public sculpture and offers a framework for both the reevaluation and reawakening of these significant, inherited public images. Between 1950 and 1980, as a result of new national policies, the United Kingdom and the United States experienced a boom in public sculpture. That phenomenon was augmented by architectural modernism, whose stark buildings called for the addition of sculpture. The growing prestige of abstract art made it a popular choice for architects and commissioners, who sought to leverage the cachet of contemporary artists. For both private sector architects and public sector patrons, …

Functionalized Plasmonic Nanostructures For Ultrasensitive Single Cell Analysis, Priya Rathi Dec 2022

Functionalized Plasmonic Nanostructures For Ultrasensitive Single Cell Analysis, Priya Rathi

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Ultrasensitive detection and quantification of soluble, secreted and cell surface-bound proteins is critical for advancing our understanding of cellular systems, enabling effective drug development, novel therapies, and bio-diagnostics. However, exiting technologies are largely limited by their sensitivity, making the detection and quantification of low-abundant proteins extremely challenging. This forms a major barrier in various fields of biology and biomedical sciences. In this work, we introduce novel cellular analysis methodologies based on plasmon-enhanced fluorescence for analyzing cell structure and probing surface and secreted proteins from cells. In the first part, we introduce plasmon-enhanced expansion microscopy and demonstrate the effectiveness of employing …

Candles In Babylon: Denise Levertov's Spiritual Journey, Nadia Ali Ismael Dec 2022

Candles In Babylon: Denise Levertov's Spiritual Journey, Nadia Ali Ismael

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Through all her work, Denise Levertov’s (1923-1997) penchant for describing religious issues is evident. Various religious images punctuate her work, an indication of either her deep conviction of the existence of a supreme deity, or just a mere description of the wonders of the metaphysical world. But even though her works are punctuated with these religious emblems, Candles of Babylon seems to have taken a new trajectory. There is an admission to the effect that she is on a spiritual odyssey; she gives a clear description of how she makes this journey. Like John Bunyan’s Pilgrims’ Progress (1678), she described …

Characterizing Complex Affective Processing Across Age And In Relation To Social Anxiety Symptoms, M. Catalina Camacho Dec 2022

Characterizing Complex Affective Processing Across Age And In Relation To Social Anxiety Symptoms, M. Catalina Camacho

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Humans require a shared understanding of others’ emotions for adaptive social functioning. For instance, if someone tells a joke and another person laughs, we assume the laughing person was happy because we have a shared concept for such positive interactions. Children develop and refine these concepts as they grow up, but the underlying neural processing that supports this development is unknown. Identifying the neurodevelopment underlying emotion processing could provide important insight to emotional disorders. For example, social anxiety is associated differences in the detection and interpretation of negative or neutral emotional cues, but the underlying neurodevelopment of this behavior is …

Fructose Promotes The Growth Of Tumors Through Metabolite Exchange With Non-Malignant Tissues, Ronald Joseph Fowle-Grider Dec 2022

Fructose Promotes The Growth Of Tumors Through Metabolite Exchange With Non-Malignant Tissues, Ronald Joseph Fowle-Grider

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The amount of dietary fructose consumed in the United States has increased considerably over the past five decades, largely due to the widespread use of high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener. The potential link between this elevated fructose intake and the development of cancer remains incompletely understood. Here we show that, even though cervical cancer cells themselves cannot directly utilize fructose carbon, diets high in fructose enhance the growth of cervical tumors by nearly threefold in mice. We demonstrate that efficient utilization of fructose carbon requires ketohexokinase-C, which was not expressed in ~100 cervical tumors that we examined from …

Tissue Resident Macrophages Drive Fibrosis During Pancreas Inflammatory Injury And Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, John Baer Dec 2022

Tissue Resident Macrophages Drive Fibrosis During Pancreas Inflammatory Injury And Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, John Baer

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The immune system, and especially macrophages, are central in responding to infections, as well as providing a wide array of functions in other pathologies, especially in responding to inflammation. It is established that macrophages will accumulate within tissues during inflammation, many times secreting cytokines and chemokines central to the inflammatory response. This is particularly true during pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, where it has been shown that macrophages and monocytes accumulate in the pancreas to have various roles in further promoting inflammation. It is not well established, however, whether there are divergent roles for the distinct macrophage subsets that …

Drawing From The Past, Pengpeng Chen Dec 2022

Drawing From The Past, Pengpeng Chen

Theses

Drawing From the Past is a short, 3D animated film that portrays the different thoughts about drawing between two generations and is based on my personal experience. Some art students get less encouragement from their families than other students. In Asian traditional thinking, majoring in art was not the correct career direction, which is correct in that period, because of the economy. Majoring in art means students need to pay more money than other majors. In addition, art is not necessary for some people who worry about food. In the previous period, many people worry about their lives. That means …

Listening To First Generation College Students In Engineering: Implications For Libraries & Information Literacy, Emily Dommermuth, Linds W. Roberts

Communications in Information Literacy

First-generation college students (FGCS) in engineering bring a wealth of knowledge to their academic and social experiences in higher education, in contrast to deficit-based narratives that students are underprepared. By listening to FGCS’ own experiences navigating higher education and using information literacy in their project-based work, librarians and educators can better understand students’ funds of knowledge, social capital, and identities, as well as the institutional barriers that must be removed. This paper shares interview findings with (n = 11) FGCS and suggests implications for professional practice that are relevant to information literacy for design, project-based, or practitioner focused disciplines.

Instruction Librarians’ Perceptions Of The Faculty–Librarian Relationship, Lisa Becksford Dec 2022

Instruction Librarians’ Perceptions Of The Faculty–Librarian Relationship, Lisa Becksford

Communications in Information Literacy

This study investigates instruction librarians’ perceptions of their relationships with teaching faculty. Respondents to a survey of U.S. instruction librarians indicated that they tended to agree that their teaching was valued and they had autonomy in what they taught. However, the often one-time nature of library instruction limited their effectiveness as teachers, and respondents felt that faculty did not view librarians’ teaching as equivalent to their own. Respondents also reported a disconnect between their professional identities and others’ viewpoints, describing having their teaching role minimized or misunderstood by others, especially faculty. Additionally, a relationship was found between some aspects of …
