On The Margins Of The Usis Archive In South Asia: Histories Of Media And Politics, Layli Uddin, Lotte Hoek Jan 2022

On The Margins Of The Usis Archive In South Asia: Histories Of Media And Politics, Layli Uddin, Lotte Hoek

The Journal of e-Media Studies

To explore the archive of the USIS in South Asia frequently means stumbling across a USIS officer, film screening, or library book on the margins of an archive dedicated to other institutions, histories, or principles. The USIS rarely appears in South Asian professional repositories or personal collections as a primary focus. Instead, when we, a political historian (Uddin) and a media anthropologist (Hoek), encounter the USIS in archives in South Asia, it appears to us in a different guise than in the archives created by and for the USIS in North America, and mostly part of explorations not centrally focused …

The Imaginal Lexicon Of Aging Studies, William Ebenstein Jan 2022

The Imaginal Lexicon Of Aging Studies, William Ebenstein

Publications and Research

Aging Studies focuses on the cultural, humanistic and experiential aspects of aging insofar as these are already embedded in literature, art, language and everyday life. The lexicon of this multi-disciplinary field has evolved in response to shifts in cultural attitudes, social roles, and conceptual frameworks. At the same time, many age-related words have links to poetic imagery and ancient myths, and to evocative etymologies that conjure an historical context. The article looks at the ongoing and surprisingly difficult effort to find the right word to call an older person. It reviews the language and literary genres associated with longevity. And, …

Social Connectedness For Women’S Empowerment: Development Program Proposal To Support Asian America Pacific Islanders (Aapi) Refugee And Immigrant Women In Denver/Aurora, Colorado., Rattana Rode Jan 2022

Social Connectedness For Women’S Empowerment: Development Program Proposal To Support Asian America Pacific Islanders (Aapi) Refugee And Immigrant Women In Denver/Aurora, Colorado., Rattana Rode

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This paper studies and proposes methods of empowering newly-arrived Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) refugee and immigrant women throughout the integration process by increasing social connectedness. I propose a combination of mentorship model with social activities and mini educational workshops to provide necessary support service for these marginalized groups. The program I developed will focus mainly on newly-arrived female refugees and immigrants and those who are identified as homebound. The mentorship model focuses on matching a small group of mentees to mentors who are long-termed residents in the local community. The mentorship model can assist with attaining knowledge of …

The Visualities And Aesthetics Of Prosecuting Aged Defendants, Mark Drumbl, Caroline Fournet Jan 2022

The Visualities And Aesthetics Of Prosecuting Aged Defendants, Mark Drumbl, Caroline Fournet

Scholarly Articles

The prosecution—whether domestic or international—of international crimes and atrocities may implicate extremely aged defendants. Much has been written about the legalisms that inhere (or not) in trying these barely alive individuals. Very little however has been written about the aesthetics the barely alive encrust into the architecture of courtrooms, the optics these defendants suffuse into the trial process, and the expressive value of punishing them. This is what we seek to do in this project.

Ekpen-N'Owa: Conceptualizing The Human-Animal Relationship In The Benin Peoples' Worldview, Itohan Idumwonyi Jan 2022

Ekpen-N'Owa: Conceptualizing The Human-Animal Relationship In The Benin Peoples' Worldview, Itohan Idumwonyi

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

Animals are prominently ubiquitous in the Benin peoples' cosmologies. These philosophies associate animals with the transformation of the primordial chaos into a livable world, human beings, and the supernatural. In this context, specific animals are used in religious rituals to express the concepts of authority, supremacy, and nobility. Metaphorically speaking, the Oba (monarch) who rules over other monarchs is an Ekpen (leopard). Ekpen is an integral part of Benin's worldview and recurrently compares the Oba (ekpen-n'owa, the house-leopard personified) with the ekpenn'oha (wild leopard). Yet, studies in African Religion undermine the symbolic representation of the Oba as ekpen-n'owa. This article …

Beyond A Dance: The Resonance Of Ugie Ekaba As God's Conduit To "Play" With Humans, Itohan Idumwonyi

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

Scholars map Benin’s (City, kingdom in present-day southern Nigeria) historical contours with its monarchy and royal arts as the subject of rich literature (Paula, G. Ben-Amos 1999, 178; Okpewho, Isidore 1998). Yet, the trajectory to advance Benin’s cultural history and arts is at the expense of the less acknowledged, under-represented, and under-studied aspect of the Benin people who live beyond the capital. This scholarly neglect does not promote the understanding and appreciation of the people’s religious tradition. Fascinatingly, these people constitute and share in the (city) kingdom’s language (dialect), culture, and religion. This qualitative research is interdisciplinary and primarily descriptive, …

Perceptions Of Emotional Functionality: Similarities And Differences Among Dignity, Face, And Honor Cultures, Angela T. Maitner, Jamie Decoster, Per A. Andersson, Kimmo Eriksson, Adam W. Stivers Jan 2022

Perceptions Of Emotional Functionality: Similarities And Differences Among Dignity, Face, And Honor Cultures, Angela T. Maitner, Jamie Decoster, Per A. Andersson, Kimmo Eriksson, Adam W. Stivers

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Emotions are linked to wide sets of action tendencies, and it can be difficult to predict which specific action tendency will be motivated or indulged in response to individual experiences of emotion. Building on a functional perspective of emotion, we investigate whether anger and shame connect to different behavioral intentions in dignity, face, and honor cultures. Using simple animations that showed perpetrators taking resources from victims, we conducted two studies across eleven countries investigating the extent to which participants expected victims to feel anger and shame, how they thought victims should respond to such violations, and how expectations of emotions …

Anti-Abortion Crisis Pregnancy Centers In Central Florida, Isabel Adamus Jan 2022

Anti-Abortion Crisis Pregnancy Centers In Central Florida, Isabel Adamus

Honors Program Theses

Anti-abortion pregnancy centers, also known as crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs), are nonprofit organizations that target pregnant women and aim to dissuade them from considering abortion. In the U.S., CPCs are increasing in prevalence, accumulating government/state funding and support, and becoming more medicalized. Medicalization includes offering limited medical services, such as pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, and testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). CPCs are largely unlicensed and unregulated, frequently advertising in misleading ways and providing inaccurate health information. The goal of this research is to (1) understand how CPCs in Central Florida utilize rhetorical strategies to frame their services and health …

No. 84: Small-Town Xenophobia And Migrant Anxieties In South Africa’S Limpopo Province, Godfrey Tawodzera, Jonathan Crush Jan 2022

No. 84: Small-Town Xenophobia And Migrant Anxieties In South Africa’S Limpopo Province, Godfrey Tawodzera, Jonathan Crush

Southern African Migration Programme

South Africa’s major cities are regularly wracked by large-scale xenophobic violence directed at migrants and refugees from other countries. Informal-sector businesses and their migrant owners and employees are particularly vulnerable targets during these attacks. Migrant-owned businesses are also frequently targeted in smallerscale looting and destruction of property. There is now a large literature on the characteristics and causes of xenophobic violence and attitudes in South Africa, based on quantitative and qualitative research in the country’s major metropolitan areas. One of the consequences of big-city xenophobia has been a search for alternative markets and safer spaces by migrants, including relocating to …

When The Social Networks And Internet Come To The Rescue Of Entrepreneurs: The Problematic Of Crowdfunding In Africa, Omenguele Rene Guy, Mbouolang Yimpi Cedric

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Since 2007, crowdfunding platforms have abounded on the web. It is estimated at 2.5 billion dollars the potential of the crowdfunding market in sub-Saharan Africa by 2025. It appears from the economic and socio-cultural realities that Africa is a region with more potential catalyst for crowdfunding industry takeoff. However, there are many factors which are presented in this study as potential inhibitors of African CF market competiveness. This study has …

The Effects Of Poverty On The Reading Achievement And Vocabulary Development Of Students In Economically Disadvantaged Elementary Schools, Melissa (Mitz) Dawn Stephens Jan 2022

The Effects Of Poverty On The Reading Achievement And Vocabulary Development Of Students In Economically Disadvantaged Elementary Schools, Melissa (Mitz) Dawn Stephens

SSRC Publications

This study focuses on the impact of poverty on student achievement in reading and the vocabulary development of students in rural elementary schools. It provides research through the literature review on the impact administrator and teacher leadership has on poverty as it relates to student achievement. The United Nations Development Programme (2020), reported that people are multi-dimensionally poor, experiencing deprivation in health, education, and living standards. The only way to combat poverty is through education (World Vision, 2021). Because of the challenges poverty induces in today’s educational system, there is a greater demand for higher standards and a more diverse …

On The Other Side Of The Tracks: Hannibal Square And Eatonville In The Interwar Years, Margaret Stewart Jan 2022

On The Other Side Of The Tracks: Hannibal Square And Eatonville In The Interwar Years, Margaret Stewart

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this study is to add nuance to the understanding of the Great Migration period, not only as a period of migration of North to South. The lives and migration of African Americans living in Hannibal Square and Eatonville highlight that African Americans were not just moving North. The Great Migration became more than a simple movement; it was a complex tapestry of African Americans moving where they felt the best opportunities were. This examination will stand within the bound of the early Great Migration period, from 1920 to 1940. The growth of each community will be analyzed …
