Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
The physicochemical changes during the storage of high protein powders, such as skim milk powder (SMP), nonfat dry milk (NDM), and milk protein concentrates (MPC), can result in a variation in the functional properties of the powders. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the storage of various milk powders (SMP, NDM, MPC40, and MPC70) on their functional properties. Three different lots of the powders were collected from US manufacturers and were analyzed for functional properties after 3, 9, and 15 months of storage at 25 °C. Additionally, this study also evaluated the effects of seasonal …
Prosocial Antitrust, Amelia Miazad
Prosocial Antitrust, Amelia Miazad
UC Law Journal
Antitrust law is at the center of today’s public debate. It has even emerged as a rare unifying force, with bipartisan promises to combat the concentration of economic power. Meanwhile, the business community is grappling with mounting systematic risks arising from climate change, income inequality, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Unexpectedly, the largest asset managers in the world find themselves on the front lines of these battles. Due to the rise of index investing, these “universal owners” manage portfolios that are so large and diversified, their holdings mirror the entire economy. Their diversification protects them against idiosyncratic risk, but greatly exposes …

Investigating Granulopoiesis Of Neutrophils From Myeloblasts In The Bone Marrow Post Novel Anti-Schistosoma Compound Treatment, Sarah Alsuleiman, Paul Davis
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Schistosomiasis, a commonly neglected tropical disease, is a waterborne parasitic worm infection able to infect through direct skin penetration. This disease affects approximately 270 million people worldwide and ranks only second to malaria as a leading infectious disease. Although some possible alternatives are emerging, currently, the most effective drug treatment is praziquantel (PZQ). However, PZQ is only effective against the adult stage of the worm, allowing juvenile worms to progress in the infection. Additionally, Schistosoma worms are developing resistance to this drug as reduced efficacy has been noted. Thus, the need for drug discovery and testing is increased. SA01, a …

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Drug discovery is the process of discovering new candidate medications. New drugs are continually developed by pharmaceutical industries to address increasing medical needs. Drug discovery involves a series of processes including target identification and validation, hit identification, lead generation and optimization, and finally the identification of a candidate for further development. The development further includes optimization of chemical synthesis and its formulation, toxicological studies in animals, clinical trials, and eventually regulatory approval. Both of these processes are time-consuming and cost-expensive. Computer-aided drug discovery mainly relies on modern computers to model drug molecules, which can speed up the process of drug …

Cyborgs And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Lou Colasanti
Cyborgs And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Lou Colasanti
Student Scholarship
Medical technology is advancing at lightning speed with the potential to drastically benefit the disabled. These new technologies will result in humans who will use a wide array of assistive technologies and will likely be labelled as Cyborgs. Assistive technologies such as self-driving cars, robots, computer chip implants, insertable medical hardware, and exoskeletons are already well developed. The day is rapidly approaching when Cyborgs as a class will be large and influential. Critically, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the judges tasked with enforcing this legislation, and the legislature itself are all ill equipped to handle the speed of this …

Social Work Theses - Archive
Objective: This review aims to assess the extent of the literature on robotic pet use among older adults receivinghospice or palliative care. Introduction: In 2015, in the U.S, an estimated 1,426,00 individuals received hospice; among this population, 94.6% were aged 65 or older (National Center for Health Statistics,2019). According to the literature, a social robot is defined as something that interacts with individuals socio-emotionally during the intervention (Hudson et al., 2020). Social robots, including robotic pets, are promising technological interventions that can benefit the psychosocial health of older adults and people with dementia. Although there are previous reviews on robotic …
Reactive Motion Planning Of Autonomous Vehicles In 3-Dimensional Environments Using Collision And Rendezvous Cones, Kashish Dhal
Reactive Motion Planning Of Autonomous Vehicles In 3-Dimensional Environments Using Collision And Rendezvous Cones, Kashish Dhal
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation presents a collision cone/rendezvous cone-based approach for reactive motion planning in three-dimensional dynamic environments. Collision avoidance is fundamental to robot motion planning. In dynamic environments, the path and velocities of obstacles are not known a-priori, and hence it is a common practice to use reactive planners. Reactive planners should be computationally inexpensive because they need to act fast to avoid potential collisions. To reduce the computational load, a majority of motion planning algorithms model the shapes of the robots and obstacles as a circle/sphere. However, when the objects are elongated more in one direction than another, the spherical …

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Hand analysis using vision systems is necessary for interaction between people and digital devices and thus is crucial in many applications relating to computer vision and human computer interaction (HCI). The proposed dissertation will explore hand analysis from depth images along two lines: hand part segmentation and 3D hand pose estimation. First, we investigate hand part segmentation from depth images, which is formulated as a semantic segmentation task. We explore a method aimed at determining for every pixel what hand part it belongs to. This method attempts to perform this task without requiring the ground-truth segmentation labels for training. It …

An Intimate Relationship: Medical Theory, The Environment, And Hospitals, Devin Williams
History Theses - Archive
Prior to the full acceptance of bacteriology in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, medicine relied heavily upon the natural environment and cultivating flora from various regions around the world to implement in therapeutics. As a result of various medical theories and practices during the long nineteenth century the hospital became the physical embodiment of such practices and became modified as these medical theories advanced toward an acceptance of bacteriology. Initially serving as a marker for the boundary between the built and natural environments, hospitals also relied heavily upon the natural environment in the treatment of patients and became …
Niche And Dispersal Effects On Biodiversity, Community Composition And Species Co-Occurrences In Stream Ecosystems, Joseph Leonardo Mruzek
Niche And Dispersal Effects On Biodiversity, Community Composition And Species Co-Occurrences In Stream Ecosystems, Joseph Leonardo Mruzek
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Niche and dispersal processes are major ecological drivers of freshwater communities but their relative roles across latitudinal gradients, scales, and organismal groups are not well understood. Thus, we performed three studies with sub-continental datasets of stream algae, insects, and fish. In chapter 2 we predicted that: i) niche processes would dominate at high latitudes due to increased climatic stress, consistent with the physiological tolerance hypothesis and the Dobzhansky-MacArthur hypothesis and ii) dispersal limitation would prevail at low latitudes due to narrower niches and smaller range sizes, consistent with the dispersal-ecological specialization tradeoff hypothesis, the latitude-niche breadth hypothesis, and Rapoport’s rule. …
Investigating The Short-Term And Long-Term Impact Of Covid-19 On Cardiovascular Health, Damsara Nandadeva
Investigating The Short-Term And Long-Term Impact Of Covid-19 On Cardiovascular Health, Damsara Nandadeva
Kinesiology Dissertations - Archive
Recent data indicates that the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) is augmented following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Moreover, emerging data indicates that almost 50% of individuals who had COVID-19 experience persisting symptoms which are often debilitating, beyond the acute phase of the illness. This condition that is given the diagnosis post-acute sequalae of COVID-19 (PASC), also appears to be associated with cardiovascular complications. However, it is unclear what factors contribute to CVD risk following COVID-19 and PASC. Accordingly, the aim of this dissertation was to investigate potential factors that may contribute to adverse cardiovascular outcomes following COVID-19 with a …
Immune Variation Through Mhc Gene Analysis Of The Mourning Gecko (Lepidodactylus Lugubris), Elizabeth Rose Weeresinghe
Immune Variation Through Mhc Gene Analysis Of The Mourning Gecko (Lepidodactylus Lugubris), Elizabeth Rose Weeresinghe
2022 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
A Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a cell-surface molecule encoded by a large gene family in all vertebrate DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The MHC determines susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. These genes are highly polymorphic, meaning that in a non-endogamic population, each organism has a unique set of MHC genes and molecules. Evolution of the MHC through polymorphism ensures a population will not succumb to a new or mutated pathogen, because some individuals will develop an adequate immune response to defeat the pathogen. Because of this, finding MHC genes in transcriptomes is important for finding genetic variability in the immune systems of …
The Combined Benefits Of Dispositional Mindfulness And Trait Self-Compassion As Potential Buffers Of The Effects Of Perceived Stress On Sleep Quality In College-Aged Young Adults., Jackie Ma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using a nonclinical sample of 108 undergraduates between the ages of 18 to 25 years old, this cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between dispositional mindfulness (as measured by the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire; Baer et al., 2006) and sleep quality (as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; Buysse et al., 1989). Second, it evaluated the association between trait self-compassion (as measured by the Self-Compassion Scale; Neff, 2003b) and sleep quality. Third, it aimed to test for an interaction effect between dispositional mindfulness and trait self-compassion as buffers against the adverse effects of perceived stress on sleep quality. Results showed …

Classifying The 2022 Status Of Tsuga Canadensis (Eastern Hemlock) Along The Kentucky Portion Of The Pine Mountain Wildlands Corridor., Grace M. Embree
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The invasion of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) (Adelges tsugae) has posed a continual threat in the United States to the Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) trees since the 1950s. HWA feed on eastern hemlock needles, reducing the amount of healthy photosynthesizing vegetative area. The use of satellite imagery has been instrumental in identifying areas of eastern hemlock presence. Satellite platforms like Landsat and AVIRIS are commonly used for identification, classification, and mapping of eastern hemlock. Sentinel-2 imagery was released in 2015 for free access. It has a finer spatial grain of with the majority of the …

Sustain Water Conservation Behaviors Using Nonparametric Ranking And Social Marketing, Mahmudur Rahman Aveek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Circulation of water use feedback and conservation messaging are strategies implemented to reduce water demand on a short-term (seasonal) basis. Often considered a less impactful strategy than other tactics such as price increments and usage restrictions, authorities mostly use feedback in informational campaigns with a focus to apprise users about their water use. Such conservation programs have had limited success that has been attributed to the fact that the information provided with the feedback campaigns was generic and did not motivate users enough to sustain their water-saving behaviors. However, the advent of disaggregation technologies that can provide appliance-wise water use …

Nanoparticles (NPs) are particles less than 100 nm (~4 millionths of an inch) in a direction. NPs, due to their small size, are used in a variety of products, such as silver (Ag) NPs as an antimicrobial in clothes. Copper Oxide (CuO) NPs are used in electronics as semiconductors and other fields as antimicrobials and purposefully or accidentally end up in the environment. Copper (Cu) is a necessary nutrient for plants, but at higher amounts is toxic to plants and beneficial soil microbes.
In order to understand how the CuO NPs interacts with plants, wheat seedlings were grown in sand …

Spatial-Temporal Responses Of Cow Elk To Targeted And Non-Targeted Hunting Risk, Randall Mcbride
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Predation is one of the most important interspecies interactions that affect a wildlife population. Predator-prey interactions may cause species to shift their behavior, such as changing the use of their habitat in both space and time, based on their ability to assess risk. Wildlife population responses to predation stresses have been studied in the past, but individuals' responses to these stresses have not been studied in fine detail. For this study, cow elk were collared with GPS collars, and hunters carried hand-held GPS units. GPS locations were taken at 10-minute intervals for both cow elk and hunters during the hunting …

Translating Particulate Hexavalent Chromium-Induced Chromosome Instability From Human Lung Cells To Experimental Animals, Human Lung Tumors And Whale Cells., Haiyan Lu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer is a major human health problem. While smoking is the most well-known cause of lung cancer, people who never smoked develop the disease. Understanding how non-tobacco environmental carcinogens cause lung cancer is key to combating this disease. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a well-established human lung carcinogen, but its carcinogenic mechanism is uncertain. Chromosome instability (CIN) is a hallmark of lung cancer and a major factor in Cr(VI)-induced lung cancer. Studies in human lung cells show Cr(VI) induces DNA double strand breaks and suppresses homologous recombination (HR) repair by targeting RAD51, resulting in CIN. We translated these outcomes to …

Targeting Pathological Changes In The Gut Protects The Cns From Neuropathology., Benjamin Tyler Charpentier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is growing evidence that the health of the gut microbiome (GM) has an important role on multiple host organ systems. Ethanol-related neuropathologies and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) currently have no effective clinical treatment. Therefore, we developed a novel mouse model of fecal matter transplantation (FMT) utilizing the microbiome from alcoholic hepatitis (AH) patients, characterized by a loss of butyrogenic potential. Minimal neuroinflammation occurred in AH-FMT mice, but significant increases in the endoplasmic reticulum stress response (ERSR) across the majority of neurons in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus were observed. In the cerebellum, Purkinje cells were specifically affected. Targeting the loss …

Characterization Of Microbotryum Lychnidis-Dioicae Secreted Effector Proteins That Manipulate Its Host Plant, Silene Latifolia., Ming-Chang Tsai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The smut fungal species Microbotryum lychnidis-dioicae is an obligate phytopathogen colonizing the plant host, Silene latifolia. A significant feature of M. lychnidis-dioicae infection is that the fungus can replace pollen on the anthers of susceptible host plants with fungal teliospores, thus earning the fungus the name: anther smut disease of flowers. The fungus synthesizes and secretes effector proteins into the cells of the plant host during infection, and the protein-protein interactions may interfere with and modify metabolism, plant development, and gene expression of the host to allow fungal colonization. Two potential fungal effector proteins, MVLG_06175 and MVLG_05122, were identified …

Background: Penile prosthesis (PP) is a gold standard for treatment of erectile dysfunction given its reliability and efficacy. Infection remains the most feared complication of prosthetic surgery, which usually results in device removal, and places a significant economic burden on the healthcare system. While biofilms have shown to support the persistence of microorganisms, the degree by which this matrix is truly pathogenic remains unknown given its high prevalence even in asymptomatic patients. We aim to review and summarize the current literature pertaining to biofilm formation in the setting of PP surgeries in clinically infected and non-infected cases.
