New Records Of Free-Living Microturbellarians From The Chillón River, Peru, Jhoe Reyes, Ruperto Severino, Francisco Brusa

Neotropical Biodiversity

Microturbellarians are all mostly small free-living Platyhelminthes that do not belong to either the Polycladida or Tricladida order. This group includes species of the clades Catenulida and Rhabditophora. Species of microturbellarians are known to live in marine and continental waters such as rivers, where they are diverse and abundant. However, there are few records of microturbellarians in most of the rivers of the Pacific slope of Peru. Here, we report eight species of microturbellarians from the Chillón River, in the central region of Peru. Of the total species recorded, five (Gieysztoria cuspidata, G. bellis, Myostenostomum vanderlandi, Stenostomum tuberculosum and S. …

A New Neotropical And Southernmost Distributional Record Of Freshwater Sponge Dosilia Radiospiculata (Mills, 1888) (Porifera: Demospongie: Spongillidae) From Honduras, Monshie Briceño, Julio E. Mérida, Anthonie Andino-Mazariegos, Gustavo A. Cruz

Neotropical Biodiversity

We added a new record of a freshwater sponge at the family level from Honduras. The presence of the Dosilia genus in Central America was confirmed, extending its distribution by 890 linear miles south of Mexico. This constitutes a new southern range extension of D. radiospiculata from the Nearctic to Neotropical region. The specimen was collected from the Pacific slope of Honduras. Although sponges constitute an important element of a freshwater ecosystem, environmental pressures and contamination of rivers or other aquatic environments, where they exist, have not been considered under any category of protection.

Neotropical Biodiversity

The deviation of expected relationships between taxonomic (TD), phylogenetic (PD), and functional (FD) diversity may inform about some processes (speciation, extinction, competition, and migration) responsible for current biodiversity patterns. We studied the relationship between different dimensions of bird diversity (TD, PD, and FD) of the Yucatan Peninsula (YP) in a context of future climate change. We used ecological niche models to predict the current and future potential distribution of 257 bird species of the YP and estimate their TD, PD, and FD. We calculated a standardized effect size of PD (SES.PD) and FD (SES.FD) to provide an estimation of phylogenetic …

A Novel Biomaterial Platform For Cardiac Tissue Engineering, Andrew House

Dissertations

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world. With a growing demand for in vitro cardiac models that can recapitulate the complex physiology of the cardiac tissue, there is a desire to create novel therapies and treatments. However, due to a lack of fundamental understanding of the heart's inflammatory response to myocardial infarction, the development of new therapies is both time consuming and costly. In this work, a novel approach to fabricating a dynamic hydrogel cardiac platform is reported. This platform better mimics the dynamic changes occurring in the native cardiac tissue microenvironment during cardiac …

Design And Implementation Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Simulation Model, Mbazingwa Mkiramweni

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving procedure that can multiply a person's chances of survival after a cardiac arrest. The effectiveness of CPR procedures is heavily influenced by the individual skills of the rescuer providing assistance. Chest compressions delivered at an appropriate depth and rate, allowing full chest recoil and with minimal interruptions, are critical for improving cardiac arrest survival. The lack of quality CPR training models in developing countries has a significant impact on the quality of CPR training and skills acquired. Therefore, in this paper, we aim at improving CPR training by designing a high-fidelity CPR training manikin. …

Angiogenic Supports For Microvascular Engineering, Zain Siddiqui Dec 2022

Angiogenic Supports For Microvascular Engineering, Zain Siddiqui

Dissertations

Ischemic tissue disease is caused by a lack of circulation / blood supply to tissue. This can be treated by introducing a number of angiogenic (pro-blood vessel forming) factors into the tissue. This work presents strategies for ischemic tissue treatment utilizing a novel proangiogenic self-assembling peptide hydrogel platform. To demonstrate the utility of this platform, its use alone as an angiogenic therapeutic (both alone as a self-assembling hydrogel and with two-component systems), and its ability to vascularize implants is explored. Due to these angiogenic scaffolds demonstrating efficacy to regenerate microvasculature, this work evaluates diseases that can be treated by the …

Performance Evaluation Of 1-Hexadecyl-3- Methylimidazolium Bromide, Lauryl Glucoside And Decane In Creating Winsor Type-Iii Microemulsion, Abang Muhamad Luqman Arif Abang Norden, Sia Chee Wee

Platform: A Journal of Engineering (PAJE)

While ionic liquids are usually high in cost, only small amounts are needed to establish their beneficial characteristics combined with the utilization of a cosurfactant. A cationic surface-active ionic liquid, 1-hexadecyl-3- methylimidazolium bromide (C16mimBr) was chosen as the main surfactant because it is non-volatile, non-flammable, and able to withstand high temperature. However, it was studied that this ionic liquid poses a major threat to the aquatic environment, thus another surfactant is needed as a cosurfactant. Lauryl glucoside was used as the cosurfactant because it is environmentally friendly, has low toxicity and excellent biodegradability. The potential of this surfactant mixture for …

Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion Of Bio-Waste And Biogas Utilization Technologies: A Review, Louis Kon Wei Yii, Ho Yeek Chia, Tee Jia Jun

Platform: A Journal of Engineering (PAJE)

In this modern era, more individuals have concluded that utilising biogas as a significant energy source is necessary for considering the depletion of fossil fuels and rising concerns about ecological problems, including environmental pollution. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion (AD) of bio-waste helps to produce more biogas for future uses. However, several significant AD parameters are to be considered, impacting the sludge properties, such as the temperature, pH, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and mixing systems. One of the most important operational parameters influencing the thermophilic AD process is the temperature, which only occurs between 45°C and 60°C. With that, biogas utilisation has …

Effects Of Beaver Dams On Stream And Riparian Conditions On Public Lands In The United States’ Inland Northwest, Brett B. Roper Dec 2022

Effects Of Beaver Dams On Stream And Riparian Conditions On Public Lands In The United States’ Inland Northwest, Brett B. Roper

Western North American Naturalist

A before-after control-impact (BACI) design was used to simultaneously evaluate how stream habitat, macroinvertebrate communities, stream temperatures, and riparian conditions responded to beavers building dams within a stream reach. Summarized conditions describing beaver-dammed and undammed stream reaches suggested that 13 of the 18 evaluated metrics differed. After accounting for beavers’ selection of lower-gradient stream reaches with less forested cover, the number of stream and riparian metrics that differed significantly dropped to 5. Beaver dams increased pool area and depth, despite failing to increase the frequency of wood >10 cm in diameter. This suggests that beavers build dams utilizing pieces of …

A Conserved Oxalyl-Coenzyme A Decarboxylase In Oxalate Catabolism, Ninghui Cheng, Vincent Paris, Xiaolan Rao, Xiaoqiang Wang, Paul A Nakata

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

The ability to biosynthesize oxalic acid can provide beneficial functions to plants; however, uncontrolled or prolonged exposure to this strong organic acid results in multiple physiological problems. Such problems include a disruption of membrane integrity, mitochondrial function, metal chelation, and free radical formation. Recent work suggests that a CoA-dependent pathway of oxalate catabolism plays a critical role in regulating tissue oxalate concentrations in plants. Although this CoA-dependent pathway of oxalate catabolism is important, large gaps in our knowledge of the enzymes catalyzing each step remain. Evidence that an oxalyl-CoA decarboxylase (OXC) catalyzes the second step in this pathway, accelerating the …

Macroinvertebrates’ Response To Different Land Use In Lowland Streams From Uruguay: Use Of Artificial Substrates For Biomonitoring, Bárbara Suárez, Margenny Barrios, Franco Teixeira De Mello

Neotropical Biodiversity

The use of macroinvertebrates as indicators of water quality is an effective and low-cost tool, which is widely implemented in biomonitoring programmes. Certain taxa are characteristic of impaired watercourses (e.g. Oligochaeta, Chironomidae and Amphipoda), while others are characteristic of good-quality watercourses (e.g. Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera; EPT). In this work, we evaluated the response of the macroinvertebrate assemblages to different land uses. For this purpose, artificial substrate colonization experiments were conducted in streams including urban (U, n = 3), intensive agriculture and dairy production (AD, n = 4) and extensive cattle ranching (CR, n = 4) land uses. Because in …

Does Bergmann’S Rule Apply In Bats? Evidence From Two Neotropical Species, Dennis Castillo-Figueroa

Neotropical Biodiversity

Bergmann’s rule is one of the most vigorously debated ecogeographic patterns but has rarely been examined in Neotropical bats. Herein, I examined Bergmann’s rule in Carollia perspicillata and Artibeus lituratus along an elevation gradient of 2500 m at both inter- and intraspecific level. I measured 384 specimens from collections belonged to C. perspicillata (89 ♀, 102 ♂) and A. lituratus (89 ♀, 104 ♂). The size of C. perspicillata increased with increasing elevation and decreasing temperature, whereas A. lituratus showed the converse pattern. For both species, females did not differ between elevation categories, contrary to males that were larger above …

Neotropical Biodiversity

Tlaloc hildebrandi is a small (<130 mm) freshwater fish endemic to Southwest Mexico and is listed as endangered through habitat loss and invasive species. We determine and compare the parameters of the length–weight relationship, relative weight, and condition factor among different populations of the endemic killifish, T. hildebrandi. Fulton’s condition factor (K), relative weight (Wr), and the length–weight relationship were estimated for three killifish populations throughout its distribution range in the highlands of Chiapas, México. The Wr was significantly lowest in fishes where there are higher anthropogenic activities. The somatic indexes and the length–weight relationships for T. hildebrandi are hereby published for the first time in both the scientific literature and databases, such as Fishbase.

Influence Of Predator Density In Foraging Behavior And Microhabitat Choice On Litter-Dwelling Scorpions, Vinicius B. Pessoa, Geraldo J. B. Moura, André F. A. Lira

Neotropical Biodiversity

The presence of a predator can cause behavioral changes in its prey, such as decreased foraging activity. Previous studies have indicated that the scorpion Ananteris mauryi has the ability to identify the chemical traces of its intraguild predator Tityus pusillus, causing it to reduce its exploratory activity. In this study, the foraging activities of A. mauryi in a natural environment with different densities of T. pusillus were compared. The study was carried out through active searches from 19:00 to 22:00 in five fragments of the Atlantic Forest in Pernambuco, Brazil, one having a low density of T. pusillus and four …
