Faith Development In Eighth-Grade Christian Students Studying Creation-Theory-Based Science: A Phenomenological Study, Stephen Matthew Lowe
Faith Development In Eighth-Grade Christian Students Studying Creation-Theory-Based Science: A Phenomenological Study, Stephen Matthew Lowe
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived faith development experiences of eighth-grade Christian students following a creation-theory-based curriculum at a Northern Michigan Christian school. The 12 male and female students who participated were aged 13–14 years and self-identified as Christian. The study setting was a small Christian middle school in Northern Michigan. Researchers have thoroughly investigated many aspects of faith development but had not addressed the faith development of eighth-grade Christian students following a creation-theory-based curriculum. The theoretical framework underlying the study was Fowler’s faith development theory. Data were triangulated from semistructured interviews, focus groups, …

Exploration Of How Unified Theory Of Acceptance And Use Of Technology Enhances Trust In Communication, Samantha M. Ricciardi
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The qualitative study aims to understand the central phenomenon of how trust enhances communication with online grocery shopping for participants who are 25 years and older and are active online grocery shoppers. Venkatesh, Morris, and Davis created a technology acceptance model called Unified created Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, which explains the acceptance and use of information systems and communication technology innovations with consumers (Kim et al., 2008; Phillippi et al., 2021). The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology is an alternative theoretical model that ties into eight existing user acceptance models: (a) Technology Acceptance Model …
The Impact Of Kinesthetic Movement On Flute Performance Musicality And Performance Anxiety In Undergraduate University Flute Students, Regina Helcher Yost
The Impact Of Kinesthetic Movement On Flute Performance Musicality And Performance Anxiety In Undergraduate University Flute Students, Regina Helcher Yost
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Kinesthetic movement has gained significant attention within the flute community over the last several decades as a performance enhancement tool. Somatic therapies such as the Alexander Technique, body mapping, Feldenkrais, and Dalcroze-Eurythmics incorporate kinesthetic movements into their practices. Although most musicians seek out these therapies solely to alleviate pain or injury, could these kinesthetic movements promote concentration and provide positive self-talk by decreasing mental distractions? Despite much research analyzing the impact of kinesthetic movements on reducing injury and pain, there is a lack of research explicitly regarding its abilities to enrich a flutist’s musical performances by reducing negative self-talk. This …

The sample population included minority students enrolled in a government class attending a community college in an urban area in South Florida. There were N = …
720-960 Steps: A Historical Review Of Contemporary Techniques And Pedagogies And How They Revolutionized Pageantry For The Modern Marching Band, Stanley K. Holloway
720-960 Steps: A Historical Review Of Contemporary Techniques And Pedagogies And How They Revolutionized Pageantry For The Modern Marching Band, Stanley K. Holloway
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There is a need for new and innovative marching band techniques in the music field, and most band directors have limited capacity to instill these concepts. Texts from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s concentrated primarily on these concepts and techniques. Gradually, a comprehensive show concept became standard practice. Examination of the existing literature does not reveal a need for more research. Still, some literature demonstrates a need for new and innovative band techniques for marching band, particularly in band pageantry. Although these materials help create a foundation for marching band concepts and have proven effective. They are dated and do …
The Watercooler Is Safer Than The Schoolyard: Lower Courts Dismissal Of Peer Sexual Harassment Under Title Ix Is Especially Failing Our Students In The “#Metoo” World, Christine Tamer
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
While the term #MeToo was first coined in 2006, the movement came to the forefront of American life in October 2017 when actress Alyssa Milano tweeted, “if you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet.” Since then, the #MeToo movement has exposed the fact that sexual harassment remains all too common and has pushed for change in the legal procedures that have failed victims. In the #MeToo world, sexual harassment is “finally getting the public attention it has long deserved” and the public has come together to deem it—in one word—unacceptable.

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
This case report is a 31-year-old man with Angle’s class I malocclusion (ANB: 1;wits: -3mm ) , upper and lower anterior crowding, missing lower right second premolar, and ankylosis of lower right first molar (beneath occlusal plane 7 mm). Orthodontic treatment consisted of extraction of #15 (upper right second premolar), and two buccal tipping maxillary third molars ( #18 & #28). A modified corticotomy was performed by the oral surgeon for the ankylosed molar (#46), and a miniscrew was inserted in the upper right first molar #16 region as anchorage. Via this way, we did upright the ankylosis molar and …
Intrusion Of Supra-Erupted Maxillary Molars Using Miniscrews– Literature Review, Hsin-Ho Chen, Yu-Kun Chih
Intrusion Of Supra-Erupted Maxillary Molars Using Miniscrews– Literature Review, Hsin-Ho Chen, Yu-Kun Chih
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Overextrusion of maxillary molars usually results from early loss of antagonistic teeth due to caries or periodontitis. Conventional techniques for molar intrusion was used multiple teeth and extraoral devices, that depended highly on patient’s cooperation and usually result in extrusion of other teeth rather than posterior intrusion. This article reviews treatment consideration, force mechanics and side effects about miniscrews for intrusion of upper molars. We also present a clinical case to confirm miniscrew treat supra-erupted upper molars successfully.

The Possibility Of Acceleration In Orthodontic Tooth Movement, Yu-Jia Liou, Ellen Wen-Ching Ko, Eric Jein-Wein Liou, Betty Chien-Jung Pai
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
In recent times, orthodontic treatment has attained significant interest and momentum. It has become more acceptable and admirable as a prime modality of treatment that not only enhances the facial esthetics but also can improve the function of the orofacial structures, than ever before. However, the layperson perceives it to be a treatment modality which consumes drastically longer period of time. Recent research pertaining to faster orthodontic tooth movement has dwelled in to this overwhelming area of reduced and more efficient treatment time. This review article specifically deals with such modalities of treatment which could elicit shorter treatment period than …

Orthodontic Molar Uprighting - Literature Review, Hsin-Yi Hsieh, Wen-Ching Ko, Chiung-Shing Huang
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Tipped molar is a relatively common occurrence in adult dentition. The objective in orthodontic molar uprighting is ideal positioning of the molar which will eventually become an abutment tooth for a fixed prothesis. The ideal position will improve the periodontal environment for the molar. The benefits provided by molar uprignting are: abutment preparations are simplified; pontic design is improved; reduced mesial periodontal infra-bony defect and so on. In present review article, several appliances and techniques are described for uprighting molars.
The Effects Of Prescribed Fire On Ant-Mediated Seed Dispersal In Missouri, Eva M. Colberg
The Effects Of Prescribed Fire On Ant-Mediated Seed Dispersal In Missouri, Eva M. Colberg
Dissertations
Many aspects of animal-mediated seed dispersal are vulnerable to disturbance, including partner identity and dispersal quantity and quality. This dissertation explores ant-mediated seed dispersal of the herb Sanguinaria canadensis in Missouri Ozark oak forests, where prescribed fire is a common land management tool. In Chapter 1, I test the definition of a keystone seed disperser using absolute and relative contributions of different ant species to the quantity and distance of seed dispersal, based on field observations of S. canadensis seed dispersal. I demonstrate that the ant Aphaenogaster rudis is better described as a numerically dominant rather than keystone seed disperser, …

Developmental Basis Of Evolutionary Lung Loss In Plethodontid Salamanders, Zachary R. Lewis, Ryan R. Kerney, James Hanken
Developmental Basis Of Evolutionary Lung Loss In Plethodontid Salamanders, Zachary R. Lewis, Ryan R. Kerney, James Hanken
Biology Faculty Publications
One or more members of four living amphibian clades have independently dispensed with pulmonary respiration and lack lungs, but little is known of the developmental basis of lung loss in any taxon. We use morphological, molecular, and experimental approaches to examine the Plethodontidae, a dominant family of salamanders, all of which are lungless as adults. We confirm an early anecdotal report that plethodontids complete early stages of lung morphogenesis: Transient embryonic lung primordia form but regress by apoptosis before hatching. Initiation of pulmonary development coincides with expression of the lung-specification gene Wnt2b in adjacent mesoderm, and the lung rudiment expresses …

Predator–prey interactions have long served as models for the investigation of adaptation and fitness in natural environments. Anti-predator defences such as mimicry and camouflage provide some of the best examples of evolution. Predators, in turn, have evolved sensory systems, cognitive abilities and physiological resistance to prey defences. In contrast to prey defences which have been reviewed extensively, the evolution of predator counter-strategies has received less attention. To gain a comprehensive view of how prey defences can influence the evolution of predator counter-strategies, it is essential to investigate how and when selection can operate. In this review we evaluate how predators …

Hillslopes cover much of the Earth's surface, and mass movement is one of the main ways hillslopes re-adjust their profiles in response to the changing climate. Over the next few decades, the impacts of climate changes on mass movements are predicted to be pronounced at high latitudes where temperatures are warming rapidly, permafrost is thawing, and precipitation is increasing. More frequent mass movements have the potential to threaten critical infrastructure in Interior Alaska, particularly in areas of steep slopes and discontinuous permafrost like the Alaska Range. With these concerns in mind, I investigated the dynamics of a complex landslide that …

Despite therapeutic advancements, oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) remains a difficult disease to treat. Systemic platinum-based chemotherapy often leads to dose-limiting toxicity (DLT), affecting quality of life. PRV111 is a nanotechnology-based system for local delivery of cisplatin loaded chitosan particles, that penetrate tumor tissue and lymphatic channels while avoiding systemic circulation and toxicity. Here we evaluate PRV111 using animal models of oral cancer, followed by a clinical trial in patients with OCSCC. In vivo, PRV111 results in elevated cisplatin retention in tumors and negligible systemic levels, compared to the intravenous, intraperitoneal or intratumoral delivery. Furthermore, PRV111 produces robust anti-tumor …

This editorial addresses the universality and importance of the science of perception. In particular, recently published studies in this journal illustrate the natural variations in perception. These articles are a reminder of perception as a natural process with inherent variations and that any two individuals are not guaranteed to form the same representation of an object, regardless of whether it originates from the senses or not. Since perception is a foundation for higher cognition, it also has an immense influence on studies of humanity and interpretations of natural processes.

Peatlands at high latitudes have accumulated >400 Pg carbon (C) because saturated soil and cold temperatures suppress C decomposition. This substantial amount of C in Arctic and Boreal peatlands is potentially subject to increased decomposition if the water table (WT) decreases due to climate change, including permafrost thaw-related drying. Here, we optimize a version of the Organizing Carbon and Hydrology In Dynamic Ecosystems model (ORCHIDEE-PCH4) using site-specific observations to investigate changes in CO and CH fluxes as well as C stock responses to an experimentally manipulated decrease of WT at six northern peatlands. The unmanipulated control peatlands, with the WT …

Background: Frequent dieting is common in athletes attempting to achieve a body composition perceived to improve performance. Excessive dieting may indicate disordered eating (DE) behaviors and can result in clinical eating disorders. However, the current nutrition patterns that underly dieting culture are underexplored in endurance athletes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the sex differences in nutrition patterns among a group of endurance athletes.
Methods: Two-hundred and thirty-one endurance athletes (females = 124) completed a questionnaire regarding their dieting patterns and associated variables.
Results: The majority of athletes did not follow a planned diet …

This article analyzes important developments in Contract Law stemming from consideration by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2020-2021. Due to the large number of Contracts cases during this period, the article focuses on prominent appeals occupied with issues of fairness in Canadian Contract Law. Fairness in contracts emerges as an important concern of the SCC at this juncture. This appropriately reflects the constellation of some long-unsolved problems (e.g., control of unfair terms in standard form contracts), confusion around key concepts associated with protection of contractual fairness (e.g., unconscionability and good faith), and judicial disagreement over the merits of general …
Predicting Stream Attractiveness To Stray Hatchery-Origin Chum Salmon To Aid In Understanding Salmon Dispersal And Informing Hatchery Management, Molly K. Payne
Predicting Stream Attractiveness To Stray Hatchery-Origin Chum Salmon To Aid In Understanding Salmon Dispersal And Informing Hatchery Management, Molly K. Payne
Fisheries
Understanding the processes underlying dispersal propensity in animal populations is a fundamental goal of ecologists. In metapopulations of wild Pacific (Oncorhynchus spp) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, hereafter collectively referred to as "salmon"), it is recognized that dispersal, or straying, exists in tandem with philopatry and provides benefits such as gene flow and colonization of new habitat. However, straying by hatchery-produced salmon into streams can negatively affect the genetic integrity and reproductive success of wild salmon populations. Straying by hatchery-origin salmon may also confound fishery management procedures around assessing wild spawner escapement, given the difficulty in identifying hatchery salmon in …

Intraspecific Variation And The Leaping Ability Of Northern Pike (Esox Lucius): Implications For Invasion Ecology And Management, Taylor L. Cubbage
Fisheries
Although biological invasions are a leading threat to global biodiversity they provide opportunities to study factors that mediate invasion success from ecological and evolutionary perspectives and inform management efforts. The invasion of Northern Pike (Esox lucius) throughout southcentral Alaska has provided a useful case study, where invasive Northern Pike may benefit relative to native individuals due to high habitat suitability, abundant fish prey, and adaptive or plastic selective forces of invasion. Northern Pike continue to spread throughout the highly interconnected river and lake systems of southcentral Alaska; however, hypothesized differences in Northern Pike and native salmonid leaping abilities make selective …
Evaluating The Viability Of The Use Of Two Tag Types On Prespawn Arctic Lamprey, Mary C. Spanos
Evaluating The Viability Of The Use Of Two Tag Types On Prespawn Arctic Lamprey, Mary C. Spanos
Fisheries
Arctic Lamprey Lethenteron camtschaticum are harvested by subsistence and commercial fisheries in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region of Alaska; however, there is little to no baseline population data available for this species. For mark-recapture and telemetry studies to be effectively utilized to collect information on Arctic Lamprey abundance, migratory and dispersal patterns, and spawning locations, the tags and transmitters used must not impact fish survival, physiology, or behavior. For this laboratory evaluation, survival, incision healing, tag retention, changes in body size, and short- (24 hours) and long-term (43 days) swim endurance were examined for prespawn Arctic Lamprey (N = 216) collected from …
Physiological Regulation Of Annual Life History Events In Adult Female Weddell Seals, Amy Lorraine Kirkham
Physiological Regulation Of Annual Life History Events In Adult Female Weddell Seals, Amy Lorraine Kirkham
Fisheries
Predicting the impacts of environmental changes on animal populations requires a comprehensive understanding of the life history and physiological ecology of organisms in the wild, including the precise timing and regulation of annual biological events. In this dissertation, I assess how intrinsic factors including serum hormone concentrations and nutritional status relate to the critical annual events of reproduction, seasonal foraging, and pelage molt in an Antarctic marine predator, the Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii). A large component of these assessments are comparisons between female Weddell seals that pupped in the current season (postpartum females) and females that have pupped in the …

Dynamic Energy Budget Models: Fertile Ground For Understanding Resource Allocation In Plants In A Changing World, Sabrina E. Russo, Glenn Ledder, Erik B. Muller, Roger M. Nisbet
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Climate change is having dramatic effects on the diversity and distribution of species. Many of these effects are mediated by how an organism’s physiological patterns of resource allocation translate into fitness through effects on growth, survival and reproduction. Empirically, resource allocation is challenging to measure directly and so has often been approached using mathematical models, such as Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models. The fact that all plants require a very similar set of exogenous resources, namely light, water and nutrients, integrates well with the DEB framework in which a small number of variables and processes linked through pathways represent an …
Human-Polar Bear Interactions On The Northern Coast Of Alaska, Gwendolyn Quigley
Human-Polar Bear Interactions On The Northern Coast Of Alaska, Gwendolyn Quigley
Biological Sciences
Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are sea ice-dependent marine mammals that, due to reductions in sea ice extent in the southern Beaufort Sea, are increasing their time spent on shore. Simultaneously, the anthropogenic footprint on the northern coast of Alaska is growing. As a result, human-polar bear interactions in this region are increasing. These interactions have the potential to be dangerous for humans, harmful to polar bears, and, therefore, require deliberate management. In this thesis, I examined two study systems that lacked the depth of knowledge necessary to craft defensible management plans. My research generated information regarding human-polar bear interactions that …
