Effects Of Environmental Warming On Clarias Gariepinus Growth And Physiology, Dean Cahill
Effects Of Environmental Warming On Clarias Gariepinus Growth And Physiology, Dean Cahill
Capstone Showcase
Fresh water makes up about 0.8% of the Earth’s surface and is home to six percent of its species. Environmental warming is projected to have a significant effect on freshwater systems as the century progresses. They are susceptible to irreversible damage because fresh water availability and temperature is dependent of climate. The Clarias gariepinus, or the African Catfish, is popular among aquaculture in Africa and Asia because of its rapid growth, quick reproduction, and hardiness. The goal of my thesis was to examine the effect of environmental warming and elevated temperatures on the growth and physiology of Clarias gariepinus populations …
Recolonization Of Microbiomes’ Influence On Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hattie Cole
Recolonization Of Microbiomes’ Influence On Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hattie Cole
Capstone Showcase
In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of studies conducted on the complications of gastrointestinal (GI) comorbidities associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children. Some of these GI issues include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea and constipation. The causes of these disorders are poorly understood. The dominant gut phyla are Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria and Verrucomicrobia. Research conducted on children with ASD compared with typical developing (TD) children showed higher ratios of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes in the ASD group. Biflobacterium, Actinobacteria phyla, has been shown to be a good intestinal bacterium that may help with …
Bodily Autonomy And Anti-Vaccine Discourse During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Haley Sherman
Bodily Autonomy And Anti-Vaccine Discourse During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Haley Sherman
Capstone Showcase
This paper explores the relationship between anti-vaccine discourse and ideas about bodily autonomy. I analyze the cyclical nature of vaccine hesitancy and show that it can lead to misinformation and harmful narratives. This paper uses theories of bodily autonomy that identify a concept called moral obligation. This concept, as explored by Alberto Giubilini, is a utilitarian approach in which citizens have a responsibility to their governments to get vaccinated so that, in turn, their governments can fulfill their obligation of protecting other individuals’ health (Giubilini 2020, 54). A discourse analysis of four key players in the anti-vax movement shows that …
The Outcomes Of Cemented Versus Cementless Total Knee Arthroplasty In Modern Day Patients With Osteoarthritis, Jordan Powelson
The Outcomes Of Cemented Versus Cementless Total Knee Arthroplasty In Modern Day Patients With Osteoarthritis, Jordan Powelson
Capstone Showcase
Osteoarthritis (OA), the degeneration of cartilage and bone, is the most progressive musculoskeletal disease and a leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting over 27 million adults. Although conservative treatments for knee OA are available, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the only definitive treatment for end-stage knee OA. For the past several decades, the use of bone cement has been the gold standard for total knee arthroplasty, but the cementless TKA is being revisited as an option as the age of patients seeking TKA decreases and the average BMI increases. This review analyzes and compares the outcomes of …

Federalism By Deception: The Implied Limits On Congressional Power, Fair, Bryan K.
Federalism By Deception: The Implied Limits On Congressional Power, Fair, Bryan K.
Santa Clara Law Review
The purpose of this Article is to lay bare federalism by deception and the theory of implied limits on federal power. Other scholars have recently noted the rise of anti-federalist viewpoints in modern cases. I go a step further to demonstrate how Supreme Court Justices have embraced anti-federal ideology, but have cited Federalist sources, including Marshall, to announce unenumerated limits on federal legislative power.
Impact Of Early Life Stress And Cannabidiol On Behavior And Corticosterone Levels In Male And Female Rats, Marina Yacoub
Impact Of Early Life Stress And Cannabidiol On Behavior And Corticosterone Levels In Male And Female Rats, Marina Yacoub
Capstone Showcase
Organisms must maintain homeostasis that is regulated internally and externally. Fluctuation in homeostasis causes stress. Corticosterone, the main stress hormone in rodents, increases following exposure to acute stressors, such as being placed in a restrainer. However, early developmental experiences including maternal separation shape the development of the stress response into adulthood and impact the expression of depressive and anxiety-like behaviors. Many factors can shape the body's response to stress, for example, a rodent's previous exposure to a past stressor can affect their present behavior. Several studies have shown that female rats have lower or no changes in corticosterone levels compared …
The Role Of Pharmacologic Treatment In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Taryn Donnelly
The Role Of Pharmacologic Treatment In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Taryn Donnelly
Capstone Showcase
Behavioral, educational, and family therapies combined with early recognition and intervention is the current standard for management of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Despite these interventions, many children still retain behavioral disturbances that negatively impact their quality of life. Researchers have estimated more than 50% of adolescents with ASD are prescribed medications to help them manage behaviors or comorbid conditions, over half of whom experience psychotropic polypharmacy. Only risperidone and aripiprazole are FDA-approved for ASD patients, although numerous medications are used "off-label" and in combination to treat behavioral disturbances. There is limited research supporting greater therapeutic benefits than side …
Is It Worth It? Evaluating An Open Educational Resources Awards Program, Ashley Sergiadis, Philip Smith
Is It Worth It? Evaluating An Open Educational Resources Awards Program, Ashley Sergiadis, Philip Smith
ETSU Faculty Works
Awards or grant programs are a common way for higher education institutions to incentivize the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) and other affordable course materials. This study evaluates the results of a two-year pilot OER awards program at East Tennessee State University. To assess the awards program, we used data from student savings and program costs, grades, drop-fail-withdrawal (DFW) rates, and survey results compiled within the COUP framework (Cost, Outcomes, Usage, and Perception). The initial monetary return on investment was moderately positive, while the grades and DFW rates remained steady. The faculty and students rated the open and affordable …
Somatechnics And Difference, Johannes Birringer
Somatechnics And Difference, Johannes Birringer
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies
This essay examines embodiment and technology with a special focus on dis/abilities in live performance during the current inter-pandemic era. After several workshops developed with performers and mixed ability artists during 2021, questions are raised about inclusion: how we consider impairment or how disabilities are reconfigured in our understanding. The somatechnics explored here are initially related to Seo Ji Won’s exuberant and excessive motion installation, but also to the practices of other choreographers and designers who acknowledge different abilities and challenges to perception that are not
necessarily all based in a technological understanding of movement. Although it can incorporate digital …
Analysis Of Regulatory Options To Reduce Ethylene Oxide Emissions In Southern Louisiana, Claire Oyler
Analysis Of Regulatory Options To Reduce Ethylene Oxide Emissions In Southern Louisiana, Claire Oyler
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Toxic chemicals are dangerous when exposed directly to humans but are often vital for the production of goods and services. Ethylene Oxide is a carcinogenic gas used as a commercial sterilizer and emitted during the manufacturing process of common household goods. The term fence-line communities describes the residents living adjacent to facilities emitting toxic chemicals into the air. Several predominately minority, low-income fence-line communities in Southern Louisiana are exposed to higher than average levels of Ethylene Oxide from nearby manufacturing facilities. This raises environmental justice and overall public health concerns in the area. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is charged …
Los Audiovisuales En Su Función Coadyuvante O Vehicular: Una Aproximación, José Gabriel López Antuñano
Los Audiovisuales En Su Función Coadyuvante O Vehicular: Una Aproximación, José Gabriel López Antuñano
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies
The Impact Of The Saratoga Campaign Of 1777 Upon The Communities Of Upstate New York During The American Revolution, Matthew J. Hamm
The Impact Of The Saratoga Campaign Of 1777 Upon The Communities Of Upstate New York During The American Revolution, Matthew J. Hamm
Theses and Dissertations
From the spring of 1776 to the summer of 1777, there was a looming threat to the northern region of the colony of New York bordering Canada. Across the border, British forces were marshaling for an invasion. Finally, in June of 1777, the inevitable came true; British General John Burgoyne moved south from St. John’s toward Lake Champlain in upstate New York with an army numbering approximately 9,500. This diverse force consisted of British army regulars, hired German troops, Indian allies, Canadian volunteers and loyalists, and a glut of camp followers, who helped support Burgoyne’s army. His aim was to …
Correlation Does Not Imply Correlation: A Thesis On Causal Influence And Simpson’S Paradox, Emily Naitoh
Correlation Does Not Imply Correlation: A Thesis On Causal Influence And Simpson’S Paradox, Emily Naitoh
Scripps Senior Theses
In our data-driven world, it has become commonplace to attempt to find
causal relationships. One of the themes of this thesis is to show methods of
determining causation. The second theme follows a saying in mathematics,
"correlation does not imply causation". We will also discuss situations where
correlation does not even imply correlation itself. These cases are described
by Simpson’s paradox in an exploration of different areas of mathematics
and computer coding.
Painting Colonialism Green: Understanding Colonial Ecology Through The Lens Of Palestinian Art, Lily Hibbard
Painting Colonialism Green: Understanding Colonial Ecology Through The Lens Of Palestinian Art, Lily Hibbard
Scripps Senior Theses
The objective of settler colonialism is, at its core, land domination and the continued subjugation of Indigenous people. I argue that this objective is achieved through four avenues of violence: consumption, extraction, manipulation of space, and severance from identity. By analyzing Palestinian resistance art, I examine the role of landscape manipulation, via destruction or creation of space, in perpetuating these four heralds of colonialism. I specifically focus on the cultural value of trees in occupied Palestine and the Israeli settler community, and the ways in which these trees have become weapons in an ongoing war of colonial design. By understanding …
Seaglass: An Animated Rejection Of Narrative Permanence, Alejandra Louise Blackmore
Seaglass: An Animated Rejection Of Narrative Permanence, Alejandra Louise Blackmore
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis explores how popular narrative structures imply that our reality should be stagnant, thereby leaving us as viewers unprepared for the notion of change. I introduce the term “narrative permanence” as a story structure that assumes the foundations of a narrative are absolute. These stories therefore consider structural change as a threat or abnormal. I analyzed examples such as The Simpsons and news coverage of the BP oil spill to demonstrate how popular media frames change as an unnatural occurrence that must be neutralized. My thesis then culminated in an animated short about a person living in a seaside …
Curarse En Salud: Mexican Curanderos In Mental Health, Angela Molina
Curarse En Salud: Mexican Curanderos In Mental Health, Angela Molina
Scripps Senior Theses
Also known as traditional folk healers, Curanderos’ name stems from the word “curar” which means “to heal” in Spanish. Curanderismo is the practice and Curanderos are the practitioners. Prior research has found there are significant barriers Latinx communities face when seeking mental health care in the U.S. Reasons include institutional barriers such as language, citizenship, and socio-economic status and cultural barriers such as lack of cultural competency by practitioners. Because of the holistic healing nature Curanderismo emphasizes, extensive research has been conducted to understand why these marginalized communities seek Curanderos’ treatment. Culture and psychopathology have a significant relationship because psychiatric …

Toxin Production And Growth Responses Of Freshwater Cyanobacterium Microcoleus Anatoxicus To Salinity, Simone Henry
Toxin Production And Growth Responses Of Freshwater Cyanobacterium Microcoleus Anatoxicus To Salinity, Simone Henry
Scripps Senior Theses
Microcoleus is an anatoxin-producing genus of cyanobacteria found globally. Anatoxin (ATX) is a high potency neuromuscular toxin. Fatalities caused by ingesting ATX- contaminated water, or the ATX-producing algae, have been recorded since the 18th century, but have more recently increased in magnitude and frequency. This experiment is intended as a pilot study to explore how future conditions of the Russian River under increased agricultural and industrial pollution, and climate change might affect the growth and toxin production of M. anatoxicus. M. anatoxicus underwent 12 treatments made up of 3 treatment groups targeting increased salinity and nutrient gradients. The only significant …
Diving Into The Depths Of Consciousness And The Ocean, Eva Polanco Gruszynski
Diving Into The Depths Of Consciousness And The Ocean, Eva Polanco Gruszynski
Scripps Senior Theses
Freediving at its core is holding your breath underwater. But beneath the surface, the body, mind, and spirit undergo a transformation. The mammalian dive response drives the physiological changes that humans undergo while diving to conserve enough oxygen in the body for basic functions to continue to function. The autonomic nervous system synergistically influences the cardiac, pulmonary, and vascular systems and causes apnea, bradycardia, vasoconstriction and splenic emptying to sustain aerobic ATP production in the heart and brain. Additionally, the act of breath holding has many beneficial effects on the mind. Much research has been done on the positive effects …

The Legal Relations Of ‘Private’ Forests: Making And Unmaking Private Forest Lands On Vancouver Island, Estair Van Wagner
The Legal Relations Of ‘Private’ Forests: Making And Unmaking Private Forest Lands On Vancouver Island, Estair Van Wagner
All Papers
While the vast majority of forestlands in Canada are considered ‘Crown land’, there are key areas of private forestland. On private land the incidents of fee simple ownership mean the owner emerges as land use decision maker – the “agenda setter” for the land. Yet a richer set of legal relations exists in these forests.
Indigenous legal orders derived from an enduring relationship with the land and place also govern forestlands. Using the case of the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway lands in British Columbia, this article explores the intersection between historical and contemporary human-forest relations upheld by Anglo-Canadian law and …
Religion, Public Law, And The Refuge Of Formalism, Howard Kislowicz, Benjamin Berger
Religion, Public Law, And The Refuge Of Formalism, Howard Kislowicz, Benjamin Berger
All Papers
In this article we suggest that the encounter with religious legal traditions has surfaced a distinct vein of formalism in Canadian public law, discernable across the Court’s law and religion jurisprudence. This is so despite the centrality of substantive analysis in the account Canadian public law gives of itself. But there are distinct challenges and a particular anxiety that surrounds the law-religion encounter; we argue that the fraught sovereignty and pluralism problems that this encounter presents has led Canadian public law to rediscover its formalist habits and the comfort that they bring.
The Supreme Court of Canada’s decisions in Wall …
The Ai-Copyright Challenge: Tech-Neutrality, Authorship, And The Public Interest, Carys Craig
The Ai-Copyright Challenge: Tech-Neutrality, Authorship, And The Public Interest, Carys Craig
All Papers
Many of copyright’s core concepts—from authorship and ownership to infringement and fair use—are being challenged by the rapid rise of generative AI. Whether in service of creativity or capital, however, copyright law is perfectly capable of absorbing this latest innovation. More interesting than the doctrinal debates that AI provokes, then, is the opportunity it presents to revisit the purposes of the copyright system in the age of AI. After introducing the AI-copyright challenge in Part 1, Part 2 considers the guiding principles and normative objectives that underlie—and so ought to inform—copyright law and its response to AI technologies. It proposes …

Analysis Of Artifacts And Storage Organization: Clinton Lock 2, Hannah Curtis
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
For this project, we are hoping to address the potential problems and help refine future work between the storage in the Cummings Center and the Anthropology Department. Some of the research questions that we have are: What is in the Cummings Center from the Anthropology Department? What type of techniques is the most beneficial in storing archaeological material? How are the items stored in the Cummings Center? Is this method of storage going to protect or damage the artifact? Do we still need to keep this material, returned to its original owner, or can it be deaccessioned? We plan to …

Storage Organization And Analysis Of Artifacts, Rebecca Glatz
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
I worked with the Institute for Human Science and Culture at the Drs. Nicholas & Dorothy Cummings Center for the History of Psychology and Department of Anthropology at the University of Akron to help create an inventory of the collections that are being stored in the storage of the Cummings Center. After I finished the general inventory, I selected a collection of interest to do further research on an item level. The collection was processed and photographed and this paper is a report of what I learned about the collection and a guide of how to process a collection for …
