Impact Of The Maternity Care Changes Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Pregnant Women And Their Birth Partners: An Integrative Literature Review, Rebekah Kemp

Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects

Introduction: In March 2020, the novel coronavirus originating out of Wuhan in China and spreading rapidly worldwide, became known as the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients with pre-existing conditions, such as the elderly and pregnant women, are among those most vulnerable to severe infection due to COVID-19. Increased pulmonary expansion in the respiratory tract make pregnant women more susceptible to viral respiratory infections and exacerbation of illnesses like COVID-19. Another major concern correlated with the pandemic and pregnancy is its effect on pregnant women’s mental health. Unique physiological and psychological changes place pregnant women at an increased risk for experiencing mental health …

The Dynamics Of Tsunamigenic Acoustic-Gravity Waves And Bathymetry Effect, Pavel Alexandrovich Inchin, Christopher James Heale, Jonathan Brian Snively, Matthew David Zettergren

Publications

The investigation of atmospheric tsunamigenic acoustic and gravity wave (TAGW) dynamics, from the ocean surface to the thermosphere, is performed through the numerical computations of the 3D compressible nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations. Tsunami propagation is first simulated using a nonlinear shallow water model, which incorporates instantaneous or temporal evolutions of initial tsunami distributions (ITD). Surface dynamics are then imposed as a boundary condition to excite TAGWs into the atmosphere from the ground level. We perform a case study of a large tsunami associated with the 2011 M9.1 Tohuku-Oki earthquake, and parametric studies with simplified and demonstrative bathymetry and ITD. Our results …

The Ring Quarry Mining Complex: A Preliminary Archaeological Investigation Into Ancient Native American Sites In Northwestern New Jersey, Joseph D. Cusack

Theses and Dissertations

The Ring Quarry Mining Complex (RQMC) in northwestern New Jersey is an archaeological, Pre-Contact Native American mining and habitation complex. The RQMC was a primary source of tool stone in the Vernon Valley of New Jersey for thousands of years. Evidence of human occupation within the study area extends from the Paleoindian through the Contact Period. This study focuses on the ancient chert quarry and surrounding sites across a landscape making up a habitational complex.

How The Readability Level Of Prior Text Impacts Comprehension Of Subsequent Text, Benjamin Jerry Dumont Nov 2022

How The Readability Level Of Prior Text Impacts Comprehension Of Subsequent Text, Benjamin Jerry Dumont

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis research is to explore how the difficulty of text impacts the ability to process subsequent text. The basic idea is that difficult text might deplete cognitive or attentional resources, creating difficulties for readers as they try to continue reading afterwards. A pilot study was conducted to gather preliminary data prior to the two final studies. High (easy to read) and low (difficult to read) readability passages were created and presented prior to a target passage. The results from the pilot study suggested that there may be differences in comprehension based on the readability and difficulty …

The Development Of A Genomic Toolbox For Studying The Evolutionary Genetics Of Reptilian Lungs Using The Chicken Model, Logan Thomas Edvalson Nov 2022

The Development Of A Genomic Toolbox For Studying The Evolutionary Genetics Of Reptilian Lungs Using The Chicken Model, Logan Thomas Edvalson

Theses and Dissertations

There is a vast diversity in tetrapod lung branching morphology. Phylogenetically, much of the pulmonary diversity among vertebrates appears to arise from the way epithelial tubes branch or form saccular (cyst) structures. Fgf10 activity has been shown to play a critical role in regulating branch versus cyst morphology. We hypothesize that the species-specific differences in lung morphology may be primarily due to species-specific differences in Fgf10 expression. To test this hypothesis, we have performed bioinformatic analyses on the Fgf10 locus and have identified a conserved 11 kb noncoding region that potentially contains the Fgf10 lung enhancer. We are taking a …

Von Willebrand Factor (VWF) plays a critical role in thrombus formation, stabilization, and propagation. Previous studies have demonstrated that targeted inhibition of VWF induces thrombolysis when administered in vivo in animal models of ischemic stroke. The study objective was to quantify dose-dependent inhibition of VWF-platelet function and its relationship with thrombolysis using BB-031, an aptamer that binds VWF and inhibits its function. VWF:Ac, VWF:RCo, T-TAS, and ristocetin-induced impedance aggregometry were used to assess BB-031-mediated inhibition of VWF. Reductions in original thrombus surface area and new deposition during administration of treatment were measured in a microfluidic model of arterial thrombolysis. Rotational …

Myostatin Is A Negative Regulator Of Adult Neurogenesis After Spinal Cord Injury In Zebrafish, Vishnu Muraleedharan Saraswathy, Lili Zhou, Anthony R Mcadow, Brooke Burris, Deepika Dogra, Sven Reischauer, Mayssa H Mokalled Nov 2022

Myostatin Is A Negative Regulator Of Adult Neurogenesis After Spinal Cord Injury In Zebrafish, Vishnu Muraleedharan Saraswathy, Lili Zhou, Anthony R Mcadow, Brooke Burris, Deepika Dogra, Sven Reischauer, Mayssa H Mokalled

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Intrinsic and extrinsic inhibition of neuronal regeneration obstruct spinal cord (SC) repair in mammals. In contrast, adult zebrafish achieve functional recovery after complete SC transection. While studies of innate SC regeneration have focused on axon regrowth as a primary repair mechanism, how local adult neurogenesis affects functional recovery is unknown. Here, we uncover dynamic expression of zebrafish myostatin b (mstnb) in a niche of dorsal SC progenitors after injury. mstnb mutants show impaired functional recovery, normal glial and axonal bridging across the lesion, and an increase in the profiles of newborn neurons. Molecularly, neuron differentiation genes are upregulated, while the …

Life Is A Die, Xiangyu Deng

Theses

Life are consist of uncertainty and certainty. The most functional way for people to deal with life is to try their best for certainty and to accept uncertainty. However, due to the consistently changing environment and fast increasing uncertainty, people are more and more unlikely to deal with life and its uncertainty. This project, Life-is-a-die, will express the personal thought to deal with life and release worries and fear through a poetic video. In this video, the designed metaphors, poetic story, sound effects, text, 3d elements, motions, visuals, motion, and textures will play a vital role to help people understand …

Oleuropein Suppresses Endometriosis Progression And Improves The Fertility Of Mice With Endometriosis, Yuri Park, Yeon Jean Cho, Nuri Sung, Mi Jin Park, Xiaoming Guan, William E Gibbons, Bert W O'Malley, Sang Jun Han

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent inflammatory reproductive disease. Therefore, systematic estrogen depletion and anti-inflammatory drugs are the current treatment for endometriosis. However, current endometriosis treatments have low efficacy and cause adverse effects in endometriosis patients. Consequently, alternative endometriosis treatments targeting endometriosis-specific factors are in demand. In this context, ERβ was selected as a druggable target for endometriosis due to its critical role in progression. Therefore, selective targeting of ERβ without inhibiting ERα activity would be a new paradigm for endometriosis treatment to overcome the low efficacy and adverse effects of hormonal endometriosis therapy.

METHODS: Cell-based ERβ and ERα activity assay …

Social Emotional Learning In Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Brittany A. Dale, Kristin Rispoli, Lisa A. Ruble Nov 2022

Social Emotional Learning In Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Brittany A. Dale, Kristin Rispoli, Lisa A. Ruble

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

Interventions for young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often focus on reducing negative behaviors or increasing the frequency of positive behaviors. Little discussion, however, focuses on the underlying mental health and developmental factors or ancillary skill deficits that may be contributing to problem behaviors. With social emotional standards built into the educational system, schools are uniquely positined to provide social emotional support and instruction to students with disabilities, especially children with ASD. Often, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) of preschool and early elementary school children with ASD focus on state academic standards rather than the social-emotional needs often associated with …

Layered Pedagogies Of Instruction And Restorative Justice: A Kindergarten Case Study Of Community And Belonging, Erica Steinitz Holyoke

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

The current climate of education often results in surveillance of outcomes and accountability in early childhood learning and management, especially in schools serving Black, Indigenous, and Children of Color. Historically, classroom management has been about controlling students, the environment, and ultimately what and how learning takes place. In response, centering restorative justice as a humanizing approach to classroom management is necessary to focus on equity. However, this focus can be filled with tensions and conflicting philosophies against the status quo in schools. Likewise, classroom community practices, including punitive and restorative discipline, are typically looked at separately from academic learning, without …

Playing Together: A Call For Multiple Stakeholders To Reduce Exclusionary And Harsh Discipline For Young Bicoc With Disabilities, Saili S. Kulkarni, Sunyoung Kim, Tunette Powell Nov 2022

Playing Together: A Call For Multiple Stakeholders To Reduce Exclusionary And Harsh Discipline For Young Bicoc With Disabilities, Saili S. Kulkarni, Sunyoung Kim, Tunette Powell

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

Punitive disciplinary actions deny Black, Indigenous,2 Children of Color (BICOC) with disabilities from access to meaningful instruction and increase their risks for truancy, dropping out, and incarceration. At the intersection of race, disability, and discipline, this paper is a call to action for research and practices that bring together stakeholders and co-constructed, local solutions to exclusionary disciplinary practices affecting BICOC with disabilities. Specifically, we assert that efforts to reduce disproportionately racist responses to the challenging behaviors of young BICOC with disabilities (birth through age 8) cannot be solved with a single intervention strategy or simplistic approaches. Instead, we highlight the …

Increasing Voter Investment In American Democracy: Proposals For Reform, Adam Drake Nov 2022

Increasing Voter Investment In American Democracy: Proposals For Reform, Adam Drake

Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum

Millions of Americans choose to stay home every election cycle. Polling suggests that these nonvoters are either apathetic with respect to the democratic process or feel alienated from the United States government. Reforms to the democratic system should focus on alleviating these sentiments, ultimately encouraging more voters to show up to the polls. As turnout increases, so too does the legitimacy and stability of the U.S. government.

With that goal in mind, this Article advocates for a five- prong approach to reforming the electoral system. The first proposed step is to eliminate unnecessary barriers to voting by establishing federal automatic …

The Fallacy Of A One Size Fits All Cannabis Policy, Amanda Reiman Nov 2022

The Fallacy Of A One Size Fits All Cannabis Policy, Amanda Reiman

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Although the cannabis plant is one of the oldest herbal products currently in use, the policies and research surrounding its use and associated risks and benefits have been points of contention throughout its modern lifespan. Cannabis has been seen as a revered botanical medicine, a demon substance sure to ruin modern society, and an alternative to Western-born pharmaceutical drugs and treatments. Over time, the debate concerning cannabis has been driven by morality, science, politics, economics and social control. Given its multiple uses (textiles, medicine, and relaxation), developing one policy to encompass these uses in a responsible way remains elusive. This …

Patients And Caregivers Report Using Medical Marijuana To Decrease Prescription Narcotics Use, David C. Peters Ii Nov 2022

Patients And Caregivers Report Using Medical Marijuana To Decrease Prescription Narcotics Use, David C. Peters Ii

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In depth qualitative interview data were collected from medical marijuana patients and knowledgeable producers in Michigan about their perceptions and observations on the medical use of marijuana. Patients consistently reported using marijuana to substitute or wean off prescription drugs. All patients and producers who were taking opiate pain killers claimed they reduced overall drug use, especially opiates, by using medical marijuana. Patients and caregivers also claimed medical marijuana was preferred over opiates, eased withdrawal from opiates, and in some cases was perceived as more effective at relieving pain.

How Porous Are The Walls That Separate Us?: Transformative Service-Learning, Women’S Incarceration, And The Unsettled Self, Coralynn V. Davis, Carol Wayne White Nov 2022

How Porous Are The Walls That Separate Us?: Transformative Service-Learning, Women’S Incarceration, And The Unsettled Self, Coralynn V. Davis, Carol Wayne White

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In this article, we refine a politics of thinking from the margins by exploring a pedagogical model that advances transformative notions of service learning as social justice teaching. Draw- ing on a recent course we taught involving both incarcerated women and traditional college students, we contend that when communication among differentiated and stratified parties occurs, one possible result is not just a view of the other but also a transformation of the self and other. More specifically, we suggest that an engaged feminist praxis of teaching incarcerated women together with college students helps illuminate the porous nature of fixed markers …

A Study Abroad Program In Tanzania: The Evolution Of Social Justice Action Work, Elizabeth M. Cannon, Carmen Heider Nov 2022

A Study Abroad Program In Tanzania: The Evolution Of Social Justice Action Work, Elizabeth M. Cannon, Carmen Heider

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This article focuses on the evolution of our study abroad program to Tanzania, including the integration of three liberal arts disciplines and the foundational core that links together the three areas: social justice activism. More specifically, we explore the overall challenge of dismantling “us versus them” thinking and the interactive learning moments that allow this process to transpire. We narrate how what we learned on our 2008 and our 2010 trips led to our model of social justice action work, which we enacted on our 2012 trip. Our approach to social justice action work integrates experiential learning with Dan Butin’s …

Designing “‘Queer’ Across Cultures:” Disrupting The Consumption Of Diversity, Kim Berry Nov 2022

Designing “‘Queer’ Across Cultures:” Disrupting The Consumption Of Diversity, Kim Berry

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This article charts the underlying logic and structure of a course titled “‘Queer’ Across Cultures,” created to provide a transnational focus for the groundbreaking minor in Multicultural Queer Studies, spearheaded by Eric Rofes. Concerned that students would too easily revert to a practice of consuming diversity, I have attempted to weave together readings which complicate a colonial gaze by challenging hegemonic constructions of essential difference. My primary strategy in crafting this course has been to focus on the term “across” in the title. In other words to foreground and theorize the transnational within the production of both similarities and differences …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Mesopelagic organisms play a crucial role in marine food webs, channelling energy across the predator-prey network and connecting depth strata through their diel vertical migrations. The information available to assess mesopelagic feeding interactions and energy transfer has increased substantially in recent years, owing to the growing interest and research activity in the mesopelagic realm. However, such data have not been systematically collated and are difficult to access, hampering estimation of the contribution of mesopelagic organisms to marine ecosystems. Here we present MesopTroph, a georeferenced database of diet, trophic markers, and energy content of mesopelagic and other marine taxa compiled from …

Epidemiological Aspects Of Equid Herpesvirus-Associated Myeloencephalopathy (Ehm) Outbreaks, Eva Klouth, Yury Zablotski, Jessica L. Petersen, Marco De Bruijin, Gittan Gröndahl, Susanne Müller, Lutz S. Goehring

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

: Equid Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) is a multifactorial disease following an EHV-1 infection in Equidae. We investigated a total of 589 horses on 13 premises in Europe in search of risk factors for the development of EHM. We found that fever (p < 0.001), increasing age (p = 0.032), and female sex (p = 0.042) were risk factors for EHM in a logistic mixed model. Some breeds had a decreased risk to develop EHM compared to others (Shetland and Welsh ponies; p = 0.017; p = 0.031), and fewer EHV-1-vaccinated horses were affected by EHM compared to unvaccinated horses (p = …

Collective Dynamics Support Group Drumming, Reduce Variability, And Stabilize Tempo Drift, Dobromir Dotov, Lana Delasanta, Daniel J. Cameron, Edward W. Large, Laurel Trainor

Journal Articles

Humans are social animals who engage in a variety of collective activities requiring coordinated action. Among these, music is a defining and ancient aspect of human sociality. Human social interaction has largely been addressed in dyadic paradigms, and it is yet to be determined whether the ensuing conclusions generalize to larger groups. Studied more extensively in non-human animal behavior, the presence of multiple agents engaged in the same task space creates different constraints and possibilities than in simpler dyadic interactions. We addressed whether collective dynamics play a role in human circle drumming. The task was to synchronize in a group …
