An Exploration Of Different Motivations Between Stakeholders And Visitors Of The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, Colin Mccormack Dec 2022

An Exploration Of Different Motivations Between Stakeholders And Visitors Of The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, Colin Mccormack

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Visitors have different motivations associated with parks and protected areas, and the people who run those areas are also different from visitors due to their unique positions. This is especially true for the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (POHE), where stakeholders – ranging from park managers and Department of Transportation planners to volunteers of nonprofits and historical societies collaborate to manage sections along the 822-mile extent of the trail. Building on previous work itemizing the diversity of motivations for visitation to parks and protected areas, this study investigates similarities and differences in stakeholder and manager Recreation Experience Preferences by clustering …

Hiding In Plain Sight: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Black Male Educators In School Leadership, Jeryl Kimbrough-Scott Dec 2022

Hiding In Plain Sight: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Black Male Educators In School Leadership, Jeryl Kimbrough-Scott

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

With the changing landscape of America’s K-12 student population becoming a myriad of ethnicities, the importance of diversifying school leadership is critical to reflect the varying groups represented in the student population. Khalifa et al. (2016) and Talbert-Johnson (2006) attest that the development of culturally responsive programs is necessary to address the needs and experiences of a diverse population. Similarly, the premise of teacher preparation programs that are predominantly white and middle class need additional initiatives to better prepare candidates in working with diverse populations (Browne-Ferrigno, 2011; Carpenter & Diem, 2013; Ford et al., 2020; Hampton et al., 2008; Khalifa, …

Integrative Physiology-Coupled Pilot-Centered Flight Simulation, Shawn C. Harrison Dec 2022

Integrative Physiology-Coupled Pilot-Centered Flight Simulation, Shawn C. Harrison

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Maintaining the pilot’s physiological performance envelope within the limits of human capabilities may be crucial for avoiding hazardous physiological episodes in fighter aircraft that compromise safety. The main physiological episode of interest is impaired pilot respiration, better known as hypoxia caused by a high fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at high altitudes and variation in accelerative gravitational forces (g-forces). Integrated into fighter aircraft is an Onboard Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS) developed to mitigate the necessity of gaseous and liquid oxygen cannisters [1]. OBOGS act as a life support in hypoxic environments by providing oxygen-rich air, thereby oxygenating the …

The Role Of Akirin/Nurd Interactions During Heart Development, Mia Jones Nov 2022

The Role Of Akirin/Nurd Interactions During Heart Development, Mia Jones

Symposium of Student Scholars

Congenital heart defects are often identified during pregnancy or infancy and are the most common birth defect presented in humans, affecting blood circulation resultant from small holes in a blood chamber to deformity-inducing missing structures. Recent advancements in medicine have allowed those affected to live healthier, longer lives. Gene combinations and chromosomal changes play pivotal roles in congenital heart defects, but the specific genes involved remain unknown. The Nowak Lab has discovered several novel regulatory proteins that are critical for embryonic heart development and is studying them for a potential link to congenital heart defects.

During embryogenesis, the heart of …

S. B. J. Oschoffa (1909–85): The Miracle Of A Shared Life, Samuel Olamiji Akibu

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

In the twentieth century, God raised many faith giants among Africans for Africans and the whole world. These faith heroes contributed immensely to the decolonization, indigenization, and expansion of Christianity in Africa and the Global South. Among these highly spiritually invested Africans was a Beninese-Nigerian carpenter, Samuel Biléou Joseph Oschoffa (1909–1985). He was educated in the Methodist tradition before the Lord called him to lead one of the most significant African prophetic-charismatic indigenous movements, the Celestial Church of Christ. This article explores his life, ministerial legacies, and theology.

Against These Things There Is No Law: Spirit-Empowered Witness In Secular Uruguay, Rebekah Bled Nov 2022

Against These Things There Is No Law: Spirit-Empowered Witness In Secular Uruguay, Rebekah Bled

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

Uruguay is a country unique in Latin America for its secularism. It secularized early, thoroughly, and publicly, under the leadership of President José Batlle y Ordoñez, at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. A century later, Uruguay still boasts the highest percentage of atheists, agnostics, and nones in the continent. This is a country that seems to defy the sometimes triumphalist narratives of the pentecostalization of the global South. Yet, even amidst this backdrop, there are bright spots of Spirit-empowered witness. This article seeks to examine two of these bright spots of Spirit-empowered hope during …

Architectural Representations Of Human Rights, El-Bastawissi Y. Ibtihal, Youssef Maged Nov 2022

Architectural Representations Of Human Rights, El-Bastawissi Y. Ibtihal, Youssef Maged

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

The United Nations defines the Human Rights as the rights of all human beings, regardless of race, gender, language, religion, nationality, or any other status. These rights include all claims to live freely, to educate and work in equality, and to inhabit humanistic urban and architectural spaces. Throughout the history of architecture, civilisations have generated different perspectives towards respecting the human rights. Temples of Ancient Egyptian Architecture crushed the human scale to introduce religious experiences to their visitors. Tibetan temples over mountains enforced people to make anti-humanistic journeys to reach them. After thousands of years, the mega-scale palaces and cathedrals …

Exploring Perceptions Of Control Within Offender Cognition And Recidivism Paradigms, Anistasha H. Lightning, Danielle Polage Nov 2022

Exploring Perceptions Of Control Within Offender Cognition And Recidivism Paradigms, Anistasha H. Lightning, Danielle Polage

Student Published Works

Elements of perceived control are associated with recidivism in offender populations. We investigated the application of locus of control to the frequency of personal involvement with the law and to beliefs surrounding the likelihood of future contact with the legal system. We hypothesized that, as the number of sentencings or legal experiences increased, locus of control would externalize. We also predicted that increased legal involvement would lead to greater belief in the likelihood of future involvement. A statistically significant path model suggests that locus of control appears to be a predictor of increased criminality, as opposed to the other way …

Designing Vr Games To Improve Engagement With At-Home Physical Therapy, Andrada Pantelimon Nov 2022

Designing Vr Games To Improve Engagement With At-Home Physical Therapy, Andrada Pantelimon

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are the leading cause of disability worldwide. Every year, 50% of American adults over 18 years-old develop an MSK condition that requires physical therapy (PT). However, only about 35% of patients fully adhere to their plans of treatment. As the population ages and telehealth permeates the PT industry, there is a growing need as well as an opportunity to use new and emerging technologies to create immersive interfaces that increase motivation. This thesis explores the potential VR-based gameful experiences to improve engagement and follow-through with at-home physical therapy for ACL injury, a common acute MSK condition that …

Interconnected Precarity: A Contemporary Reframing Of Bodily And Earthly Health In Wendell Berry's The Unsettling Of America: Culture And Agriculture, Abigail Pinegar Nov 2022

Interconnected Precarity: A Contemporary Reframing Of Bodily And Earthly Health In Wendell Berry's The Unsettling Of America: Culture And Agriculture, Abigail Pinegar

Theses and Dissertations

Published in 1977, Wendell Berry's book The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture gained widespread popularity. More than half a century later, many of the notions of the body and the earth presented in its seventh chapter, "The Body and the Earth," remain relevant and important for environmental discourse today. Berry's discussion of the body and the earth examines their mutuality and codependence from an ontological, theological, agricultural, and even biological perspective. The coupling of this text with Judith Butler's, Frames of War: When is Life Grievable? contemporizes his argument through its more socio-political and philosophical claims regarding life and …

Civil Economy And The Inspirational Paradigm For Jesuit Business Education, Jessica Ludescher Imanaka Nov 2022

Civil Economy And The Inspirational Paradigm For Jesuit Business Education, Jessica Ludescher Imanaka

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

The objective of this article is to develop a framework for operationalizing the Inspirational Paradigm for Jesuit Business Education considering the challenges issued by Laudato Si’. This article proposes that the civil economy paradigm should be aligned with the Inspirational Paradigm and presents a framework that bridges these two paradigms. The framework proposed is anchored in the Catholic social tradition. This article starts by discussing the relevant features of the civil economy paradigm as developed by Bruni and Zamagni, emphasizing the business applications of fair trade, solidarity enterprises, and the Economy of Communion. An argument is then constructed to show …

Rethinking Equitable Estoppel In Patent Law, Joshua J. Lustig Nov 2022

Rethinking Equitable Estoppel In Patent Law, Joshua J. Lustig

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

In almost every context, the Federal Circuit has used estoppel doctrines to provide protection to parties from some sort of injustice. Yet recently, with equitable estoppel, the Federal Circuit has decided to infuse concepts of Article III justiciability to justify limiting the doctrine as only applicable to issued patents. In doing so, the Federal Circuit has ignored the long history behind equitable estoppel in favor of a rule that is improperly rationalized by the Constitution. This note argues that Federal Circuit's recent equitable estoppel jurisprudence is inconsistent with equity's goal of fairness and presents a new theory of equitable estoppel …

Spinosaurus Is Not An Aquatic Dinosaur, Paul C. Sereno, Nathan Myhrvold, Donald M. Henderson, Frank E. Fish, Stephanie L. Baumgart, Tyler M. Keillor, Kiersten K. Formoso, Lauren L. Conroy Nov 2022

Spinosaurus Is Not An Aquatic Dinosaur, Paul C. Sereno, Nathan Myhrvold, Donald M. Henderson, Frank E. Fish, Stephanie L. Baumgart, Tyler M. Keillor, Kiersten K. Formoso, Lauren L. Conroy

Biology Faculty Publications

A predominantly fish-eating diet was envisioned for the sail-backed theropod dinosaur Spinosaurus aegyptiacus when its elongate jaws with subconical teeth were unearthed a century ago in Egypt. Recent discovery of the high-spined tail of that skeleton, however, led to a bolder conjecture that S. aegyptiacus was the first fully aquatic dinosaur. The "aquatic hypothesis' posits that S. aegyptiacus was a slow quadruped on land but a capable pursuit predator in coastal waters, powered by an expanded tail. We test these functional claims with skeletal and flesh models of S. aegyptiacus. We assembled a CT- based skeletal reconstruction based on the …

Effective Community Development In Informal Settlements Through Analysis Of The Kibera Slum In Kenya, Chloe Powell Nov 2022

Effective Community Development In Informal Settlements Through Analysis Of The Kibera Slum In Kenya, Chloe Powell

Undergraduate Theses

Many people have a heart for those living in poverty, but very few have a mind for how to fight poverty well, according to Harvard University Professor Michael Fairbanks. The Kibera slums in Kenya is no exception to the plethora of challenges informal settlements face concerning development, including a lack of security of tenure, corruption, an unhealthy business environment, and a lack of jobs. Kibera has been the subject of numerous studies and development efforts throughout the years and has faced a long history of failed government interventions. In 2020, Kenya received almost $4 billion from the U.S. in official …

From Sustainable Finances To Faithful Investing: A Moral Proposal According To The Catholic Social Thought, José L. Fernández-Fernández, Rocío Acedo-Rico Pablo-Romero Nov 2022

From Sustainable Finances To Faithful Investing: A Moral Proposal According To The Catholic Social Thought, José L. Fernández-Fernández, Rocío Acedo-Rico Pablo-Romero

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Finance is an element of economic life that can contribute to shaping a more humane, equitable and sustainable world; and finance oriented by reference to ESG criteria represents an encouraging step forward at the service of the Common Good. In this article we contrast finance from ESG criteria with Faithful Investing, more specifically, with the tradition of Catholic Social Thought (CST) and its criteria for ethical, responsible, and sustainable investing decisions. Therefore, we try to go beyond, opening a path towards a more explicit way of acting in financial markets from a moral option rooted in religion: Faithful Investing. The …

Genome Protection By Dna Polymerase Θ, Richard D Wood, Sylvie Doublié Nov 2022

Genome Protection By Dna Polymerase Θ, Richard D Wood, Sylvie Doublié

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

DNA polymerase θ (Pol θ) is a DNA repair enzyme widely conserved in animals and plants. Pol θ uses short DNA sequence homologies to initiate repair of double-strand breaks by theta-mediated end joining. The DNA polymerase domain of Pol θ is at the C terminus and is connected to an N-terminal DNA helicase-like domain by a central linker. Pol θ is crucial for maintenance of damaged genomes during development, protects DNA against extensive deletions, and limits loss of heterozygosity. The cost of using Pol θ for genome protection is that a few nucleotides are usually deleted or added at the …
