The Disconnect Between Knowledge And Perceptions: A Study Of Fishermen’S Local Ecological Knowledge And Their Perception Of The State Of Fisheries And How These Are Managed In The Dominican Republic, Elizabeth Layli Mclean, Graham E. Forrester, Carlos G. Garcia-Quijano

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Understanding what fishers know about the ecology of the fish they catch, and how they perceive the state and management of their fisheries can guide efforts towards more sustainable fishing practices. We tested relationships between fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) and their perceptions of their fisheries and of marine protected areas in the Dominican Republic. A qualitative-quantitative methodological sequence using data from interviews with 152 multi-species fishers revealed variable, but generally high levels of LEK, particularly of habitat use and predator–prey interactions. The majority reported negative perceptions of the state of their fishery and were aware of local management actions. …

Online Sale Of Small Turtles Circumvents Public Health Regulations In The United States, Lauren E. Montague, Juliana M. Macrotrigiano, Niamh E. Keane, Hannah E. Marquardt, Jennifer A. Sevin, Nancy E. Karraker

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

In the United States (U.S.), pet turtles have been associated with outbreaks of salmonellosis, a serious and sometimes-fatal intestinal illness caused by Salmonella bacteria, with nearly 300,000 people being infected in some years. Children are particularly susceptible because of their propensity to put items, including small turtles, in their mouths. In 1975, a U.S. federal regulation prohibited the sale of turtles <4 inches (101.6 mm) in size, except for the purposes of export, scientific, or educational purposes. This regulation was established to reduce the incidence of salmonellosis, particularly in small children. Previous research has not evaluated the availability of turtles <4 inches in size on websites selling wildlife. We monitored 16 websites in 2021 and quantified listings of small turtles. We determined whether information on Salmonella, the 1975 federal regulation, or related state regulations were provided on the websites and determined legality of sales of small turtles by state regulations. We found that all 16 websites openly advertised and sold turtles <4 inches in size, but only half of these websites provided information about Salmonella and/or …

Conceptual And Methodological Advances In Habitat-Selection Modeling: Guidelines For Ecology And Evolution, Joseph M. Northrup, Eric Vander Wal, Maegwin Bonar, John Fieberg, Michel P. Laforge, Martin Leclerc, Christina M. Prokopenko, Brian Gerber Jan 2022

Conceptual And Methodological Advances In Habitat-Selection Modeling: Guidelines For Ecology And Evolution, Joseph M. Northrup, Eric Vander Wal, Maegwin Bonar, John Fieberg, Michel P. Laforge, Martin Leclerc, Christina M. Prokopenko, Brian Gerber

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Habitat selection is a fundamental animal behavior that shapes a wide range of ecological processes, including animal movement, nutrient transfer, trophic dynamics and population distribution. Although habitat selection has been a focus of ecological studies for decades, technological, conceptual and methodological advances over the last 20 yr have led to a surge in studies addressing this process. Despite the substantial literature focused on quantifying the habitat-selection patterns of animals, there is a marked lack of guidance on best analytical practices. The conceptual foundations of the most commonly applied modeling frameworks can be confusing even to those well versed in their …

In many regions of the world, forest management has reduced old forest and simplified forest structure and composition. We hypothesized that such forest degradation has resulted in long-term habitat loss for forest-associated bird species of eastern Canada (130,017 km2) which, in turn, has caused bird-population declines. Despite little change in overall forest cover, we found substantial reductions in old forest as a result of frequent clear-cutting and a broad-scale transformation to intensified forestry. Back-cast species distribution models revealed that breeding habitat loss occurred for 66% of the 54 most common species from 1985 to 2020 and was strongly …

How Is H. Pylori Implicated In The Etiology Of Cancer?, Chaya S. Lowy Jan 2022

How Is H. Pylori Implicated In The Etiology Of Cancer?, Chaya S. Lowy

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Gastric cancer is a major public health concern due to the many deaths it is associated with. H. pylori is present in almost all gastric cancer patients; thus, it is fundamental to understand how H. pylori is implicated in the etiology of gastric cancer. The research in this paper is primarily based on studies acquired from Touro College Online Libraries. The bacteria have the means to survive the harsh environment of the stomach by creating a safe microenvironment and propelling themselves toward safer territory. If the bacteria attach to host cells, H. pylori injects cytotoxin-associated protein A (CagA) and vacuolating …

Cenchrus Setiger - Environmental Weed Risk Assessment 2022, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Environmental Weed Risk Assessments

Introducing new plants to an area may have both positive and negative effects on the environment, economy and community. To minimise the negative environmental impact of introducing new agricultural species, DPIRD conducts a risk assessment procedure based on widely accepted scientific standards. This report assesses Birdwood grass (Cenchrus setiger). Birdwood grass (Cenchrus setiger) is native to north Africa, India and Middle east. It arrived in Western Australia (WA) when seed was sent from India in the 1920s by Field Marshal Lord Birdwood to his son-in-law, a grazier, in northern WA (Petheram and Kok 1991). It is a tufted, perennial bunch …

Cross Species Use Of Human Microarray Genotyping Technology For Bornean Orangutan (Pongo Pygmaeus) Snp Discovery, Ruth Ella Linsky, R. Steven Wagner, Reniastoetie Djojoasmoro, Joseph G. Lorenz, Biruté M. F. Galdikas

Student Published Works

Previous genetic studies of orangutans (Pongo spp.) have relied mainly upon mitochondrial DNA or microsatellite short tandem repeats (STR) for genomic genotyping analysis. Scientists have yet to take advantage of the genetic closeness of the great apes to humans for genomic analysis by using advanced techniques available for human genotyping. To genotype orangutans at Tanjung Puting National Park, we developed a novel combination of a methyl-based magnetic enrichment capture of genomic fecal DNA with genotyping on a human targeted single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray, and compared this to additional microsatellite (STR) micro-capillary genotyping. We successfully isolated 125 known human genomic …

Effect Of Nest Box Temperature Mitigation Treatments On Nest Success And Nestling Condition In A Southeastern Population Of Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia Sialis), Christopher G. Horacek, Katie Stumpf, Wayne Powell

Graduate Research Showcase

Understanding behavioral responses of wildlife to climate change will be important as global temperatures continue to rise. Effects of rising temperatures may impact many species, including those that breed in seemingly protected nests, such as cavity nesting birds. Variations in nest cavity microclimate during the early development of secondary cavity nesting passerines may affect the growth of offspring and impact nesting success and survival. We examined the effect of two heat mitigation treatments (white exterior, n=11, and an internal foil heat shield, n=16) and nest box opening orientation (north, south, east, west) on internal nest box temperatures and the effect …

Melting Heat Transfer Effects On Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid With Heat Generation(Absorption) In Slip Flow Regime, Shimaa E. Waheed, Ahmed M. Megahed Jan 2022

Melting Heat Transfer Effects On Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid With Heat Generation(Absorption) In Slip Flow Regime, Shimaa E. Waheed, Ahmed M. Megahed

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, the heat transfer mechanism to the non-Newtonian micropolar slip fluid flow over a stretching sheet in the presence of the melting heat transfer with heat generation(absorption) have been studied. With appropriate dimensionless transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the physical problem are reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations valid in the melting regime. Solutions of the system are obtained by employing the Chebyshev spectral method. Numerical solutions are obtained for different values of the material parameter, slip parameter, heat generation(absorption) parameter, local Eckret number, melting parameter, microrotation parameter and thermal conductivity parameter. From this …

Why On Earth Does “Tongue(S)” Become Ecstatic Speech?, Ekaputra Tupamahu Jan 2022

Why On Earth Does “Tongue(S)” Become Ecstatic Speech?, Ekaputra Tupamahu

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

This chapter deals with the history of interpretation. Why is the phenomenon of “tongue(s)” in the New Testament understood today as ecstatic speech? In the history of interpretation, there are two major modes of reading the phenomenon of speaking in tongue(s) in the New Testament: the “missionary-expansionist” and the “romantic-nationalist” modes of reading. The earliest readers of the New Testament up until those of the mid-nineteenth century commonly understood the phenomenon of tongue(s) as a miraculous ability to speak in foreign languages—often called xenolalia—for the purpose of expanding Christianity and preaching the gospel. The shift in understanding began to …

Repurposing Of Small Molecule Inhibitor Ym-155 Inhibits High-Risk Neuroblastoma Growth By Directly Inhibiting Survivin Protein, Danielle Crystal Rouse Jan 2022

Repurposing Of Small Molecule Inhibitor Ym-155 Inhibits High-Risk Neuroblastoma Growth By Directly Inhibiting Survivin Protein, Danielle Crystal Rouse

Theses and Dissertations

High-risk neuroblastoma (NB) is an aggressive pediatric tumor which develops from the extracranial sympathetic nervous system and accounts for almost 15% of all childhood cancer-related deaths. Current therapies include high-dose chemotherapy and radiation which have long-term toxic side-effects. Despite these intensive therapies, the overall survival rate of NB is less than 50%. Therefore, developing novel therapeutic approaches by directly targeting the molecular mechanisms that drives NB progression is very important. In the present study, we analyzed genomic datasets of 1235 NB patients and discovered that overexpression of survivin coding gene BIRC5 strongly correlates with poor overall and event-free survival of …

Human Otop1 Proton Channel Can Function As A Monomer, Gabriella Abigail Ulloa Jan 2022

Human Otop1 Proton Channel Can Function As A Monomer, Gabriella Abigail Ulloa

Theses and Dissertations

Otopetrins (OTOP) represent a new family of eukaryotic proton channels that do not share structural similarities with other renowned ion channels. Otop1 was initially known for its involvement in vestibular function and its significance for otoconia formation before it was established as a bona fide sour taste receptor. The cryo-EM structures for several Otop channels have been determined and demonstrated Otop1 as a homodimer comprised of two subunits. Each subunit constitutes twelve transmembrane helices that can be further partitioned into two structurally similar six transmembrane domains designated as the N and C domains. Molecular dynamic simulations have also previously shown …

Event Tourism, Public Policy And Socio-Cultural Development In Dublin, Bernadette Quinn, Ana Maria Fernandes Dr, Theresa Ryan Dr Jan 2022

Event Tourism, Public Policy And Socio-Cultural Development In Dublin, Bernadette Quinn, Ana Maria Fernandes Dr, Theresa Ryan Dr

Articles

In a highly globalised, competitive world, urban strategies often highlight festivals and events as activities which can attract tourists and investors, extend the tourism season and boost the economy. Event tourism as a term is now well established in the tourism lexicon, however, it is usually employed in quite a limited way that offers only partial insights into a complex phenomenon. To redress this deficit, this paper examines the case of Dublin, where for the last twenty-five years, policy-makers have been using festivals and events to boost the city’s international standing. The aim is to investigate whether policy-makers can strategically …

Laborem Exercens And The Subjective Dimension Of Work In Economics And Finance, Geoffrey Frieson Jan 2022

Laborem Exercens And The Subjective Dimension Of Work In Economics And Finance, Geoffrey Frieson

Department of Finance: Faculty Publications

The objective dimension of work involves the person acting on external objects through the process of economic production. But because persons tend toward self-realization, and because work is an integral part of this process, the person is also the subject of work. The subjective dimension of work involves work as a creative process operating on the person performing the work. In the encyclical Laborem Exercens, John Paul II argues that the subjective dimension of work is primary and that the primary basis of the value of work is the subject: man himself. This does not mean that the economic …
