Using Sustainable Web Design Practices: Website Redesign For The Climatemusic Project, Charlotte M. Saunders

Graphic Communication

Sustainable practices go beyond reducing, reusing, and recycling in the physical world. In the digital world, design has a high environmental impact, so the choices designers make can eat up electricity and raise their carbon footprint. Therefore, designing low-carbon sites through UX, imagery, and color, and using a sustainability host is very beneficial for both usability and the environment. The ClimateMusic Project is a non-profit organization that aims to raise climate change awareness through music. This organization seeks to reduce their carbon footprint as well as help raise awareness through their Take Action web page. For my senior project I …

Urban Wildlife Management Planning Process And Conflict Mitigation: A Case Study Of Denver’S Canada Goose Management Plan, Brent Johannes

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

In 2019 and 2020, the USDA in coordination with Denver Parks and Recreation removed 2,174 geese from 6 different parks within the City of Denver. The removals and use of lethal methods to manage the concerns related to the geese population in Denver’s parks caused a public conflict and resulted in multiple legal challenges with the City of Denver. The opposition group claimed that the city did not sufficiently engage with the public in the formation of the goose management plan, and did not provide any public notification about the plan to remove geese. City officials have claimed that attempts …

Timing Of Implants Use In Backgrounding System, Kylie M. Butterfield

Applied Science Program: Theses

A study was conducted over two years to determine the interactions of winter rate of gain at a high gain (HG) of 0.91 kg and low gain (LG) 0.45 kg, and implant strategy in the backgrounding and subsequent effects in the finishing phases. There were three phases in this study, the winter phase (~148 days), the summer phase (~60 days) and the finishing phase (~120 days). This was a 2 x 3 factorial design. The first factor is a rate of gain at either 0.91 kg (HG) or 0.45 kg (LG). The next factor is the timing of implant where …

“Contrary To Law”: Determining The Scope Of Qualifying Predicate Offenses For 18 U.S.C. § 545, Arjun Prakash Dec 2022

“Contrary To Law”: Determining The Scope Of Qualifying Predicate Offenses For 18 U.S.C. § 545, Arjun Prakash

University of Chicago Law Review

This Comment seeks to resolve an ongoing dispute among courts regarding the correct interpretation of “contrary to law” in 18 U.S.C. § 545, a statute that criminalizes the unlawful importation of goods. In particular, courts disagree about whether “contrary to law” includes administrative regulatory viol ations, which would massively expand the applicability of § 545’s severe criminal penalties.

This Comment argues that analyzing previous versions of § 545 and applying canons of statutory interpretation provide support for a narrow interpretation of the statute. But these lines of analysis do not definitively establish that this interpretation is correct. As a result, …

Increasing Production Of Therapeutic Mabs In Cho Cells Through Genetic Engineering, Charles Barentine Dec 2022

Increasing Production Of Therapeutic Mabs In Cho Cells Through Genetic Engineering, Charles Barentine

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Between 2014 and 2018, the global market for therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) rose from $60 billion to $115.2 billion with a projected value of $300 billion by 2025. These molecules are used to effectively treat some of the most challenging illnesses from auto-immune diseases to cancer. While mAbs are highly valuable with potent applications, their production at scale remains an outstanding challenge. These molecules are largely produced in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells that require highly specific conditions to produce a useful product.

Genetic engineering presents one solution to overcome productivity limits. With the advent of CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced …

Avian Species Distribution Models: Using Location Data To Inform Management Decisions, Marilyn E. Wright Dec 2022

Avian Species Distribution Models: Using Location Data To Inform Management Decisions, Marilyn E. Wright

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Both state and federal wildlife agencies strive to conserve and protect wildlife and their habitats as an important public resource. Applied management decisions often rely on being able to obtain data that can efficiently and effectively enhance the understanding of these systems for informing management actions. Wildlife managers often focus efforts on a small subset of species from an ecosystem, typically called focal species, who can serve as surrogates for understanding the health and function of the system. Models that consider how these focal species interact with the ecosystem are often used to better understand important aspects of their life …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Objective

In gout, hyperuricemia promotes urate crystal deposition that stimulates the NLRP3 inflammasome and IL-1β-mediated arthritis. Incident gout without background hyperuricemia is rarely reported. To identify hyperuricemia-independent mechanisms driving gout incidence and progression, we characterized erosive urate crystalline inflammatory arthritis meeting ACR/EULAR gout classification criteria in a normouricemic young adult female.

Methods

Whole genome sequencing, quantitative proteomics, whole blood RNA-seq, and IL-1β-induced murine knee synovitis characterized proband candidate genes, biomarkers, and pathogenic mechanisms.

Results

Lubricin was attenuated in proband serum, associated with elevated acute phase reactants and inflammatory whole blood transcripts and transcriptional pathways. The proband had predicted damaging gene …

Sensitivites Of Dryland Mammals To Mean And Variance In Aridity, Jessica C. Johnson Dec 2022

Sensitivites Of Dryland Mammals To Mean And Variance In Aridity, Jessica C. Johnson

Biology ETDs

An important component of evaluating the consequences of climate change is to understand not only how climate trends, such as warming, affect species abundance but also how increasing climate variability will change population abundances. Studies on species' sensitivities to interannual variability are rare because they require long-term data collected either over naturally variable climate conditions or within direct manipulations of year-to-year variability. Physiology, functional traits, and diet composition related to resource acquisition or reproduction may be valuable predictors of species sensitivities to changes in both climate mean and variability. We predicted that species with certain physiologies, such as large body …

Flexible Aid In An Uncertain World: The Coronavirus State And Local Fiscal Recovery Funds Program, Philip Rocco, Amanda Kass

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

Emergency fiscal transfers to state, local, tribal, and territorial governments have been at the core of the U.S. federal government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The most extensive of these transfer programs is the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (CSLFRF) program, contained in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The CSLFRF is not only larger than prior rounds of emergency aid, it was also designed to address a broader series of crises, address pre-existing inequities, and provide greater discretion to public officials in deciding how to allocate funds. In this article, we consider the extent to which …

Multiscale Topology Optimization With A Strong Dependence On Complementary Energy, Dustin Dean Bielecki Dec 2022

Multiscale Topology Optimization With A Strong Dependence On Complementary Energy, Dustin Dean Bielecki

All Dissertations

A discrete approach introduces a novel deep learning approach for generating fine resolution structures that preserve all the information from the topology optimization (TO). The proposed approach utilizes neural networks (NNs) that map the desired engineering properties to seed for determining optimized structure. This framework relies on utilizing parameters such as density and nodal deflections to predict optimized topologies. A three-stage NN framework is employed for the discrete approach to reduce computational runtime while maintaining physics constraints.

A continuous representation that uses complementary energy (CE) methods to solve a representative element's homogenized properties consists of an embedded structure that is …

Exploring The Multiple Paradoxes And Challenges Of Uganda's Refugee Law, Policies And Practice, J. Oloka-Onyango Dec 2022

Exploring The Multiple Paradoxes And Challenges Of Uganda's Refugee Law, Policies And Practice, J. Oloka-Onyango

The Transnational Human Rights Review

Uganda has garnered considerable international praise for its ‘open-door’ policies on refugees. This is particularly the case against the backdrop of a global context of the growing phenomenon of states constructing physical and metaphorical walls against the phenomenon of migration, whether forced or voluntary. Nevertheless, such praise conceals a much more complex context of opportunistic strategizing, donor politics and regional geopolitical balancing. In sum, what is lauded as ‘progressive’ is much more problematic and nuanced, especially with respect to the issue of local integration (particularly for long-term refugees), voluntary repatriation and the management and funding of refugee support.

Low total energy expenditure (TEE, MJ/d) has been a hypothesized risk factor for weight gain, but repeatability of TEE, a critical variable in longitudinal studies of energy balance, is understudied. We examine repeated doubly labeled water (DLW) measurements of TEE in 348 adults and 47 children from the IAEA DLW Database (mean ± SD time interval: 1.9 ± 2.9 y) to assess repeatability of TEE, and to examine if TEE adjusted for age, sex, fat-free mass, and fat mass is associated with changes in weight or body composition. Here, we report that repeatability of TEE is high for adults, but …

Redox Phospholipidomics Analysis Reveals Specific Oxidized Phospholipids And Regions In The Diabetic Mouse Kidney, Allison Mccrimmon, Sydney Corbin, Bindesh Shrestha, Gregory Roman, Suraj Dhungana, Krisztian Stadler

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

While it is generally accepted that oxidative stress impacts the diabetic kidney and contributes to pathogenesis, there is a substantial lack of knowledge about the molecular entity and anatomic location of a variety of reactive species. Here we provide a novel “oxidative stress map” of the diabetic kidney – the first of its kind, and identify specific, oxidized and other reactive lipids and their location. We used the db/db mouse model and Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI) mass spectrometry combined with heatmap image analysis. We analyzed a comprehensive array of phospholipid peroxide species in normal (db/m) and diabetic (db/db) kidneys using …

Assigning Culicoides Larvae To Species Using Dna Barcoding Of Adult Females And Phylogenetic Associations, Tao Jin, Claudia Husseneder, Lane Foil

Faculty Publications

Background: Orbivirus-induced hemorrhagic diseases cause high mortality in wild and captive white-tailed deer in North America. The role of different Culicoides species in Orbivirus transmission outside of areas of intensive animal production has not been established. At our study location, bluetongue virus (BTV) RNA-positive female Culicoides debilipalpis pools have been detected annually since 2012 when BTV transmission was noted in a captive deer herd. Identifying specific larval habitats of suspected vectors at active transmission sites is crucial both for identifying the source of the vectors and for subsequently planning intervention actions. Since C. debilipalpis larvae are known to develop in …

Background: Pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons play a sexually dimorphic role in body weight and glucose balance. However, the mechanisms for the sex differences in POMC neuron functions are not fully understood. Results: We detected small conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK) current in POMC neurons. Secondary analysis of published single-cell RNA-Seq data showed that POMC neurons abundantly express SK3, one SK channel subunit. To test whether SK3 in POMC neurons regulates POMC neuron functions on energy and glucose homeostasis, we used a Cre-loxP strategy to delete SK3 specifically from mature POMC neurons. POMC-specific deletion of SK3 did not affect body weight in either …
