Fusion Of Multi-Focus Color Images Based On Wavelet Transform And Curvelet Transform., Hossam El-Din Moustafa, Yasmeen Abd El-Ghany

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Curvelet transform is a recently-developed multi-scale transform, which is more suitable for objects with curves. Applications of the Curvelet transform have increased rapidly in the field of image fusion. Image fusion means the combination of two images into a single image that has the maximum information content without producing details that are non-existent in the given images. In the present work an algorithm for multi-focus color image fusion based on the Curvelet transform is implemented, analyzed, and compared with a Wavelet-based fusion algorithm. Two models for color image fusion are presented. The first is based on the RGB components of …

Natural Convection Heat Transfer From Vibrated Vertical Flat Plate., Haider Al Sultan, Ahmed Sultan, Hamed El-Tahan

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Experiments were performed on natural convection heat transfer from vibrated vertical flat plate heated under constant heat flux. The working fluid used is air. The effects of modified Rayleigh number, (107≤Ra*≤1010), the vibration frequency (0≤F≤25), and the amplitude (0≤A≤7.6 mm), vibrational Reynolds number of 102≤Rev≤8*104, were studied. Over the tested range of modified Rayleigh number, it is found that the vibrated plate generally shows higher heat transfer coefficients than that of the stationary one for all values of amplitude, and frequency. It is also concluded that the heat transfer is strongly affected by the vibration frequency while it is weakly …

Abrasive Wear Of Nano-Al2o3 Particles And Cnts Strengthened 2024 Aluminum Alloy Composites Manufactured By Powder Metallurgy., Manal Ramadan

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Metal matrix composites reinforced by carbon nanotubes as well as the effect of Nano Al2O3 (n- Al2O3) particles and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are very promising materials, suitable for a large number of applications. These composites consist of a metal matrix filled with Nano-particles featuring physical and mechanical properties very different from those of the matrix. The Nano-particles can improve the base material in terms of electrical properties, damping properties and mechanical strength. In this work we investigated the effect of reinforcing Al-2024 with CNTs and n- Al2O3. The Al-2024 alloy was produced by powder metallurgy. The alloy strengthened by a …

A Sweep-Line Algorithm And Its Application To Spiral Pocketing., Tawfik El-Midany, Ahmed Abd El-Fattah Elkeran, H. Tawfik

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This paper presents an efficient line-offset algorithm for general polygonal shapes with islands. A developed sweep-line algorithm (SL) is introduced to find all sell-intersection points accurately and quickly. The previous work is limited to handle polygons that having no line-segments in parallel to $Weep-line directions. An invalid loop detection and removing (ILDR) algorithm is proposed. The invalid loops detection algorithm divides the polygon al self-intersection points into a set of small polygons, and re-polygonized them. The polygons are checked for direction; invalid polygons are always having inverse direction with the boundary polygon. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in Visual …

Factors Affecting The Natural Machine Damping Power In Series Compensated Power Systems., A. Sallam

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Studies of the application of series capacitor compensation in integrated power systems lead to consideration of the effects of the compensation upon the contribution arising from the natural damping of the generators. In general the series compensation is chosen because of the reduction in transfer reactance, but this paper shows that there is also an improvement in the natural positive sequence machine damping Automatic voltage regulator effects and the effects of feedback signals in such controls have been studied. The possibility of sub-synchronous resonance is taken into account.

Restoring Female Agency: Wicked As A Feminist Fairy-Tale Revision, Erica Nicole Fox Dec 2021

Restoring Female Agency: Wicked As A Feminist Fairy-Tale Revision, Erica Nicole Fox

Masters Theses

One method of promoting gender equality that has gained popularity in recent years involves revising the fairy tales, primarily the ones compiled and revised by Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Anderson, and the Grimm brothers, to create versions in which the female characters have agency and purpose outside of furthering patriarchal gender ideals. The primary goal of the feminist fairy-tale revision is to give the female characters agency, not because they are women, but because they are functioning characters within the story. While there are many authors who attempt to create fairy-tale revisions that embody a feminist perspective, not all are …

In The Straits: Making History Accessible Through The Parent-Child Relationship, Grace Elizabeth Crocker

Masters Theses

Historical fiction gives its readers the chance to meet historic figures, fight alongside their favorite characters in past wars, and experience forgotten ways of life. This genre also offers an alternate route for those who enjoy learning about history but who do not particularly enjoy reading the classics. With my chosen creative work, In the Straits, I invite my readers to explore the lesser-known past of Malaya and what it was like during the days leading up to the bloodiest war in history, World War II, through the eyes of a separated father and daughter who will do anything to …

Failure to take responsibility for intervening has been identified as a primary barrier to bystander intervention. Building on these findings, we examine how perceptions of responsibility affect responses to witnessing victimization in the online realm—a topic that has received limited attention. Using a maximum-likelihood selection model, we analyze data from the Pew American Trends Panel (N = 3709) to estimate the effects of respondents’ perceptions of the role different groups should play in addressing online harassment on their likelihood to engage in intervention, target hardening, or inaction in response to witnessing online harassment, conditioned upon their likelihood of having …

The Empowerment Of Migrant Workers In A Precarious Situation, Fay Faraday Dec 2021

The Empowerment Of Migrant Workers In A Precarious Situation, Fay Faraday

Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents

The experience of transnational migrants working for low pay under exploitative conditions has been well-documented for many years. Yet, a sizeable catalogue of binding international instruments establishes a rights-based framework through which states commit to deliver substantive labour protections to migrant workers. By focusing on the operation of labour inspectorates in five countries – Canada, Germany, Malaysia, Qatar and South Africa – this paper undertakes a comparative analysis to explore what accounts for the persistent gap between the vision of the rights-based framework and the reality of rights violations that migrant workers experience. These countries were selected for comparison because …

A Novel Dataset Measuring Change In Copyright Exceptions, Michael Palmedo

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

Copyrights grant creators long periods of market exclusivity during which they or their agents have the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute their works. However, copyright exceptions limit their scope and strength. The laws on both copyright protection and copyright exceptions vary substantially from one country to the next. This working paper introduces a novel, survey-based dataset that describes changes to 24 countries’ laws on copyright exceptions over time. To explore the data, I construct two indices from subsets of the dataset; one that focus on exceptions related to ICT technologies and another that focuses on educational uses. The indices …

Obesity is primarily a consequence of consuming calories beyond energetic requirements, but underpinning drivers have not been fully defined. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) neurons in the dorsal Raphe nucleus (5-HTDRN) regulate different types of feeding behavior, such as eating to cope with hunger or for pleasure. Here, we observed that activation of 5-HTDRN to hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (5-HTDRN → ARH) projections inhibits food intake driven by hunger via actions at ARH 5-HT2C and 5-HT1B receptors, whereas activation of 5-HTDRN to ventral tegmental area (5-HTDRN → VTA) projections inhibits non-hunger-driven feeding via actions at 5-HT2C receptors. Further, hunger-driven feeding gradually activates ARH-projecting 5-HTDRN …

Despite good adherence to supervised endurance exercise training (EET), some individuals experience no or little improvement in peripheral insulin sensitivity. The genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are currently not understood. By investigating genome-wide variants associated with baseline and exercise-induced changes (∆) in insulin sensitivity index (Si) in healthy volunteers, we have identified novel candidate genes whose mouse knockouts phenotypes were consistent with a causative effect on Si. An integrative analysis of functional genomic and transcriptomic profiles suggests genetic variants have an aggregate effect on baseline Si and ∆Si, focused around cholinergic signalling, including downstream calcium and chemokine signalling. …

Secular Architecture: Domestic, Carolyn S. Snively

Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Faculty Publications

The geographic focus of this discussion of Byzantine domestic architecture, from the late fourth to fifteenth centuries, will be on the Balkans and Asia Minor. Although more dwellings exist than any other type of structure within a settlement or outside it, emphasis has often been on large public buildings or the peristyle house rather than the range of housing units and their multifunctional nature. Those who study domestic architecture tend to look at palaces and other grand and richly decorated structures; only recently has attention been paid to lower-class and rural dwellings.

The chances of excavation often dictate our knowledge …
