An Analysis Of Camera Configurations And Depth Estimation Algorithms For Triple-Camera Computer Vision Systems, Jared Peter-Contesse Dec 2021

An Analysis Of Camera Configurations And Depth Estimation Algorithms For Triple-Camera Computer Vision Systems, Jared Peter-Contesse

Master's Theses

The ability to accurately map and localize relevant objects surrounding a vehicle is an important task for autonomous vehicle systems. Currently, many of the environmental mapping approaches rely on the expensive LiDAR sensor. Researchers have been attempting to transition to cheaper sensors like the camera, but so far, the mapping accuracy of single-camera and dual-camera systems has not matched the accuracy of LiDAR systems. This thesis examines depth estimation algorithms and camera configurations of a triple-camera system to determine if sensor data from an additional perspective will improve the accuracy of camera-based systems. Using a synthetic dataset, the performance of …

Printed Circuit Board Design And Layout For Hobbyists, Engineers, And Students, Michael A. Derrenbacher Dec 2021

Printed Circuit Board Design And Layout For Hobbyists, Engineers, And Students, Michael A. Derrenbacher

Master's Theses

Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are a ubiquitous element of virtually every electronic system manufactured world-wide. It is not a stretch of the imagination to say that if it’s electronic, there is a PCB in it. PCBs are necessary tools for electronics work, and tools need to have instructions. For better or worse, PCB knowledge is a deep and wide ocean. There is much to cover for even a surface level understanding, and there are deep areas rich in technical expertise. Navigating the ocean of knowledge is treacherous; common knowledge of yore can be downright dubious now. PCB manufacturing and electronics …

Adopting Accessibility Guidelines For Videogames To Collectible Card Games, Cooper Biancur Dec 2021

Adopting Accessibility Guidelines For Videogames To Collectible Card Games, Cooper Biancur

Electrical Engineering Master’s Theses

The development of accessible video games has been discussed through multiple publications in the 21st century; however, little to no attention has been given to non-electronic gaming. Like video games, Collectible Card Games (CCG) have also gained massive popularity, but no accessible guidelines have been created to help the disabled better play them. The need for inclusion in gaming is critical because it can act as a medium for social interaction and a learning tool for teaching. Today offers numerous technologies that can help those with disabilities, such as microcomputers, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and Text to …

Criticizing Judges: A Lawyer's Professional Responsibility, Lonnie T. Brown Dec 2021

Criticizing Judges: A Lawyer's Professional Responsibility, Lonnie T. Brown

Georgia Law Review

Lawyers, as officers of the court, are expected to act with deference and respect toward judges. Speaking sharply to or publicly criticizing members of the bench is frowned upon and not infrequently met with punitive responses. The judiciary, however, is not above reproach. Judges are fallible and may possess personal biases, tainting self-interest, or even prejudice. As such, at times, they must disqualify themselves if their ability to dispense justice fairly and impartially can reasonably be questioned. Indeed, the very nature of a judge’s role requires avoidance of even the “appearance of impropriety.” When judges fail to adhere to this …

The Lost History Of Delegation At The Founding, Christine Chabot Dec 2021

The Lost History Of Delegation At The Founding, Christine Chabot

Georgia Law Review

The new Supreme Court is poised to bring the administrative state to a grinding halt. Five Justices have endorsed Justice Gorsuch’s dissent in Gundy v. United States—an opinion that threatens to invalidate countless regulatory statutes in which Congress has delegated significant policymaking authority to the Executive Branch. Justice Gorsuch claimed that the “text and history” of the Constitution required the Court to replace a longstanding constitutional doctrine that permits broad delegations with a more restrictive one. But the supposedly originalist arguments advanced by Justice Gorsuch and like-minded scholars run counter to the understandings of delegation that prevailed in the Founding …

How Sweet It Is: Fellowship And Continuity In A Church-Based Fall Prevention Program With African American Elders In The Northeastern United States, Michelle L. Ramirez, Cedric H. Jones Jr., Carol Maritz, Donna Jensen Dec 2021

How Sweet It Is: Fellowship And Continuity In A Church-Based Fall Prevention Program With African American Elders In The Northeastern United States, Michelle L. Ramirez, Cedric H. Jones Jr., Carol Maritz, Donna Jensen

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Deaths from unintentional injuries are the seventh leading cause of death among older adults and falls account for the largest percentage of these deaths, with individuals aged ≥85 particularly vulnerable. Physical activity can reduce frailty and prevent falls; however, many elders are not physically active and women, ethnic minorities, and those with low education levels are the least active. Moreover, experiences of racial discrimination can lead to increased stress and unhealthy adaptive behaviors, and the cumulative effects of age and race related stressors have been shown to negatively impact the physical and mental health of elderly African Americans. Thus, participation …

Unusual Presentation Of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Involving The Calcaneus: A Case Report, Ashley Mariano, Lawrence M. Fallat

Articles

Lymphoma involves malignancy of the lymphatic system which includes the spleen, thymus, bone marrow and lymph nodes. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is an aggressive, rapidly-growing type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). We present a case of an 18-year-old male who initially presented with right hindfoot pain and swelling. Initial radiographs revealed no osseous pathology that correlated with the area of pain and swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was obtained which revealed a large soft tissue mass surrounding the calcaneus with cortical erosion and complete marrow replacement of the calcaneus. Due to concern for malignancy, the patient underwent a fluoroscopic-guided biopsy …

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Ancient DNA is transforming our ability to reconstruct historical patterns and mechanisms shaping modern diversity and distributions. In particular, molecular data from extinct Holocene island faunas have revealed surprising biogeographic scenarios. Here, we recovered partial mitochondrial (mt) genomes for 1300–1400 year old specimens (n = 2) of the extinct “horned” crocodile, Voay robustus, collected from Holocene deposits in southwestern Madagascar. Phylogenetic analyses of partial mt genomes and tip-dated timetrees based on molecular, fossil, and stratigraphic data favor a sister group relationship between Voay and Crocodylus (true crocodiles). These well supported trees conflict with recent morphological systematic work that has consistently …

Local Weather Explains Annual Variation In Northern Goshawk Reproduction In The Northern Great Basin, Usa, Allyson B. Bangerter, Eliana R. Heiser, Jay D. Carlisle, Robert A. Miller

Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations

Weather is thought to influence raptor reproduction through effects on prey availability, condition of adults, and survival of nests and young; however, there are few long-term studies of the effects of weather on raptor reproduction. We investigated the effects of weather on Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis; henceforth goshawk) breeding rate, productivity, and fledging date in south-central Idaho and northern Utah, USA. Using data from 42 territories where we found evidence of breeding attempts in ≥1 yr from 2011–2019, we analyzed breeding rates using 315 territory–season combinations, analyzed productivity for 134 breeding attempts, and analyzed fledging date for 118 …

The Relationship Between Cognitive Functioning And Internalizing/Externalizing Behaviors In Children And Adolescents With Down Syndrome, Jessalin R. Good

USC Aiken Psychology Theses

Introduction: Down syndrome (DS) is a developmental disorder caused by a complete extra copy of chromosome 21. This genetic error results in a variety of other symptoms related to a range of medical and cognitive challenges. Although it has been reported that a significant relationship exists between cognitive functioning and both internalizing and externalizing behaviors in typically developing (TD) individuals, the literature is severely limited in investigating this relationship in those with DS.

Rationale: Internalizing and externalizing behaviors have been shown to have a negative relationship with cognitive functioning in TD children and adolescents (Shankman et al., 2010; Wood et …

Zinc is an essential cofactor for bacterial metabolism, and many Enterobacteriaceae express the zinc transporters ZnuABC and ZupT to acquire this metal in the host. However, the probiotic bacterium Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (or “Nissle”) exhibits appreciable growth in zinc-limited media even when these transporters are deleted. Here, we show that Nissle utilizes the siderophore yersiniabactin as a zincophore, enabling Nissle to grow in zinc-limited media, to tolerate calprotectin-mediated zinc sequestration, and to thrive in the inflamed gut. We also show that yersiniabactin’s affinity for iron or zinc changes in a pH-dependent manner, with increased relative zinc binding as the …

Low-Cost Mechanical Ventilator For Pulmonary Monitoring, Atharv Dhananjay Naik, B Sai Venkata Dhanus, Dilip Kumar U, Mahesh K N

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

Many respiratory-related diseases that require urgent ventilation have become more prevalent recently. Since the world is in the grip of a pandemic, ventilation has become a true treatment step. So, accepting this as the motivation, this paper presents a low-cost mechanical ventilator to address the major issue. This ventilator ensures that lung activity runs smoothly and effectively. The electronic components used over here are Raspberry Pi, Arduino, pressure sensors, servomotors, etc., and Python programming as a software part. Here we propose three parameters of lung activity. They are the I: E (Inspiratory to Expiratory) ratio, air volume, and respiratory frequency. …

Kalman Filter Vs Alternative Modeling Techniques And Applied Investment Strategies, Heather E. Dempsey Dec 2021

Kalman Filter Vs Alternative Modeling Techniques And Applied Investment Strategies, Heather E. Dempsey

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

This thesis examines the efficacy of alternative modeling techniques to predict stock market returns modeled with time-varying coefficients with the goal of developing and implementing a trading strategy that yields excess returns. First, we determine the modeling technique with the smallest forecast error using historical predictors: the differenced dividend-price ratio, lagged S&P 500 returns, and the change in implied volatility. The candidate modeling techniques include both constant and recursive ordinary least squares (OLS) regression methods and diverges from previous return forecast literature with the comparison of a state-space model (SSM) cast as a VAR(1) process to each OLS technique. The …

Glycan Functionalization Of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (Ionps) As A Method Of Inactivating Antibiotic Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Via A Magnetically Mediated Energy Delivery (Magmed) System, Cedric Taylor

All Theses

With the increase of antibiotic resistant bacteria, current established therapeutic treatment methods are rapidly demonstrating decreasing efficacy. For this project, we are studying a novel alternate mechanism of treating antibiotic resistant bacteria by utilizing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) coated with a heterobifunctional polyethylene glycol polymer (PEG) and functionalized with glycan structures that can interact with Neisseria gonorrhoeae FA1090. Interaction between the IONPs and bacteria is manipulated by an external alternating magnetic field (AMF) in a process known as magnetically mediated energy delivery (MagMED). Magnetic IONPs were synthesized and reacted with PEG (PEG-IONPs) and functionalized with glycans Gal(α1-3)Gal(β1-4)Glc(β1-1) (common name: …

Music, for thousands of years, has been at the center of social and cultural aspects to convey emotions and stories to a vast audience. In the modern world, the usage of digital audio has been the main method of consuming music; however, the method in which the translation of a digital audio signal to the analog realm is taken for granted. In this paper, a audio receiver was designed to accept a USB audio signal from any digital source and output an audio signal for headphones or speakers. The receiver was designed to output a maximum of 350W into speakers …

Network Traffic Analysis Using Local Outlier Factor, Khalifa Almheiri Dec 2021

Network Traffic Analysis Using Local Outlier Factor, Khalifa Almheiri

Theses

The issue that this study addresses is the high rate of false positives, high maintenance, and lack of stability and precision that the existing network intrusion detection algorithm faces. To address this problem, we proposed a Local Outlier Factor (LOF) Algorithm that locates outliers and anomalies by comparing the deviation of one data point with respect to its neighbors. To gather data, we will use DARPA’s KDDCup99 as well as questions towards analysts. This data will help determine whether the LOF algorithm is more effective than existing solutions that are presented in the network intrusion detection space.

Catastrophe theory is a mathematical technique for the qualitative analysis of system equations, defining the jump phenomena and sudden changes caused by smooth changes in the system parameters. This theory has been applied previously to the study of steady state stability of power system. This paper presents a new technique in the area of power system stability studies to describe steady-state voltage stability in terms of one of the catastrophe manifolds to which the power system can be fitted.

Well Design And Influence Of Ground Water Level On Pump Performance., Abdel-Razik Zidan Dec 2021

Well Design And Influence Of Ground Water Level On Pump Performance., Abdel-Razik Zidan

Mansoura Engineering Journal

A deep water well of 600 m depth was designed and drilled in the farm, college of agriculture Al-Qassim, fourteen stages turbine pump was selected. to be installed on this well, according to the total head and water discharge required for irrigation. A severe decline of ground water level will not provide the required water discharge and total head even if the pump works under its maximum speed. This could make a trouble shooting or damage to the pump unless its column pipe length will be increased to deal with the existing water level.
