Implementation Of Comprehensive Footcare Program Within Primary Care, Moses Ademola-Ojo
Implementation Of Comprehensive Footcare Program Within Primary Care, Moses Ademola-Ojo
Doctor of Nursing Practice
The incidence of diabetes and its complications is escalating, with over 34.2 million adults in the US having diabetes (CDC, 2020). Despite a decade-long decline in lower-extremity amputations, the incidence is growing (Nichols, 2019), with little emphasis on preventive foot evaluations within primary care. The purpose of this project was the implementation of a multi-faceted program aimed at early identification of lower extremity complications with focused patient education, improved assessment, and documentation, and referral for specialty care. The intervention process included staff training, patient education, foot examination, monofilament testing, pinprick tests, ankle reflex, and tuning fork test. Foot abnormality, loss …

Traffic congestion is a recurring problem with temporal and spatial aspects that affect our lives daily. Providing choices such as increasing transit ridership is part of a balanced and diversified approach to addressing the problem. This project is divided into three parts to address how transit can address this multifaceted congestion problem. The first part investigates the successes and failures of transit and transportation network company (TNC) partnerships on ridership. Transit agencies have partnered with TNCs to attract ridership by providing first/last mile access or substituting for low performing fixed route service. TNCs may have induced travel demand by car …

Raw Versus Linear Acceleration In The Recognition Of Wrist Motions Related To Eating During Everyday Life, Shaurya Gupta
Raw Versus Linear Acceleration In The Recognition Of Wrist Motions Related To Eating During Everyday Life, Shaurya Gupta
All Theses
This thesis investigates the difference between raw and linear acceleration in wrist motion for detecting eating episodes. In previous work, our group developed a classifier that analyzed linear motion and achieved good accuracy. However, the classifier can be volatile in the sense that when retrained and tested on the same data, accuracy varies, especially when trained on small amounts of data such as for a single individual. We hypothesize that in part this may be due to the noise in linear acceleration which is significantly larger relative to normal human wrist motions as compared to the noise in raw acceleration. …

Exploring The Relationship Between Broadband And Socioeconomic Health: A Case Study In Appalachia, Kyra Marie Palange
All Theses
This thesis uses county-level Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Form 477 and Appalachian Regional Commission data to examine factors that affect socioeconomic health, with a particular focus on the impact of household broadband adoption, in rural areas of the Appalachian United States. Outcome variables of interest are percentage of people in poverty, per capita market income (i.e., the income one earns from participating in the economy through wages, investments, business income and the like), and number of excess deaths per 100,000 residents. The first chapter uses two multivariate multiple regression models, one using 2008 data and one using 2016 data, to …
Parametric Study Of Orthogonal Pantographic Lattice With Non-Linear Torsional Resistance At Pivots, Mahendra Singh Bisht
Parametric Study Of Orthogonal Pantographic Lattice With Non-Linear Torsional Resistance At Pivots, Mahendra Singh Bisht
All Theses
Pantographic lattices are cellular solids comprised of continuous beam fibers intersecting at periodically spaced pivots. The pivots are simulated in the discrete finite element beam model as torsional springs with varied torsional stiffness across orders of magnitude. An important functional performance feature of pantographic lattices is their ability to undergo large deformation without inducing large stresses at the pivots. There is a need for predictive models of this nonlinear behavior. In this study, parameter studies on the order of magnitude and nonlinear material behavior of the torsional stiffness at the pivots, combined with and without nonlinear geometric beam kinematic behavior …

Cis-Regulatory elements (cis-REs) include promoters, enhancers, and insulators that regulate gene expression programs via binding of transcription factors. ATAC-seq technology effectively identifies active cis-REs in a given cell type (including from single cells) by mapping accessible chromatin at base-pair resolution. However, these maps are not immediately useful for inferring specific functions of cis-REs. For this purpose, we developed a deep learning framework (CoRE-ATAC) with novel data encoders that integrate DNA sequence (reference or personal genotypes) with ATAC-seq cut sites and read pileups. CoRE-ATAC was trained on 4 cell types (n = 6 samples/replicates) and accurately predicted known cis-RE functions from …

Rhomboid proteases, first discovered in Drosophila, are intramembrane serine proteases. Members of the rhomboid protein family that are catalytically deficient are known as inactive rhomboids (iRhoms). iRhoms have been implicated in wound healing, cancer, and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, inflammation, and skin diseases. The past decade of mouse research has shed new light on two key protein domains of iRhoms-the cytosolic N-terminal domain and the transmembrane dormant peptidase domain-suggesting new ways to target multiple intracellular signaling pathways. This review focuses on recent advances in uncovering the unique functions of iRhom protein domains in normal growth and …

Six-Fold Increase Of Atmospheric Pco2 During The Permian–Triassic Mass Extinction, Yuyang Wu, Daoliang Chu, Jinnan Tong, Haijun Song, Jacopo Dal Corso, Paul B. Wignall, Huyue Song, Yong Du, Ying Cui
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The Permian–Triassic mass extinction was marked by a massive release of carbon into the ocean-atmosphere system, evidenced by a sharp negative carbon isotope excursion. Large carbon emissions would have increased atmospheric pCO2 and caused global warming. However, the magnitude of pCO2 changes during the PTME has not yet been estimated. Here, we present a continuous pCO2 record across the PTME reconstructed from high-resolution δ13C of C3 plants from southwestern China. We show that pCO2 increased from 426 +133/−96 ppmv in the latest Permian to 2507 +4764/−1193 ppmv at the PTME within about 75 kyr, and that the reconstructed …
Understanding The Behavior Of The Covid-19 Pandemic Using Data Analytics, Mohammad Reza Davahli
Understanding The Behavior Of The Covid-19 Pandemic Using Data Analytics, Mohammad Reza Davahli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In December 2019, China announced the breakout of a new virus identified as coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), which soon grew exponentially and became a global pandemic. Despite strict actions to mitigate the spread of the virus in various countries, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a significant loss of human life in 2020 and 2021. To better understand the pandemic, this doctoral research incorporated data analytics to evaluate the behavior and impacts of the virus. The doctoral research contributed to the scientific body of the knowledge in different ways including (1) presenting a systematic literature review of current research and topics about …
Structural Dynamics And Encapsulation Properties Of Polyelectrolyte Complex Micelles, Sachit Shah
Structural Dynamics And Encapsulation Properties Of Polyelectrolyte Complex Micelles, Sachit Shah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Charged therapeutics such as nucleic acids and proteins can treat a vast range of human diseases that are traditionally undruggable. Their broadness in treating disease is due to their ability to influence cellular function. However, their high charge density and physiological barriers such as enzymatic degradation, hinder the deliverability of these molecules to the sites of disease. Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) micelles are core-corona nanostructures that can encapsulate charged molecules and offer a platform for delivery. PECs form the core, when two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes are mixed in an aqueous solution, and the micelle corona is a neutral hydrophilic polymer that …

A Framework For The Design And Characterization Of Advanced Gaskets, Sannmit Shinde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Most industrial manufacturing or processing plants use bolted connections between pipes that transfer media from one location to another. Gaskets are often used to seal these systems as they offer elevated levels of leak mitigation; however, despite their nearly universal usage, the current understanding of gasket mechanics at the meso-scale is still limited. Contemporary gaskets feature viscoelastic materials, fillers, textures, and are fabricated at various thicknesses. They are used in a wide range of thermal, mechanical, chemical, and temporal conditions. The current work characterizes polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) gaskets made with several different filler materials and having vastly different geometries. The chemically …

On Mode Transition Phenomenon And Operating Conditions In Rotating Detonation Rocket Engines, Taha Rezzag-Lebza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The work presented herein consist of first studying the instantaneous properties of the detonation waves in a rotating detonation rocket engine by tracking each individual wave and recording its position, velocity, and peak intensity as it travels around the annulus. Results for a steady portion of a test performed on a rotating detonation rocket engine show that the wave properties exhibit oscillatory behavior. Results obtained from the rotating detonation rocket engine show that the properties are highly dependent on the azimuthal position. In an attempt to understanding the cause of such a behavior, similar investigations were performed on an air-breathing …

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
The period from November 3, 2020 to January 20, 2021, was unlike any presidential transition in our history. President Donald Trump refused to accept his ballot-box defeat, instead battling to overturn the election’s outcome. This dramatic public campaign was waged in state and federal courts, state legislatures, the offices of state and local election officials, the Department of Justice, and finally the halls of Congress, where on January 6, 2021, a mob incited by the President stormed the Capitol with the explicit goal of preventing the final counting of electoral votes for Joe Biden. These efforts had more mundane and …

Discriminatory Permissions And Structural Injustice, Lawrence G. Sager, Nelson Tebbe
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
America is engaged in a nationwide conversation about conscience exemptions from equality laws. So far, that conflict has been debated in terms of religious liberty. Courts have asked whether religious actors like Hobby Lobby and Masterpiece Cakeshop are entitled to exemptions from civil rights laws and whether any such exemptions count as establishments of religion. This framing overlooks an important issue, namely whether any such exemptions violate the Equal Protection Clause. In this Article, we argue that explicit state enactments that both permit and encourage private discrimination against people subject to structural injustice can and should be invalidated by judges …
Tax Without Cash, Jeremy Bearer-Friend
Tax Without Cash, Jeremy Bearer-Friend
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
This Article documents and evaluates tax obligations paid without cash, referred to as “in-kind tax paying.” Such forms of tax paying include paying federal income taxes by remitting a used flatbed truck to the IRS, paying local property taxes by working a few hours a month answering phones at city hall, and paying state excise taxes by conveying a proportion of all seashells farmed within a state to that state. These are not just hypotheticals, but forms of in-kind tax paying that occur in the United States throughout periods when many taxes are also paid in cash. Nevertheless, despite its …
Barring Entry To The Legal Profession: How The Law Condones Willful Blindness To The Bar Exam’S Racially Disparate Impacts, Eura Chang
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
In 2020, only 14.1% of lawyers identified as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), even though 40% of the United States population identified as such. Academics, activists, and attorneys point to a variety of reasons for this disproportion: underfunded public schools, astronomical student debt, standardized tests like the SAT and the LSAT, and many other institutional barriers that disproportionately affect members of the BIPOC community. This note_comment, however, focuses on the final hurdle that a BIPOC law graduate must overcome after a lifetime of persisting past the odds: the bar examination. Despite the bar exam’s exclusionary history and the …

Unconstitutional But Authorized: The Federal Tort Claims Act Should Not Immunize The United States When Federal Officers Violate The Constitution, Daniel Raddenbach
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
To protect its legitimacy, a democratic system like the United States must ensure that the government is at least as accountable for its bad acts as any private actor. Thus, if the government wrongs a citizen via an unconstitutional or tortious act, that citizen should be able to sue the government for redress. It is deeply troubling, therefore, that most such lawsuits against the United States government are dead on arrival—no matter even if the lawsuit involves a government officer who violated a citizen’s constitutional rights. The United States is protected from almost all liability by the sovereign immunity doctrine—the …

Processing And Visualizing Satellite Data, Caleb Collier
Computer Science & Engineering Student Projects
Satellites are a useful way of gathering data at high altitudes. To be able to properly view the data, however, there are many important steps that one must take to ensure the data received is readable and usable. The data must be transmitted from the satellite to the ground, then must be decommuted and can then be used in various ways. This paper is an exploration of various ways of processing and visualizing data received from satellites, as well as various ways of using the data.

Special Education Parent Perceptions Of Involvement And Parent–Educator Relationships During Iep Meetings At Nonpublic Schools, Alex Huynen
Education (PhD) Dissertations
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) requires parents to be involved in all parts of the education decision-making process, including the IEP meeting. Although there is a vast body of research about parents of students receiving special education services and their perspectives of the IEP meeting, little is known about parents’ perspectives of the IEP meeting while students are at a nonpublic school. Understanding the perspectives of parents whose students attend nonpublic schools will allow for more collaboration and more effective IEP for their students attending nonpublic schools. The current study explored parent perspectives of involvement and parent–educator …
