The long-term sustainability of the high-energy physics (HEP) research software ecosystem is essential to the field. With new facilities and upgrades coming online throughout the 2020s, this will only become increasingly important. Meeting the sustainability challenge requires a workforce with a combination of HEP domain knowledge and advanced software skills. The required software skills fall into three broad groups. The first is fundamental and generic software engineering (e.g., Unix, version control, C++, and continuous integration). The second is knowledge of domain-specific HEP packages and practices (e.g., the ROOT data format and analysis framework). The third is more advanced knowledge involving …

We report the first discovery of a transiting circumbinary planet detected from a single sector of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data. During Sector 21, the planet TIC 172900988b transited the primary star and then five days later it transited the secondary star. The binary is itself eclipsing, with a period P ≈ 19.7 days and an eccentricity e ≈ 0.45. Archival data from ASAS-SN, Evryscope, KELT, and SuperWASP reveal a prominent apsidal motion of the binary orbit, caused by the dynamical interactions between the binary and the planet. A comprehensive photodynamical analysis of the TESS, archival and follow-up data …

The Effects Of Sleep Disturbances On Patients In The Intensive Care Setting, Bronwyn Schmidt Dec 2021

The Effects Of Sleep Disturbances On Patients In The Intensive Care Setting, Bronwyn Schmidt

Nursing | Senior Theses

The objective of this research proposal is to identify short-term and long-term health consequences due to sleep disturbances in patients admitted to intensive care units. When reviewing published literature regarding sleep loss in the intensive care unit (ICU), it was discovered that adult patients admitted to a variety of ICU settings both in the United States and abroad reported disruptions in sleep to be a common complaint and barrier to their recovery. This is due to noises made by bedside alarms such as IV pumps, lights in the unit, and interruptions made by medical staff members to provide time-sensitive care. …

Acetone Ingestion Mimics A Fasting State To Improve Glucose Tolerance In A Mouse Model Of Gestational Hyperglycemia, Sandra Szlapinski, Brenda Strutt, Madeline Deane, Edith Arany, Jamie Bennett, David J. Hill

Paediatrics Publications

Gestational diabetes mellitus results, in part, from a sub‐optimal β‐cell mass (BCM) during pregnancy. Artemisinins were reported to increase BCM in models of diabetes by α‐ to β‐cell conversion leading to enhanced glucose tolerance. We used a mouse model of gestational glucose intolerance to compare the effects of an artemisinin (artesunate) on glycemia of pregnant mice with vehicle treatment (acetone) or no treatment. Animals were treated daily from gestational days (GD) 0.5 to 6.5. An intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test was performed prior to euthanasia at GD18.5 or post‐partum. Glucose tolerance was significantly improved in both pregnant and non‐pregnant mice with …

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), clinically defined as Crohn’s disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), or IBD-unclassified, results in chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract in genetically susceptible hosts. Pediatric onset IBD represents ≥ 25% of all IBD diagnoses and often presents with intestinal stricturing, perianal disease, and failed response to conventional treatments. NOD2 was the first and is the most replicated locus associated with adult IBD, to date. However, its role in pediatric onset IBD is not well understood. We performed whole-exome sequencing on a cohort of 1,183 patients with pediatric onset IBD (ages 0–18.5 years). We identified 92 probands with …
