(R1491) Numerical Solution Of The Time-Space Fractional Diffusion Equation With Caputo Derivative In Time By A-Polynomial Method, Saeid Abbasbandy, Jalal Hajishafieiha Dec 2021

(R1491) Numerical Solution Of The Time-Space Fractional Diffusion Equation With Caputo Derivative In Time By A-Polynomial Method, Saeid Abbasbandy, Jalal Hajishafieiha

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a novel type of polynomial is defined which is equipped with an auxiliary parameter a. These polynomials are a combination of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. The approximate solution of each equation is assumed as the sum of these polynomials and then, with the help of the collocation points, the unknown coefficients of each polynomial, as well as auxiliary parameter, is obtained optimally. Now, by placing the optimal value of a in polynomials, the polynomials are obtained without auxiliary parameter, which is the restarted step of the present method. The time discretization is performed …

Intrusion Detection In Internet Of Things Using Supervised Machine Learning Based On Application And Transport Layer Features Using Unsw-Nb15 Data-Set, Muhammad Ahmad, Qaiser Riaz, Muhammad Zeeshan, Hasan Tahir, Syed Ali Haider, Muhammad Safeer Khan

Faculty Publications - Electrical Engineering

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are well-connected; they generate and consume data which involves transmission of data back and forth among various devices. Ensuring security of the data is a critical challenge as far as IoT is concerned. Since IoT devices are inherently low-power and do not require a lot of compute power, a Network Intrusion Detection System is typically employed to detect and remove malicious packets from entering the network. In the same context, we propose feature clusters in terms of Flow, Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) by using features in UNSW-NB15 data-set. We …

Oscillation Of Nonlinear Third-Order Difference Equations With Mixed Neutral Terms, Jehad Alzabut, Martin Bohner, Said R. Grace Dec 2021

Oscillation Of Nonlinear Third-Order Difference Equations With Mixed Neutral Terms, Jehad Alzabut, Martin Bohner, Said R. Grace

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, new oscillation results for nonlinear third-order difference equations with mixed neutral terms are established. Unlike previously used techniques, which often were based on Riccati transformation and involve limsup or liminf conditions for the oscillation, the main results are obtained by means of a new approach, which is based on a comparison technique. Our new results extend, simplify, and improve existing results in the literature. Two examples with specific values of parameters are offered.

Fourth Derivative Singularly P-Stable Method For The Numerical Solution Of The Schrödinger Equation, Ali Shokri, Higinio Ramos, Mohammad Mehdizadeh Khalsaraei, Fikret A. Aliev, Martin Bohner

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we construct a method with eight steps that belongs to the family of Obrechkoff methods. Due to the explicit nature of the new method, not only does it not require another method as predictor, but it can also be considered as a suitable predictive technique to be used with implicit methods. Periodicity and error terms are studied when applied to solve the radial Schrödinger equation, considering different energy levels. We show its advantages in terms of accuracy, consistency, and convergence in comparison with other methods of the same order appearing in the literature.

The Us-China Trade War And Global Reallocations, Pablo Fajgelbaum, Pinelopi Goldberg, Patrick Kennedy, Amit Khandelwal, Daria Taglioni Dec 2021

The Us-China Trade War And Global Reallocations, Pablo Fajgelbaum, Pinelopi Goldberg, Patrick Kennedy, Amit Khandelwal, Daria Taglioni

Discussion Papers

We study global trade responses to the US-China trade war. We estimate the tariff impacts on product-level exports to the US, China, and rest of world. On average, countries decreased exports to China and increased exports to the US and rest of world. Most countries export products that complement the US and substitute China, and a subset operate along downward-sloping supplies. Heterogeneity in responses, rather than specialization, drives export variation across countries. Surprisingly, global trade increased in the products targeted by tariffs. Thus, despite ending the trend towards tariff reductions, the trade war did not halt global trade growth.

Aggregate Implications Of Barriers To Female Entrepreneurship, Gaurav Chiplunkar, Pinelopi K. Goldberg Dec 2021

Aggregate Implications Of Barriers To Female Entrepreneurship, Gaurav Chiplunkar, Pinelopi K. Goldberg

Discussion Papers

We develop a framework for quantifying barriers to labor force participation (LFP) and entrepreneurship faced by women in developing countries, and apply it to the Indian economy. We find that women face substantial barriers to LFP. The costs for expanding businesses through the hiring of workers are also substantially higher for women entrepreneurs. However, there is one area in which female entrepreneurs have an advantage: the hiring of female workers. We show that this is not driven by the sectoral composition of female employment. Consistent with this pattern, we find even without promoting female LFP, policies that boost female entrepreneurship …

Graduate Student Employee Unionization In The Second Gilded Age, William A. Herbert, Joseph Van Der Naald Dec 2021

Graduate Student Employee Unionization In The Second Gilded Age, William A. Herbert, Joseph Van Der Naald

Publications and Research

In debates on the future of work, a common theme has been how work became less secure through the denial of employee status. Though much of the attention has focused on other industries, precarity has also affected those working in higher education, including graduate student employees, contributing to what is now called the “gig academy.” While universities have reassigned teaching and research to graduate assistants, they have also refused to recognize them as employees. Nevertheless, unionization has grown considerably since 2012, most significantly at private institutions. Utilizing a unique dataset, this chapter demonstrates that between 2012 and 2019, graduate student …

Structural Power In Sustainability Transitions: Case Studies Of Energy Storage Integration Into Regional Transmission Organization Decision Processes, Stephanie Lenhart, Dalten Fox Dec 2021

Structural Power In Sustainability Transitions: Case Studies Of Energy Storage Integration Into Regional Transmission Organization Decision Processes, Stephanie Lenhart, Dalten Fox

CAES Energy Policy Institute Faculty Publications and Presentations

Highly technical rules for regional electricity markets shape opportunities for new technologies and the pace of transition to a cleaner and more distributed power system. We compare three case studies of regional transmission organizations and identify common mechanisms that describe the relationship between institutional design and administrative policy decisions. We compare industry actors, old and new, across these case studies to better understand structural power and institutional stability through four mechanisms drawn from the literature: (1) self-reinforcing interests, (2) participation in and position of groups, (3) influence over communication and information, and (4) control over problem framing and pace of …

Lee Kong Chian School Of Business Year In Review 2020-2021, Singapore Management University

SMU Corporate Reports

The last 12 months have been a roller coaster for Singapore and the world. Vaccines initially offered what seemed to be a clear way out of the Covid-19 pandemic but the more transmissible Delta variant has complicated matters considerably. However, despite the many challenges that the school has faced, I am happy to report that we have had a very good year overall. First of all, after a thorough and grueling process, the school received its EQUIS re-accreditation that will be valid for five years. The school has also received re-accreditation from AACSB International this year as well. The re-accreditation …

The Future Of Taiwan, Gillian Hodge Dec 2021

The Future Of Taiwan, Gillian Hodge

Senior Honors Projects

In American media, Taiwan has been referred to as the potential flashpoint for the next world war. Much quantitative research has been done regarding political views and predictions for Taiwan’s future. Based on previous studies, this essay seeks to build more knowledge on public perceptions of the Taiwan independence conflict among individuals on either side of the Taiwan Strait through interview-based research methods. To do this, I interviewed five individuals born in mainland China and five individuals born in Taiwan to compare how they view issues surrounding the China- Taiwan relationship and Taiwan's political status. My central research question looks …

Workplace Dispute Resolution In Ireland At A Crossroads: Challenges And Opportunities, Brian M. Barry Dr Dec 2021

Workplace Dispute Resolution In Ireland At A Crossroads: Challenges And Opportunities, Brian M. Barry Dr

Articles

The Workplace Relations Act 2015 fundamentally reformed the workplace dispute resolution system in Ireland–the centrepiece being the Workplace Relations Commission, the new body for first-instance dispute resolution. While the overall system is an improvement on its overly-complex and confusing predecessor, the Supreme Court’s decision in Zalewski v An Adjudication Officer declaring aspects of adjudication at the WRC unconstitutional, coupled with user representatives’ persistent concerns about how adjudication is conducted, present ongoing challenges.

This article describes the results of a survey undertaken in 2019 by the author of over one hundred representatives’ views on the system, and contextualises them in light …

Maleic And L-Tartaric Acids As New Anti-Sprouting Agents For Potatoes During Storage In Comparison To Other Efficient Sprout Suppressants, Ekta Bhattacharya, Suparna Mandal Biswas, Panchanan Pramanik Dec 2021

Maleic And L-Tartaric Acids As New Anti-Sprouting Agents For Potatoes During Storage In Comparison To Other Efficient Sprout Suppressants, Ekta Bhattacharya, Suparna Mandal Biswas, Panchanan Pramanik

ISI Best Publications

Inhibiting sprouting of potatoes is an interesting subject needed for potato storage and industry. Sprouting degrades the quality of tuber along with releasing α-solanine and α-chaconine, which are harmful for health. Sprout suppressants, available in the market, are either costly or toxic to both health and environment. So, there is a need for developing countries to explore new sprouting suppressant compound which is cheap, non-toxic and reasonably efficient in comparison to commercial ones. We have established that simple maleic acid and l-tartaric acid are effective sprout suppressing agents. Both can hinder sprouting up to 6 weeks and 4 weeks post …

C∗-Extreme Points Of Positive Operator Valued Measures And Unital Completely Positive Maps, Tathagata Banerjee, B. V.Rajarama Bhat, Manish Kumar Dec 2021

C∗-Extreme Points Of Positive Operator Valued Measures And Unital Completely Positive Maps, Tathagata Banerjee, B. V.Rajarama Bhat, Manish Kumar

ISI Best Publications

We study the quantum (C∗) convexity structure of normalized positive operator valued measures (POVMs) on measurable spaces. In particular, it is seen that unlike extreme points under classical convexity, C∗-extreme points of normalized POVMs on countable spaces (in particular for finite sets) are always spectral measures (normalized projection valued measures). More generally it is shown that atomic C∗-extreme points are spectral. A Krein–Milman type theorem for POVMs has also been proved. As an application it is shown that a map on any commutative unital C∗-algebra with countable spectrum (in particular Cn) is C∗-extreme in the set of unital completely positive …

Splicing, a key step in the eukaryotic gene-expression pathway, converts precursor messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) into mRNA by excising introns and ligating exons. This task is accomplished by the spliceosome, a macromolecular machine that must undergo sequential conformational changes to establish its active site. Each of these major changes requires a dedicated DExD/H-box ATPase, but how these enzymes are activated remain obscure. Here we show that Prp28, a yeast DEAD-box ATPase, transiently interacts with the conserved 5' splice-site (5'SS) GU dinucleotide and makes splicing-dependent contacts with the U1 snRNP protein U1C, and U4/U6.U5 tri-snRNP proteins, Prp8, Brr2, and Snu114. We further …

The abstract, authorless fabrication of an AI image juxtaposed with the legible photography of the constructed recognition perspective connects the awe-inspiring concept of the “natural” disaster with the tangible reality of its actual and potential destruction, found at culturally known physicalities. It is part of architecture’s responsibility to utilize its agency in demystifying the climate crisis, utilizing potent imagery to manifest the danger and effects of these disasters in a contributing effort to protect America’s cultural icons. Representation therefore holds power in communicating immediacy and emotional investment to the climate crisis. The cultural l legibility of national parks is well …
